A collection of over a decade of articles, interviews, and speeches by Rohini Nilekani, Samaaj, Sarkaar, Bazaar: A Citizen-First Approach, showcases her journey in civil society and philanthropy. She outlines her philosophy of restoring the balance between the state and markets, by positioning society as the foundational sector.
This book makes a strong case for why Samaaj needs to be the first sector and not the third. The author has many interesting and thought provoking ideas on how Samaaj can do better and how each citizen can do more to make this earth, this country, this city a better place. Rohini Nilekani was an activist in her youth and that comes through.
So it’s a good book.
However I expected more from her. This book doesn’t have ideas on how to ensure that Samaaj becomes the first sector. As she herself says, she’s in a unique position where she has had a unique perspective on all three sectors. She’s doesn’t use that perspective to present a plan where Sarkaar and Bazaar serve the Samaaj. The tone is very social sector. Not that of someone uniquely connected to all three and who has a voice that’s heard by all. Is she being politically safe?
Have heard Rohini talk about the idea multiple times and I completely agree with the idealogy. To say that samaaj should be called the first sector and not third makes a lot of sense. While the ideas were great, I thought the book was repetitive for me having heard her multiple times in the past.
Would recommend the book because she introduces and talks about some very important things for society
Interesting book which compiles talks, articles, interviews and essays of and by Rohini Nilekani delivered over the last 15 years. Each of them in different ways explores the interplay of Samaaj, Sarkaar and Bazaar in tackling the social and economic problems in the country. Samaaj-Sarkaar-Bazaar is an interesting framework by which to look at issues, but beyond that I didn't find any mindblowing insights in the book. It is, however, a good book for someone to learn about development issues and how to tackle them
Not very coherently structured. Book is a compilation of interviews, so there is no proper sequence. Lot of redundancy as well. But a good starter to understand the social sector challenges.
What if you had the power to change the world? That is what Rohini Nilekani wishes to accomplish. For more than a decade, this Indian social entrepreneur has worked to improve India's civil society sector, which is the backbone of any functioning democracy or civilisation
disappointing so far. the gandhi cocksucking is getting too much for me atm lol. was hoping for a more nuanced and hands-on approach to citizen-first activism
The book is a compilation of interviews, talks and essays that Rohini has written over the last decade. Fairly easy to read - the book doesn't present new jargon but re-iterates the balance that needs to be maintained in society.

Rohini Nilekani offers her viewpoint on how society, the government, and markets can coexist peacefully for the benefit of all. She advise that all three entities must coexist to prevent one from displacing another or from growing too powerful.
Nice book! This book offers a perceptive examination of the delicate balancing act between society, the state, and the market, with society at the helm.
