Why Ukraine Matters

Rate this book
The 24 February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine is part of a long Russian siege and occupation that began since the 2004 November Orange Revolution. These essays are based on Fazle Chowdhury’s analysis reflecting his chilling observances.

The threat of war had been looming since March 2021 as Russia began deploying troops along the Ukrainian border, including in Belarus, in the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria and occupied Crimea. Diplomacy looked to be the only instrument for peace, but met by a "Chamberlain-eques" reaction Europe's heavyweights; France, Germany and Italy, have taken the cautionary peacemaker role between Kremlin and Washington, while Kyiv’s sovereignty remains threatened and makes the other Baltic States nervous. The conflict is centered on NATO's eastward expansion, which Russia considers a betrayal of the West after the fall of the Soviet Union. Is it a Kremlin maneuver to weaken the European Union and NATO through Ukraine?

Fazle Chowdhury has been following Ukraine’s crisis since 2004. A critic of the European Union, NATO, and in his sequence of acerbic explanations have described the roots of Ukraine’s present circumstances inflicted from its inception. Why Ukraine Matters is an analysis surrounding the history and geopolitics of Ukraine that explains the present predicament.

Good One!

It's such a great book to know about Ukraine's history and Russia. I enjoyed reading this book, I have heard and seen the news about Russia's attack on Ukraine but never really know about the full history of these countries, this book will tell you about that for sure.

When I was reading this book, it reminds me of my school days, in 10th std, I used to read more history of all the countries here and there in the social subject, such a good one, that time, I had a hard time reading history and their periods and all.

I don't know there is so much matter behind Russia and Ukraine country relationship, after reading this book, I get to know about Ukraine's matters, how they have had a serious crisis since 2004, and their history such a connection between Russia and Ukraine, siege and all, the terrorist attack, how much this country had the growth in their economy levels and all.
If you guys like to read country history other than yours, like to gain good knowledge about the history of other countries then you must go for this book. The author wrote everything very simple yet understandable way.

As we near an almost-a-year-long war between Russia and Ukraine, this book is greatly recommended from my side to get to know the Ukrainian-Russo war that's happening at the moment.

Most of us think the conflict had only erupted in early January or maybe a year before, however roots could doo deeper with a constant ambivalence between Ukraine and Russia since 2004. The author brings us a detailed analysis of the crisis. Though not much of a fan of nonfiction, this one was worth the time and effort. A recommended read for readers across all ages (very young readers can ask help from adults for brief understanding).

Why Ukraine Matters is a non-fiction book that highlights why the plight of the people of Ukraine needs to take priority. Comprising of letters written by the author during their undergraduate thesis, this book is a perfect insight into the matters of Ukraine. While this book is monumentally different from other non-fiction books, I do find it a must-read to keep updated with the general affairs of the current society.

In "Why Ukraine Matters," Fazal Chowdhury provides a comprehensive analysis of Ukraine's history and geopolitics, shedding light on its present predicament. Chowdhury, who has been following Ukraine's crisis since 2004, offers critical insights into the roots of the country's current circumstances, which have been inflicted since its inception.

The book delves into the looming threat of war, which had been brewing since March 2021, as Russia deployed troops along the Ukrainian border, including in Belarus and occupied Crimea. Despite diplomatic efforts for peace, Europe's heavyweights, including France, Germany, and Italy, adopted a cautious peacemaker role between Kremlin and Washington, while Kyiv's sovereignty remained threatened, leaving other Baltic States nervous.

Author's analysis raises important questions about NATO's eastward expansion, which Russia perceives as a betrayal of the West after the fall of the Soviet Union. Written by Fazle Chowdhury, "Why Ukraine Matters" is an unrelenting and perceptive dissection of the complex and troubled Ukraine situation in which its independence is being challenged by the Russian actions. By studying the essence of geopolitics, Chowdhury, a real expert on the matter, dives into the intricacies of history, politics, and strategy that move the crisis in Eastern Europe.

Negotiators are one of the main characters in the story, either they play a part in avoiding a disaster or they don't. According to Chowdhury; France, Germany and Italy embody a "Chamberlain-ish" syndrome where they seem to put a premium on moderate peace preservation rather than confrontational economic seeking to assure Ukraine's territorial integrity. In the midst of this front, the specter of NATO's eastward enlargement forms as the main issue where Russia is looking at it as a breach of trust and a threat to its own interests.

The difference between "Why Ukraine Matters" and Chowdhury's other works stands on his in-depth knowledge and years-long personal involvement in Ukraine's conflict. He is particularly knowledgeable about this subject as he closely followed its evolution, starting in 2004. Being informed and passionate about the matter is something that impresses him. Consequently, the biting comments that he makes cut the essence of the problem which gives the readers an informed opinion basing on the discerning factors.

In sum, "Why Ukraine Matters" is a recent book that raises some of the most critical questions you could think of. Chowdhury's striking reflections urge us to take stock of the underlying pillars of power, diplomacy, and sovereignty that are on the brink of unravelling in a world fraught with instability. Although one might disagree with his conclusions, all cannot deny the importance of having a grasp of the complicated issues behind the crisis in Ukraine – a crisis that was described by Chowdhury with clarity and conviction.

The question of “Why Ukraine Matters” should be the question that everyone is asking. This work by Mr. Chowdhury is incredibly well researched and he obviously knows what his subject well.

I will say that this book is cumbersome. At 600 pages, there are a lot of details. Now that I’ve learned that it is a collection of individual works that the author put together, it makes more sense, I felt like it was constantly going back to topics that had already been discussed, therefore making this a disjointed read. I feel that while this topic is very relevant, and I encourage everyone to read up on the subject, this book might be a bit much for people who don’t have a background in politely science, international relations, or history of the region. I think the beginning chapters are very useful. They talk about the historical importance of Ukraine in Russian history. There are chapters on NATO and each countries perspective on the region, there are a lot of references to WWII and the collapse of the Soviet Union, and a LOT about the oligarchs and corruption in the former Soviet Republics.

I know this sounds strange for a 4 star review. I have an MA in International Relations so this type of work is very interesting to me. The amount of knowledge and detail in this work is outstanding. My recommendation is that if the idea of 600 pages scares you, take it a section at a time, and if something holds no interest for you, skim through it. (I admit I did that through the pages detailing the history of gas and oil prices of the region).

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Although i did almost gave up on this book.
I'm glad i didn't.

Why Ukraine Matters offers a perceptive and topical examination of the 2022–2023 conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The book begins by tracing the origins of the entwined histories of Russia and Ukraine during their time as a part of the Soviet Union. The author skillfully describes the military aspects of the conflict and, perhaps most importantly, makes a compelling argument for why the international community cannot watch helplessly as Ukraine struggles to remain an independent and democratic country.
Chaudary's analysis of the nation's cultural legacy is among "Why Ukraine Matters"' most compelling features. He brings to life the vibrant traditions, art, and literature that have flourished in Ukraine over the centuries through evocative descriptions and moving anecdotes. Through this cultural lens, readers can better understand the Ukrainian people's tenacity and inventiveness despite their hardships.
Readers can better understand the complexities of the Ukraine conflict thanks to Chaudary's lucid and perceptive writing. Why Ukraine Matters is a very thought-provoking and educational book. It presents a strong argument that the future of the liberal world order is closely linked to that of Ukraine.
Chaudary's prose is readable, captivating, and understandable to readers of all backgrounds throughout the entire book. The book "Why Ukraine Matters" provides insightful information that will enhance your knowledge of this crucial nation, regardless of your level of experience with international relations or your desire to comprehend the significance of Ukraine in the modern world.

This book talks about the Orange Revolution. We know about the Russian invasion of Ukraine but there is a lot of hidden facts that we were not aware of; all of those are explained here in this book. Our author has explicitly mentioned that he has been following Ukraine's crisis since 2004 and he has accumulated data and written this book, so that we all can also learn from his analysis on what lead to 2021's threat of war. In order to understand the present you need to learn about Ukraine and its geopolitics and history. While reading this book I came across several brilliant interpretations of the author wherein he argued on the basis of research. I loved how everything about this book was so well put and raw. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is tragic and heartbreaking to read about but it is also extremely important. To be able to root out such excellent points based on thorough research is such a skill that I can only wish to achieve. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in global politics and history. As parts of the global population we should all learn about international law and its history.

The Russia-Ukraine war is the most talked about rivalry of its time. On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that started in 2014. The invasion became the largest attack on a European country since World War II. It is estimated to have caused tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilian casualties and hundreds of thousands of military casualties.

Fazle Chowdhury has studied this war in detail and has followed it keenly to put forth the exact numbers and situation in front of you. The role of government, diplomats, NATO, and other big bodies have been included to give you a clear picture of where this war stands. Why Russia is behind Ukraine is a big question and Fazle has worked hard to answer that in simple terms.  Most officials believed it would be too risky to allow Ukraine to join NATO as it would upset Russia greatly. This book also talks about the battle of Kyiv that lasted from 25 February 2022 to 2 April 2022 and ended with the withdrawal of Russian forces.
This book will change your mind and allow you to see the real reason and proofs to understand the main motive behind this all. Every essay is scripted with utmost clarity and the proofs given are of great validation.

This book came as an eye-opener and gave me the answers to many questions I had. A must-read without fail.

You must be aware of the war which took place between Russia and Ukraine.
Why did it take place?
Throughout 2021, bilateral tensions rose due to a Russian military buildup surrounding Ukrainian territory, and on 24 February 2022, the conflict saw a major escalation as Russia invaded Ukraine again. Between 2014 and 2022: Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation.

If you are interested to know things related to history this will be a great read for you.
What ensured the presence of this war?
The author has done a commendable job while jotting down this one.
As it is quite a researched book. Also, the language used is quite straightforward to understand. Not only the topic but the writing style of this book is too awesome.

Little did we know that conflicts were taking place between them since 2004. This book comprises four different parts. If you are curious to know the complete circumstances between Ukraine and Russia this book will be the perfect guidance.

In all this book comprises four parts namely,
1. The Past Has Warnings
2. The Consequences
3. The Others
4. Taking On The Perpetrators

If you are interested in reading books and gathering knowledge about history then this will be the perfect one for you.

In recent times we have come across few situations which has not only shocked us but drastically affected our lives. If one thing is COVID the other Russia-Ukraine war. One February morning all news channels were talking about the Russian invasion and war such situation. From that time I have read & heard a lot about this situation but could not totally understand. When I noticed this book I thought this may help me understand the Russian and Ukrainian situation and it's history. In 4 parts and 23 essay/write-ups the author has tried to explain this situation and it's various impacts. I say 'he tried' not because his work is incomplete or he has left back some points, I say it so because I believe the link or relationship between these two countries is more complicated. The author has started with the brief history of the two countries and it's political and economical factors. Further he moves with the involvement and impact of other countries like- involvement of European countries, the idea of America, China factor, and many more. What I enjoyed the most in this book is the geopolitical aspect of this invention. Just like the author said I'm having doubts about the stand of NATO and European countries.

Whenever I come across a good historical political non fiction, i feel intimidated but this book changed my mind. When i delved deep into this book i felt these true events are well researched, thought provoking, and are just as riveting as fiction. In fact, it was even harder to put down, because all of this stuff really happened.
Fazle Chowdhury's 'Why Ukraine Matters' page turner of book tells us tale surrounding the history and geopolitical aspects to it that led to the current predicament stating 24 February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine is part of a long Russian siege and occupation that began since the 2004 November Orange Revolution.
The writing is outstanding, its tragic and hard to take and the author has done a commendable job presenting his point of view. Each chapter clarifies points from all angles, explaining history and root of the issues and gives us a new bone chilling perspective to ponder over. Honestly the book delivers excellent scholarship in a narrative tone which is easy to grasp and hard to put down.
I simply found this book to be incredibly relevant and vital to the present time.
I feel books like these should be talked about. So big shout out to Fazle Chowdhury giving us readers this book.

Lastly, after covid the top new that left world shaking was about Russia and Ukrainian war.
Ukraine has been a part of a long Russian siege and occupation that began since the 2004 November Orange Revolution.

This book "Why Ukraine Matters" by Fazle Chowdhury is an analytic work surrounding the history & geopolitics of Ukraine. Fazle Chowdhury has been following Ukraine’s crisis since 2004. A critic of the European Union, NATO, and in his sequence of acerbic explanations have described the roots of Ukraine’s present circumstances inflicted from its inception. It also explains the present predicament.

The book is described in 4 parts.
Part 1- The Past has Warnings
Part 2- The Consequences
Part 3- The Others
Part 4- Taking on the perpetrators

These essays are based on Fazle Chowdhury’s analysis reflecting his chilling observances. In his view, Ukraine's inclusion in NATO is only the beginning, but it also inflames Ukrainian nationalism that threatens Russian nationalism within Ukraine, feeding into Russian security fears. This is what the book wants to reflect.

Recommended to everyone who is curious about The invasion & the war between Russia & Ukraine.

Happy reading folks!!

Why Ukraine Matters is a geo-politically analytical book which includes historical background explaining the most discussed topic of this year- Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Author started studying Ukrainian matter for his undergraduate thesis and this book is a result of his research as well as his discussion with retired foreign diplomats and some of his UN colleagues. The content comes in four parts - The past has warnings, Thr consequence, The others and Taking on the perpetrators. These four parts illuminate the conflict between western countries and Russia as well as motives and policies of presidents. This book also goes deeper by giving a thorough description of causes, effects and the reality of the war. It also Insightfully points out that this is a war, not a mere technical problem, an all-hands-on-deck crisis.
Inspite of my disliking towards politics, this book hooked me through the end because of its remarkable presentation. It definitely took time to assimilate the matter within me but undoubtedly made me understand the real scenario. Most importantly this book is not biased on any side rather makes you think logically about both sides.

I am quite intrigued by the way the author has written this book.
He clearly describes all the reasons and thinking behind the current war situation in Ukraine. I had been studying medicine in ukraine when the war struck and was quite sure that the russian president made a wrong move by starting a war. After reading the book i can't say that i totally support ukraine or russia but i understand the reason behind what steps are being taken on either side.
This book doesn't support ukraine or russia but it clearly explains the reason as to why the current issues are happening.

I enjoyed reading this book even though i am not interested in reading politics related books most days.
The writing style of the author is quite gripping and the language is rich.
I would suggest you to read this book to get an overview of the current war situation and how it is going to affect the world.
You might not be interested in politics but you will be affected equally by what happens around the world.
Happy reading!
