EMP Aftermath #3

Dangerous World: A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Saga Filled With Fascinating Characters & Prepper Info

Rate this book
You don’t survive the apocalypse without making a few enemies…

Laurel has found a safe haven at Lone Oak Hospital. But her loved ones are still back at South Minneha, and her mother desperately needs her. Winter has blanketed the city in impenetrable layers of snow making any chance of returning to her hospital on foot almost impossible. Then disaster strikes Lone Oak Hospital and, in order to survive, Laurel must venture out into the harsh Minnesota winter, and risk everything in a world gone dark and cold.

Meanwhile, Bear has reached South Minneha, only to find Laurel gone. As the temperature plummets, he struggles to keep the other survivors from freezing to death in the brutal cold. And when the blizzard finally lets up, he faces a difficult choice: leave now to search for Laurel, or risk being snowed in until spring.

The Minnesota winters are deadly, but they’re not the worst thing out there. Laurel and Bear have made enemies… Savage foes, who hunt them even as they search for each other. And they’re slowly closing in.

A new storm is coming. And Bear and Laurel must unite if they are to have any hope of survival.

Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

This added to the story and there were hints re what was coming up with mae throughout the novel and the ending was tantalising.

I do appreciate a good disaster story and this author makes them very readable but also relatable. I turned a tear for Jess having rescue dogs myself.

Updated for audio version

I am going through a relisten/re-read of this series and the series continues to work well. Sometimes you just need to escape into a relatable disaster story. I like the characters and seeing them develop. Jess is a character in her self (I am a sucker for dogs being included) There were elements of suspense and some violence but it wasn't too extreme so it was easy to listen to.

This is book three of the EMP Aftermath series and sees both Laurel and Bear having to make difficult decision as winter storms hit hard. Laurel (Dr Rivera) has made the difficult journey with Arlo and his son Liam, all the way to Lone Oak Hospital in search of chemo drugs for Liam, as well as for the other boy back at South Minneha Hospital, Peter, whose meds Arlo insisted his son have. Laurel has had to leave her ill mother Deb there and hopes Lone Oak may have some meds that will help with her treatment as well. Laurel wants to get back to her mother and her hospital as soon as she can, but she can’t return without Arlo, or his people will take revenge on her and her patients. Meanwhile, Bear has made it to South Minneha Hospital, with the teenage Trent he picked up at the start, as well as his faithful dog Jess (Jessamine), only to find that Laurel has gone! Due to the severe weather, he has to hunker down and help the people there to survive the harsh conditions as best as he can. He comes up with a few helpful ideas and creations, to keep everyone warmer and bring everyone together. But he is just waiting for the weather to clear enough to leave, to get to Laurel at last. They may have separated a couple of years ago, but they never divorced, so they are still married and the EMP strike has made it clear he still wants her and their daughter Mae, back in his life. Laurel has no idea if Bear (Bjorn Peterson) even knows about the EMP and what is happening around the country, since he moved to an isolated cabin near Thunder Bay in Canada. His injury led to him avoiding places with loud noises and to preferring wide open spaces and the peace and quiet they could bring.
Each finally sets out to look for the other, not knowing the other is also doing so. They also know nothing of the other people who are out there and looking for revenge. Arlo has enemies that are chasing him still and Laurel being with him, puts her in the sights of these dangerous foes as well. Bear had to take some disturbing actions to keep the people in the hospital safe from people attacking them, leaving him no choice in what resulted. It wasn’t something he wanted to do and it has left a very angry woman wanting revenge against him personally, for what he did to her boyfriend and his followers. Laurel and Bear made their decisions to move before they would be stuck where they were until spring when the snows would begin to melt. Neither is going to have an easy time of it on their journey and will meet with someone from the recent past as well as the angry foes set on revenge against both parties. These savage foes are closing in and matters will turn deadly, as a fight for their very survival comes calling. Laurel and Bear will end up united in their desire to survive and to make it back to where Laurel now calls home, at South Minneha Hospital. When they do, the realisation that there is still one member of the family they haven’t managed to locate, will lead to the final episode in this series. I can’t wait to read it and see how they manage to locate Mae and what has been happening to her. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Laurel, Arlo, and Liam arrived safely at Lone Oak Hospital, where they found the medication Liam needed to survive. Then winter set in with heavy snow. Laurel, Arlo, and Liam have to stay at the hospital until the snow eases up enough for them to return to Minneha Hospital.

A woman and her husband come to Lone Oak asking for help; her husband is very sick, and if they stay out in the cold, they will die. Laurel goes against the new rules that hospital staff voted on and lets the couple inside. It turns out that the husband has something more dangerous than the flu. After he dies and the illness begins to spread, Laurel, Liam, and Arlo set out for Minneha Hospital, where Laurel works.

When they return to Minneha Hospital, Laurel wants to go find her husband, Bear. She doesn’t think he knows about the EMP because he lives off the grid. Meanwhile, Bear is making his way to her. Their journeys are long, hard, cold, slow, and dangerous as they navigate through the snow.

Bear picks up a stalker he met leaving the hospital— a woman determined to get revenge for the death of her boyfriend. She follows Bear without his or his loyal dog Jessamine’s knowledge.

Dangerous World grabbed my attention from the very first page and kept it long after I finished reading. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, as I love reading the EMP Aftermath books or any end-of-the-world stories like this one. I just can’t get enough of them. The more I read, the more I want because they are so captivating.

The world-building is incredibly well done. The descriptions are so vivid that I had no trouble visualizing everything as if I were watching a movie. Speaking of which, I would love to see Dangerous World — and all the books in the EMP Aftermath series — adapted into a movie, or even better, a TV show.

I highly recommend Dangerous World to all fans of end-of-the-world stories! Grab your copy today!

Endings and Beginnings

I have now listened to the first three books of this series, and I'm finding it much more interesting and enjoyable to follow than I thought I would! This is right in the middle of the current series, and it certainly feels like a turning point, both wrapping up several storylines and teasing the next. This book certainly showed some character development for those who hadn't always acted the best in previous books. I'll admit that I'm a sucker for a redemption story, and this book had two. There are a few surprising—and surprisingly sad, given what we knew of the characters—deaths in this book that wrapped up storylines that had threaded from the first book of the series to this. It also has a happy reunion as well as showing resilient people fighting against incredible odds and challenging circumstances. We've heard a bit about the adult daughter of the couple in this story, and the epilogue reveals where she is currently at and her state of mind. I'm guessing a next major thrust of this series will be about the family reuniting, with parents and daughter coming together finally. The secondary characters are fantastic. I particularly love Trent, a teenage boy, orphaned at the start of the book, who is certainly becoming a strong and resourceful young man under the guidance of his self-adopted father—the hero—whom he has lovingly nicknamed PB, standing for Papa Bear! I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to this group next!

I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.

This book #3 in the series picks up where the last book left off with Laurel at Lone Oak hospital with Arlo and his son Liam, trying to get treatment for his cancer. Through working together to survive, Laurel has gone from Arlo's hostage to his friend. But can she convince him to leave the safety of Lone Oak to return to South Mineha where her mother and friends are depending on her return?
Meanwhile, Bear and Trent have reached South Mineha only to find Laurel gone. He helps them to prepare for the coming blizzard but then must make a choice... stay and weather out the storm or continue on in his search for his wife. Enemies he's made along the way stalk his every move and he'll have to rely on his military experience and a little luck in order to survive.
I'm so excited that the reunion I've been waiting for finally happened, but the relationship is tense and strained. This book was full of action between fighting the elements and the enemies following them. I can't wait for the next book to see how Bear and Laurel work things out!

I have enjoyed other Grace Hamilton stories and was excited to start this series. I really enjoy a good dystopian story. I recommend reading the books in order to get the most out of the series. Book 3 picks up where book 2 left off. The story follows the lives of several characters following an EMP which wiped out electronics and electrical utilities. The story is well written. Good world and character development. I used the audio version, and I could see in my mind’s eye the story unfold, like watching a movie. Loved how it changed from different characters viewpoints. I liked how the story included a view into different communities, and how each can have different chances of survival. We take modern medicine for granted. In a survival scenario, minor ailments could kill you, and contagion can spread fast. I listened to the story every chance I had. I know the story has to end, but I was not ready for it to do so. The narration was excellent. I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving my review.

I loved Dangerous World. I always have very high expectations of Grace Hamilton’s books and she has never failed to stand up to be counted. It’s great when you’re reading and keep turning the page to see what happens next and all that reading comes to fruition when what you wanted to happen happens, but the book isn’t finished yet and so with trepidation start reading the last chapter and lo and behold I didn’t expect what was written there at all. I probably should have because there was bits and pieces mentioned, but I didn’t. Unfortunately I need to wait until the next book is released to see how the last chapter is played out. Another brilliant book and I highly recommend it.

Another wonderful book in this series. I couldn't put it down, my heart is still pounding. There is still the drama of being hunted not only by the cold Minnesota winters but also all the enemies looking for Bear and Laurel. Read and find out why Laurel had to leave the safety of Lone Oak Hospital to venture out in the cold and dark. Also what decision does Bear make, stay with the survivors or look for Laurel? I am so looking forward to book four and the conclusion of Laurel and Bear's quest. Good job Grace.

Dangerous World is book three of the EMP Aftermath series and it picks up where book two left off so you should definitely read the first two books before this one otherwise you will be lost. While being hunted by enemies Laurel and Bear are determined to reunite and winter has hit Minnesota. Once again Grace Hamilton gives the readers realistic it-could-happen scenarios action packed with danger, suspense, unexpected twists, descriptive writing, and captivating storylines. I look forward to reading the rest of the series to find out what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

This is the third installment in the amazing EMP Aftermath Series, a post-apocalyptic survival fiction. Laurel and Bear's story continues where the second book left off. The storyline is breathtakingly entertaining and enthralling, filled with action, danger, suspense, and twists and turns. The world building is captivating. The writing is brilliant. Looking forward to more in the series. This series is amazing, and I HIGHLY recommend it. Andrew Tell did an OUTSTANDING job bringing this story to life. Bear has made it to South Minneha only to find that Laurel has gone to Lone Oak Hospital, 40 miles away.
Bear gains the trust of Arlo’s crew before setting off in search of Laurel. Britt plots her revenge on Bear, Arlo and Laurel. This book answers several questions; what happened to Jim?, how does Britt’s quest for revenge go?, does Bear find Laurel? How are Deb, Liam, & Peter? Here are plenty of perils and bad guys in this episode, but by far the worst is the unrelenting cold. The book is well researched, the story is very believable and the writing is easy to read

Book 3, Great EMP Apocalyptic saga.

Bear has finally found his wife Laurel, and things could not be any better except they need to find Mae thier only child and daughter. So when Spring begins they will go again into this upside down, dangerous world to complete the family. They of course will be travelling with Trent and a loyal pet called Jess. I Love the characters in this story, and how they work together for thier family. Each time i finish 1 book, the next book picks right up and i'm never lost in the story. Excited to be starting book 4.

It was with anticipation that I began reading Dangerous World and the author definitely provided. I think I ended up with frost bite from the terrible conditions Laurel, Bear and so many others faced daily. The pace is perfect, the characters outstanding and the story moves forward with symmetry. It’s an unbeatable part of the series.

Laurel and Bear face more problems.

This series is improving as it continues. I like the characters a lot and the problems they face aren't that far-fetched. I do know I'm not going to Minnesota anytime soon because the weather is adding to the problems they face. Great characters development, enough action to keep the pages turning and a good story. Do read them in order. I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment.

So she let's the infected in and then just leaves and we don't find out what happens to them...
And we're supposed to feel bad for arlo and Jim? Where we also don't get the whole story of what was going on with him...

This book just felt really unsatisfying. I'm not even sure I care enough to read the next ones.

A compelling read

This is the best apocalypse style series I've read in a long time. What I love is the characters and that you find yourself really caring about what happens to them. A well thought out and written series that will definitely prompt me to read others of Grace Hamilton's books.
