Rate this book
A reckless Victorian heiress sets her sights on a dashing ex-naval lieutenant, determined to win his heart as the two of them embark on a quest to solve a decades-old mystery in USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews’s sequel to her critically acclaimed novels The Work of Art and Gentleman Jim.

Lieutenant Charles Heywood has had his fill of adventure. Battle-weary and disillusioned, he returns to England, resolved to settle down to a quiet, uneventful life on an estate of his own. But arranging to purchase the property he desires is more difficult than Charles ever imagined. The place is mired in secrets, some of which may prove deadly. If he’s going to unravel them, he’ll need the assistance of someone as daring as he is.

At only twenty, Lady Katherine Beresford has already earned a scandalous reputation. As skilled with pistols as she is on horseback, she’s never met an obstacle she can’t surmount—or a man she can’t win. That is, until she encounters the infuriatingly somber Lieutenant Heywood. But Kate refuses to be deterred by the raven-haired soldier’s strong, silent facade. After all, faint heart never won handsome gentleman.

From the wilds of rural Somersetshire to the glittering ballrooms of early-Victorian London, Charles and Kate embark on a cross-country quest to solve a decades’ old mystery. Will the greatest danger be to their hearts—or to their lives?

Philly and Arthur's dashing son, Charles! Maggie and St. Clare's hellion daughter, Kate! The Work of Art meets Gentleman Jim in Return to Satterthwaite Court, coming in April 2023. You can expect to see all your old faves (some a bit older and grayer than others) as their children meet, quarrel, and fall in love in my newest Victorian romance, set in 1843. Longer author note to come!

Updated author note:

The Somerset Stories series is a series that was never supposed to exist. The Work of Art and Gentleman Jim were both originally written as standalones. It’s why they’re bigger, denser, and more complicated in terms of plotting and characterization. The next two books (Return to Satterthwaite Court and Appointment in Bath) were written entirely as fan service—as a way of saying thank you to the readers who supported me during the year after losing my dad.

These newer, ‘second-generation’ stories about the Heywood and Beresford children are shorter, sweeter, and simpler than my other novels. They exist purely as a sort of reunion for readers who loved the first two stories and want to revisit the history of those earlier characters as much as they want to enjoy a romance between new ones. That’s not to say that you won’t enjoy them if you haven’t read the first books, but I expect that you’re going to enjoy them a lot more if you have!

“Do you love me?”
“Love you? I want to marry you, Kate. To settle down on a great rambling farm somewhere in Somersetshire with you and our horses, our dogs, and even—Lord save me—your cats. I dearly hope you want that too. That you want me.”

Good heavens- I officially announce my very first favorite book in March. Return to Satterthwaite Court. Woo-hoo🥳🥳

I could not even describe how I'm feeling right now after finishing this book. To say that I'm happy would be an understatement of the year and it's not even including that the fact this book is my very first arc that I read. I'm happy, deliriously happy🥲

God- I couldn't imagine that I'll be facing romance in a mix of a bit cozy mystery in the middle. It's very much a lovely adventurous romance and the fact that the time background setting is in the Victorian Era makes it more exhilarating.

The plot and the story was awesome. It was very much refreshing since considering the background setting, we have the fmc pursuing the mmc. We have a strong and fearless female main character, in Victorian Era, that not only pursued the gentleman but also brazenly admit that she was the on who chose him. If that's not something that you never see in a historical romance, I'm not sure what is. The flow was pleasant too, nothing was dragging or too fast and I enjoyed this book immensely.

The characters.. perfection. Pure perfection. Flawless too. God, Kate, Lady Katherine Beresford is my role model. Seriously, she was just purely amazing and fantastic, I just admit that I'm in love with her. I just never doubt Mimi's character development, she has the most flawless character development ever in every books that I read. Lieutenant Charles Heywood was also perfect, I really like how he perfectly matched with Kate, and my God he was just this handsomely confident man and hot. He was just hot. I won't spoil any of them in this review, but once this book released you need to pick this up!

I love to see the crumbs of Arthur Philly and John Maggie. The fact that it's both of their son and daughter was enough to make me squeal when I first started reading this book.

Do you want know how I felt and what was my state while I was reading this? I was very much hooked, thrilled, and excited throughout reading this. I never did feel bored, not even a second this book felt tedious or flat. I'm just so thrilled and excited and happy. And I was basically sitting on the edge of my sit when I read this book due to how excited I was.

I love it. I just love it. I can't believe that the first arc of mine would be my favorite book too (and I'm adding Charles into my list of book boyfriend) cause the 2nd book was kind of a let-down, but this book made it up for me. It's just an exciting and delightful easy comfort read. I recommend this to everyone.

5 stars. Full 5 stars. Gah! I love it so much! This book was such a pure bliss!😩😭💖

Enormous thanks to Mimi Matthews, her publisher, and netgalley for providing the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review🫶🏻

Also thank you for the little sneak peek for the next book in this series 😭🫶🏻

I remember once I was chatting with friends at a party and a girl I barely knew mentioned her “future boyfriend”. She was very matter-of-fact about it too. I don’t even know if they ended up together or not, but I remember that I was quite shocked, even if amazed by her confidence. You know who that girl was? She was a real life version of Lady Katherine Beresford.

I don’t think I have read a heroine like that before. Not even in a contemporary, let alone in a historical romance. She saw the man once on the street, decided that she wanted him and proceeded to stalk pursue him.

I’m not sure how I feel about it. I know I would never have the guts to chase after a guy with such relentlessness. I’m not sure if I would feel comfortable being chased like that either, but to each their own I guess.

I’m torn because it was truly a delight to meet Kate’s and (especially) Charles’s parents and siblings and I will definitely continue with the series. I also still adored the writing and I devoured this book, but… I didn’t love the story. There was way too much of Kate and not nearly enough of Charles. I don’t mind if the girl falls first but Kate was overbearing and presumptuous (even by today’s standards) and my overall impression was that he just didn’t stand a chance against her.

HAPPIEST OF RELEASE DAYS!

Huge thanks to Mimi Matthews and Rel Mollet for approving me for the street team for Return to Satterthwaite Court, an honor I took very seriously! This title will be out April 11th.

I completely loved this closed-door historical romance. It had everything - a fierce and progressive heroine, a hero fresh from naval combat who isn't daunted by her, and tons of animals. Much like Austen two centuries before her, Mimi Matthews can shape a longing glance or a whisper of a touch against a sleeve into the very pinnacle of romance for readers.

The balance of character- and plot-driven story in this book was fantastic; I like the Somerset "universe" Mimi Matthews has created, resulting in the parents of both leads being familiar from earlier books! We love a tie-in! Given the family legacies involved, there is some mystery and intrigue, and even scheming afoot in this book, all in addition to some really stellar characters. The writing is fantastic and shows Mimi's signature clearly, with historical accuracies and research deftly woven into the fabric of the story. Some very modern ideas were cleverly inserted, too, like vegetarianism. So unique for a book in this genre.

I very much enjoyed Kate, who reminded me of the one in the latest season of Bridgerton; she's feisty and can shoot well. But this Kate is also an animal lover, someone who respects service workers, and a staunch defender; the way she took Charles' shy sister Hannah under her boisterous wing felt very real to life. Charles himself is an equally appealing character; he sticks to his principles even when it could ruin him, and is always saving and caring for animals. Moreover, he is content to let Kate take the reins in decisions, conversations, and most things, without feeling the least bit emasculated. That's husband material, Kate.

All of the juicy ingredients of a great historical romance were skillfully included, too. If you love a good waltz, it's here, as well as a very awkward meet-cute, and close proximity resulting from danger. Plus, misunderstandings don't last very long, something I was hugely grateful for.

This is my 14th book of Mimi Matthews', and Kate might be my favorite protagonist yet. Everything rounds out to five whole-hearted stars to this book. Pre-orders are already available, and look for more coverage on my twitter and instagram.

Everything I have read by Mimi Matthews has charmed me to the bone. Her characters, plots, humor, romance, and historical details are dazzling.

It's hard to top that pinnacle of perfection that I have placed her upon. Yet, the description of Return to Satterthwaite Court gave me a hint that she was upping her game. Two of the children of her previous Regency-era couples from Gentleman Jim and A Work of Art would meet by chance in Victorian-era London. Lady Katherine Beresford (Kate) and Lieutenant Charles Heywood's "meet cute" is hilarious and endearing, setting the tone, style, and quality of the story from the get go.

Matthews has created a very progressive heroine who knows what she wants and passionately pursues Lt. Heywood despite social decorum and against all odds; he wants none of it. That is the hook of the story that draws the reader in and keeps them turning pages, along with a family mystery that they join forces to uncover.

In her usual brilliant narrative style we experience the slow-burn romance of Kate and Charles, the divergent personalities in the two families, their country estates, and of course the many dogs, cats, and horses that characteristically populate Matthews' novels. I would be remiss if I did not mention the glorious descriptions of the clothing as well.

What places this story above Matthews' other bestselling novels is the unique moxie of its heroine, the spikey banter between its principle characters, and the brilliant craftsmanship of combining families from two pervious stand-alone novels and uniting them by chance, and love, into a series. Not only is it clever, it is a marketing boon. I have not seen this done before and I am certain that many historical romance authors will take heed and rinse and repeat with alacrity. If so, dear reader, we are the happy winners.

Wow. Just wow! Those who enjoy raillery and romance get ready to spar & swoon with Kate & Charles!

I was fortunate to receive an advanced reading copy from the publisher. Return to Satterthwaite Court releases on April 11, 2023.

❛Nearly thirty years later, Arthur Heywood was still deeply in love with his wife, and she with him. It was the sort of love that, as a young man, Charles had aspired to one day have with his own bride.❜

⊹ song: beautiful stranger by laufey.

one of my new favorite books for sure. I read it in less than twenty-four hours and I knew from the start it was either going to be four or five stars. my expectations were definitely high and it's all because it's about arthur and philly's son aka my favorite couple aka my biological parents... anyway, I loved the relationship between kate and charles so much. I loved how she pursued him despite him pushing her away. ও that's it. that's all I have to say.

thank you to netgalley and mimi matthews for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for my honest review. <3

Another great romance from Mimi Matthews. Even though I thought the storyline was a little predictable, the characters were so endearing that I was enchanted from start to finish. The dialogue and the tension between Charles and Kate was perfectly executed. And I love that she made Kate the pursuer in the scenario, which is not usually my preference. The author's note at the end was a treat as well. I always love reading about where the author's get their inspiration. I'm really enjoying this series, and look forward to Ivo and Meg's story.

I was lucky to receive an ARC from the author/publisher, and absolutely loved it, as I knew I would.

Having read the prior books in this series, I was very interested in reading this story between the son of one couple and the daughter of the other, and in seeing the family dynamics within each family and then the families mingling. It was absolutely delightful.

Charles and Katherine meet unconventionally on the street over a mutt of a dog. Katherine is immediately intrigued by Charles and when she discovers who he is, manages to convince one of her brothers to accompany her to his house.

Mimi Matthews is an amazing writer, skilled in language and character development, and I loved reading along as Katherine and Charles became friends and then fell in love.

Highly recommend and can't wait for the next one!

I received a copy from the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

Dizzying delights!

The opening scene of Lieutenant Charles Heywood newly off his ship at the London docks chasing a mongrel dog to see it doesn’t come to harm, only to try to disentangle it from around a lady’s skirts is a hoot. As is when he proclaims it to be a valuable dog, “A rare breed. One of only of his kind.” With a nod to Georgette Heyer’s Frederica, Matthews latest novel is off to a fine start and the pace never stops.
We have mystery, an historical happening that’s influencing today’s participants, a feisty yet charming heiress, and a villain who’s sleazed his way into society with all the finesse of a snake charmer.
I was caught off guard by the closing scenes when his mother and sister turned out to be as nasty as Mr. Elias Catmull.
Kate, daughter of the Earl of Allendale, can’t help but fall headlong into scrapes. She’s passionate and intelligent. She’s had to weather three brothers, which means fighting for what she wants, and challenging everyone who wants to hedge her in—even though she’s mortified after she’s done so.
Of course she fixed her attention on Charles, and he? Well it takes a while for him to truly appreciate Kate. The there’s anothing thing. He’s resigned his commission and the reason for doing so hangs heavily.
Another great Sommerset tale from Matthews with more to come from this corner of England! Yes!!

A Victory Editing ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.

Such a great addition to the series, but for me its highest value lies in how it is everything you could want in a second generation story with plenty of presence of the characters one should already love, to then fully appreciate the splendid opposites attract/heroine in pursuit fun with our new couple. So, I say this with love: don’t be a self-sabotaging chaos reader by not reading the first two books before this one. I’m a recovering one myself, and it simply will not do here.

Charles is back from the Navy, disillusioned and unmoored, and of course Philly’s son would find himself in a predicament because of a mongrel. And speaking of mothers, Maggie has been paying her dues with impetuous wild child Kate. Guess knowing what you want runs in the family. Who can blame a lady for swooning when an impressive Christopher Plummer Navy officer pulls out his terse tone? He basically did the equivalent of Von Trapp whistling and Kate was like “Command this unbiddable hoyden, lieutenant. Oh, he’s mine and doesn’t know it yet.” *cue Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero”* I already envisioned her esteemed former hellion mother as Vivien Leigh, and here Kate goes full blue-eyed Scarlet O’Hara going after her stoic, dark-haired Ashley. And, ah, it was such good fun seeing the youngest and only Beresford daughter setting her sights on the Heywoods’ only son, resulting in one of my favorites: the aggravated grump.

I have to say though, for me this was not as epic and consuming and sweeping a soul mates romance as Gentleman Jim (and I do tell myself they can’t all be). Though Charles and Kate are very complementary, I did find myself wishing they had found some motivation/long-term joint adventure beyond finding each other and the pretty straight-forward mild peril mystery that brought them together. Also, when the pursuer becomes the pursued I like some form of resistance or obstacle to keep the tension, but here it felt more of a relinquishing to catch an easy target. I could also mention I would’ve liked a bit more lighthearted moments between them, but Kate would jut out that stubborn chin and proclaim “He may be a stiff, but he’s my heroic stiff.”

This was very full circle in a lot of ways with many bows tied very nicely and others set up for tying. Lots of points for getting to see older Nicholas and Maggie still making up for that ten year forced separation, and Allendale (formerly St Clare) as the fierce protective father, okaaayy *still fanning vigorously*. Very much worth a read, and I’m invested for all the Beresford generations HEAs in perpetuity.

After devouring the previous book, I was ravenous for this one, so thank you to Netgalley for a chance to read this ARC.

”Who says a lady must allow herself to be won? You didn't raise me to be anyone's prize.”

Mimi Matthews books are like a cup of hot cocoa on a cold rainy day - comforting and sweet.

In the beginning of 2023 i promised myself i was going to try and read out of my comfort zone a lot more thus resulting in me finding Mimi Matthews. Yet, i never thought i’d fall head over heels for her dreamy writing, strong-willed characters and marvelous stories.

As an avid mystery-thriller reader, i value the adventure and mystery aspects the author chooses to add to her stories in addiction to the swoony romance, which has everything a reader of the genre could want: a gorgeous and independent heroine with a fiery spirit and a careworn hero who just returned from exotic locales, not exactly fitting society’s mold.

Return to Satterthwaite Court, although not my favorite book from the on-going series, made me happily sigh in a state of reader-bliss from the first word. The only reason i’ve given this novel four stars instead of five is that i prefer the first two books in the series. This one in particular felt a bit rushed at times and the romance development felt a bit lacking compared to its prequels.

Nevertheless, i’m already counting down the days for the next book.

I've loved all of Mimi Matthews' books so far (besides A modest independence).
She's one of my favorite authors ever.

BUT.
Sadly I didn't feel the connection with the characters I usually feel in MM's books.

I love strong female MCs in hr but it took me very long to like Kate's boldness and stubborness.
Mimi Matthews' male MCs often seem closed off but Charles was more unapproachable then her other MMCs for me. Suddenly he was attracted and enamored by Kate, but it seemed out of nowhere to me.

I didn't feel the growing of a connection between the MCs, I didn't feel any real chemistry or longing, differently from many other books by Mimi Matthews.

I love her other books but this was a nice read, but sadly not more for me.
3 stars.

*Happy Sigh*

Oh my heart, I loved this one!!! I hadn't read any books by Mimi Matthews until a few months ago. I've watched her since she started publishing and my friends would read and rave about her writing and stories and characters. I even had several of her books. But the old adage of, So Many Books So Little Time, is very true! I saw several of her books available in audio format on a new platform I was trying and I instantly chose those to listen to! And let me tell you I'm HOOKED!!! The other adage of, Why Did I Wait So Long To Read These?, was going through my mind as well! I'm going to tell you that if you're like me and haven't read any of her books yet, do yourself the biggest favor and GO READ/LISTEN TO THEM NOW!!!

This is the third book in the Somerset Stories and could be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading them in order. The audiobooks for these weren't available on the platform I was trying but I had the digital book already and then discovered there was a huge sale on the audiobook since I already had the digital. Ummm, yeah, I bought them quickly and listened to them any chance I got. Life was super busy but I devoured these in between everything happening. Work of Art and Gentleman Jim are the first two books. They're fabulous, if you can't tell from my gushing!!! And then I jumped at the chance to read an early copy of this third book! Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!

The main characters, Charles and Kate are the children from the main couples in the first two books. And I loved seeing all of those favorite characters again! They're so much fun and being able to see their children grown up and having their own adventures, and seeing similarities to their parents' personalities... The BEST!!!!

The initial meeting of Charles and Kate over a mongrel pup on the streets to her discovering who he is and pursing him. I loved her finagling with her brother to go visit Charles. Oh my heavens, Kate is just absolutely delightful! I loved her spunky personality and her happiness at being who she was and enjoying learning and being true to herself!

Charles was a little slower to convince but Kate did a great job of showing him of her interest and not letting anything stop her from helping him in trying to solve a great mystery. It is all so delicious! The mystery, the secrets, the danger, the wit and banter, the familial aspects, the flirting and courting, the friendship and the sweet romance! Excuse me while I go read this one again! (Yes, you will want to dive back in again right away, fair warning!!!)

Content: Clean. There is some mild language, mild moments of peril. Sweet and Swoony romance but nothing more than kisses and some mild innuendos.

I received a copy from the author and publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I Adore this book! It's full of romance and intrigue. The plot line flowed beautifully and I enjoyed the characters. I was immersed in it from start to finish. I'd happily read anything written by this author.

A strong heroine that knows what she wants and goes after it. Confident and Handsome Hero that cares for animals and perfectly matched Kate. Their interactions were great and goodness is he swoony!! Love the chocolate scene. The way their love blossomed was truly amazing. I enjoyed meeting Charles's shy and sweet sister Hannah.

I was very happy to see the characters from the previous two books and uniting the families into a series. Delightfully written! Sweet/closed-door romance. Absolutely a five-star read!

Huge thanks to the author Mimi Matthews and Rel Mollet for the eARC, A positive review was not required but happily given.

August 2025: Perfect, as always. Jack’s book comes out tomorrow, so I’m revisiting the siblings’ books.

August 2024: Realizing that this book pulls the families for the first two together is still a delightful moment.

March 2023: It takes some really masterful plotting to weave the characters from two books together while also incorporating a time jump. Mimi Matthews does it with incredibly satisfying results in this third installment of her Somerset Stories series, Return to Satterthwaithe Court. Of course, one could read this as a standalone and be swept away by the story of Katherine Beresford and Charles Heywood, but anyone who knows the first two books will be delightfully entertained by seeing many beloved characters again as the second generation takes on the main roles. Many will be happy to see dogs, cats, and horses woven into the story, as you'd expect from Mimi Matthews.

The book starts with a delightful scene in which Charles Heywood chases a stray dog that is apt to be hurt in traffic and meets Lady Katherine Beresford when the dog nips her. Charles' parents are from book 1 in the series and his mother's dogs feature prominently in that story, so it's no surprise that Charles is an animal lover. Katherine is the daughter of the spirited (and sometimes outrageous) couple from the second book and she's as strong willed and assertive as they were. As their relationship develops, we get to meet all the Heywood and Beresford siblings, which sets the stage for more books in the series (the question lurking in my mind is whether Ivo or James is next). Along with the romantic plot, there's a conflict around the property where Charles' mother grew up. It turns out that there is another thread connecting the families and it relates to that property, Satterthwaite Court. We also get some interesting insight into British imperialism though Charles' recollections of being in the Navy.

This was a completely joy to read and I'm certain I'll be revisiting it time and again in the future. All of Mimi Matthews' books are like comfort food to me, but this one is especially wonderful because of how it brought the characters together.

Satterthwaite Court is truly a return to a favorite story world, now fully in the Victorian era, with a new generation stirring up adventure. It matches the adult children of beloved characters in a heart-stirring romance that unearths the past and thematically explores honor and commitment.

From the destined meet-cute involving a scrappy dog (appropriately so for the son of Philly from The Work of Art), Charles Heywood and Kate Beresford have a certain magnetic connection. It's delightful seeing Charles's world shaken by the prospect of an assertive, attractive female. His honorable nature is adorable and makes him appear almost grumpy, but in truth he is just reserved and careful with expressing himself. And, Kate holds her own as a forward-thinking woman who has a spark of adventure making her more suited to her country life than the high society of London. I enjoyed seeing her wonderfully comfortable with her family (her brothers are endearing) and how her mother has passed on certain daring skills.

The whole story has nods to the previous two books, so I highly recommend reading Gentleman Jim and The Work of Art first to appreciate the entire story world.

Thank you to the publisher for providing an early review copy. This is my honest review -- and I look forward to purchasing a copy for my shelves!

Victorian romance-mystery lovers will fall headlong into Mimi Matthews' latest, book 3 in the Somerset Stories series, which can be happily read as a standalone, but makes you want to read the first two ASAP.

I loved the character of spirited Lady Katherine Beresford, who pursues the handsome Lieutenant Charles Heywood after they meet on a busy street where Charles is trying to save a dog. When he finally rescues it, the dog bites Lady Kate. As an animal lover, she is not bothered by the nip but is immediately taken with Charles, who finds her arrestingly beautiful, in turn, yet guards his heart.

Kate's first coming out season left her with no palatable matches, in part because potential suitors found her too lively. Charles finds her thus too, when she takes the initiative to visit his parents' house unannounced with her brother. But Kate knows her own mind and won't give up, and also turns out to be a perfect partner as she helps Charles attack a mystery threatening his family.

A lovely romance ensues, making readers swoon as the couple grows closer. The mystery grips, as well, adding intrigue to the already compelling tale.

Lushly written, gracefully realized, Return to Satterthwaite Court won my heart from the start. If you love hist fic romances, you will be enchanted. And what about that gorgeous cover?

I'm not familiar with the particulars of the difficulties in the paths to happiness in the earlier "Somerset Stories", but I jumped at a chance to read this Mimi Matthews book, as I knew I'd fall for her protagonists and enjoy their road to happiness together.

Both this, and essentially its companion story, "Appointment in Bath", occur over the same few weeks, and are told from two different protagonists' points of view:
-"Appointment in Bath": Meg Burton-Smythe and Ivo Beresford
-"Return to Satterthwaite Court": Kate Beresford and Charles Heywood

Charles Heywood has resigned his naval commission, and is headed back home when he saves a muddy puppy from getting run over, and a beautiful young woman, Kate Beresford, is intrigued that he made such an effort to protect a dog. Kate wants to get to know him better, as he is nothing like all the men whom she's met during her first Season; she finds the possible suitors she's met to be tedious or odious.

Digging a little, she finds out who the stranger is, and with her family's help, pulls him and his family into their orbit. Sparks fly, of course, as Kate is no shrinking violet, and is not content to sit demurely and quietly when there is a man she wants to get to know better. She also assists him in getting closer to uncovering a secret in his family, and eventually ensures her future happiness with him.

I liked how Mimi Matthews made Charles, though seemingly stuffy, a sensitive, kind person who could not stomach injustice, while Kate is all forthrightness and kindness. I also liked just how much in love their respective parents still were.

I look forward to the next entry in this series.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Perfectly Proper Press for this ARC in exchange for my review.

I rarely read Historical Romance these days but Mimi Matthews is one author whose books I still love reading. I’m always assured of a story that is beautifully written, wonderfully romantic, well-researched, with characters that capture your heart.

Some reviewers have commented on the shorter page count in this book and Ms. Matthews does explain the reasons for this in her author’s note on Goodreads.

Return to Satterthwaite Court can be read and enjoyed as a standalone but I would recommend reading The Work of Art and Gentleman Jim first because, not only are they fabulous books in their own right, but I believe it would provide a better understanding of the actions and motivations of various characters in this book.

I was delighted to discover that the hero and heroine of this book are the children of her beloved characters from the two previous books. Charles is Philly and Arthur’s son - The Work of Art and Kate is Maggie and John’s daughter - Gentleman Jim

Charles is a man who loves his family deeply but, when he reflects on his actions eight years ago, he realises how selfish he had been. He’d caused both his parents and his younger sister, Hannah, so much anguish over the years and was determined to make amends. His reasons for resigning his commission also reveal him to be a man of principle, noble, heroic and compassionate. He’s also protective of his younger sister and, to quote Kate…

It didn’t hurt that he was dashingly handsome. Or that his deep, commanding voice had sent a delicious tremor down her spine.

I do love a strong heroine and Kate is all that and more.

She was made for the storm. For braving the mad currents of life, not sheltering in the shallows.

She’s beautiful but also intelligent, bold, outspoken, and always seems to be involved in one scandal or another. Such attributes are totally at odds with the demure, biddable wives sought by society gentlemen and, after her first season, she’s still unmarried. She longs to meet a man who appreciates her intelligence, challenges her and stimulates her mind.

After their unconventional first meeting I was anticipating an exhilarating journey to their Happy Ever After and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved the role reversal with a very determined Kate chasing a reluctant Charles because it created a delightful mix of lively exchanges, delicious sexual tension snd heated kisses.

And clenching her fingers in the fabric of his waistcoat, she pulled him down to her and brazenly pressed her lips to his.

The secondary characters all add depth to the story. I was delighted to see both sets of parents still very much in love after all that had happened in the past.

Kate’s brothers Ivo and Jack had me smiling at their antics and I was intrigued by the obvious undercurrent between the rather formidable James Beresford and Charles’s shy sister, Hannah. There also seems to be trouble brewing because Ivo appears to be courting the daughter of the Beresford’s sworn enemy!

The mystery surrounding the anonymous letter Charles receives kept me intrigued until the revelation of long-hidden family secrets. I was delighted to see all the villains who were involved suitably dealt with.

There’s a charming Epilogue with a surprise that ties everything up nicely.

A delightful addition to the series and now I’m looking forward to reading the next two books.

THE STORY - Return to Satterthwaite Court is the story of Charles and Kate who couldn’t be more opposite in characters and yet more compatible (both are children of the couples from the first two books of Somerset Stories, so if you’ve read all books, you’ll be happy to see the characters once). Kate is a little reckless, she doesn't seem to mind a tiny bit of scandal in her life and nothing will stop her when she sets her mind on something. Charles had his fill of adventure, he returns to England to settle down and live a calm and uneventful life, or so is his plan... until Kate shows up in his life.

REVIEW - I’ll never get over how beautiful Mimi Matthews’s books are. I always feel desperate for more when I finish them. The characters are charming, the historical details are so on point, the vibe of it all is extra comforting, really, I can’t ask for a better reading experience.

In this book, you get a grumpy and yet ready to save the world MMC. A strong-willed, self-determined FMC always ready for adventure. And when they get together, it’s just the best! Oh, seriously... writing this review makes me want to go back to that book right now, I fell so hard for these characters. Their first meetup was quite funny and how Kate could see right through Charles upon that meeting was just the best. I love how she decides to go for what she wants no matter what people might think and no matter the way things are in her time. Charles starting to open up and show his feelings has to be my favourite thing ever. Don’t get me started on the beautiful families these characters have. I loved every single character with my whole heart. Such different families but each perfect in their own way.

P.S. I made the mistake of reading the preview of the next book because I NEEDED to know if it was about Kate's brothers and, if so, I needed to know which one. And now.... I have no idea how I’ll wait until the next book comes out. I’M HOOKED with only one chapter. Help me.

Thanks to the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

Y'all! I could not wait to get my greedy hands on this book! I loved Gentleman Jim and The Work of Art by Ms. Matthews. So, when I found out she was doing a story about their children, I about jumped to the moon. Let's start off by saying that I loved the characters! They were so well developed and wonderful that I wanted to live in that era and be Kate's best friend. She was a young lady who knew what she wanted, and she wanted Lieutenant Charles Heywood. It was really refreshing to see a lady pursue a gentleman in that era. Charles was a man who was tired of adventure and wanted to come home to the country and be at his leisure. The story had humor, mystery, some suspense as well as Ms. Matthews wonderful swoon worthy romance. Let me finish by saying that I loved the fact that we were able to visit with the characters from the previous books and get caught up with their lives. I can't wait for the next installment with the siblings. The author is really a master at writing, and I highly recommend this book.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher/author, and this is my honest opinion.

I love that this book combined the best of both world’s from the previous books!! (You don’t HAVE to read them first, but highly recommend because it brought about even more feels). I loved seeing the previous couples and how things are fairing now.

But onto the main couple here, Charles and Kate!! I LOVED THEM. I love that Kate was the initial pursuer. I didn’t know how I’d feel about this switch up and I thought the execution was great. It was riveting to see her take those initial steps to show Charles she’s interested and also allowing him to do the same for her. There was a sweet balance and give and take between them. Not to mention all of those little moments that really start to add up and having me chanting KISS HER as the slow burn takes hold. And I’m sorry, SWEETHEART? Melt my soul. Oh my gosh, I love well placed endearments. Flawless.

I enjoyed the larger plot too. I like that Mimi Matthew’s books often have a dash of suspense to them that adds a great edge to the third act. It’s written so well that it feels natural to the story and has you flipping pages even faster to get to the conclusion.

No lie, I have turned completely into a Mimi Matthews fan girl and I am loving this journey for me. READ HER BOOKS.

Overall audience notes:
- Regency Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: small dog bite, gun violence

Work of Art has long been one of my favorite Mimi Matthews books, and what do we want more than stories of Arthur and Philly's kids - combined with St. Clair and Maggie's kids from Gentleman Jim? You can't go wrong with a recipe like that. This book is everything you'd hope for in a cross between those two very different families. It was fun to see the characters as middle aged parents with their unique personalities and the kinds of children those unions produced. I especially loved Kitty's brothers and look forward to hearing more of their stories.
Kitty and Charles weren't my favorite of Matthews' MCs. I didn't personally find either of them as compelling as, say, Jasper or Helena, but I see that other readers did. Kitty especially felt pretty fictional for the era, but you might enjoy reading about Regency women who take charge of their situations and futures.
I enjoy Matthews ' style, though, and have never disliked time spent in one of her books.

I read a copy provided by the author in exchange for a review and am honored to share my honest thoughts.

Mimi Matthews returns us to Somersetshire but embarks us on a new journey featuring Lieutenant Charles Heywood and Lady Katherine Beresford.

I must admit, knowing these two were kids of previous book characters had me reaching for the book. The fact that it's a Mimi Matthews book made it a no-brainer to add to my TBR pile.

Lady Katherine is daring and goes after what she wants. I can appreciate that in the heroine because it makes her unique and gives the reader some entertaining moments. :)

Lt Heywood is definitely a hero I can cheer for. His ideals and the guts to stand firm in them had me cheering and agreeing with Kate's initial assessment, he's a true hero.

There's also a few people in the novel that I loved to hate and I may have crowed with delight when their plans got foiled...but maybe that's a spoiler. If so, SORRY!!!

Fans of Mimi Matthews will enjoy this installment and meeting Kate's brothers. Dare I hope they get books in the future?

“She knew now that she could never spend her days stitching silently in a drawing room, content to be admired by some respectful adoring spouse. She was made for the storm. For braving the mad currents of life, not sheltering in the shallows.”

Lady Katherine Beresford is beautiful, bold, fearless, and impetuous. She’s definitely her mother’s daughter. After an unsuccessful season, Kate is completely bored with men until she meets a handsome man who rescues a scraggly puppy in the muddy streets of London. Not one to worry about social conventions, she finds out who he is and immediately begins to pursue him.

Charles Heywood is on his way home after having resigned from the Navy. His swashbuckling days are over and all he wants now is to settle down to a quiet, sedate life. But after receiving a mysterious letter, followed by a surprise visit from Kate, a whole new adventure is about to begin for him.

Mimi Matthews has once again crafted a beautiful love story that drew me in from beginning to end, and I absolutely loved it!

Charles and Kate are fabulously developed characters with such great chemistry. The story was well-paced and engaging, with a suspenseful mystery to solve and a dangerous villain that you love to hate.

The parents of Kate and Charles are characters from two previously published books, and I loved their appearance in this story. They are obviously older now, but I was delighted that they are still so much in love with each other.

Many thanks to the author for an eARC. All opinions are my own.

One of my favorite things about Mimi Matthews is her love of animals and this novel was full of them. I was so excited about getting this and then I was hesitant to start it because it would be so soon. But alas I’ve done just that and I’m here now in my happy place. Such a great book.
This intriguing story had the grown parents of past books and we are introduced to the next generation. My favorites things are a strong willful female protagonist and an equally strong male. Honor above all. And stolen kisses. This had all of that.
There also was a little bit of a mystery with a twist. I loved all the pets of course and the bonds with the siblings, it was wonderful. The love and banter they showed was endearing. I definitely recommend this novel.
And I’m super excited about the next in the series! Yay!

All the heart eyes for this one.♡
This is such a charming, cozy romance. It’s a little shorter than the first two in this series, but bursting with just as much character! I love how this follows the children of Philly/Arthur and Maggie/Nicholas. It was so fun to see them with their grown-up children and to witness the closeness of the families. Kate reminds me a lot of her mother; feisty, passionate and goes after what she wants. Charles was confident, compassionate, and slightly broody… swoon. Their chemistry was instant and they had some really sweet, romantic moments. The humor in this book was so good, too! Not just between Kate and Charles, but also between Kate and her brothers.
Speaking of, I know we’re getting Ivo’s story next but the set-up for the rest of the siblings was just too good for them not to have their own stories… especially James *wink-wink.*
Also, that cover?? Gorgeous.

Loved this! The plot moves quickly and I enjoyed the story. The swoony moments! So many but here are two of my favs:

"Charles-
He shook his head. Don't tempt me, Kate. I can't keep resisting you forever."

"That's the trouble, sweetheart. I don't want just anyone. I want you. Why else do you suppose I'm here?"

I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!!
