“Euphonia Gumboot is the daughter of my oldest friend. You will oblige me by marrying her at once.” When Aunt Hypatia arrives with the horrifying Euphonia Gumboot in tow, Bentley suggests an escape to New York in the company dirigible. Alas, the cat finds its way out of the bag and the dirigible becomes a kind of flying ark filled with friends, enemies... and Miss Gumboot. It will be a miracle if Cyril returns from America unbetrothed! "I haven’t enjoyed the company of such eccentric characters since A Confederacy of Dunces, and Tom Alan Robbins has managed to place them in the stylized world of Oscar Wilde. A really unique journey." Kevin Conroy, Actor, The voice behind the DC Comics superhero Batman. Go to Twitschronicles.com to learn more or to “Ask a Twit a Question!”
Twits Abroad: A Steampunk Distraction (Book III of the series) As promised, Cyril Chippington-Smythe and Bentley, his deeply loyal steam-powered domestic, are joined by The Usual Suspects in another fast-moving romp.
Reader learns before long, that the key movers have decided that the risk of social stigma will force a hastily arranged jaunt across the pond. The lushly-appointed dirigible is at hand, as luck would have it. Surprisingly, in the hours between hatching the plan and departing, word leaks out at Twits, Cyril’s posh club. As a result, the blimp is filled with characters—and plot. Ostensibly, it’s a scientific meeting drawing them to New Jersey and Manhattan, but what ensues is far from the orderliness one might associate with scientific discipline. Witty repartee overtakes the social commentary lying beneath the banter. Again, Reader can all but see the action as if it’s before them onstage. I’m already eager for Book IV, Twits on the Loose but have yet to get my copy….
While book 2 of The Twits Chronicles still remains my favorite of the series (and probably will always be), book 3 is certainly no slouch. We are introduced to a new character, the memory-impaired, unfortunately available and marriageable, Euphonia Gumboot. Her name alone is enough to send me into gigglefits every time I read it.
In this latest adventure, a dirigible bound for New York City is filled with twits and an assortment of relatives, servants, and of course - let me stifle myself - Miss Euphonia Gumboot. Drat, I giggled in spite of my precautions.
It's a fun, fast-reading romp of course, as a Steampunk Distraction should be. I absolutely adored the mockery of social media, performed in a manner only twits would attempt. The wordsmithery is, as always, above average. I read the story in one gulp and then returned to my comparatively humdrum life. I'm already thinking about when I'll be able to settle in with book 4.
