Cryptid CarnageThe call of the wild is an alluring one to many people. The vast wilderness of the forests, lakes, jungles, and beyond are often places of solitude and retreat. They are places to become one with yourself and nature, a safe haven to rest, explore, and marvel at something beyond your daily life.

But can we know what truly lurks in those unexplored reaches of our lands? Can we fathom what living rarities may be hidden in those dark caves, and endless lakes? Can we be certain that the peace we seek can be found as we wander into the unknown reaches of the wild?

The stories assembled here offer you some answers to those questions. But peace is not guaranteed. Nor is safety. Within these pages, you will find solitude, but no place to retreat, and no one to hear you scream. Welcome to the carnage. Explore at your own risk.

From the descriptions of Packanack Ridge National Park, I would have also wanted to see the surroundings, especially considering how long it had been since they had visited. If I would've been in Amanda and Kyle's situation I would've felt terrible. I liked hearing about the smaller one in this story.
I liked Amanda and Aiden in 'Peppermint and Spice'. I thought both of their characters were strong and I worried about them as they were worrying about each other. The scene with Amanda and the window had me going no, no, no. I liked all the descriptions of this cryptid, especially page 39, in the 3rd paragraph.
I had never heard of the creature at Killarney Park, so I thought this one was interesting since it was new for me. I liked the descriptions of how it looked. The 1st paragraph on page 54, Stan's comment made me laugh because I probably would've said something similar if I saw what Stan and Karen saw.
The cryptid in 'A Piney's Tale' always freaked me out when I was younger, after reading, I think I'm still freaked out 🤣. I liked Tanya and Zoe, I didn't think I would like Chris, but I did at the end. I liked the water tower scene, I thought that the idea of it would be scary.
I kept shaking my head at Dr. Milner'. I feel conflicted with his character, I went back and forth with how I felt about him. I felt bad for his co-workers. I like the creature inside, from the descriptions it seemed terrifying.
I appreciated the lake setting in the next story. I was expecting something completely different, and I laughed at the creature in this one, every time he spoke I was just oh my goodness why is he like this 🤣 I liked the locals and their attitudes towards what was swimming in the lake. I thought what happened to Cody was creative and I think that was the best scene in this specific story. The creature's comment on page 87 made me laugh again because that was another surprise I wasn't expecting.
'The Last Expedition of the ...' had me feeling nostalgic. I enjoyed the setting. I liked hearing about Ellie's dad's group and what they did. I like her dad the best out of all the characters. I thought Ellie's last words were fitting and I smiled. I thought her experience at the end was neat.
I liked the cryptid and Mateo in 'You Pray to the Devil, and He Will Answer'. I liked how the cryptid was described, it would be terrifying to see. Mateo's behavior made me know something crazy was about to happen. I thought Sebastian's scene was fitting for the story.
The next cryptid had me feeling anxious. The cave scenes in this series always get to me, the descriptions inside those scenes are so vivid. I did like Beth's character the most, especially when she was dealing with Billy. The creature's responses always creep me out.
'White Sands' gave me another cryptid I had never heard of. I really liked the descriptions of these guys and their habitat, I thought their environment was interesting. On page 176 I would've probably done what Brett did and I would've died trying to pet it after it made its noise.

I admit it, I'm a big fan of cryptid horror and anthologies can be a treat when done well. With this book, there is no question. Each author has managed to produce a great contribution to this anthology and although all are very well written, some stories manage to stand out just a bit more (at least in my personal opinion). As the title suggests, this book is about cryptids. The stories vary from dark and thrilling, to more lighter and even somewhat quirky. One thing they all have in common though, is that all the critters are brutal... well, almost. 😉 It truly is a fun read, hard to put down and it features a variety of cryptids, ranging from the well known iconic ones, to a few that are less well known (which I absolutely appreciate). So, all in all, it is a very welcome addition to the cryptid genre and absolutely worth a read.

What a great time I had with this anthology. This collection runs the gamut from the Mothman to the Jersey Devil and everything in between. If you're looking to sink your teeth into some short bangers, then look no further. This book scratched an itch I didn't even know I had.
