60 Years in the Saddle: My Love Affair with the Bike

Rate this book
“Billy, there will always be somebody faster.” Bill Logan’s father uttered these words about athletic competition to him when Bill was a kid, and it stoked a competitive fire in Bill that would last for over six decades. 60 Years in the Saddle vividly relates Bill’s life in competitive endurance events , focusing on road and track bicycle racing and culminating in his triumph at the World Duathlon Championship in 2013. Along the way, Bill details life inside the peloton as the nascent sport of bicycle racing developed in the 1960’s and 1970’s, before Americans began competing in cycling’s most famous race, the Tour de France. Bill competed in the Little 500 bicycle race (made famous in the movie “Breaking Away”) as an undergrad at Indiana University and went on to win multiple state road cycling championships in Missouri and Wisconsin. Along the way, Bill introduces you to some ridiculously competitive, funny and quirky cyclists he met in the peloton and shares humorous and heartwarming stories about traveling in Volkswagen Bugs and raising a family. Bill also shares his unique insight on exercise physiology and sports training and discusses his cycling coaching and mentoring philosophies. 60 Years in the Saddle welcomes you into the “pain cave” that is the world of competitive bike racing, as you feel as if you’re racing right beside him, and teaches you valuable lessons about preparation, perseverance, teamwork, humility and challenges to become a good husband and father while devoting so much time to the bike.
