Scarlett had been groomed by her father from an early age. She was sexually abused y him when she was just eight years old. Whilst walking home from school, she is befriended by a young man called Ed. He tells her that his friend wants to meet her. She agrees and Ed takes her to his house. But theres nomfriend waiting to meet Scarlett. Ed is part of a vicious grooming gang.

This is quite a distressing book to read. We hear so much about sex trafficking, grooming, sexual abuse and the violence these women had to endure. This is Scarlett's own account of thena usage suffered from her father and Ed. There's also advice Scarlett would now give her eight year old self. The investigation into this case is still ongoing. What an inspirational read this is.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Mirror Books and the author Scarlett Jones for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Just a Girl by Scarlett Jones is the heartbreaking true account of a woman who was sexually abused from the age of eight at the hands of her own father. While this is horrific in and of itself, things get even worse for Scarlett when she manages to escape the evil clutches of her family, and falls into unimaginable circumstances when she meets Ed, a man whose actions are truly inconceivable.

This is a difficult read as the shocking details are presented truthfully and uncensored. The author seems oddly unemotional and detached for the most part, undoubtedly a survival technique that she has honed throughout her life. While this is an uncomfortable and deeply disturbing account, it is an important one as it serves to shine a spotlight on the growing epidemic that is violence and abuse against women. This is a truly brave story that most of us cannot even begin to fathom.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Mirror Books for this ARC.

As a survivor of CSA myself, I have been asked in the past why I read books like this one - surely they must distress me. My answer is this. The journey of abuse is a lonely one - both when you are in it and afterwards. Reading books such as this one makes survivors feel less alone.

Just a Girl is a well written account of Scarlett's life. What she lived through is incomprehensible. The fact she survived it all is quite frankly a miracle. I found elder Scarlett talking to little Scarlett very helpful in my own therapy journey.

The abuse at the hands of her own father was bad enough. The fact that in certain cultures in our country 'white' girls are still seen as worthless and are to be used purely for s&x is quite frankly disgusting - I applaud Scarlett on the work she is doing with Holly in trying to combat this.

This book will shock but what is even more shocking is that as a society we do not do more to stamp out the abuse and grooming of any girl or woman, regardless of their age.

This book was very sad just like most books about child abuse. Our main character, Scarlet has anything but a normal life. Verbally abused by her mother and sexually abused by her father Scarlet just doesn't know where to turn. What I found was very interesting and different about this book was our author when she talks about what happened to her as a child she then goes on small breaks and talks about how she feels looking back on it as an adult. It was very different from what I've read in other abuse cases but it puts small light breaks into what could have been a very dark and depressing read. I did find it very sad how Scarlet's mother didn't seem to notice or care that her daughter was being abused by her father. How could she let those terrible things happen to her own flesh and blood and not step in and do anything? It isn't long before Scarlet meets Ed and that is when the story really takes off. Very sad story but it was nice to see that there was a silver lining and just because terrible things happen to you in the past doesn't mean that you are destined for the kind of sorrow. So many terrible things happened to Scarlet both when she was living with her abuser but it also showed how the abuse doesn't always stop even though they are under different roofs. If you like books with sad events then this is one that you should check out. Thank you Scarlet Jones and Mirror books for allowing me to read this novel I enjoyed it very much.

This book is beyond heartbreaking about Scarlett’s abuse that she went through from a young age into her adult life. Such a brave woman to come out and tell her story and raise awareness of this ongoing abuse.

The book was written very well but of course hard to read because of the content. Lots of trigger warnings.

Harrowing and honest with no filters. The author has had an awful time but has found her inner wisdom through herself and her children. It’s so shocking and depraved how humanity can be but thankfully this amazing human being has endured and shared her story which must have been somewhat therapeutic for her at times

Summary

Review
The book offers a raw and unflinching account of Jones's traumatic childhood, showcasing the physical, emotional, and psychological abuse she endured. Jones's writing is both powerful and vulnerable, drawing readers into her harrowing experiences with a vivid and often heart-wrenching narrative.

Jones does not shy away from detailing the brutal realities of her abuse, which makes the book both compelling and challenging to read. Her courage in sharing her story is admirable and adds significant weight to the memoir’s message about the impact of abuse and the resilience required to overcome it.

As a fellow victim of ińcêst/childhood SA, this book hit home so hard. I was never trafficked but I intentionally put myself in horrible situations acting like I had control when in reality, my abuser was still controlling me. I never really wanted to do the things I did. I was rǎped while intoxicated in 2018 and never got justice. No one believed me. Even though be allowed his friends to photograph my nude body afterwards. Those photos are still floating around. Hearing you finally get a semblance of justice all those years later, gives me hope that I will have the same, one day. Thank you for being brave enough to share your story Scarlett and for giving me the courage to possibly share mine one day.

There was nothing normal or loving for poor Scarlett as a young child, from the age of eight she was repeatedly raped by the man that was supposed to love and protect her , her father. As to be expected Scarlett grew up to be a very troubled vulnerable young lady and fell straight into the hands of another deadly predator.
Such a sad story that absolutely broke my heart at times yet I am awed at how brave this lady really is to share her story with others . A very difficult read at times but brilliantly written.

A tragic and shocking tale, and a compelling page turner.

Wow. Sometimes you read something and think; most of us just know nothing. The author of this terrible story is a similar age to me-in fact she's four years younger. But she's been through so much more than you could ever imagine.

She was named after the Gone with the Wind character, her mum was reading the book when she went into hospital to have her daughter. That all sounds so lovely. Her home life was anything but.

Unexpectedly, when you consider how her childhood was, her mum became a foster parent. But she's like no other foster carer you've read about before. Unbelievable, considering she hardly looked after her own flesh and blood.

Scarlett was just 8 when these unspeakable things were done to her. By her own father. It just beggars belief. And that was just the start. But sadly, you hear of this all too often, there are many such memoirs.

Written in a simple, conversational style, her tale just pours out and keeps you turning the pages, it all moves along quickly. A difficult read, of course; because of the content, shocking, graphic. But sometimes you're just drawn to these memoirs. To try to understand. Of course, you never can. And to marvel how people get through such terrible times like this. You're compelled to read on, just hoping things will be better and come right for her one day. So many things happen to her. There's so much to overcome. So brave that she's told her story, and is now helping others.

The first words that come to mind when I think about what I want to say about Just A Girl are...... horrific, shocking and heartbreaking. But then a moment later and I think.... strength, determination and resilience. This book is the story of Scarlett and the horrendous abuse that she suffered for many years. She was abused in probably every way possible. She grew up being abused so much so that she thought it was normal to be treated like that, she actually expected it! No child asks to be abused, no teenager asks to be abused, and no adult asks to be abused. The fact that it continues to happen in society is sickening and yes, they are incredibly difficult to read. But I personally think it's all to easy for some people to ignore it and pretend that things like this don't happen in their world. So memoirs like this are important to raise awareness of what some people suffer through. But I also think they are important as they show other people who have been or are being abused that there is hope, that things can get better, that they can survive and rise out of the hell that they are in.
I can't imagine having to go through what Scarlett has or how brave she has had to be over the years. She has done a wonderful job with detailing what she went through in a raw and honest way. At the end of each chapter was a section written by Scarlett in the current day where she tells young Scarlett what she wishes she could have been told back then. Her journey from hell to the inspirational woman she is today is amazing.

Just a Girl is a shocking true story about Child Abuse and when all you know is the abuse inflicted by someone who is meant to love and protect you. Scarlett tells the story of her horrific childhood and the abuse that began at 8 years old at the hands of her father. After many years of horrific child abuse from her father on the way home from school Scarlett meets a boy, he takes her to a house and rapes her, although she thinks this is normal and that he likes her and wants to be her boyfriend. He grooms her into believing that they loves each other and introduces men for her to have sex with. This is the story of how she overcame the abuse she had been subjected to since 8 years old. Her family made me so angry throughout. I honestly couldn't believe as well that her father's girlfriend chose to ignore what Scarlett had said and say she was marrying him and that she was lying. Why in the world would someone pretend that their father was abusing them if it wasn't true?! There were so many times where I questioned why she hadn't told anyone, but I can understand now that as she was so young she had been manipulated into believing it was normal.

Scarlett Jones (not her real name) is an incredible woman and amazing, talented author. Her start in life was so sad, a mother who doesn’t appear to want, or be capable of loving her children, and a paternal family rife with child sexual abusers. Scarlett was groomed by her father from an early age and the sexual abuse started age when she was just eight years old. It is no wonder that she did not know what a healthy relationship should be, and was targeted by another abusive man and fell prey to more child sexual exploitation which is now part of the ongoing investigation in Telford.
The book is written in such a touching way with Scarlett writing as she recalls her memories as a child and interspersing this with advice she would now give the child Scarlett. It really is a wonderful book, full of hope and shows how women in Scarlett’s position can not only survive, but actually thrive.
I wish Scarlett all the very best for the future.

Truly amazing inspirational story.

Unfortunately there are so many of these stories and I hope one day with enough time and effort there will a drastic change in domestic abuse ect but for now we can only admire the ones who manage to get out.
I read this book in four hours, it spoke to me because I had similar background. The pure emotions within this book is astounding. I would recommend this book to anyone. It truly is inspiring to see such a woman come through with some light still left inside her. Unlike some books she knows you can never fully get over the past abuse be it physically, mentally or emotionally. You can only learn to cope with it, it will always be there but it doesn’t have to be your whole life. You can have love and happiness.
This book will give you hope.

This is a haunting memoir told with unerring honesty and candour. What Scarlett has endured, at the hands of her father, her boyfriend, her community, extended family and then the family courts and judicial system is quite simply unimaginable. Were this a novel reviewers may say it was too much, too unbelievable but this is Scarlett’s life and a life she has put to incredibly good use by her involvement in The Holly Project providing an enquiry into CSE in Telford and to help other young victims of CSE. Where so many would have, quite forgivably, buckled under the weight of so much trauma Scarlett has fought back, been an excellent mother and now will help all those other ‘little Scarletts’
The more women have the courage to come forward and the more organisations commit to tackling it, we can work towards ridding our towns and cities of sex trafficking and child sexual exploitation.

This book is probably one of the most horrific types of these books I have ever read, and it is one that will stay with me for a long long time.
Scarlett was groomed by her father from a very young age, and the abuse started at the age of 8. Reading what she went through at the hands of her dad was heartbreaking to read but sadly it didn't stop there.
She met a guy called Ed who she fell in love with, but he was possibly worse than her dad with the treatment she endured at the hands of him.

Although it's a horrific account of her entire life, it's important to read what's going on - especially as an Older Scarlett tells us just how common this is even now.
At the end of each chapter , the Scarlett of today comments offering the old Scarlett advice - it's almost as if she sees her younger self as being someone else.
Honestly a heartbreaking story, but very well written.

I read this in one sitting. its a very sad survival story. Scarlett was a child who's mother was at best cold at least brutal and beat her kids often. Her father always decided she was her princess and though her sister and brother got treated badly, Scarlett was always treated as special.
This led to abuse sexual abuse by her father so Scarlett tries to avoid home. When she was a teenager she meets Ed a Pakistani man who lived in a part of town that was not a place for white people to go.When Scarlett meets him she thinks it is love all he wants is sex.
time goes on and he starts to prostitute her to people keeping the money for himself. Her life spirals out of control pregnancy follows and Ed starts beating her. She knows life has to change.
A brilliant book that i could not put down

I finished this book In a day as i couldn't start it and put it down as a needed to know what happened to Scarlett. This is a harrowing read but it is so important to get this message out there about abuse ,grooming and sex trafficking.
Scarlett was and is so brave, she is a true survivor and I hope it gives others hope that they too can get help and survive. I feel truly humbled and it makes other problems feel insignificant in comparison. God bless you for sharing your story to help others.

I have so much admiration for this women

When I first started reading this I wondered why I was reading it. They is so much graphic detail in this to the point it felt I was reading it from my own point of view. This book made me feel physically sick and I cried so much. But I'm so glad I read it to the end. Scarlett you are not just a girl, you are a fighter, a survivor even a warrior.

Thank to Mirror Books and Net Galley for this early release. A deeply moving and disturbing story that opened my eyes to the sorts of abuse that can go on behind closed doors. I’ve read a few memoirs about neglect and abuse in the past, but this was by far the most outrageous and harrowing I have read to date. I felt like the cycle would never end for Scarlett and found myself praying for her to overcome everything life had thrown at her.

This was a heartbreakingly sad read. Scarlett experienced so much no child should ever have to, but sadly this is far from being the case, even today.

It's a difficult read due to the content. It's graphic and shocking.
Not a book for everyone, but an important one to know what others have experienced, or are experiencing, highlighting child sexual exploitation.
Scarlett's journey.

Difficult to say it was a ‘good’ read as it makes me so sad and angry as society lets these girls down.
This happened way before any of the big court cases and she was ignored! Even the police took advantage, an authority these girls should be able to readout too 😢.
Well done Scarlett, these men are pure evil and none of it was your fault.
You are such an inspiration, keep doing what you are doing, making a difference.

Heartbreaking book, telling the mental and physical abuse of Scarlett, by her father and boyfriend.
Not a light read by any means, made me cry several times and took me longer to read than most books as I had to mentally prepare myself.
That said, a well told story and an important read for anyone who wants to understand the feelings the abused.

This is one of the most heartbreaking, yet addictive books I’ve read in a long time. It’s not for the faint hearted. Telling the story of how she is abused by her father and then groomed by a ‘boyfriend’. This is certainly a book I’ll be sharing with my student teachers, as they learn about child protection.
