We're back on planet Amir with Jared Reach, Liana Craiswell (Madame Osay) and Colonel Bosa. These are the leaders of the American peoples on the planet. The original settlers were the descendants of a colony ship sent by American several centuries in the past. They were to be joined by the USS Boone, another colony ship, but that ship got caught in some kind of time warp and didn't actually reach the planet until 200 years later. The original colony survived by staying together and with the help of a single android they named Brody. He acted as their protector for all those years while new generations grew and died until the present day when the USS Boone contingency arrived.
Unfortunately, most of the colonist aboard the Boone were died in cryo-sleep. The only ones to make it to the planet were most of the military and a Mr. Jared Reach. Reach was supposed to be civil-military liaison between the colonist and the military of the original colonial expedition. But, a Doctor Roman with the help of an advanced AI name Alexa modified Jared and all the other military while they were in cryo-sleep to make it seem that Jared was the military leader although he was no longer in the military. These two also enhanced Jared's physical abilities and mental capacities so that he was something of a super human and quite capable of taking on the dangers the colonist face on the planet.
Those dangers were immediate and very threatening. The fauna of Amir was very deadly, but if that wasn't enough, the planet was also occupied by military members of the Russo-Chinese Pacific Alliance (RUPAC). Jared and Brody along with the rest of the military from the USS Boone were able to root out the majority of the RUPAC soldiers and were systematically securing all their scientific stations on the planet. They now have at least two, maybe three more station to clear out, but they no the RUPAC soldiers will be fighting desperately against them even though they have "liberated" many of the RUPAC soldiers who were found to be most uneducated conscripts.
The last bastion of the RUPAC is station Six and it is underwater. How Jared and the rest of the American forces are going to secure this facility is a great question. It is especially critical since they no a RUPAC Reclamation Team is headed for the planet with a very large contingent of solders to ensure planet Amir stays in their control.
So, this story is about how the American colonist strive to survive and make the planet safe for the long term. They know that the Earth they came from no longer exist as it once was. Things have changed on Earth and they don't have much contact with the home world so it's very important they make their home on Amir for themselves and their future generations.
I think this is then end of this particular series. It was a good series, but was all about the actions on Planet Amir. You'll see how things finally turn out for everyone at the end of this book.
Brody could carry the books if he had too. No, really, he could carry all the books! Fun ending to an interesting storyline. This could go the way SW was originally written, with the droids in every story line, through generations, perhaps exploring and uniting the remaining human colonies.
A satisfying conclusion to the battle for human colonization on the strange and dangerous planet Amir. Good versus evil. Rather free choice versus rigid tyranny. This is a military sci-fi story with highly trained and competent Rangers doing there best to tip the scales toward defeating the tyrannical forces they fled from when leaving Earth. The Rangers arrived on scene a surprising 200 years later than expected after their ship was sabotaged. The colonists they were to prepare to receive crashed on Amir at their original expected date. The descendants barely surviving the deadly ecosystem were also barely surviving battles against the forces they had fled who were using Amir as a horrific science laboratory. Former US Marine Jared Reach brought the Rangers and the fiercely independent colonists together to battle the enemy forces of the planets native wildlife and the human tyrannical forces. The conclusion came with the discovery of a method of communication with the rest of the Galaxy. With that in mind, I felt a letdown by a feeling that the ending came abruptly. The two authors always give good action using their military experience to lend realism to the battle sequences. The science of the advancement in technology and military force multiplying technology is believable in understandable advances of what we have today. In other words the stretch to suspending disbelief sci-fi requires is easy for most readers. Enjoy the 5th book. Pop culture references coming from action movies starting as far back as the 60's will get you grinning in nostalgic reminisce.
RUPAC have a number of stations on Amir designed for specific tasks. Reach and the Osay have captured a few, but some of the others, including an underwater base and a scientific outpost may still be active and potential hazards. Investigating the scientific outpost, they come up with a plan to take the underwater base, where they will face not only RUPAC but also marine life that want them dead! An exciting adventure as Reach is involved in the two missions, with surprises, revelations, action, military manoeuvres, suspense, treachery and even romance play a hand.
This was a great ride. Lots of action and clever uses of tech. The AI interfaces would completely change the face of warfare. Lots of factions all competing for resources and survival on a hostile world. It had it's funny parts with a slightly crazy AI robot dropping movie lines left and right. But the main thrust of this series has been the battle between freedom and central control where people are disposable units. I liked the way the author tied up the loose ends and had a very good ending to the story.
I enjoyed the series, but I'm also glad that it's done. This last book in particular seemed like too much action, and not enough story. I listened to the audio books, and believe it was a terrible mistake to call a main character Alexa. Every podcast I listen to is careful never to say "Alexa" even once, and here's a series that does it hundreds of times. My Echo device was constantly interrupting the story. Had I known beforehand, I would have never started Wayward Galaxy.
This series is fun. I listen to them on Audible as a palette cleanser. The narrator really makes the series. I actually tried to read a Kindle version of one of these and it was just missing something without RC Bray reading to me. I do wish there was more character development and interactions. This series is literally 95% action. But I still like it. I hope there's a book 6. The way #5 ended, it's kinda hard to tell.
As everything starts coming together the Ghost unit still moves ahead to take over and with the Rangers and Osay working together for a great counterpoint to the usual action we get a little bit more progress on how this works out. Still a lot of Brody name drops, which can be a hindrance to the flow, depending on just how much time you spend on working them out.
Great adventure full of actions and story. Reach and the other Rangers need to lock down some of the RUPAC stations to keep the colony safe. The Wolverines, the new Osay unit, make it clear that they will be helping with the security of the colony. Wolverines along with the Rangers, Brody and Reach all go after the RUPAC sent to Amire to take it from the colonist. Great wrap up and ecology also. Look forward to the next book.
You know how sometimes a later book/movie/etc has a big reveal that makes the others make sense. this is that book... in many ways it took to long. but its still good. Its not "great" ... still TOOOOOO MUCH ACTION... no clue at all how they got from one area to another, or somehow a sub or underwhater??? just suddenly they were.... its all a blur... but oh well... as long as brody keeps being brody Ill suffer through it.
This was one of the best series I've ever read, and that is saying a lot! I read a hundred plus books per year. I loved all the characters, especially Brody. I am a veteran and the military aspect of the book is spot on. The authors work well together. It's a lot of story to cram into five books, but I wish there were more!
4.5 stars. For me, a little Brody goes a long way, and some of the Rangers agree. Still, it seemed a bit better moderated than the last book, and the story closes out on a good note here. There was no indication of a connection to the Dr. Roman discovery in KTF Pt.1, so I guess I can safely continue reading that now.
I wish I'd been able to pay better attention to this story because it was a good one. Set in an underwater base; lots of mean, strange things out to get you (same as on land), kind of like Florida! All that and a good fight. The whole AI thing is now pretty intense as well. Loved the ending!
Again, the writing and military aspects are on-point. Relationships are just right, and the dialogue is realistic and at times hilarious. I laughed out loud at one of Brody’s lines in this book.
Fantastic series from two of today's best science fiction authors. You can not skip a single page, continuous action and Jules Verne'esk extrapolations to the very end!!! Very well done gentlemen, this is and always will be my favorite jaunre...
Great series of books. Entertaining and light with great action and really good character development. Maybe think on Amir revisited in a couple generation time jump?
Don't read this unless you finish the prior books. Its full of jargon, and characters that are incomprehensible unless you have the context from books 1 - 4. I tried to read it and I got to chapter 4 and stopped. I haven't read the other stories and I don't intend to. So its a DNF
Some friends become enemies while some enemies become friends. Still clearing out the REDS who want to fight while trying to save conscripted people. Good read.
Absolutely well done with characters you love to love and ones you love to hate. Is this the end of the series? I don't know. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Prepping for the reclamation fleet we end up finding out that the galaxy isn't what it we thought it was. It was a little hard to keep track of events sometimes a little more than the other books.
I liked this book, but I only gave three stars because I felt like I was getting bogged down in the self-talk, exposition, and back story. I expected a different ratio of action to thinking about action, history, and mental wandering.
Sure, I like all the characters and the planet.
Okay, I got a little upset at the very first scene. The Osay was flying near a moon when it wandered into a debris cloud. Space is mostly empty. Something like a destroyed spaceship is not something you accidentally fly into. Unless you're in the first chapter of this book.
I really like the good guys, the AI's, and the settlers. If there are more books I'll read 'em. But this one felt like a slog, so I gave 3 stars instead of 4.
