Tom just wants a quiet life. But destiny has other plans.
Tom Rollins is working as a forest ranger in Northern California. He’s leading a quiet life until the night he finds three armed men chasing a malnourished Mexican, Mateo, through the forest.
Mateo is too scared to say much, but Tom and local police officer Reiko are sure he has been held captive and put to work. They wonder if there is some connection to feared street gang, MS13, who have recently been active in the area. Tom knows that wherever MS13 show up, chaos and bloodshed is sure to follow.
But MS13 aren’t the only problem. There’s also a gruesome killing, suspected cartel activity, and the apathetic attitude of Reiko’s superiors. Soon Tom and Reiko realise they are up against a powerful network and it will take every ounce of their resourcefulness just to survive.
Death has no mercy, and Tom Rollins will show no quarter.
You should not let Tom Rollins live in a place in any forest. No Quarter by paul Heatley is the latest addition to this series about ex soldier Rollins trying to keep a low profile and keep to himself. Well, good luck with that. I really like this character and the troubles that he faces in each book. Heatley has created a great character that like Reacher travels around trying to stay out of trouble. This time he works as a forest ranger in northern California, but the quiet forest and small adjacent town is not a very nice place. Tom encounters people from south of the border in the woods and the state that there in tells him that they are not regular hikers. What is going on and who are the guys shooting at him? Well the book is out on August the 7th then you can have as much fun as I did reading this book. Thanks to Inkubator books and Netgalley for supplying me with this advance copy and Paul Heatley for making this stuff up.
I’ve been on holiday for the last week or so and I’ve read the two latest novels in Paul Heatley’s Tom Rollin’s series, Road Kill followed by this one, No Quarter. They are perfect holiday reading for me and that is not to demean them in any way but I love the mixture of noirish crime and high octane action. Tom Rollins has been working as a Forest Ranger in Northern California for a year and it’s probably the nearest Tom has been to settling down in quite a while. It’s a job he enjoys as he can spend most of his time living in his station, mostly in solitude, looking out for fires and anything else that might need his attention. However this all changes when Tom stumbles across an ill equipped and malnourished Mexican, Mateo, being pursued by armed gunmen. Meanwhile in the small town nearby Reiko, the lone Police Officer, is investigating the arrival of what appears to be a group of MS13 gang bangers into the quiet town and what their arrival could mean. Tom and Reiko soon join forces and discover something sinister is going on in the very forest that Tom patrols. Another great action novel from Heatley, as this series continues to barrel along at a furious pace. Despite the formulaic nature of the books, Heatley creates different crimes and circumstances in each of the novels that manage to keep them fresh. They do also remind me of ‘westerns’ too, as Tom Rollins is the unknown stranger who arrives in town and takes on the ‘baddies’ usually with the assistance of some locals. The series is action packed with lots of bloody violence and are not for the faint hearted, as they also seem to contain a particularly gruesome death and this one is no exception. It’s also good to see that at the end, Heatley sets the wheels in motion for what I can only assume is the next novel in the series.
Paul Heatley's latest book in the Tom Rollins series, "No Quarter," is a fast-paced crime thriller that will keep readers turning the pages until the very end. Inspired by the popular Jack Reacher series, the book follows Rollins as he stumbles upon a crime in a new town, and in this case, it's the illegal trafficking of Mexican immigrants.
Heatley's writing style is refreshingly simple and direct. He doesn't waste time on unnecessary details, and his focus is on telling a good story. The result is a book that is easy to read and moves quickly. The suspense in "No Quarter" is well done, and there are enough twists and turns to keep readers engaged throughout.
That being said, the Tom Rollins series doesn't quite reach the depth and complexity of the Jack Reacher series. While Rollins is an intriguing character, he doesn't have the same level of nuance as Reacher. The same can be said of the plot, which is engaging but not as intricate as the Reacher novels.
Overall, "No Quarter" is an entertaining and well-written crime thriller that fans of the genre will enjoy. While it doesn't quite reach the heights of the Jack Reacher series, Heatley's straightforward style and ability to craft a good story make this book a worthy addition to the Tom Rollins series.
Oh I do love this series, ok I know I have only read two books but I am a HUGE fan! And yes, I can admit I have a book crush on Tom Rollins. As I said last time, he is a man you want in your corner!
This time he has settled for a time, a park ranger, the perfect job for him but things are about to get tainted! What a rollercoaster of action, misdirect, double-crossing, and a small tinge of romance. I loved it! It was perfect to lose a few hours as I head into the forest by Tom’s side. From the start, something isn’t right and it’s not long until the action kicks off. I didn’t realise how far the deception was, but I did guess one of the turncoats but wowzers!
Man, I would sit and tell you how fantastic everything is about this book but I don’t want to ruin it for you. It’s everything I loved in the early books of the Jack Reacher books, yes still on a break (what a broken record). Tom doesn’t get involved unless he has to and someone is shooting at you, well it’s a pretty good reason to get involved.
I am chomping at the bit for the next book in this series!!! Just can’t wait!
Tom is now living in Northern California working as a ranger in the forest. When he meets a man named Mateo he knows that there is a problem. A bigger problem comes when men come thinking that they can take him out after the night he had helped Mateo. Trying to scare him away like others have these will finally figure out that you cannot kill him. The person that is probably surprised the most is Reiko a local police officer. After she helps him take out the MS-13 gang that was in the house she knows what he is capable of. What really gets her though is when he takes out the men that were with them in an elevator she had never seen anything like it before, she had never seen anyone like Tom before either. In the end, she knew he would leave and probably never see him again. was a good book in this series and one that was a little different. I liked this one very much so much going on and will keep anyone who reads it entertained until the last paged. Good characters as well. I received this book from Netgalley.com
A good thriller that has Rollins taking life as a forest ranger helping tourists and hiking groups who get lost find their way to safety as well as keeping a watch out for fire. Observing a person fleeing through his region of forest chased by armed men motivates Rollins to help this person and from this point events take a turn for the worst. After handing the flight person over to the local police he in turn is murdered and butchered by face immigrations officers who came to the station to collect him. Follow up events lead to a gun battle with cartel gunmen resulting in many police deaths only lessened by Rollins and the police officer in charge. Enquiries uncovered a drug manufacturing system run by a local family assisted by corrupt Forest Rangers and mercenaries take’s Rollins and the police officer helping using all their skills to bring the operations down.
This book finds Tom as a forest ranger in California. He's been there almost a year- a record amount of time for him. A Jack Widow/Jack Reacher ex-military type comes across quite a few people in the forest needing his help. The last one leading to a drug cartel with a local tie in and some corrupt fellow forest rangers (which seemed obvious to me).
His fighting skills are a bit unbelieveable- attacking mercenaries with his hands zip-tied behind his back but still calculating a way to take them down. He steps in to help Reiko the local cop who was kind of banished to Oak Hills by the nasty Chief of Police in Saxton.
They fight MS-13, local thugs, corrupt forest rangers, an incompetent Chief of Police and do get to the truth.
This is the best I read in this Tom Rollins series. He is not just some ex-specops guy wandering across US and jumping into any situation he can find where somebody needs some help (mainly trafficking with girls was involved) but he is finally allocated in some place (small town) with a regular job and earning his salary . There was just a moment when he is taken to his place by a work colleague and, getting a situation there, he never realized (small spoiler here) the only way bad guys could have found him was through that colleague (and Tom is usually aware of that details to deal with all bad guys).
probably a 4.25 to 4.5, a very enjoyable read. Tom is in BFE california, Oak Hills? and is working as a forest ranger. There is a portion of the forest he does not venture into and as it turns out there is an ex-con, Bull who is growing poppies/making heroin. Tom works with the local officer Reiko Miller to wipe out the bad guys, which include some MS-13 characters and others.
Thee were times that I couldn't sleep at night and begin reading. Though I would slowly get sleepy, I couldn't put the story down and go to sleep. Just one more page I would say to myself, which ended up being one more chapter ! Hope to read more stories about Tom Rollins.
A really good read, quite a surprise as I have dropped into this series late. Loved the action, very authentic and fast moving. The usual thing happened, had to stop at around 2am to get some sleep. Highly recommend this book to anyone who likes fast moving action. I certainly like the hero!
It's an ok book and one I would recommend others to read One aspect of the whole series I am impressed/relieved about, is that the hero does not get beaten to a pulp and yet still comes out on top. Too many authors make their heros super human, thankfully this is not the case jere
This is Jack Reached without all that walking. Satisfying action including some romance with the heroine. Heroin poppies in the National Forest. I'll never go hiking alone again.
Another great read in the Tom Rollins series. I have read all of the books in order and have never been disappointed. Lots of action and of course a number of twists and turns. A big thank you to the author and from me a well deserved 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Tom Rollins is a bit more of a Badass than the average anti-Hero. Mr Heatley builds characters and circumstances that are real, credible, and exciting. I hope Book #7 follows shortly !
Continuous, realistic storyline, takes you from point A to B without psych babble filler. Hope there is another book soon. One of the most enjoyable and mental satisfying series I've read, and I read over 250 books a year. Thank you Paul
Enjoyed the writing. Tom Rollins seemed real enough…noble enough. The badass bad guys were badass enough. Altogether…a very entertaining adventure. Looking forward to book 7. Happy writing!
Reading a Tom Rollins story is like watching a building doomed to demolition with C 4 and a long fuse. You know it is going to blow up, but you are not sure when the Big Bang is coming. No Quarter in a fun read.
Once again Tom ends up where trouble is close at hand. He doesn’t hesitate but protects those who can’t protect themselves. Now an old friend needs help so Tom is off to help in next book.
There aren't enough words to describe how much enjoyment in getting on reading this series, all i can say is: I will start book 7 oh in about a minutes time. Thank you Mr Heatley you are brilliant 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
It is nice to see a little bit of a change in pace. To have the protagonist remain in one place for longer than a few weeks. Changes the dynamic with the supporting characters. And, of course, good ol' treachery.
It seemed that perhaps Tom had found some peace being a forest ranger for a year but he came across a poppy field in full bloom which involved some cartel baddies and local scum who were growing heroin in a small town for mass distribution. Peace was disrupted. Now, Tom has moved on to the next adventure.
Another excellent book in this series. Tom Rollins is a great character, tough but realistic, and very resourceful. Lots of action to keep you reading and many twists and turns along the way.
