This book makes a strong case for why Samaaj needs to be the first sector and not the third. The author has many interesting and thought provoking ideas on how Samaaj can do better and how each citizen can do more to make this earth, this country, this city a better place. Rohini Nilekani was an activist in her youth and that comes through.

So it’s a good book.

However I expected more from her. This book doesn’t have ideas on how to ensure that Samaaj becomes the first sector. As she herself says, she’s in a unique position where she has had a unique perspective on all three sectors. She’s doesn’t use that perspective to present a plan where Sarkaar and Bazaar serve the Samaaj. The tone is very social sector. Not that of someone uniquely connected to all three and who has a voice that’s heard by all. Is she being politically safe?

Have heard Rohini talk about the idea multiple times and I completely agree with the idealogy. To say that samaaj should be called the first sector and not third makes a lot of sense. While the ideas were great, I thought the book was repetitive for me having heard her multiple times in the past.

Interesting book which compiles talks, articles, interviews and essays of and by Rohini Nilekani delivered over the last 15 years. Each of them in different ways explores the interplay of Samaaj, Sarkaar and Bazaar in tackling the social and economic problems in the country. Samaaj-Sarkaar-Bazaar is an interesting framework by which to look at issues, but beyond that I didn't find any mindblowing insights in the book. It is, however, a good book for someone to learn about development issues and how to tackle them
