Nihongo con Teppei for Beginners was the very first Japanese podcast I ever listened to, and I honestly think it's what took me from "I know some words in Japanese" to "I'm actually able to understand what someone's saying." So I'm really, really grateful to sensei for creating something like this.
Just like the podcast, the essays carry this unique jovial energy and make you feel as if you're simply chatting over a cup of coffee. At the same time, though, the written medium has always seemed better at bringing out deeper and heavier thoughts, so I think the book touches on those a bit more than the podcast does. And that's definitely not something I see as a downside—quite the opposite!
I think the length of the essays was just right. I didn't mind even the longer ones because they were genuinely interesting, and I absolutely loved the transcript of the podcast with Noriko-san.
I also feel like I need to point out how much I appreciated the honesty and humility you can feel throughout the book. Sensei's life seems like a really interesting one, but when he writes about his younger years, you can also feel the doubts and uncertainties that came with them. It's always comforting to see that there's nothing wrong with not being completely sure about your decisions or your future. And I'm glad that sensei seems to have found his "happy place" and that calm, positive way of thinking that can take him wherever he's brave enough to go. (At least that's how I see it. 😅)
I think this is an amazing book for adults who are trying to get into reading in Japanese. It honestly feels like sensei has once again found something Japanese learners needed without even realizing they needed it.
Thank you so much for that.
I can easily imagine myself coming back to this book.
P.S. I've got a few tips for anyone considering reading it:
1. Know some Japanese. 😁
2. Listen to a few episodes of sensei's podcast first. The written words stop being just written words, and somehow you naturally start hearing them loud and clear in your head.
3. Read it on an e-reader with a built-in dictionary (or something similar), so you can simply tap on any kanji you're unsure about. (If I remember correctly, furigana is only provided the first time a word appears.)
Great as a first non-graded reader book to read in Japanese. Enjoyed learning about Teppei's life, as well as his motivations for creating the podcast.
