You’ve been through Hell and back. You’ve been to where only the darkest of villains have found pleasure in their actions. You’ve survived everything he’s done to you, but now it’s time for you to find yourself again, and I’ll be here every step of the way.
Sometime in between when I saw you in that cage and when your arms found solace around me, I claimed you as mine and I’ll protect you from everything—even yourself. Together, we’ll burn the scum alive and play in the ashes from the flames.
I write to you so you’re aware whenever you choose to unlock the door and come out of hiding, I’ll be right here. But if you think you’ll be leaving the room only to run from me, you’re severely wrong. You’ve burned yourself into my soul and now it’s time for us to blaze together.
Burningly yours, Hawke
Burning Notes is the fourth and final book in the Captive Writings series, which must be read in order. Burning Notes is a dark romance with content some readers may find triggering. Trigger warnings include rape, anal sex, non-consensual sexual encounters, explicit sexual content, trauma, PTSD, abuse, blood play, slavery, reference to murder, swearing, physical violence, and death.
USA Today Bestselling author M.L. Philpitt writes both dark romance and paranormal romance. When she’s not writing made-up realities, she’s reading them. She lives in Canada with her four pets and survives life with coffee and an obsession with fictional characters, especially the morally grey kind. By day, she masks as a therapist, and is still waiting for her Hogwarts letter so she can be sorted into her Ravenclaw house.
Talk about what a way to finish this series!... Talk about an emotional rollercoaster!... Talk about just wow!!!...
The fourth and final book in The Captive Writings Series - which must be read in order! So if you haven't read the previous three, just stop. Stop and go back - you won't regret it!
This is Hawkes story, the mysterious, dark, deep, smart lawyer and the perfect of example never to judge a book by its cover - facial piercings, scruffy hair, a lazy/laid-back attitude - until you get him in a courtroom!!
Man, Hawke in a suit 🤤 but Hawke in his real skin 🥵!!!
He's been the backbone in tracking down Alex, it all started with him tracking down Ryker and I have to say, anything ever happens to me - I want Hawke in my corner!!! We also get his background - be prepared to want to cry, scream, rage because it's horrible!
Then we have Willow, poor, starved, tortured and broken Willow... Who is freaking awesome! That girl is so strong and the connection between her and Hawke? I believed it! They're perfect together 🥰
It's an excellent read, emotional, s3xy, passionate, heartbreaking and addictive - I loved it!!!!
*I voluntarily received an arc and this is my honest review. 4.5
The Captive Writings book four, Burning Notes, tells Hawke and Willow’s story and the conclusion to this fantastic dark romance series. I have enjoyed reading each book; all so different yet centered around a common theme.
Hawke is a character who we didn’t get to know a lot about in the three previous books and there’s always been an element of mystery surrounding his past. Let’s just say—he deserved his privacy. 😢 Willow is such a strong young woman, she doesn’t see herself as such but victims often don’t. I am amazed by her resilience after everything she suffered; the trauma we learned about in book three and now in this book. ‘Liking’ both characters isn’t saying enough, they are both amazing characters who complement each other superbly.
With the flashbacks from Willow, as well as Hawke, we get all of the answers to every question and closure too. Having both lead characters tell the story from their points of view gives us so much more detail and hand-in-hand with that are the emotions. I can honestly say I was amazed by the balance of emotions in this story, a very clever feat.
I have to say when this author creates an evil character she certainly knows what she’s doing, in each book Alex Miller was gradually described more and more until a complete picture was evident, and holy moly was that picture in 3D! A new character of immense interest was also added in this book and I am already chomping at the bit to read his story—that’s the power of this author’s writing.
What a fantastic way to round out this page turning series. By the time you get to the last page all your burning questions will be answered so what more can you ask for? I will say though that the steam very nearly became overpowering when trying to get those elusive answers before we ran out of pages, so I found myself skimming a bit. Don't get me wrong, I get the why for some of it, but after loving the previous book so much, it was slightly frustrating. That's just me though and is a result of loving the storyline so much that I couldn't get enough. In saying all of this, I had to rate the way I have because Hawke became my new favourite character. I knew he must have an epic story, but that blew my mind and heart. I never saw that coming. Shutting up now as the completion of this Captivate Writings journey needs to be experienced first hand. Looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.
This is the last book in the series and I’ve been waiting for Hawke’s book since he was first introduced. It’s interesting to get things from his perspective and see the two sides of him come together to protect his family.

It’s funny that the series is named Captive Writings, because I swear every time I pick up one of them…I’m completely and utterly captivated. There’s no stone left unturned, nothing left to wonder, everything is completely perfect. The series completion breaks my heart, but I know our brilliant author will have something equally captivating for us next 😉.
Willow and Hawke are everything I’d hoped they’d be. Normally I don’t love the instant connection trope, but their slow introduction made it so much better. His patience and understanding through her healing process was everything she needed, and so was the environment he created for her. His past is haunting, and for that exact reason he was the perfect man for the job. Willow is SO STRONG. I am so amazed at her bravery and strength while in captivity, and even more so out of it. She did what most couldn’t do in a very short amount of time, and helped Teagan in the process just by showing that it was possible. I loved that Natalie and Elana were so supportive and immediately accepted her into the group, it’s just what Willow needed. Let me just say, the breath of fresh air that came after the wedding….freaking FINALLY!!
Ooft. Burning Notes is absolutely not for everyone. Please check the trigger warnings listed in the summary and do not take them lightly. This may be the darkest book I have ever read. It's f*cked up, and it is explicit.
This book tells the story of Willlow and Hawke who both have substantial trauma which they work through together.
There was an element of insta love which I normally despise, but honestly, I don't think this one could have been done any other way. After what she went through Willow needed someone who gave her all the love and protection.
Hawke is hot. Tall, dark hair, facial & 🍆 piercings 👀, not afraid to get his hands dirty, a dom 🥵🥵🥵
Willow is hearbreaking and SO strong.
Fast paced, loads of spice, DARK.
Thank you to the Author, Publisher and Netgalley for the ARC 🥰
Wow. What I way to emotionally drain me to end this series. It was so worth it for sure but it was definitely the hardest book it read as the topics and what the main character went through. For sure look up trigger warnings BEFORE reading this series but even this book It really goes into depth of experiences and trying to heal and move forward. I love this tender relationship between these two. Hawk was so patient and was able to do so much by so little and it was amazing to watch/read. This story wasn't so much a continuation on the overall plot line as that mostly finished by the end of book 3 but this book if you can handle the triggers is so worth the read. I sobbed so many times I had to stop reading because It was just a blur with tears. Love what the author does with there characters and overall story
I've followed this series since Ruthless Letters (book 1) came out and to say I'm obsessed doesn't come close to describing how much I love it 🖤
This is the final book and wraps the series nicely, but wow! It's an definitely an emotional rollercoaster!
Hawke has been instrumental in taking down Alex Miller, although he's been mostly in the background for the other 3 books so he's been a bit of a mystery. This makes sense now we get to see his past, which I was not prepared for at all.
Then there's the beautiful, tortured Willow. In Vicious Texts we're introduced to Willow and, with this book, there is some overlap in the timeline to understand how she ended up in the situation with Alex.
I love how this author creates an undeniably evil character. Alex starts of as a 'bad' man but over the course of the series we are gradually shown how despicable he truly is.
I'm quite sad to say goodbye to these characters.
I'm definitely excited to see where the next series leads especially as we've now been introduced to someone that I NEED more from ❤️
This book was sooooo goooood! I love Hawke so much! His and Willow’s relationship is so fierce, and it made my heart melt. I loved how the author showed the grit of trauma, and how real the fear of repeating history is. Hawke broke my heart with his story 💔
Everyone needs to read this book, but first, two things: 1) Make sure to read the first three books, starting with Ruthless Letters (Free for a limited time), and CHECK TRIGGERS!!!!
This is the 4th book in this incredible series as well as being the last, and Hawke and Willow’s journey is the perfect conclusion. Hawke is mysterious, dark, and a smart lawyer, while Willow is broken, haunted, tortured, and starving. Hawke has his own haunting past, but he is so patient and understanding with Willow while she heals. This is a well written story which is dark, raw, gritty, and intense, emotional roller coaster, with intrigue, trauma, heartbreak, passion, healing, friendships, supportive characters, and love, which leads to a heartwrenching addictive page turner. Be aware there may be triggers for some readers due to the sensitive content!! I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Having read Ruthless Letters, Obsessive Messages, and Vicious Texts i've been looking so forward to more of this series! Ever since i reached the end of book three, i've been wanting to read this book! I picked it up and got right back into the Captive Writings world! I so enjoyed this fourth installment!
Willow and Hawke's journey pulled me in! Going into their story, i didn't know what all to expect. I couldn't wait to see how everything would unfold!
I really liked getting to dig deeper with both Hawke and Willow and seeing how they'd tackle things. There was such realness to these two that got to me. I loved how their story kept me on my toes and had me feeling many things throughout! The chemistry between them was so good!
I was glad to jump back into the Captive Writings world!
With Burning Notes, Ms.Philpitt has created such a good and dark read and ending to this series that had me feeling so much! I can't wait for more from this author!
This is a dark series, be sure to read the author's warnings.
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from The Next Step PR / the author*
WOW! What an intense and extremely emotional conclusion to The Captive Writings series.
Right from the very start this story rips your heart out and has your emotions all over the place. I was riveted to my seat and gasping at all of shocking moments being revealed while tears were streaming down my face. My heart was torn over what Willow and Hawke were both put through.
Willow’s pain and anxiety poured off the pages and had me feeling it all. Her journey of healing, forgiveness, and finding love was such an intense emotional rollercoaster ride that with every step forward she took, she had me in tears of joy for her. But I don’t think I have any fingernails left from all of the anxiety she put me through with all of the steps back she takes throughout. I just wanted her to heal and live. Hawke and Willow have an undeniable connection and you just knew that they would be a perfect match and would help each other heal and find the happiness that they both deserve. I absolutely loved them together.
This story was so well written that I got completely caught up in it and couldn’t put it down. It had everything I needed, action, suspense, violence, drama, steam and an intense nail biter of an ending.
What an amazing ending for amazing series!!! Dammit! I am so grateful I stumbled upon series. I was supposed to read another series from this new-to-me author, but the author's note on the first book of that book brought me to Hawke and to get to Hawke's book, I need to read the other 3 books. I do not regret even a bit because damn this series is so good. I am kinda sad that nobody talks about this series. Burning Notes is the last book, and it wrapped up the story so beautifully. I loved Hawke so much. He brought me to this, and he was as perfect as I could imagine. I loved Willow even more. This girl was so strong that I couldn't muster enough words to describe how strong Willow was. This book focused on healing Willow and Hawke's pasts and traumas. To say that they healed each other perfectly was an understatement. They were everything more than healed each other. They were the couple match from Heaven. I admired how the author could write their story so beautifully. I cried so many times for both Hawke and Willow. I cheered so happily when their happy ending came. Not only for Hawke and Willow but also for Ryker, Elena, Tristan, Natalie, Brent, and Taegan. You, Alex, hope you are ever really only a fictional character and keep yourself in the deepest part of hell.
Hawks is the *ultimate* soft boy. I just wanted to make a copy of him and bring him to real life, because men like him have to exist in the world, right? Right??? Anyway, this story was SO good. I don’t know why I’m drawn to stories with trauma, but I am, especially when the guy helps the girl through her trauma. There’s just something so sweet and wholesome about it despite the dark content. And this story was done perfectly. From Willow’s captivity to recovery, the author perfectly captured a realistic depiction of what it’s like to heal from trauma and move on from the past. This is key because most romance book authors just skip past the healing part and go straight into the sex, which is annoying. And yeah, there was plenty of hot sex in this book, but it was done in a way that actually made sense for what Willow and Hawke went through. It was perfect. I admittedly read this book before any of the others in the series because the plot really appealed to me, but I’m sure I’ll go back and read the rest. I just wish the books were on Kindle Unlimited!!
Burning Notes is the final book in the Captive Writing series and took us on an emotional rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. This is Hawke's story and I've liked him since the start so was quite excited to know more about him. My heart almost broke reading his back story and knowing all he's been through but it all lead to him becoming the man he is today and that was the perfect person for Willow.
Willow was a strong woman and a survivor and I loved the connection she had to Hawke and how patient and understanding he was with her.
Told in dual POV, we are also given flashbacks of certain events that can be triggering so do check the content warning.
This story was dark, intense, traumatic and heart breaking yet it also was healing and passionate and very well written. It was a great ending to the series and I would recommend it to lovers of dark romance.
What a fantastic way to wrap up the ride that was this series. I have been fully on board since Book 1 and each subsequent story has adding a delicious layer to this cake only to be frosted and topped with the beautiful pairing that is Willow and Hawke
We are finally getting the justified end to our underlying story, but at its heart this book really focuses on the journey to recovery. The path to healing from trauma is not lined with rainbows and beautiful flowers, it is rough and it takes strength and power to push through to the other side.
Hawke is absolutely beautiful as a character. Having navigated his own stormy voyage of trauma to find calmer waters, he is the perfect companion to walk alongside Willow as she works to find her peace. He is gentle yet strong, fierce yet vulnerable and he absolutely stole my heart.
I am sad to leave these characters behind, but I’m excited to see where the spinoff series leads. Hopefully we’ll get some snippets of our captive characters' Happily Ever Afters.
This has been one of my favourite series of all time.
This is the 4th and last book in The Captive Writings series (you need to read these in order).
This is the story of Hawk, the dark, smart and mysterious lawyer.
The definition of do not judge a book by its cover. Piercings, scruffy hair, lazy nothing can get me attitude. But that changes once he is in a courtroom.
We learn about his past but we also see him tracking down Alex.
Next to Hawk there is Willow, she is starved, poor and tortured even broken girl.
Their connection is off the charts, let's just say it, they are perfect for each other.
This book is an amazing, emotionally, sexy and passionate story.
Be aware it will break your heart and you will love it.
Oh how much I loved this story. I couldn't wait for Hawk to get his hea. I just knew his and Willow's was going to hit me hard and yeh I called that one. This book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. Hawke is a character who we didn’t get to know a lot about in the other book's and there’s always been a mystery surrounding his past. Willow is such a strong young woman and a survivor from day one her and Hawke shared a connection. Willow and Hawke are everything I’d hoped they’d be. This story was dark, intense, traumatic and heart breaking yet it also was healing and passionate and such a good story.
Burning Notes is the fourth and final book in the Captive Writings Series, and this book went out with a bang. We finally get to read Hawke's story and I was so here for it. This dark, sexy, smart, laid back, mysterious lawyer isn't what you would expect in a lawyer. But in the courtroom he is a new person. He is completely brutal. He's also the reason Alex has been found. Then you have Willow. She's been held captive. She's starved, abused and broken when Hawke finds her as well. This book will have you experiencing all the emotions. I would highly recommend this series. It's absolutely fantastic and is sure to captivate any reader.
This was my favorite book in the series! I love how the MMC acted towards the FMC to help her after what she had gone through while falling in love with her!
