It was an okay story. This one was the third in the series. I haven't read the first two books, but I don't feel like I particularly missed anything either.
Tabby is a decent protagonist. I just don't get why every author had to have some civilian who solves every crime in all of these small towns, either with or without the police. If the protagonist is that good at solving crimes, shouldn't they be on the police force or at least a PI? I find it hard to believe that the higher-ups at the police department are always fine with some random person helping with cases.
The rest of the characters are kind of bland and one-dimensional. Jay is the detective who asks Tabby for her help on all the cases. Marigold is the head of the local witches, who has a chip on her shoulder about everyone and everything. But even with that chip, she's kind of bland. Rachel is the devoted acolyte who doesn't want to cross the head witch. Honestly, the character who was the most interesting was Katie, and she's only on like a dozen pages. Seriously, give that girl more page time. I want to know about her and why she seems to be more than she appears.
The whole church goers vs. the witches fued was really not important. Other than a few complaints at the beginning, it really isn't mentioned as anything important to the plot. Honestly, this whole plot point could have made way more of an impact during the whole investigation if it was played up more.
The victim was some random guy from out of town. I feel like that was another huge miss. I didn't read the first two, but having some random person be the victim just didn't cause any connection for me. It was sad that some random person got murdered, but no one in town had a connection to him, which meant the reader didn't have a connection to him.
The other thing I thought was a miss is the lack of supernatural things. Seriously, there is a witch on the cover. So, show me some spooky stuff. But other than Tabby mind talking to her cat and having a couple of crystals that affect her dreams or warm up if she's saying the right thing or goes cold if someone is lying, there is nothing else in a story that includes a whole coven of witches. Really? I would have enjoyed it more if the witches were actually seen doing something magical rather than just running a haunted house.
There are apparently more books in this series, but honestly, I don't see myself reading any of them.
My rating: 3 stars
