A mirror. A golden apple. And two sisters vying for their fate.
Rose lived a perfect life as the princess of the kingdom. Heralded as the gem that represented the end of war and the start of prosperity in the valley, she always believed her time as queen would continue this reign. But her sister had other ideas.
After being locked in a mirror for most of her life, Alda escapes to reclaim the throne from her sister. Yet, when the plan fails, both sisters are forced to flee the castle for the sake of the kingdom and their own lives.
Left struggling alone, both Rose and Alda must face the truth. What is good? What is evil? And who is truly the fairest of them all?
A retelling inspired by Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, with a touch of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, join Rose and Alda as they uncover the secrets of good and evil…and the power of a golden apple.
E.S. Barrison has been writing and creating stories for as long as she can remember. After graduating from the University of Florida, she has spent the past few years wrangling her experiences to compose unique worlds with diverse characters. Currently, E.S. lives in Orlando, Florida with her family. The Mist Keeper’s Apprentice is her first novel.
Once again, E.S. Barrison has crafted a wonderful fairy tale! At less than 100 pages it made for a quick read, but I still felt that the story was complete. I was hooked from the very first page and read it all in one sitting.
Going into the book knowing it was a mix of Snow White and Jekyll and Hyde made it clear the path the story would take, but that didn't make it any less interesting. The author managed to take the well-known stories and weave them into a unique retelling that still felt fresh despite its classic roots. There are definitely some great twists along the way.
If you're looking for a fairy tale retelling that's quick and interesting that sticks somewhat to its Grimm roots (pun intended), I recommend you check this novella out.
A quick Retelling that perfectly combined Snow White with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide. The very short chapters at the end provided an interesting structural component to the story.
I had the pleasure of meeting the author at Megacon and am so pleased to find her work. I love stories based on fairy tales so I purchased two of them (and honestly just ordered the third yesterday).
Rosealda is the story that would have been born if Jekyll & Hyde met Snow White. It is told from two points of view and, like other fairy tales, explores the nature of good and evil in a way that nudges the reader forward into questioning absolute truths. The ending also leaves the reader with the question: "What do YOU think should happen?"
As this is more a short story than a "book," it can be read in one sitting with your favorite cup of tea and transport to you to a time in your childhood when you thought magic was real. I loved it (and the other one I purchased, will likewise leave a review) and look forward to reading the third one.
Snow White is my favorite fairytale, and this Jekyll and Hyde retelling was very interesting to read. It was impressive that the author was able to fit so much in this short book, and still have it make sense. As this series progresses her character work improves. I like how short and sweet these fairytales are, while providing a unique perspective on these classics.
‘Snow white and the seven dwarfs’ meets ‘Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’, so unique and so enjoyable. I liked the development and twists that I never saw coming. This series has a special place in my heart, they’re quick, well written and you’ll never read anything quite like them. I hope there will be more in the future!
Snow White meets Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde! A very cool way to revisit both of these stories while exploring why it is necessary to embrace both the Yin and the Yang within us all.
I love all E.S. Barrison's Unsought Fairy Tales, and each one becomes my new favorite! Looking forward to the next one! 😀
Another engrossing tale! I'm continually amazed by the author's writing prowess and mastery of story. This is a story that could have kept going, but ends in a way to have you hunger for more.
My favorite work of Barrison’s so far! Finished it in one day. Like always, Barrison is great at providing hints but not giving everything away. This story was entertaining and I could not tell where it was going, despite my familiarity with the Snow White tale. Wonderful story!
