Having seen “The Batman” several times, I was thrilled to have this but wasn’t sure what surprises it would hold. Not only was the writing incredibly expressive for a screenplay (notably the onomatopoeia during the Batmobile chase), but there were several moments included that didn’t make the final cut of the film! Reading it also gave me a chance to connect a few more dots thematically and narratively that I missed when watching it.

In addition to the full script, Insight Editions has also included production stills throughout as well as a brief but interesting Q+A with Matt Reeves.

Note: As of this writing, “The Batman Part II” is scheduled for release in October 2025! Matt Reeves is working on the script with Mattson Tomlin who recently wrote the fantastic “Batman: The Imposter.” Can’t wait to see what they come up with! Please fast forward to 2025.

A brooding neo-noir take on a character and world that's been explored seemingly countless times on screen already. It's dialogue-heavy but still delivers strong sequences dictated entirely by action. Reeves is fully committed to channeling the neo-noir films of the 70s, so much so that even the names of characters are not given to us in the stage directions until we as the audience are 100% sure they are who they are. It falls short in some moments, and it feels like our titular detective doesn't always work for the answers he gets, but still delivers a great mystery-driven take on Batman.

It was actually a tricky screenplay to read. We're told as screenwriters to capitalize important things (character introductions, sounds, essential props, etc.) but the author seemed to think that Everything was Important and there were swathes of capitalized sections and underlined sections. Or perhaps that was an editing error that crept it (because at one point it all stopped rather suddenly, maybe on purpose, who knows?)

And I know screenplays are written and re-written, but surely the author(s) could be credited, rather than just "by Insight Editions." I'd never put out "Hamlet, by Ashley Publishing."

(Note: I'm a writer, so I suffer when I offer fewer than five stars. But these aren't ratings of quality, they're a subjective account of how much I liked the book: 5* = an unalloyed pleasure from start to finish, 4* = really enjoyed it, 3* = readable but not thrilling, 2* = disappointing, and 1* = hated it.)

The Batman was my favorite film of 2022 so it was a joy to read the shooting script! Matt Reeves is a wonderful director and the script by him and Peter Craig is wonderfully realized on screen. My favorite part of reading screenplays is watching the movie after and noticing all the details and small changes made. The descriptions of the emotional beats and action scenes are really wonderful! I got this as a birthday present so it's wonderful to just gush about it here!

So this is nearly word for word what we see in the film, which is incredible. It’s such a well written script, that it’s no wonder what we eventually saw was so well executed because by that point they had exactly what they wanted on the page. There are at least two scenes in this that are not in the film. I would love to see the 4 hour cut of the script, but that might never happen. Despite that, this is a wonderful read and will inspire another watch.

The Batman is easily one of the best Batman stories out there, the script is really great and the quality of the copy itself is great.
Beautifully formatted with amazing page-length stills from the film, and it includes deleted scenes from the film.
A great read if you loved The Batman!

Loved the dialogue part of the screenplay. The excessive use of bold, underline, and capital words during the transitioning and description of scenes was distracting and annoying to the eye and affected my readability and enjoyment of the screenplay.

😆🦇❤ Gosh I am so obsessed with The Batman. Love it so much.
The inclusion of the deleted scenes was nice! Honestly, I'm glad they deleted that scene with The Joker though.
