This is an emotional and touching book that starts off with a strange happening in the life of widow Natalie Maynard as she returns home to Richmond from a vacation to find that a man, she trusted has conned her out of all of her possessions and home. The detective on the case, Randy, is drawn to Natalie and spends time over and above to try to solve her case. He is hoping that she will one day become a friend as well. After a while, she remembers that her husband left her a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, so she moves up there to regroup. We met some wonderful people in the book, in both Richmond and the small mountain town of Chestnut Ridge. The townsfolks all open their hearts and arms to Natalie, widow of their special hometown son, including a reclusive older man needing some extra help. She doesn't have any family and soon finds that family can be anyone who cares for you and opens themselves up to you. It was nice to see Natalie begin to heal and take a chance at life again. There are surprises in store as the book wraps up and ends with a great ending. I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review, and these are my thoughts and opinions.
“A broken heart can possibly be one of the most powerful things in your life. A kickstart, if you will…if you let it.”
A new-to-me author, Nancy Naigle has impressed me with her ability to keep me interested in romance stories! I’ll be honest with you - I’m NOT a romance reader. It was the cover that pulled me in. I could imagine myself there and wanted to find out if this author could write a romance that would sustain my interest.
She can and she did!
I absolutely loved this first installment of the Chestnut Ridge series. Yes, you read that correctly…’absolutely loved.’ The setting and characters were AMAZING and I found myself wanting to be part of the giving kindness in the Chestnut Springs community. I was swept away by the love against all odds story and my inner sleuth was curious about the mystery.
There’s something within us all that wants to see restitution and second chance love for those who’ve been devastated and jaded. Naigle gives us this in her sweet, inspiring, small-town romance. She’s incorporated just enough suspense to balance the sweetness. I loved the eccentric characters in Chestnut Springs, smiled at the amusement over the conman’s name and the truth behind the white ladies’ hat on the door, and was eager for a ride in the sixty-six Fastback and justice to be served
“Family can be strangely difficult.”
Let Naigle sweep you away to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Fulton County where you’ll be captivated by her story exploring a broken family, grief, loneliness, hope, and a second-chance romance.
I’m eagerly looking forward to book two.
I was gifted this copy by St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
And Then There Was You by Nancy Naigle Chestnut Ridge #1. Contemporary romance. Inspirational. Natalie Maynard comes home from vacation to find everything she owned stolen and gone. She thought she had a loving relationship but in fact had been love bombed by a swindler. After working with Detective Randy Fellowes for months with little progress, she moves to a small fishing cottage in Chestnut Ridge. There she reconnects with townspeople and starts to heal.
An explosive beginning leads to a heartbreaking loss, gradual recovery and rebuilding love. Occasional Christian overtones. It’s a touching and emotional path of fabulous friends, healing, and found family.
Classic Nancy Naigle writing style—inspirational and heartwarming contemporary light romance. Natalie Maynard is heartbreakingly scammed by a professional conman who takes everything she has and leaves her broke and alone. Her husband, Jeremy, is deceased. Detective Randy Fellowes gently handles her wrecked emotions and, over time and distance develops romantic feelings for her.
Natalie has to start over and decides to move to a rustic cabin her husband owned in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Arriving in Chestnut Ridge, she meets the sweetest elderly lady, Orene, who remembers Jeremy. It seems the town has been waiting for Natalie to come to the cabin which is simple, yet perfect for her needs. The Detective stays in touch, although leads on the culprit are few. Reminders of Natalie’s husband are everywhere, and Natalie loves living there in the middle of nature. It gives her inspiration for her note card designs. Orene introduces her to a man, Jesse, who hires Natalie to drive an elderly gentleman on errands and appointments. Mr. Paul Grandstaff and Natalie slowly get to know each other although he won’t allow her inside the gate to his home. Randy comes to visit her and they enjoy a platonic relationship, so far.
Natalie soon learns why Paul doesn’t want anyone to see his home. He’s an unusual man with a beautiful home that shows his sweet soul, yet others might not understand. Randy gets a hot lead on the conman’s whereabouts and he’s arrested. Natalie is very thankful. With Randy’s encouragement, Mr. Grandstaff reveals a secret he’s been hiding for years. The story has a special and happy ending.
I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press. All opinions are my own.
After being swindled out of her house, cash, and a majority of her belongings, Natalie Maynard moves to Chestnut Ridge to start a fresh new life. Natalie could not get over how she had been so naive and trusting of that man she thought would be her lifetime partner.
As with most victims of a con, Natalie is ashamed to go public about her situation, even if it meant that the police would have a better chance of apprehending the perpetrator. As the investigation moves forward, the detective on the case — Randy Fellowes, attempts to convince Natalie to go public. And in doing so, finds that Natalie may be just the woman he’s been dreaming of.
And Then There Was You was a wonderful second chance at romance novel. Wholesome, and clean with a dash of faith. It is the quintessential contemporary romance novel.
As usual, Naigle’s characters are well developed. I loved the primary characters. But even the secondary characters had a place in my heart. The back country setting just added to the charm of the characters and small town feel.
The plot contained a few unexpected twists, which made for an engaging read. Yet, there were also a number of poignant and heartfelt moments that moved me to tears. But the pièce de résistance was the finale. It was a welcome and timely surprise.
For Hallmark movie fans, And Then There Was You is a must read. Five glowing stars.
I received a digital ARC from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
This is a delightful, feel good, clean, contemporary romance novel. It is also the first book in a new series by this author, Nancy Naigle. Set in a fictitious small town called Chestnut Ridge in Virginia, readers will quickly fall under the spell of this close-knit group of inhabitants.
The main character, Natalie, has taken the chance to open herself up to love again two years after her husband died. Except, in doing that, she finds that she has become the victim of a clever, serial swindler. Devastated, she meets a kindly detective that seeks to help her find justice and a new start.
While trying to put bad things behind her and move forward, after she was scammed, Natalie moves to Chestnut Ridge where her husband owned a small hunting cabin. She soon begins to pick up the pieces of her life with the help of friendly and endearing neighbors and town residents. At the same time, she uncovers a family secret and may even find a new love once again.
While reading this story, I kept thinking that it would really make a great Hallmark movie. At the end, I learned that this author has had many of her novels made into Hallmark Movies! This is certain to be another one!
This would be the perfect book and series for fans of Jan Karon's books about Mitford and/or readers who love Viola Shipman novels. I can't wait to meet these characters again in the next book in this series.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of, And Then There Was You, by Nancy Naigle, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Natalie is shocked when she comes back from being away, to find her house completely cleared out, I could not even imagine that., by her boyfriend, now ex. Natalie wants answers and goes to the police for help. This town is wonderful, I liked all the characters, except the ex.
And Then There Was You is a charming, uplifting tale that takes you into the life of Natalie Maynard, a confused, heartbroken widow who, after falling for a con man that left her confidence shattered, her life in tatters and her money all gone, moves to her late husband’s cabin in the idyllic mountains of Virginia to regroup, start over, and perhaps find some peace, family, and a new place to call home.
The writing is warm and fluid. The characters are kind, attentive, and supportive. And the plot is a sweet, heartfelt blend of life, loss, friendship, grief, introspection, drama, community, tricky situations, romantic gestures, unconditional love, and new beginnings.
Overall, And Then There Was You is a heartwarming, hopeful, captivating tale by Naigle that’s a promising start for this new Chestnut Ridge series and is definitely the perfect choice for anyone who loves endearing characters and small-town charm.
Thank you to SMP Romance – St. Martin’s Press for gifting me a copy in an exchange for an honest review.
And Then There Was You by Nancy Naigle. A delightful, almost fairy tale of a story. Love, compassion, laughter and tears along with a small town populated with an array of memorable characters. Randy and Natalie are perfect for each other and as they get to know one another, their love grows stronger. A very entertaining and pleasant read.
Thank you to the author, St. Martin's Press, and Netgalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
Natalie, a young widow, has been swindled out of just about every possession she owns and all of her money. It takes her some time to accept the reality of the situation, and she starts as a bit unlikable with her naivete.
When she remembers her husband left her his hunting cabin in rural Chestnut Ridge, she takes off for a new life pursuing a fresh start.
What she finds is a town that welcomes her with open arms. She also keeps in close contact with the detective in the case on the search for the man who conned her and in him finds that maybe she will learn to trust again.
Between the detective, her ride or die friend Sheila, and the new town, Natalie finds that family doesn't need to be blood and that families can be "strangely difficult" but worth it all the same.
I'm rounding down because I just feel there seemed to be some inconsistencies looking back and some things that were mentioned a few times like they'd be important or at least circled back to, but instead we were left hanging. Perhaps the next books in the series will explore some of those avenues further? I also felt the book had much more telling than showing, and the conversations (especially early on) felt stilted and awkward.
I did enjoy it for a light read and binged it in one day, so pick it up if you want some small town charm.
It's a heartwarming, emotional & intriguing romance. Natalie lost her husband two years ago. She felt it was time to move on. That is until she returned from vacation, when her whole life was turned upside down. Randy, a Detective, met with Natalie. He didn't believe her story at first. He worked hard on solving the case. And his growing feelings for her were undeniable. Great characters you will fall in love with. Small town charm. I was captivated by the book from the start. It's a beautiful story of family, love & loss. And a chance at love the second time around. I loved reading every page!!
#1 in the Chestnut Ridge Christian chick lit series
Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
After being swindled by a major con, Natalie has to regroup and decide what to do in her life. Luckily, she's strong and independent (almost to a fault), and she decides to relocate to Chestnut Ridge where her late husband had a remote cabin. Here she can find hope again in a new direction. Randy Fellowes, the detective on her case, has motives that become more personal than business, when he falls for Natalie. But he's one of the good guys. In Chestnut Ridge, Natalie finds a group of warm and friendly people with a small-town vibe. Not something I'd like since they were totally involved in her life, but they seemed to be just what she needed to rebuild her trust in people. This book was a good combo of genres. There was the mystery of the con to be solved. Plus there was some romance swirling around between Natalie and Randy (at least on his part). And the small-town people and their issues provided a chick lit feel. There was a sense of Christian romance, but this was not emphasized too much, just enough to remind me that it was there. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book by this new-to-me author. It definitely had an overall warmth and friendliness that permeated the book, with a message of kindness. This is a good beginning to what promises to be a very pleasant and easy-to-read series.

THOUGHTS:
After being scammed by a professional con-man, Natalie has lost everything she owned. She remembers her late husband’s fishing cabin in Chestnut Ridge. It’s there in that town where she begins to heal, fall in love with the town and it’s people, and also over time find love again.
This was a super sweet love story. I liked the bit of mystery with solving and catching the con-man. I loved how the town welcomed her with open arms where Jeremy was well loved. Natalie’s cabin up in the mountains sounded so heavenly and peaceful.
Detective Randy Fellowes was respectful of Natalie and her wishes of just being friends at first. But it was so sweet to see over time and distance how they both gravitated towards each other more and more.
Overall, if you’re looking for a book with small town charm, a bit of mystery, and some light romance... this is the one for you! 💕
This book made me feel warm and cozy inside. Natalie was conned and taken to the cleaners, which naturally made her doubt the actions and thoughts of others. Unfortunately, she also lost confidence in herself on many different levels.
Detective Randy Fellows is in charge of the police case against the con artist. He is very good at his job...and yet something is missing. Could a relationship with Natalie fill that void? Could such a relationship even be possible?
Natalie makes the decision to take control of her life. She moves to Chestnut Ridge, although she knows no one there. Her deceased husband had a hunting and fishing cabin outside of town. Natalie quickly makes friends, but will an overheard conversation undo and ruin everything positive in her new life? Does she have the courage to seek the answers to her doubts and fears? Can she embrace the possibilities of the present?
I won a free ARC of this book in return for my honest review. My review is my own opinion.
First off, I adore the cover of this book. It's so inviting. It makes you want to sit down and curl up with a great book. I recommend sitting down with this one. And Then There Was You is a fun, sweet read with wonderful characters and a great storyline. I adored the town of Chestnut Ridge and all of the townsfolk that lived there. Actually I enjoyed this book so much, once I started reading I didn't want to stop until I was finished. This book gave me all the feels, and would definitely make a perfect Hallmark movie.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
Nancy Naigle always delivers a charming and entertaining story that never fails to engage me. Natalie, the lead character, is plucky, kind, smart and generous and you can't help but root for her to find happiness. This story was a welcome escape from the many thrillers I read and NN is a lovely writer who creates vivid descriptions of the town of Chestnut Ridge and the appealing characters who reside there. I love my yearly dose of NN and am already looking forward to her next work.
What a great start to a new series! The characters are dynamic and so believable that I cried for Natalie and how the con artist fooled her. When she went to Chestnut Ridge to try to recover from all of her losses including her self-esteem and confidence, she meets some of the best people ever. Those characters who befriended and accepted her made the story for me. The community and acceptance that they showed Natalie was nothing short of amazing! Detective Randy Fellowes was a stalwart champion, the man determined to find the con man and help Natalie get at least part of her former life back. I think my favorite character was Natalie because of her courage and steadfast willingness to risk her future if necessary in order to restore her sense of self-worth. There were a few unexpected twists in the story that made me gasp with surprise as well as cheer silently for the way they added to the story. This is a wonderful story of resilience and finding your place in life after devastating losses. Natalie Maynard has just been swindled out of her life savings, her home, and her dignity by her now EX-boyfriend who has mysteriously vanished after their magical trip to a tropical paradise. At first, she clings to the hope that he has been kidnapped, but her best friend and a handsome detective finally help her realize that this man whom she trusted with her heart after losing her husband is NOT the man he seemed. Left with nothing, Natalie is forced to re-think her life plan and escape to her deceased husband’s forgotten fishing cabin in remote Chestnut Ridge. The people she meets, and the cabin itself, lead her to a discovery about the man she had married and how some secrets can start with good intention. Meanwhile, back in her hometown, the handsome detective becoming fast friend, Randy Fellowes, is unravelling some secrets of his own about Natalie’s missing ex – and his own reluctance to let this case go unsolved.
Naigle has created a sweet story about new beginnings even after intense heartbreak. I appreciate how she interweaves faith into the conversation and that she does not shy away from hard topics concerning family. The characters of Chestnut Ridge are quirky and fun and she has left a lot of room for more stories to develop in the beginning to this new series. And Then There Was You is a quick, feel-good read that made me smile and appreciate the people who pop into my life!
Natalie’s first romantic relationship after the death of her husband turns out to be nothing but a lie which has impacted her both financially and emotionally, but it does bring Randy, the detective investigating the situation, into her life. After this experience she remembers her husband owned a cabin in Chestnut Ridge, so she decides that this is the perfect place for her to regroup.
Randy is drawn to Natalie and wants to help her through this difficult time in her life. Even though her case has more questions than answers he isn’t about to give up on getting or justice or showing her that she can find love again if she is willing to open her heart to the possibilities.
I really enjoyed all the residents of Chestnut Ridge as they embraced her and helped her heal along with the love and support of Randy. This is a heartwarming story about love, friends and new beginnings.
Squeaky clean and heart warming. Young widow Natalie Maynard comes home from vacation to learn that her new boyfriend is a professional con-artist and has taken almost everything she owns. She reports it to the police and Detective Randy Fellowes wants to see justice done. She takes some time recovering and staying with a best friend when she recalls that her husband has a hunting/fishing cabin a couple of hours away. She wonders if she could live there as she starts over.
The small town of Chestnut Ridge welcomes her. She is a nurse and she provides some companion care but more so find other talents to help support her. In the mean time Detective Randy continues to stay in touch.
This is more women’s fiction as Natalie is the focus while she settles into small town life. She has to learn to trust again after being bamboozled. For me to call something a romance that has to be the focus for more than half the book and in this case it isn’t. Randy is a great guy but this is her story.
I’m new to the author but can see she has had books adapted for Hallmark which fits the writing. This is the first in a new series and while I enjoyed the story I wanted more of a romance. The two MCs spend very little time together until the later part of the book. Thank you to Set Martin’s Press for offering me an ARC via NetGalley and I am leaving an honest review. (3.5 Stars)
Cute book, very Hallmark Movie ish vibes...turns out 8 of this author's books were made into Hallmark movies. This is supposedly the first in the series, when more come out, I will read them for a feel good book.
Knowing myself, I grabbed this one because I really liked the cover...and of course, the little dog. Fortunately in this case, I liked the book as much as the cover suggested I would. Sometimes that backfires on me but not this time. Some parts of this book are pretty much cliche but hey, I'm not gonna lie. I don't hold that against it...I loved the characters, I loved the story line and I cannot get the location out of my mind. Like, I am about to move to a mountain cabin somewhere and call it a day...I would most likely read it again in the future and I will definitely be reading more by this author.
Let me start by saying this is a must read. If you love a great fairy tale with a fantastic ending this is your next book. Plus, it has puppies and a castle. Let's not forget a handsome detective soon to be sheriff! Now that I shared your next read with you, I am off to hunt for some Fairy stones. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required, and all views expressed are our own.
This was good read! I haven't read anything else in the "Chestnut Ridge" books so hadn't heard of any of the characters or the setting before. However, this book can easily stand alone and one doesn't need to have experience with any of the other books in order to appreciate and understand everything that takes place in this particular book. The book opens with a great scene which propels us immediately into the heart of the problem and introduces us to the main characters swiftly. Interestingly, this book did not have the very common romance trope of eyes meeting, falling in love, there's something about her/him (the ZING, if you will). Instead, this is very much a slow burn. In fact, The Storygraph has this book listed as medium-paced and I think that would be grossly over-stating the pacing here. Unlike many romance novels (even Christian ones), the main characters spend very little time together on the page until close to the mid-point. The book alludes to weekly visits over many months with the FMC needing the help of the MMC (he's a detective) which is the time that they get to know each other enough for the FMC to be start being comfortable with the MMC enough to open up a little bit (as she's got trust issues and some trauma to work through). However, little to nothing happens between them until the last third of the book. Interestingly, the book has almost a double storyline which includes not only the romance (which develops very slowly), but there's also a story of family woven throughout. There's a distinct theme of family not only being those we're related to by blood, but of family being those who support us and those who we choose and who choose us. It's on the back of this idea that the FMC comes to mean so much to and comes to really love and appreciate the people of Chestnut Ridge, even finding family she didn't know she had. Overall, this was a lovely story if a little understated. The pacing, I suspect, had quite a bit to do with giving the FMC time to adjust and overcome her past hurts more than anything else. But, as she comes to be more comfortable and finds herself again, she comes out of her shell and is open to possibilities once again.
Then There Was You is a stand-alone novel that follows Natalie who is seeking a fresh start. Natalie has a terrible tragedy after terrible tragedy happen to her which leads to her life perspective shift.
While this book is written in third person, the author slips in first person narrative for the characters “side thoughts” which I thoroughly enjoyed. The author’s writing style was fast-paced and easily understood. I haven’t read any other books by this author, but I might seek them out now!
The twists and turns in this romance/mystery were entertaining and kept me going. The middle was the book did drag out a little for me, but by the end I understood that the character building was needed to wrap up loose ends.
Overall, I enjoyed this read and gave it 3/5 stars due to the slight drag in the middle. I recommend to give this book a shot!
This book was a little slow for me and I found it hard to connect with the main characters. While Natalie is reliving the loss of her husband and the hurt from her swindler, I feel as though the emotions I should have felt from her just weren't conveyed realistically. The story overall is beautiful, and I fell in love with the town, but think it lacked the character development and relationship building that I want to see in a book like this.
Welcome to Chestnut Ridge, Virginia, and the fishing cabin Natalie runs to after being swindled by a con artist. And Then There Was You is a heartwarming story of courage, healing, and love. Natalie and Randy are two endearing characters who will worm their way into your heart! I loved the small town setting and the quirky people who live there! Looking forward to more stories set in this charming town!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Natalie is shocked to find everything gone when she returns hone from vacation. Her ex boyfriend stole everything. She files a police report. She decides go to travel to a cottage she has. While their she meets she gets to know the detective working her case and grows to like him more and more. I liked this book.
I enjoyed this new book of Nancy Naigles. This was a nice light read. I adore the setting. So beautiful. There's a lot of positivity no matter what happens in life. Lite on Christian fiction. It was a very feel good read.
Thank you NetGalley for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
