You know when you start a new job or class, and it feels like everyone knows each other and you just kind of have to pick up in the middle of things? That's what this series felt like. I understand that it's part of its own universe, which is fine, but a lot of it felt very, "by the way...". I expect errors in books like this, but some were so glaring that I wonder if it was proofread at all. The continuity was also pretty blurred. I swear she was 34 when the book started and she received the record book, then suddenly she's 36 and has had the book for years. Now I've realized that it never explained who sent her the book (or maybe it did, and I missed it). Same with Heike... what ever happened to her? It felt like when a new season of a series suddenly uses all different actors. Who are these people? Did the names suddenly change, or did I miss something? I don't mind when authors self-insert themselves as a character in their stories. My only issue with this author clearly doing so is that Lizzie was the only one who got her expressions described. Reading about her wrinkled nose, or tilted head, or the creases in her forehead got old very quickly. I didn't care for John. Lizzie was yet another woman who thinks, "Oh he's kind of controlling and I don't like a lot of what he does, but he's attractive and says he loves me so teehee." I did like the adventure and the overall premise of the series, and now zombie werewolves are my new favorite horror creature. I just wish it had been either more about the romance, or more about the adventure, because as an inbetween it was difficult to really fall into.
The slam bang pace of Lizzie's adventures kept me reading far too long, too many times. Lizzie has no idea that she has magic. A mysterious book arrives at her home. Then a mysterious man. The world of magic suddenly becomes her world, as well. Lizzie has to adjust as she meets folks from the various magic communities. Her first and primary introduction and adventures are with the Lycan (think werewolf) community, especially John, her mysterious visitor. Lizzie careens from one life threatening and altering crisis to another. Romance blossoms. Lizzie learns and grows with her magic. If you enjoy adventure with suspense but not too much in the way of explicit blood and guts, this is a series for you. If you like characters that are easy to engage with and care about, you will also likely enjoy this series. I gave it five stars. I like it a lot.
Lizzie is in her mid 30's and unexpectedly discovers she is a spell caster. This happens after she is sent an old book that she can barely see the words to. An alpha lycan tells her it is the history of his people and very few can read it. She is one. This leads her into numerous adventures and dangerous missions with the alpha and with paranormal police, all while trying to learn to use her magic. There is romance, bad guys, action, and death. I loved the series, but there were some unanswered questions I had. It was not clear who sent her the book. Nor was it known who put the block on her magic when she was a child. There was also a secondary romance that was not resolved. But, there is one more related book about Lizzie best friend, Kenna, that I am about to read. So maybe these and other questions will be resolved in it.
I really loved the layering of discovery and the sense of being overwhelmed by Lizzie after she finds out that she has magic. As a reader, you begin to wonder what secrets your friends aren't telling about themselves, much like she learns that she is falling for a werewolf - or I mean Lycan, for those who are insulted by the old term. Who knew about the intrigue in the magic community?
I really hope the last book in this series isn't the end of Lizzie, John, Kenna and company. I want the story to continue, especially with all the loose ends to tie up.
I had read the first book and was planning on reading the rest of the books but I didn’t get the chance because I had to shut down my kindle. I was finely able to get it fixed. I reread the first book and immediately ordered the rest of the books. I couldn’t put them down. Thanks for another great Reed.
I really enjoyed this series, and the expanding universe. I really hope there are other books that these characters get to play in. There was a lot of action, magic, dragons, Lycans, etc. I recommend this series and universe.
This story had it all and then some. It was very well written and very interesting on many levels. I love the way Lizzie and John worked out, and the integration of all the friends. It was great!
This a very fun read. The story lines entertaining and the characters are very likeable. Well except for the villains and they are very easy to despise.
