This is a cute series! My seven-year-old really likes it. It's got a fun "Finding Nemo" type vibe without feeling copycat-ish and deals with many of the issues and feelings that 5-7 year olds might be experiencing with school, friends and fears with a light, but not dismissive, approach. This book deals with the fearsome stories of the kelp monster -- yet also teaches that we shouldn't accept something as true based on rumors. There's also a small lesson about the importance of balanced ecosystems (kelp, sea urchins and sea otters).

This seems to be a solid series for children. If I weren't reading them aloud, I wouldn't be reading them on my own, but I do believe there is a place for books purely for children. My kids are loving it and it's a fun story that teaches a little.
