The Bloodstone Brooch

Former Navy SEAL meets childhood crush in 1896 New York City
Where danger lurks, romance blooms, and old wounds surface...

Former Navy SEAL Tavis Stuart knows he has a lot to be thankful for. His son, Joseph, is bright and healthy, and they’re living an extraordinary life with a community of friends who have shared many of the adventures Tavis can never discuss with regular people like his brother Mark. But Tavis still grieves for his sweet wife, who died in childbirth, and his frustration and sadness are like an itch he can’t reach.

So when his estranged mother, Samantha Stewart, calls on Christmas night to ask for his help he says no until she tells him her goddaughter and Tavis’s childhood best friend, archaeologist Aislinn Kennedy, has gone missing. Then when Samantha tells him Aislinn disappeared from the museum in Rome where she was working on a Greek and Roman treasure found in a North Dakota cave, he agrees to help.

After consulting with Elliott Fraser, Tavis calls Gabe Moretti, a family member managing MacCorp Wineries in Italy. Gabe breaks into the museum, reviews the security tape, and discovers Aislinn found a Celtic brooch inside an artifact and disappeared in a fog. Now the clan must figure out where she went.

Aislinn Kennedy is immersed in a challenging project in Rome. While examining a white marble steatopygous from 4500 BC, she discovers an ancient brooch hidden inside the fertility figure. The brooch has a stunning bloodstone in the center engraved with a Gaelic chant. When she reads the chant aloud, she is immediately surrounded by a peat-smelling fog that takes her on a whirligig trip through space.

When she emerges from the fog, she’s in New York City in 1896, where she befriends banker Solomon Loeb, who introduces her to Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt. No sooner does she accept a job to work as Roosevelt’s secretary than she is reunited with Tavis, rekindling feelings they had for each in high school.

Aislinn is ready to go home, but they can’t leave until they find three mysterious objects, which are also being hunted by an ancient, evil enemy set on destroying the MacKlenna Clan. It is possible the objects can’t be found, even with the expert help of two world-renowned archaeologists. And if they can’t be found, the members of the clan will never be safe again.

This story contains violence, sexually explicit scenes, and adult language and may be considered offensive to some readers.

Who really wrote those first chapters

I read all books in this series, some 2x when I had to go back after losing track for a couple of years. I thought I knew all the characters to this point, as well as their behaviors, so I was surprised when Elliot was drinking alcohol. Did he normally do that?
Similarly, the “older” members of the family were more like able because we got to know them from the slowly built character development of the earlier books.
Some new characters, like Tavis, aren’t even people I’d like to sit next to at a dinner party.
I’d want to stuff a turkey leg in his mouth. What is this idea that a man can be a boor, actually a troll, but in a handsome body and privileged, and that’s okay? The life lessons we were taught involved developing your mind, behavior, altruism and feeling for others. Then, if something took your looks, or crippled you, that would affect your outside. Outer beauty can be fleeting. Our elders taught us to develop our inner selves.
Tavis is a self-absorbed, immature, foul-mouthed, spoiled man-child and he never experiences anything truly challenging to improve himself beyond that. We’re to believe that his acquisition and near immediate bedding of his longtime crush, as well as his immediate impregnating of her, somehow “completes” him. Now he’s a real man? Not in this lifetime.
Each of the earlier, established characters have struggled, pitting themselves against the odds, and did things that resulted in their personal growth. We were proud of them. All became less self-absorbed. All opened their eyes and saw the world differently.
That’s when they could finally see they deserved love.
Think of JL. She felt unworthy due to hiding a teenage pregnancy. Austin was totally stuck on himself and “hardheaded” until his accident. Dave suffered a lifetime not knowing his paternity and didn’t feel capable of being loved, yet he’s such an admired person. Jack, Kenzie, Penney, they all struggled.
This book is entertaining but I don’t know which English 101 student won the contest and got to write those first chapters. Geez! No wonder reviewers complained about not being able to get into the story.
Also, why virtually no one liked what all are calling sex scenes they skipped over. Those pages were like directions from IKEA.
Sensual vs sexual. Read again the scenes from whatever book it was that described Jack’s naked body and the tattoo on his back of a ?dragon? that swirled around his exquisite body while he himself was lost in thought and ……
See what I mean. That’s sensual, not to be confused with sexual. (See. Now you’re going to go thru the earlier books to find Jack’s story)
Finally, readers don’t have to be prudes to wish “f**k could be used more judiciously. ( See, I’m hiding it. I shouldn’t have to)
It isn’t rudely used around us like this everyday (most of us) and to write it, as it was, throws us out of our mode of concentration and so we think about that word instead of the sentence that follows. Like we would if our BFF said it loudly at dinner with our parents, every night.
See if you agree that dependence on profanity in a book or movie suggests that the character has a hard time communicating and fills in the gaps with uncomfortable language.
If you take the immature characters, the mostly male cousins and brothers who are obnoxious not only to each other, but to their elders and slap them up side the head once in a while, that would be highly entertaining.
The real grownups should take each of these yahoos and just straighten them out. I just kept waiting for that to happen to the younger folks the way it happened to the first generation in earlier books.

Hey, looking forward to the next book.

TOO MANY CHARACTERS. I loved the beginning of this series. Character development and romance. A bit of history. But now, there are so many characters from previous books I have no idea who is who. The new(er) characters aren’t being developed and I don’t feel any interest in them. I’ve been a loyal reader of this series until this and the previous. I think she should wrap it up and create a new series. I’m so bored and at the same time overwhelmed with historical facts and superfluous characters I don’t think I’ll even finish this.

A great windup

This book is full of history, trivia about real persons, descriptions of everything and anything. Many are very interesting but take up a good portion of the book and story.
There are so many family members/characters in these books that it is refreshing to find the genealogical list of characters and who they belong to. Bookmark it, its exceedingly helpful. Although the author does point out the connections in the narrative.
The love stories and back tales were also interesting. But, 6 pages of sexual experiences is a bit much, unless you are into this kind of "fantasy". It can be skim read.
The facts of the legend, history, and experience of the brooches has been long awaited and finally fulfilled. Also some of the family's biology and genealogy has been explained enjoyably.
So, with all this enjoyment, why just three stars? I found the excessive swearing unnecessary. I was married to a career sailor and understand the use of such language. But using the F-bomb in almost every sentence (see Remy here) is uncalled for. Its bad enough coming out of a mans mouth, but worse from a woman/mother's. Then hearing four year olds speak in such a crude uneducated way is run acceptable. I hope Asline can clean up her families speech as she has threatened. 😉

Well what can I say, yet another stellar book, I have been waiting for this since I finished the last book - The Sunstone Brooch. Once again the book led us into the past and the thrill of the chase, a little more explanation on the involvement of Erik and I loved that fact that there are two love stories within this looooooooong book (three days it took to read).

I do feel that the flow of the book was not as cohesive as the others have been and that some stories within were not exactly explained.

There are links at the end of the book to some of the factual elements within the story and these were interesting to read and it develops your own knowledge of history.

Once again I am impressed with the knowledge of historical facts and the fiction that the author manages to write about and make it all seem real. Some authors would be falling by this point with 12 books on the same family but not this one - it improves with each book.

I still gave it a five star review because the author does know how to weave a great time travel story, there is a lot more swearing and erotic sex in this book, but it is done with great description and manages not to appear to be to explicit.

Highly recommended and cant wait for the next one.

Two books. One Great And One arduous

I have read every book in this series. This book was problematic because it’s basically in my humble opinion two books. The first book roughly 1/2 is overwhelmingly filled with voluminous details that were so distracting and annoying. I just think maybe the author was struggling to get the plot through. I think one of the most telling lines in the story was “Send six home “. The first 300 pages were a slog.
But if you know this author's writing she is more than capable of writing a superb novel and she’s done it before, but somehow this book failed in the first half.

That said the second half of this book was the real story. It was this author writing at her best and crafting a story that just held the reader's attention. It was magnificent. It was all about the characters and that’s the legacy of the brooch series. I hope in the future that the books are not centered on unnecessary details. The amount of research and effort by this author deserves better than having the reader bogged down with details, to the point where you lose the storyline.

No matter the genre, this is a must-read series

I've read many historical romance novels but this time travel romance series is unique. It's contemporary, it's magical, and it's sexy. The focus is on building a family of time travelers searching for their souls mates. The brooches pick their people, places, and time. Kathryn Lowry Logan is a master story teller giving life not only to the main characters but to the not-so-main characters. Her ability to weave a story around past USA historical events, to viking warriors, to magical rocks falling from the sky, to the evil faction always seeming to be one step ahead is riveting. This gifted time traveling family is loud, opinionated, passionate, competitive, talented, brilliant, beautiful, and fun. Who doesn't want to be a member? I'm an avid reader. If it's a well written story, I read it. THIS series is one of my all-time favorites. I look forward to the next brooch appearing and the action packed adventures it throws at the next set of time travelers.

Interesting way things were resolved in the end of the "Vikings" portion of the series. While the latest books are about the second generation of travelers, so happy to continue to visit with the original, core group. Love to see Teddy Roosevelt again in this book. As always, the research into historic details interwoven into the story is impeccable. Always learning something new and such fascinating things about our country's history! Makes you want to "read more about it."

Side Note: If you are really interested in Teddy Roosevelt, a terrific in depth series was made by award-winning Ken Burns and shown on PBS a few years ago. It is called "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History chronicles the lives of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt." It's eye opening. Do yourself a favor and watch the episodes on Franklin and Eleanor as well. You won't be sorry.

Riveting, enthralling, epic battles of good vs evil...

I have loved this saga of the Celtic Brooches for years, every edition makes me think how does Katherine Lowery Logan, keep this going and getting better with each new story? This story stretched my imaginations muscles it was fast paced at times and yet luxuriously deliciously slow so the moments of joy could be cherished and the mind refreshed so the next fight against evil could be waged. If you enjoy rich characters, sweeping panarama of the human experience, invest the time to read the entire series, they can be enjoyed separately, but this story was definetly richer by having the legacy of former adventures in my memory. The Bloodstone will stay with me a long time, while I wait for the next adventure to begin. Thank you Katherine for this gift.

A large book, there was a lot packed into this installment of the series. The author had promoted books 11, 12, 13 and 14 as being stories featuring Teddy Roosevelt. Book 11 contained a large amount of Teddy's left in the Badlands. Book 12 was to have a focus on his life in 1890s NYC and his work with the police commission. The story appeared to start of with a focus on the history of that period, but then became hijacked by the actions of a villan, leaving historical elements undeveloped. I feel like the story hijacked our author, which is not a bad thing, but perhaps some of the historical notes introduced earlier should have been removed, rather than leaving you to wonder how it would pull together in a cohesive fashion. Overall a satisfying addition to the series.

I agree with some of the previous reviewers ; I have read each of the books and savored them, I always enjoyed the history, development of characters and the sensuality. I didn't care for the graphic sex scene with Erik & Tavis's mother (please excuse me as I'm having a senior moment). There are so many characters and so many issues (rape, infidelity, broken family) and it seemed they were just thrown in there. I read once on Facebook that the author might have trouble remembering all her characters. I've also seen now where she asks her readers/fans to give suggestions, who should next find love, who should they resemble in looks. Perhaps as so many of us have gone back and reread the early books, maybe Katherine should and see if she lost anything.

A good plot but…

I do enjoy this series. The plots are unique and just go on and on with unlimited possibilities. What I don’t like are the long descriptive sex scenes. I like the romances and it doesn’t bother me that they sleep together - just too many wasted pages - get on with the story already. I find myself flipping pages until I’m past the scene. If I had wanted that kind of book I would’ve bought one. The other thing that bugged me was all the long descriptions of their meals- over and over -too much. It was almost as if the author was trying to get the page count up. That is why the 3 rating.

A spellbinding read

This is another great addition to the Brooch series. The story progresses with fascinating glimpses into a different period of time, places and a few prominent people of that era. There is adventure, suspense, romance ( some sensitively steamy), and the fight for good over evil. There are so many characters all with amazing abilities that I find myself having to pause every now and then to work out who is who and how do they fit in to the whole story. The detail in these books is very impressive.

So much history, sci-fi, folklore, Celtic n Viking stuff plus great character storylines crammed in these ever-lengthening books!!
Cannot recommend them enough 🙌👌
Also a huuuuge thankyou to the author having all the series on Kindle Unlimited, so great to have such amazing quality reading on KU (have experienced some dross during the years I've paid the subscription)

The best Brooch book yet

Even with the cast of characters almost unwieldy in size, KLL has written a complex and engaging tale that finally brings the evil to an end. The high adventure, steamy love scenes and boxing matches somehow all work together. This adventure brings back Teddy Roosevelt as Police Commissioner in New York. I can hardly wait for the next novel now that James Cullen has returned to the family.

Love these books can't wait for the next one!

I'm not really good with words I'm not a writer! But this series is so awesome! Her writing is so different from others I love that her books don't just end with HEA she goes beyond that and includes all the other characters in each book you get to see thier children grow and become part of their parent adventure! Her unique writing style is very refreshing!

Good book

This whole series is super. So many neat people and places and puzzle to solve. That breaks down to a very large family that faces some very unusual problems. The author is a master story teller who does tons of research on everyone of these books. If you are looking for something new and different and includes many different book types these books are for you. I highly recommend!

I have read all the Celtic Brooch books and loved them. Katherine's attention to historic detail is amazing! This book was too long! It could have been pages shorter if the "F" dialogues were erased. I see no reason for highly educated people to use that word. I find it a coarse and low life conversation word.

I know a lot about all the characters, but nothing about Nicole.

The descriptions of the characters in the beginning of the book was helpful, but confusing. A family tree chart would be very helpful.

Celtic Brooch Series

I found it hard to put down any of the books in this series until I finished Book 12. The overall story continues through all of the books to a very satisfying conclusion, while each book introduces new characters with their own stories that also contribute to the main objective of the story. Character development is excellent. Because of explicit sexual content, I would consider this for mature readers. Further books in this series cannot come too soon!

Another hit!

I have been looking forward to The Bloodstone Brooch since I finished The Sunstone Brooch. It did not disappoint. I enjoyed the twist to the working of the brooches and the interaction of the characters. Though I miss the stories of some of the original characters it is great the way the younger group is becoming active in the storyline.

Amazing

There is always so much going on! I can never seem to put it down. There is quite a bit to remember from the previous books but there are a few reminders and explanations of what you need to know. I just wish there was a family tree so I can remember how they are related.

Waiting for the door!

I am enchanted with this series. The way the author holds my mind by threads of excitement and waves of apprehension, makes this book hard to set down. I have enjoyed getting to know her characters. I'm equally excited and apprehensive to read the stories beyond the door!

Five stars for the writing

This was the first book that annoyed me. I rejoiced in the writing for the most part but found the story a tad convoluted and the sex truly the worst, ok maybe not the worst but not that good. Please if you need to write sex scenes start a separate series.

WOW!

1896 New York City…who would guess all the things that could meet in that time and place, not me. Katherine Logan writes with a flair for adventure, romance and historical insights that keep a host of characters busy throughout the story. I have read all the Brooch Books and have enjoyed every adventure. I know you will too!

Quite a recollection

Mostly, this is reacquainting everyone to the “players” in the story.
I find it hard to believe the evil can be defeated , so I am waiting for the next shoe to fall. Always a good read, but a little to easy to digest. Needs a little twist at the end and then, a To Be Continued , for effect!

I still hate what James Cullen went through & I don’t like the insinuations about his sexual preference! I think this turn in the book doesn’t match what we previously new about him!

The rest of the book is great!! Except bad language. I hope that is cleared up in the next book. I love the history in all the books!!

Way too wordy which made the book kind of bland overall. Primary characters storylines were mesmerizing and I just wanted more but way too much time was given to secondary and tertiary characters. Pushed through because I wanted to know how it ended but I was left with a cliffhanger and way more questions than answers. Will more than likely not read next book if there is one.
