A poor man's version of Red Storm Rising (Tom Clancy). Sorry for the comparisons to Clancy, but a novel set up like this is asking to be compared to Red Storm Rising.

If Red Storm Rising was an "A" level and written for adults, then Battlefield Ukraine would be a "C" level and seems to be written for 9th or 10th graders.

A writing technique that I disliked and it is used throughout this book is when the authors express the characters thoughts as in "What in the world is going on? I cannot believe the President would do this". They do this over and over. That is how the books progresses. The writing seems very simplistic to me.

Not sure if the authors are American or Russian or what. They sure portray American and NATO troops as pretty naïve and incompetent. They have the Americans ill prepared for a war and falling for every trick in the book. I spent 21 years in the Coast Guard and Army, and never saw troops this ill prepared for battle.

And no real ending...I guess a plot device to set up book 2 in this series. Not sure I want to go on. From the authors point of view: America is weak, America has no back bone, and can't fight worth beans. Maybe this will be a big seller over in Russia.

I usually just rate on Goodreads and do my reviews(when I feel the need for them) on Amazon, where I have kindle unlimited and do most of my buying. In this case I'll make an exception. It's Terrible. Waste of money. I want mine back. Wooden, robotic characters who talk (and even think) like they are reading from a script produced by 5th graders. No real story line. More of an account by people whose politics make them write about how they wish this conflict would go.Wrong on equipment, unbelievable on strategy and tactics. To add insult to injury the Americans are portrayed as vicious, arrogant and militarily inept, while the Russians are portrayed as reasonable, victimized, freedom fighters with much smarter leadership and better soldiers. To add to the weakness, the battle scenes are poorly written, scarcely believable, short and glossed over. My worst purchase in a long time, and I read a lot.

Excellent premise. Politically motivated BS spoils it all.

I really wanted to give ir a try. I mean ok - the author thinks geopolitics is boooring. I can live with that, I said to myself... But boy oh boy - did thia turn into a trumptasy... I mean there's just so many things wrong with this book that I shouldn't waste my time reviwing it. I'll do it though to spare others from wasting hard earned cash. A Big Mac will give you more satisfaction, even if you're a veggie.

- political hack. Tr.. Sorry, Erm... Gates. Yes, the president of US. He's what a trump fanboy would dream of Trump being. It's so ridiculous that it's acrually funny.

- NO chatacter development. I mean it. NONE. Not even Put... Sorry, Petrov or Tr.. Sorry avain, Gates.

- The authors believes that geopolitics means hammering in the idea that Russia was encroached by NATO (and that NATO broke the agreement made by allowing es Warsow Paxt countries). This is literally it. You'll be reminded of this every other chapter. Heck, Gates, being super Tr.. Sorry. Super Gates, is reminded at least twice. I guess it's only fair, since he is inadvertently potraied as a lobotomized cartoon monkey.

- I am no expert in mil tech or strategy or tactics or whatever. But I recommend the author a super mega cool invention. Google. Really, please do some research instead of throwing epithets around to cover for a serious lack of research.

- The Russians are all god and dandy. Oh.. And they fuckin' drink vodka ALL THE time. Really? WTF!!! I have no love for Russia or Russians, but having Generals sipping vodka all the time while planning a fuckin' World War is insulting.

- Fanboy Trump (yeah... I quit calling the fictional US president Gates as the author doesn't even try to hide the parallels...) is like sooo much of a vixtim. Blame the media. Conspiracy. Leakers. Intelligence apparatus wants him to fail. Blame Obama (not joking. The author really pulls this shit). Whatever you can think of - it's here. Fox News style.

- Whoopy doo. Boom. Crrack. More booom. Fuck, why use words to describe an explosions when you can have like SPECIAL EFFECTS!

- Did you know that the Su (whatever... 35 i think) has better armor than the A10? No? Well, this is tour lucky day. You will read this. Again. And again. And again. Like many other stuff, relevant or not, it's not enough to read it once and maybe hinted at it one more time. No... You NEED TO GET IT!

- Stephen Bannon & Co "trump" DIA/CIA/NSA specialists. 'Nuff said.

- Please... Use your cash to wipe your ass with it and then chew the bills. Or coins, whatever you fancy. You'll get more out of it than this pollitically biased crap.

Okay story, but laughable when it comes to illustrating a Trump like president

As the title says the story overall not bad- it won't get your heart racing or anything like that. Biggest complaint so far is the very realistic parallels it draws from the 2016 election. I would say this is the most flattering allusion to Trump I have ever seen. Far from the decisive, level headed, and strategic thinker they allude Trump to be. The book would have been more enjoyable if they just went with a fictional president that wasn't so clearly based on an illusion of what the authors believe Trump to be. In all fairness this is a fictional book so if your going to allude to Trump being a decisive, level headed, and strategic minded president the authors picked the right category.

Red storm indeed

What a pace this runs at, drags you into the action immediately. I must say as good as the original red storm rising . See if this continues with the rest of the series.

Ripped from headlines

Enjoyed this book. Reminds me of red storm rising. High praise indeed. Well written, very good pace. Very logical escalation of hostilities. Pretty much a take on today's geopolitics.

A 10 hour 30 minute unabridged audiobook.

Considering current events (two weeks into the 2022 Russian of Ukraine) its evident the author gave the Russians a lot more credit than they're due when it comes to their military readiness and capabilities. They can't seem to figure out basic logistics or combined air support. This ranged between an "I liked it" and an "It was okay". But ultimately the aforementioned overestimation of Russian capabilities brought it down it to an "okay".

I noticed in several of reviews the comparison to Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Rising. I haven’t read that particular book so can’t make the same comparison, but I found this book excellent. I very nearly gave it 5 stars. Great premise, a wonderful introduction to what I hope will be a fantastic series. I’ve been wanting to read an intricate and detailed series like this since Andrew Watt’s War Planners. What stopped me from giving it 5 stars? Nit-picking really. A Forsyth style “cast of characters” at the beginning of the book would have been helpful since there are many characters. Knowing the glossary of terms was included at the end of the book before I started reading would have saved me googling acronyms repeatedly too, but that made me chuckle so no harm no foul. Biggest of all is that I’m really hopeful that the books will continue to get better, so 5 stars now gives the series no where to go.

Edit: I have now read the entire series and I'm delighted to say that it was indeed a fantastic series. Overall the books and story continued to grow and get better, so for that reason I'm upgrading to 5 stars.

Not well written

Not sure why some are commenting so positively about this new series. While the basic concepts are good, the writing reads like someone walking through a PowerPoint presentation. The authors seem to prefer multiple sentences where one well crafted one would be more informative and interesting.

There are many other well written, fast-paced books that have been published in the past few years that show how amateurish this series is. If you want well written, plausible, good books on the basic premise, pick up the books by Sharra, Larry Bond, Martin Archer, Andy Farman and others - even Clancy (his own).

Not so great. The book is crowded with two dimensional people, there's too much jumping around, with new people all the time. Certainly this is a large scale war, but the reader doesn't have time to get friendly with the protagonists and one just doesn't connect to anyone and rally for them.
Here one can see clearly one of the reasons why Red Storm Rising by Clancy is such a hit.
Well, I finished it, that's something. Not going to get the second part.

Just finished the first book and it is amazing!! It has just about everything I like in World War III fiction: fighting in both Europe and North America, Russia and China as the enemy, no MAD. I was actually surprised and got hooked on the book pretty quickly. I can't wait to read Battlefield Korea. This series is really rivalling the Winds of War series. The only thing I didn't like was that the book had an ensemble cast. It was a little hard to remember all the characters. But overall great!

Second read

Your novel is excellent, only suggestion NEVER call a Marine a "SOLDIER", nothing personal server with both. To the lay person it's no big deal, to a Marine it's a SIN.

Good fast read. Not as good as clancy' s red storm rising. But good on its own.

Bought part two to read next. Hopefully it will be better then part one. Good handle on weapon systems generally but not tanks.

Since this book was part of the “Red Storm” series, I was interested to see how it would compare to 'Red Storm Rising' by Tom Clancy. I was hoping it would be a more modern take on Clancy’s book.
That hope was sorely disappointed. Throughout the book, the NATO nations, especially the US, are portrayed as incompetent, riddled with spies, and antiquated (in tactics and equipment), just to name a few of their many negative qualities; only the dove politicians are portrayed as intelligent and honest. The pro-EU government in Ukraine is constantly referred to as “fascist” without any definition of the term and is portrayed as weak, ineffective, and brutal. Russia is painted as a victim of NATO aggression, with tacit moral justification for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The authors attempted a sort of “ripped from the headlines” feel to it, but that ended up coming off more as cheap storytelling than any sort of true “This might happen.” For example, the Russian president “Petrov” was said to have traded off power with his close friend, clearly a direct reference to Putin and Medvedev in real-life Russia. However, then the authors also reversed real-life events, having the pro-EU government fire on unarmed protestors rather than the pro-Russian government doing this. One of the few things that the book actually gets right in its comparison to a real world scenario is that the US forces in the book had adapted to fight insurgents instead of standing armies, which left them less prepared to fight enemy tanks and aircraft.
Overall, (as another reviewer stated) this book feels like it was written by a Russian and will probably be popular there. I don’t know if it was to create tension, but the level of stupidity, arrogance, and incompetence displayed by the US and NATO reached the level of ludicrous. I would dare to say that my 12th grade American Government students could have run the country and military better than the fictional idiots that populate this book. I assume that since the last book in the series is called 'Battlefield Russia' that the US and NATO eventually are able to turn the tide and win, but I have no desire to slog through another book in this series.
I wanted to give this a 1-star rating, but some of the things mentioned (like a “missile swarm” to overwhelm defenses) gave me food for thought, which bumped my rating up to a 2-star. But I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Battlefield Ukraine. James Rosone

The introduction to this book brings to the surface a very interesting point. It didn't really matter who won the recent presidential election. Whoever the victor was they would be crucified relentlessly by there detractors. The new president, POTUS is a political novice. Good intentions. Who can he trust? Leaks in every facet of security in our government need to be eliminated. Russia is posturing in the Ukraine. Will POTUS back down? Russia gives an Ultimatum for us to withdraw our military. They don't honor the time period and strike prematurely and convincingly. Our military and NATO forces are losing badly. Our current strategy is in disarray. This is a very believable and what if scenario. All of the political players in this book have very strong resemblances to current leaders An excellent and thought provoking read . I highly recommend.

Wow! Well researched and well written. It's got that ripped-from-the-headlines sort of feel to it. I also love that it's not full of profanity. It is lacking in character development; there are many many characters from heads of state to ambassadors down to army privates. Nearly all are given names and many have a bit of backstory, but there is not really a central character that the reader can latch onto and follow through the whole plot. This would have been 5 stars for me if there were clear main characters and supporting players but it feels to me like the countries themselves are the main characters and that leaves the book a little lacking in emotional engagement and I don't feel quite as invested as I otherwise might. Still a great read though and I will continue the series.

First of six(?) that approach the military issues that the US and NATO are facing around the globe. Saw some critics panning the quality of writing (not up to John Clancy!! - gimme a break) but this couple of authors are relatively new at this. Others questioned the quality of the military strategies - forgetting that all military plans go out the window when the attack starts.
I think much of the criticism was unwarranted and short-sighted and plan to read book 2. As for this one, published 4 years ago, we now see Russian armies actually surrounding eastern Ukraine today in a similar scenario that this book foresaw. Is Russia going to attack?
No two guesses at military strategies and weapons technology and capability are ever going to be the same. Solid 3.

I came across this author through a post in the Military Thriller Book Group and the book looked interesting so I picked up a copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The first words out of my mouth when I finished this book was "Wow, this could have easily been taken directly from the headlines !!"

This novel would definitely be enjoyed by any action junkies, espionage and thrill seekers.

As far as reviews go, I really enjoyed the realism of this novel and would easily give this five stars.

As with all of the books that I ramble on about, this is just my five cents worth.

Disappointing

Dogmatic use of a President “Trump” like figure (which the author admits is Trump essentially) to save everyone from the hundreds of “incompetent” professionals in the military and intelligence leadership. Propaganda in the form of narrative historical fiction. Hard to stomach.

Interesting idea

I think this book has made a premise that America is weaken, however as a political junky I don’t see that is true with the US military in reality. I know recently the T-14 tank and the Russia stealth fighter have been scrapped not because of failed technology but for the cost of these items. They are both currently on hold.

Very apposite

Whilst understanding this is a book of fiction, given the events of the last two months this book should be required reading. The insight, explanations and global recognition suggests the authors have more than a vibrant imagination. Really enjoyed reading this book, thank you.

Very relevant for today, this could happen very soon. War is only a blink away, with all the talk of Russian interference in our elections I could see where this might happen.
