This book is exactly what I never knew I needed. It fills a niche with age gap that I think is severely lacking. This isn't a knock on age gap at all...I just wish there were also more like this one out there right now.
Jake and Peyton are this perfect combination of sweet and forbidden. While Peyton may have had a crush on Jake as a teenager, their romance doesn't begin until much later when they are both adults. Jake doesn't even recognize her at first, because he previously only knew her as his best friend's niece, and a lot has changed in the years that have passed. Now that she's a gorgeous 32 year old, the chemistry they share now can't be denied as they meet again.
Both Jake and Peyton initially try to fight the sparks between them. Peyton is looking for a fresh start, and upsetting her Uncle Keith who has always been like a surrogate dad is the last thing in the world she wants. Jake is adjusting to being a full time single dad, and getting involved with his son's guidance counselor who is 14 years younger than him is just asking for trouble. Not to mention what is best friend Keith will think of him falling hard for Keith's beloved niece. But it doesn't take long for the sparks to explode, and lead to an epic romance.
I love that while they keep their relationship a secret (at first on purpose, then bad timing), we get to spend so much time with them as a couple. Not only do we get to see the passion that completely engulfs them, we also see them get through daily life and trying times together. We get to see strong, tough Jake's marshmallow center as both a partner and a parent. We get to see Peyton as a supportive partner, and a strong woman who adores her work and loves with all she has.
This story is filled with scenes that will melt your Kindle as well as scenes that will leave you swooning. It can't be narrowed down to one trope, because it is just as messy as real life. It is an all encompassing story that will draw you in and refuse to let you go.
I also loved the side characters in this story. Kelly Lakes is such a fun small town filled with nosy neighbors, great friends, and family that loves deep. I would absolutely love to see more of this town and these characters. I know this is a book I will read over and over again.

When I saw age gap I knew I was going to want to read this but I didn’t realize how much I was going to love it. This story was beautifully written, between the love story and the subplots it was just fantastic. There was so much love in this book. Peyton and Jake had a very intense relationship, things heated up quickly with them but their love for each other is so real and goes beyond the sexual chemistry. There is also the love between Peyton and her Uncle Keith. They have such a strong relationship for being uncle-niece and he has been one of the most supportive people in her life. Jake and Keith have the ultimate bromance relationship. They have been best friends for a long time and are together all the time. This is the main source of conflict in Jake and Peyton’s relationship because neither one of them wants to hurt Keith or have either of their relationships with him affected. I also loved Jake’s son Mike and the relationship he has with his father and that he developed with Peyton.
I highly recommend this book if you love age gap, forbidden, really sexy love stories. Peyton and Jake were willing to risk everything to be together, but will it be worth it?

Stephanie Rose has definitely turned up the heat with An Unexpected Turn. Not that I’m complaining. Nope. I enjoyed every moment and dirty word from both Peyton and Jake’s lips.
An Unexpected Turn is a single dad and age gap in the small town Kelly Lakes.
Jake’s fourteen years older than Peyton and it worked in his favor. This couple was great together. Scorching chemistry that just kept on sizzling throughout the story. Every little glance, touch was just ooooh so good.
Besides focusing on the romance between Peyton and Jake it’s also a story about relationships and friendships. There’s Peyton’s close bond with her uncle Keith and his family who’s also best friends with Jake. Then there’s Jake and his son Mike. These relationships were beautifully written cause I felt the love.
Peyton and Jake had their reasons for keeping their relationship a secret and not telling her Uncle. It gave them time to just enjoy one another and explore if it could turn into something serious. The steam was just top notch. I find it sexy when a woman knows what she wants and is vocal about it. Peyton is this kind of woman. Dirty talk be damned. You go girl. Jake’s a sexy cinnamon roll alpha man with one heck of a stamina and devilish tongue. As hot as these two were love was what shined through.
Their love story made me smile. Stephanie Rose knows her strengths and uses them in this wonderful small town romance.

Going to give this four stars because I loved the bonus epilogue. Without that it would’ve been 3 because why did he go to coffee with someone he used to hookup with while he’s dating the h?? It’s not even properly resolved for me. He says he knew she wouldn’t take no for an answer so he went, but so the fuck what?? A 46 year old man can’t open his mouth and say it’s not appropriate for him to go get coffee with an old hookup, even if it’s to talk about “business”, because he has a girlfriend ?? That really annoyed me especially because he just walks out with her right in front of the h and never properly apologizes for it

An Unexpected Turn was a wonderful, seamless read. I always enjoy a book by Ms Rose, but I loved this one because of the feeling of family. Old family, new family, second chances, new beginnings.
Jake and Peyton fight the chemistry they feel between them for so many reasons, until the day they can't fight it anymore. As they evolve and fall in love, they face each obstacle in their path together, and when the final hurdle is crossed, their love is a sweet reward. The added bonus scenes and extended epi made this a heartwarming, wonderful read. It put a smile on my face from start to finish.

But their chemistry can not be denied and soon they get caught up in secret relationship that could cost them both.
This was a sweet story with truly likable characters. She's so caring and kind hearted. And he has mega swoon, while still being sexy. They will light up your kindle. And also make you smile and feel. But... I found it weird that her uncle was so close to her in age (12-14 years I believe). The whole forbidden conflict of it not being okay because he was like a father figure when the age gap wasn't that deep... I don't know why, but I couldn't wrap my mind around it. So this rating is reflective of that, my own personal hangups making it not quite the storyline for me. But it is a sweet quick read aside from that. I read it in a day. So if these are your tropes, and it sounds like your jam, definitely give it a try!

When Peyton goes to stay with her uncle she never wanted another scandal attached to her name. Staying away from her student’s father might make her rethink that. Jake is Mike’s dad and very interested in his son’s new guidance counselor. There might be one obstacle…Peyton is his best friend’s niece!! They have both been burned in past relationships but can they maybe take one last chance at love with each other? What a sweet and romantic second chance story of not giving up on love. I enjoyed seeing an older hero in his forties with a teen son as the lead in this romance. A feel good, small town romance . Told in dual POV

This author always feels like coming home; you're comfortable, there's a fire going with a cup of coco in your hands, and you know you're going to fill up on all the good feelings. That's banking if you like your family of course, but I promise not to let bore you with my trauma. Lol. But then she went ahead and released an age gap, forbidden romance with ALL the feels, and omg guys it's SO GOOD. Jake and Peyton (and who is living out their OTH dreams with these two? Lmao) have such a beautiful relationship, and honestly I just loved this book so much.
Peyton is escaping a scandal and a fallout of a relationship and being around family and the small town life along with her new job is doing wonders to heal her bruised heart. When she comes face to face with her forbidden teenage crush, who is know a sexy single dad, all those feelings come rushing back to her. But the thing that's different is that Jake is now seeing her as a woman he wants, and although they have a mountain of obstacles in their way, but the way they love one another? So freaking worth it.
Jake is a great hero, and I loved his relationship with his son too. He goes back and forth between wanting Peyton and being a good friend to her uncle (who is basically a father to her) but he wasn't wishy washy about it. He truly loved Peyton with his entire heart, and his devotion to her was really beautiful.
This was such a great addition to this authors catalog, and I so hope she writes more age gaps!! If you're wanting to dip your toes in the age gap trope pool this is the perfect one -- low angst, high steam and feels, with a happy ending that will make your heart happy!

This was a sweet slightly forbidden romance between a high school guidance counselor and the father of one of the students at her school.
Peyton is in her early thirties and starting over after a scandal at her last job. She moves to town to be closer to her family, and quickly runs into Jake, her teenage crush. Jake is in his late forties and raising his teenage son on his own.
He’s immediately attracted to Peyton but not willing to risk his relationship with his best friend who happens to be Peyton’s uncle, despite the chemistry between them. There’s a lot of tension as they try to ignore their feelings and when they finally give in it gets hot hot hot.
I also really enjoyed Mike’s progress through the book and how his relationship with both his dad and Peyton progressed throughout the book, and I really enjoyed Peyton's family.
My only small issue is that this is presented like an age-gap forbidden romance, and I guess I just don’t feel people in their 30s and 40s dating is a scandal. They’re both adults, who cares if he’s a decade older?
I still did enjoy it overall and do recommend it if you are looking for a sweet and spicy small town romance!

Cute age gap romance. I was super into it, until about the 70ish percent mark when the uncle still wasn't told. It was being repeated how they were trying to find the right time.... blah. Blah. Blah. By the time they did talk to him and get it out there we were at THE END (90ish%) ughhhhhhh
I did enjoy how they tried to stay away from each other but couldn't. Also how cute the relationship was with Mike and Peyton.
Not sure about the ex-wife drama, felt like it was being built up to have a major blow up, ut nothing like that happened.

I have been reading Stephanie for YEARS, she is a favorite of mine and I always know that diving into one of her stories will make me blissfully happy and it did but I'm also finding myself extremely emotional with this one, it has all the elements of a signature Rose book. A hero that is absolutely to die for, strong and swoony, loyal and sexy as sin. A heroine that you absolutely want to root for, who is amazing and that you know you could be great friends with.
Jake and Peyton will steal your heart and while you're reading about them growing into love with each other you'll be falling into love as well. Their chemistry is spine tingling and unshakable, it's unwavering and it is so pure. I love that there is absolutely no miscommunication in the way they feel about each other. Jake is so passionate and love sick over Peyton, he would do absolutely anything for her and it's honestly so refreshing to see, no one means more to him, except his son Mike of course. And Peyton is just as gone for Jake, they bring out the best in each other and they also bring out their possessiveness, which I love!
An unexpected Turn is intoxicating. It is sweet, sultry and intense, with these heart melty moments that will make you yearn for more but there's also scenes that will burn your pages!! And some how Rose made it even more special with the emotional elements that make you realize just how important and vital the love and support of family, the one you choose and the one that chooses you really is.

I loved, loved, loved these two. For me this was a beautiful love story, they had immediate chemistry, they tried to fight for a hot second, but then embraced it, and each other. They both knew they were it for each other, which was so obvious when they were together. This had all the feels, and so much love that my kindle was bursting with it. They just had my whole heart, so much love.

She picks this town to be closer to her favorite uncle, which just so happens to be the love of her life’s best friend. They try to tell her uncle many times, but since he is the sheriff, he always got called away.
This was a safe read, with a great storyline that I loved so much. Adored all the characters, her uncle and aunt, Jake’s son, this book just had it all. Soulmate passion, soulmate love with a side of insatiable steam. There were multiple epilogues with multiple timelines, which I loved and got a little teary eyed at, and a hea. Such a great relationship goals romance.

Single dad forbidden romances are one of my favorite tropes, but this one missed the mark. It started out well, but became way too repetitive and that was all I noticed. Like we get it.. you’re moving into a condo next week, Peyton. And at the end of every chapter, the hero and heroine were always questioning how wrong their feelings were for each other. I came to expect it and I hate that! I don’t want to notice repetitive phrases. It takes me out of the story. The main conflict was also a bit ridiculous. There is about a 15 year age gap between Jake and Peyton, with Jake being best friends with Peyton’s uncle/father figure. Now, it’s understandable if Peyton was 18 or in her early 20s even.. but to me, none of it was that big of a deal. So I made it about halfway and ended up skimming the rest of the book. It was well written but just not for me.

This book grabbed me and pulled me into a world of love and family like I haven't been pulled in quite some time. Peyton and Jake are just enough forbidden to bring the angst but more than enough soul-mate, heart-searing passion to make you root for them from the very first page. Stephanie's characters are always beautifully flawed in an utterly relatable way, and this book is no exception. The family relationships, life-long friendships, and ice-cream-melting scenes were thoroughly addicting. An emotional journey you won't want to miss.

It all started in a high school parking lot. Peyton recognizes her crush, Jake right away. His son has his eyes. It takes a moment, a moment to drink her in before recognition, and a moment he knows that has changed his life.
Peyton is younger, she is now the new guidance counselor at the high school in the hallmark town of Kelly Lakes. She is a complete knockout, and such a caring person. She has so much heart and inclusivity, we would all benefit from knowing her and having this incredible person in our school. The world needs more Peytons!

I felt like they were both truly in love for the first time. It was a slow burn romance that had me smiling so hard because they were coming alive on the pages I was reading. Surrounding the couple is a beautiful family, who are protective and loving. Uncle Keith, will feel so personal to many. I cried because it made me appreciate aunts/uncles in my life who mean(t)the world to me. They give extra and it’s so special to hold on to.
This, gosh, it may be may favorite book by the author. Yes, I think it is!
Jake earns Peyton’s trust, and though I was nervous about them revealing their relationship to others, I never doubted them. The author wrote a heartfelt, romantic story, that hit me in so many different ways. It was good for my soul and my loins ahah!
It all started in a high school parking lot. Peyton recognizes her crush, Jake right away. His son has his eyes. It takes a moment, a moment to drink her in before recognition, and a moment he knows that has changed his life.
Peyton is younger, she is now the new guidance counselor at the high school in the hallmark town of Kelly Lakes. She is a complete knockout, and such a caring person. She has so much heart and inclusivity, we would all benefit from knowing her and having this incredible person in our school. The world needs more Peytons!

Jake was a great parent and a friend but also a caveman as a boyfriend. He was a sweet and sexy combination. Peyton was such a sweetheart and her love for the children was so admirable. I loved how she connected with all of them. The ending scene in the epilogue was one of my favorite parts, a sweet payback.
If you love small-town romance with some hot adult scenes then I highly recommend you this book. I will rate it with 4.5 stars.

Right from the start I was hooked. It didn’t hurt that so many tropes I love we’re in this book, especially a single dad. I mean yes please, my favorite. I couldn’t read fast enough, I was consumed.
Peyton needed a change of scenery after an incident at her school in which she was a guidance counselor at. She wants to leave everything that happened behind so she decides to move where her uncle lives and takes a job at the local high school. Peyton hopes that this new start will be exactly what she needs, but she never expected for an old crush to ignite so many feelings.
Jake finally has his son living with him after wanting to spend more time with him than his ex-wife would allow. He’s trying to be the best dad he can and it definitely shows. He’s considerate, kind, hard-working, and an all around amazing man. It seems like everything is falling into place, but one thing Jake didn’t see coming was falling for his best friends niece.
Peyton and Jake had incredible chemistry. Even though they try not to give-in to what they’re feeling for each other it’s inevitable because their attraction is scorching. The sexual tension between them was tantalizing and downright fiery. They were perfect for each other and definitely made an excellent match.

Jake and Peyton’s book is a standalone and ends with a very happy ending. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV.
Jake (46) is surprised when he meets his son, Mike’s (14) guidance counselor and discovers that the beautiful woman (32) is his best friend’s niece. I loved the instant sizzle between them. Though Peyton was moving on from a difficult time when she moves to her uncle’s small town, she always appreciates Jake. She finds him very attractive both physically and personally as she gets to know him as the man and father he has become. He has a huge heart and is helping his son navigate a world that has completely changed. Though they try to avoid falling for each other because of the complications of her job and friend/family relationships, their love is an unstoppable force.
The heat between the two of them is intense. I also really appreciated how they communicate with each other and how friendship quickly morphs into much deeper feelings. There are some hot and steamy times, some very romantic and swoon-worthy moments, and times filled with heart-warming emotion. I loved both characters and I adored how their love was inevitable while being unexpected. I am honestly all in my feels after finishing this one. I seriously wish I could give it more stars. This author just keeps getting better and better and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Before I even opened the book, Stephanie Rose already had me halfway sold. But, the story oh this story was so freaking good!!
Daddy Jake, though?? My oh my, he was cinnamon roll sweet goodness and I just wanted to devour him. He also had a possessive alpha side to him that I was not expecting and hello a dirty talker on top on that?? Him with son, the moments between them, the desire he had to just be the best father, it was so heartfelt. I was a full on complete goner.
Together, he and Peyton were sweet smoldering perfection! I adored Peyton. She was kind with such a big heart and believed in the best of everyone. She’d give you the sweater off her back. She had a wholesome spirit and you couldn’t do anything but revel in it.
I read a lot of age-gaps so I went in with certain expectations but Stephanie Rose switched it all👏🏾the👏🏾up👏🏾 for me and let me tell you, I freaking loved it! An age-gap where the characters are in their 30s and 40s aaaand the woman is younger?? Say what now?! Talk about a plot twist I never saw coming.
I absolutely love the stories where I get to read about women my age still trying to figure things out, finding love and getting their own hea. It made Peyton even more relatable for me. Almost 4 stars. This is my favorite Stephanie Rose book, I think in part because I love the tropes featured in this one (age gap, small town, and single parent), but I also really liked the characters. Dating between Peyton and Jake could never be easy: 1) she’s his son’s guidance counselor, 2) she just got out of a hugely messy relationship, and 3) he’s her uncle’s (aka surrogate dad’s) best friend. So they have a bit of a forbidden relationship, and ultimately end up dating in secret. I didn’t love how long they kept the secret going. In that regard, it felt a bit like a miscommunication trope, only the miscommunication was between the couple and Uncle Keith. Also, I was a little surprised when I read one of the last chapters and then all of a sudden it was the epilogue. I thought I had a bit more story to go! So I guess in some ways, that means that I kind of wasn’t ready for this one to end. I feel like this book was exactly what I expected it to be based on the tropes, the blurb, and reading other books from the author. And truly, I do enjoy consistency and knowing what I’m getting into when I pick up a book. This one hit all the spots I was looking for it to.

Peyton has recently moved into her uncle Keith’s home for a short while when she sees his best friend Jake. Okay, I don’t really remember where she saw him since I quickly devoured this story in a day, but just know she sees him and thinks he’s even hotter then when she was 15 with a crush on him. Talk about some sexual tension! Whew we!!! He wants her and she wants him but neither act on it.
Did I mention he’s her uncle’s best friend? The uncle who thinks of her as his own daughter?
Did I also mention Jake is 14 years older then her AND he’s a single father?
This story checks all my favorite boxes!
I literally could not put this one down!

I’m weird about certain tropes. Always have been. Age gap is here or their sometimes. Forbidden too. But when it’s done like Ms. Rose did it, it’s perfection! I fell hard and fast into this book and adore Peyton and Jake so much! And also Uncle Keith, Mike, Aunt Maya and the twins. This book, man I really loved it. And devoured it. And it was just so so good!

When I read a book by Stephanie Rose I know I am going to get all the feels with little angst and a very happy ending. I read romance to get an escape from my daily life, and that’s exactly where this author takes me.
In An Unexpected Turn, we find our heroine, Peyton Miller, leaving the city and moving to a small town known as Kelly Lakes where she has family. There is a reason why she left to start over and all is revealed in good time. She stays with her Uncle Keith and his wife and kids, while she searches for a place to live and prepares for her new job as a high school counselor. Keith is the town sheriff, and I just love his family and loyalty to his niece. They are “good people” as my grandmom would say!
Keith is a good deal younger than her mom and she reconnects with his best friend Jake Russo who of course is now a total hottie and single dad. She hasn’t seen him since she was 15 and can’t help but still crush on him. To be honest, I crushed on him too as he is just my type!
Jake is a wonderful father, navigating his son, Mike, moving in with him full-time, plus running a successful construction company, and has led a very content life since getting divorced. His reaction and connection with Peyton is instant and the slow burn of the beginning of their relationship is just filled with longing and sexual tension.
They have a few strikes against them: he’s over a decade older, he’s her uncle’s best friend, and she’s his son’s school counselor, but that doesn’t stop them from exploring what could be. Even though they have to be creative with a kid in the house, it's full steam ahead!
I love their devotion and attraction to one another and how they risk it all to be together. Love how happy they make each other, and how his son thrives in his care and feels loved and wanted. This book will take you on their journey and I liked how they were honest with each other from the start. It took them awhile to let her family know, but I can understand waiting to see if it was the real deal before sharing the news.

Guys, I adored Jake and Peyton. Like, I’m sitting here smiling as I try to compose this review, thinking of all their sweetest, sexiest, and swooniest moments. Of which there were many because this was that kind of book—one that makes you chuckle and press your hand over your heart. Close your eyes as you savor the words and the growing connection between the characters. Makes you want to find a love just like the one leaping from the pages.
And compels you to keep reading until the words have all run out.
An Unexpected Turn was a one-sitting read for me. Curled up on my couch, dogs snuggled beside me, husband and children fed then ignored, I opened it up with high hopes. A dirty-talking older man falling for his best friend’s niece? Uhh, yes, please and thank you. I’ll take two, LOL.
It didn’t disappoint. Jake is book boyfriend perfection. He has a big heart and a big . . . capacity to love, and I lived for his growly, possessive moments as much as his softer, gentler moments, particularly those involving the kids in his life. And Peyton? Kind, caring, and trying to bounce back from her mistakes, she was likable, relatable, and man, I guess if *I* can’t have Jake, then I’m okay with her having him instead . . .

Ok this was a decent 3 star read. This book gave good small town, age-gap, single dad swoon. Lots of steam and two sweet main characters. The writing was good but sometimes the dialogue didn’t flow well or sound natural. The author should try reading her dialogue out loud to hear how it actually sounds because people aren’t usually so wordy when they speak. Overall though this book didn’t have enough meat in it to carry it, as a result it got repetitive and felt long. The contrived angst of the Uncle not approving their relationship and them waiting to tell him went on too long. You could tell it was only a matter of time before it bit them in the ass and it was obvious the uncle was going to find out before they got to tell him. So not a lot of originality in the plot.
The other thing to call out is the treatment of the heroine by the other characters was often younger than a 33 year old. She acted 33, had her stuff together like a 33 year old and yet people kept calling her a kid and acting like he was robbing the cradle. 33 is not young, she was not vulnerable and unable to make decisions on who she should be with. The hero was 46, so not ancient either. Overall a lot was made up of the age gap that really wasn’t so big of a deal. I think anyone over 30 can date whoever they like without people questioning if they know what they are doing. So really I think this author needed to put something more into this novel to make it more interesting. She needs to learn how to write side plots. Most novels of this length have a main story, and a side story to keep the momentum for the reader.
Anyway not a bad read, I’d try this author again and hope she works more on her craft to improve her overall story telling.
Update: don’t bother downloading the extended epilogue unless you loved this book. It’s incredibly long and doesn’t add anything to the HEA.

I think anyone over 30 can date whoever they like without people questioning if they know what they are doing. So really I think this author needed to put something more into this novel to make it more interesting. She needs to learn how to write side plots. Most novels of this length have a main story, and a side story to keep the momentum for the reader.
Anyway not a bad read, I’d try this author again and hope she works more on her craft to improve her overall story telling.
Update: don’t bother downloading the extended epilogue unless you loved this book. It’s incredibly long and doesn’t add anything to the HEA.

If you like age gap with a side of forbidden, you'll eat this one up. For me, the appeal is the small town setting and the element of “family is what you make it" with Peyton's uncle, Keith, having more of a fatherly role in her life.
After a disgraced romance at her old school in the city, Peyton moves to the small town of Kelly Lakes, to become one of the high school's guidance counselors. The move has the side benefit of her living close to her uncle Keith and his family, especially with her living in their basement until her condo is ready.
Jake Russo's comfortable, familiar life has been upended with his young teenage son coming to live with him. As he navigates the world of full-time parenting and dealing with his son's feelings of abandonment by his mother while settling into a new town and school, the new guidance counselor at Mike's school seems to know just the thing to say to help both Jake and Mike. And Jake's immediate attraction to her doesn’t hurt either, until he realizes Peyton is his best friend's niece.
This one, despite the forbidden element, was a light, breezy read for me, although there were a couple direct hits to the heart. But it's the author's note at the end that hit me the hardest and made me feel Peyton and Uncle Keith's relationship deep in my heart rather than observing in my mind's eye. Even if we don’t have our own Uncle Keith, the idea of that one special person being there for you throughout your life has a special resonance.
With small town quirks and lively secondary characters who excel at interfering and gossiping, I was quickly drawn into this one. Charming, humorous and heartfelt, Peyton and Jake's romance is the perfect reading escape, so make sure you don’t miss it.
