I found the first story on the most excellent The Palace Project app. It's publishable because the original copyright holder couldn't be bothered to renew it. The story is pretty much Maximum Cheese, c. 1942.

The little blurb above gives almost too much away (fixed the spacing issues for easier reading): Hall and Upjohn had to escape from that "No-man's-land" on Mercury. But to form a plan, they had to think — and their captors could read minds.

This is the sci-fi of my youth: improbable tales of derring-do and damned the facts! Give me a rocket ship and a ray gun, and let my imagination go wild. :)

Now I have to go out and find everything else Winterbotham ever published. It can't all be this much fun, but if even half of his work is this good, it will be worth the search.
