USS Hamilton #6

USS Adams: No Escape

Rate this book
USS Adams - No Escape - Book 6 of the USS Hamilton Series.

Captain Galvin Quintos, along with his irreverent crew, is back and facing his most harrowing enemy yet. As the battle within the Eta Carinae Star System rages on with the Varapin, Quintos is forced to make a deal with the devil, one Commander Dunft Choob. Sure, Quintos has saved the pirate world of Haven—but at a heavy price. Oblivion, the most powerful warship in the known galaxy, will be reluctantly returned to the Varapin ghouls. Pleidian Empress Shawlee arrives on the scene, bringing with her two familiar dreadnoughts, USS Hamilton and USS Jefferson, but also a new dreadnought, USS Adams—a ship recommissioned and converted to a Gilded Age luxury liner, then, all too quickly, turned back into a warship. She might not be ready for the demands of Quintos’s crew—not to mention intergalactic warfare—but there is no time to figure that out. If that’s not stressful enough for Quintos, Doc Viv is about to share something that will bring him to his knees.

Meanwhile, Captain Gail Pristy is keeping vigil over Quintos’s secret hideaway back within the Lost Tombstone Star System. She now asks just one thing of Quintos—find the Varapin transport ship Boundless Wrath, which has imprisoned her EUNF US Space-Navy crew members. While locating the ship might not be difficult for Quintos, chasing her down will be. Inexplicably, both ships find themselves within an alternate universe—with propulsion and weapons systems off-line. Now, a hostile alien species called the Ziu, with many hundreds of warships, is quickly closing in on them.

Wait, what?

If I were waiting for the next book to come out, I'd be hopping mad at that ending. As it is, I'm reading the series just as the latest book has come out on audio, which is book 14. I feel bad for those who were reading the series as it came out book by book.

This is the last of the series that's being narrated by James Patrick Cronin. I am so sad about that because he is just so good. He is the voice of Gavin Quintos. It'll be hard to get used to John Pirhalla in the next book.

So we have new adversaries in this installment. The pirates are largely gone except for those loyal to Quintos, and he's got a special place for them. Kind of an affinity for the way they are so loyal to those who lead them. There's also Hardy and his little friend Iris, which could be just dumb but instead it's very sweet.

And those Varathin will just not give up. Even in an alternate universe.

Then we have Captain Tristy over on the Sanctuary, a space station turned ship. And the abandoned base on the planet below. That's another disaster waiting to happen. And yet more story arcs with a time traveling military guy (not sure what rank) who wants her to lead the start of an army changing timelines all over the place.

Holy story arcs, Batman.

The whole thing continues to be pretty interesting. I'm not bored at all; in fact, I'm interested in this characters enough to keep going. It gets like this with these long series. At some point you're invested and even if the book isn't the stellar one of the series, you keep going because it's good enough. In this case, though, we need to just get rid of those Varathin. They're starting to get on my last nerve. And these new aliens are just plain weird.

So it's on to the next book with a new narrator. That may be the end point for me depending on the quality of the narration. But for now, I gotta see what happens. We need to get these guys out of that alterenate universe and reunited with Sanctuary and Gail and all this time travel business. It's a complicated puzzle and I need to see how it resolves at this midpoint.

“USS Adams: No Escape”, sixth in the 'USS Hamilton' series, is unusual in that it doesn't really work on its own.
It also doesn't so much end as come to a stop
Think of it as setting the scene for further adventures.
Facing almost certain defeat Captain Galvin Quintos escapes through a last-minute wormhole, only to find that he is now stuck in an alternate universe.
A universe where his engines don't work.
And a vast new enemy fleet is closing in fast.
Nothing new here!
Meanwhile, back at base a deadly virus has taken hold and billions will die over decades unless …
Unless, in this case, is pulling a time travelling rabbit out of the hat.
It is not the strongest in the series but I have a weakness for Space Opera and, outside of the scientific explanations, enjoyed it.
3 Stars.

The ending came too Quick!

Captain Galvin Quintos is still in deep battle with the Varapin and it is not looking like either side is going to come out a winner.  Is there going to be a solution to his dilemma and what will the costs be and can you really trust the Varapin....or can they trust him?

Was a really good book and the ending just seemed to come out of nowhere!   Like what is this?  There are no more pages?  It's not quite a cliffhanger you know what is likely to happen but still feels like the earth moved under my feet.  Sure hope I can remember what happened by the time the next book comes out.

still a pretty good read but…..

Tha transition from SciFi to Fantasy was a bit much for me. The story delved into The Perils of Pauline. I would prefer ( personally) a SciFi story with a breather between one catastrophe and 3 or 4 others. If this had been book 1 I wouldn’t have made it to book 2. The author obviously researches heavily and describes the physics well. Please return from Fantasy world to ScFi like RAH.

Once again, we find Capt. Quintos jumping from one fire to another or should that be ships? But we are left on a cliffhanger this time. So I am looking forward to the next book to see how the USS Adams and her crew can get back to their own universe, and what is going to happen to Pristy and her team??

WOW!!!

Mr. McGinnis continues to write exciting, page turning stories. I highly recommend the USS Hamilton series. Every book is packed with action and character building. The changes for each character is as amazing as the story itself. The action scenes are amazing, and the plot outstanding. Read this series!!!

What a great series.

Six great reads. Action aplenty, character-driven. And full of snappy dialogue. I rebooted them and hope to have more. Stop what you are doing and start reading.

amazing dynamic two tales going

Loved the back and forth between the two storylines but what an adventure. Will Galvin man up with Dr viv and is there any hope to get out of this alternate universe? I can’t wait for the next chapter and pray there will be some resolutions

A little dIsappointed

A lot of this book was spent on unbelievable trite. From The Council of nine to the 2'0s and their fantasy. I just skipped through those whole chapters. Hope the next book has more to it.

Same fast paced story telling as most of the others in this series. The difference is that you are left hanging as this book was a bit shorter than previous ones. Look forward to next :-)

Reuse is best

Fine series with a good backdrop of developing branches, and even some human frailty thrown in for comfort. Not certain if the jump coils are warm yet.

Becoming more of a teen book

The series started off great, but now it's becoming more and more of a juvenile level series. More fantasy and not a s level headed.

Nope. Not going down that road

The author must have started to run out of ideas on how to keep this series going, because he has introduced a whole new storyline, regarding time travel, alternative dimensions and the guardians thereof that has so many holes in the concept I won't be bothering with it any further
