Breathtaking short stories told and retold through the generations.Have you ever heard about the tragedy of Culiacan's pirate?
Like many of the tales in this book, it is not a story usually told outside of Mexico.
My name is Raúl Jiménez, and I am a Mexican author who has always been fascinated by my country's legends and folklore, as it is a rich part of our heritage that most mainstream audiences haven't experienced.
From prehispanic stories like the Mexican version of the Prometheus myth to more modern legends and fables, you will find something for you in the many stories of this book, and I hope you have as much fun reading them as I had when I put them together.

This is a fun, informative book. I have lived in several countries and this is the type of information that I like to get, but is difficult to find. This book spans hundreds of years and contains the bones of Mexican culture. I really enjoyed it and hope the author will collect and write more. My favorite was the opossum stealing fire, just because of my personal work with animal totems. Despite having worked a great deal with opossum spirit energy I was completely unaware of this story. This is the kind of stuff that makes this book a valuable read. All though common knowledge to many aware of Mexican culture, it is just not something you are likely to read about in a book on Mexico. Well done!
There are some interesting stories and nice illustrations here. The stories themselves are rather brief, and many of them come across as filler amongst the few gems in the lot. I would have preferred the filler removed and have those gems expanded upon. Notwithstanding, I think the time reading the book was well spent. I have read other books on Mexico and Spanish by Raul Jimenez and hope that he continues publishing new ones.
Such a rich culture with some of the most amazing lore. These stories help bind a culture in their beauty and authenticity. I have visited Mexico twice in my life and remember hearing then seeing so many of the landmarks these tales were based off. Fantastic book.
Interesting and eclectic collection of Mexican myths and urban legends
Fascinating to learn more of Mexico’s culture and legends. Some of the tales were awkwardly phrased and/or introduced. An edit by an English-speaking native would make this a more enjoyable read.
If you’re interested in learning a little more about Mexico and the myths and things they believed, you should check this book out! Have you ever wondered what kind of urban legends this country’s people thought were true? Then this is the book for you!
I'm a huuuuuge fan of myths and legends. I like to tie my own writing into them. Learning native myths are rewarding because they are rarely publicized at the same level as Greek and Roman myths. Thanks for sharing!
I loved this book. The culture of Mexico is so rich with myths and legends, and it was a treat to learn new information. The illustrations were top notch.
I loved learning about these stories and legends I didn’t previously know about. The story of our lady of Guadalupe is one of my favorite stories and just about the only one I was familiar with and I was so excited to read it here
This was a great short book. My favorite 3 short stories in this book are The Love Tree, The Kissing Alley and 5 stars to The Nurse with the Ironed Out Uniform ! For frequent travelers to Mexico, this is a much read for those who love myths.
I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. Some of the stories are based on true facts, others myth. Some are inspirational, some are tragic. A few are pretty creepy (!!) but interesting. Great for storytelling around a campfire! I also learned about some famous places in Mexico and want to visit them someday.
I enjoyed the illustrations in this book, which were well-done and pertinent to the story. It seems that the prose has been edited as I did not find typos and grammar mistakes. Highly recommended!
