Warren Buffett is perhaps the most accomplished investor of all time. The CEO and chair of Berkshire Hathaway has earned admiration for not only his financial feats but also the philosophy behind them. Todd A. Finkle provides striking new insights into Buffett’s career through the lens of entrepreneurship. This book demonstrates that although Buffett is thought of primarily as an investor, one of the secrets to his success has been running Berkshire as an entrepreneur.
Finkle—a Buffett family friend—shares his perspective on Buffett’s early life and business ventures. The book traces the entrepreneurial paths that shaped Buffett’s career, from selling gum door-to-door during childhood to forming Berkshire Hathaway and developing it into a global conglomerate through the imaginative deployment of financial instruments and creative deal making. Finkle considers Buffett’s investment methodology, management strategy, and personal philosophy on building a rewarding life in terms of entrepreneurship. He also zeros in on Buffett’s longtime business partner, Charlie Munger, and his contributions to Berkshire’s success. Finkle draws key lessons from Buffett’s mistakes as well as his successes, using these failures to explore the ways behavioral biases can affect investors and how to overcome them.
By viewing Buffett as an entrepreneur, this book offers readers a fresh take on one of the world’s best-known financial titans.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I have mad respect for the Oracle of Omaha henceforth. Todd Finkle does a great job of narrating Warren's life and his entrepreneur journey. It was wonderful to discover his journey and his nuggets was very insightful. I enjoyed learning about the man, his philosophies, values and I recommend this book to novice investors and beginners alike.
This book should jump to the top of anyone’s reading list that has an interest in Warren Buffet or wants a fresh take on his life story. With clear language and personal anecdotes, Todd A. Finkle easily makes connections between Warren Buffet’s early life and the ripple effect that it had on the creation of Berkshire Hathaway. Finkle deviates from traditional Buffet books with his exploration into Charlie Munger, highlighting the importance of finding the right partner. With information like this, Buffet’s “Secret Sauce,” and tips for investing, this book is great for anyone fascinated by the subject of the title, finances, or entrepreneurship.
This "National Award-Winning Book" is one of the most up-to-date biographies on Warren Buffett. The classic book is part biography, part investment methodology, part Buffett's entrepreneurial ventures throughout his life, and part lessons learned through Buffett and the people who have influenced him throughout his life. The book has three chapters devoted to his investment methodology and how Buffett has altered it over time from Benjamin Graham to Phil Fisher and Charlie Munger. In one of the best aspects of the book, Finkle looks at two case studies on GEICO and Apple, Inc. He goes through the history of Berkshire Hathaway's purchase of Apple beginning in 2016 and looks at the reasons why he purchased Apple both qualitative and quantitative. He does something more that I haven't read in other Buffett books, he takes you through step-by-step on how to vale Apple by looking at all of the financial ratios and numbers. Not only that, but the way he approaches the valuation allows anyone with any background to understand how to do this. He defines all of the variables and takes you through how to do everything. It's awesome. That alone is worth buying this book. He also has a whole chapter devoted to 21 of Buffett's "INVESTMENT MISTAKES". Finkle realizes that Buffett is not perfect and had made several major investment mistakes in his life. So, he devoted a whole chapter to this and not only that he wrote another chapter on behavioral biases. This chapter is incredibly important because it takes you through the history of behavioral finance and looks at seven of the biggest behavioral biases that affect our investment decision making. Finkle then looks at these and applies them to Buffett's INVESTMENT MISTAKES and attributes the reason why he has done this. Another very important chapter is on Buffett's investment mistakes. While most people think Buffett is a genius and he certainly is, Dr. Finkle examined 21 of Buffett's biggest investment mistakes. He also talks about the behavioral biases that contributed to them. This allows readers to learn from Buffett's mistakes. Other areas that the book focuses on included: The history of Berkshire Hathaway, Charlie Munger, Fintech (digital currencies, blockchain, cryptocurrencies). Dr. Todd Finkle grew up in Omaha with the Buffetts. He went to high school with Peter, his brother knew Howard, and he interviewed Susie Buffett for the book. Dr. Finkle has also been out to lunch with Buffett three times, which he talks about and gives first-hand information in the book. Dr. Finkle examines the Buffett family's roots going back to Europe. He then examines Warren Buffett's childhood. He examines how the Great Depression had such a negative impact on the Buffett family...especially Warren. Throughout the book, Dr. Finkle integrates information about entrepreneurship, investments, and Buffett's values on how to live a better life. Dr. Finkle emphasizes that people don't realize that Buffett is indeed an entrepreneur. The book examines how Buffett utilized his entrepreneurial behavior through various ventures throughout his life. From selling coke and gum door-to-door, to co-founding a pinball company, to ventures in college, to founding an investment partnership, to creating innovative investment deals through Berkshire Hathaway. Entrepreneurship has been the centerpiece of his life. As an added bonus, Dr. Finkle, who is an expert in entrepreneurship, talks about how the reader can become an entrepreneur like Buffett. He also examines the motivations for being an entrepreneur and what the most successful entrepreneurs did. Another valuable aspect of the book is how Dr. Finkle talks about the people that had the biggest impact on Buffett's life; His wife, Susie, his father Howard, grandfather, Earnest, Dale Carnegie, Ben Graham, Phil Fisher, Charlie Munger, Tom Murphy and others. There are great lessons for all of us about the importance of having positive role models in your life. There is also an in-depth chapter on Charlie Munger, which I really enjoyed. He reviews Charlie's background, education, entrepreneurial ventures, keys to success and philanthropy. Perhaps one of the most valuable chapters in the book is where he examines Behavioral Biases. According to Buffett & Munger, this is more important than valuation. Dr. Finkle reviews the history of behavioral finance and gives seven examples of the most prevalent forms of biases (e.g., herding bias and talking heads bias). He discusses them, gives real world examples, and shares with the reader how to overcome these to increase your financial returns. Other topics in the book include two chapters on the history of Berkshire Hathaway, a chapter on Dr. Finkle's six personal visits with Buffett and his experiences attending the past 14 Shareholder's Meetings (excluding COVID), lessons on how to live your life, philanthropy, and happiness. The final chapter looks at fintech, cryptocurrencies (Charlie's favorite) and digital currencies. It also discusses the critiques of Buffett and talks about the returns of Berkshire over the past decade versus the S&P 500. In summary, this is an excellent well thought out and well-written book that should be part of anyone's library, especially for people who have a desire to learn about investments, entrepreneurship, and how to live a better life. The book has made a significant impact on my finances and personal life...allowing me to learn from Buffett's life lessons to become a better person. Also, it is published by Columbia University Press, a quality publisher.
A High Bar For The Buffett Fan In Your Life Having been a student of Dr. Todd A, Finkle’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation course at Gonzaga University, with the honor to have attended the 2012 Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting with a select few as a student in the course, I know from experience that Dr. Finkle is the consummate expert on all things Buffett.
In his latest book, Warren Buffett, Investor and Entrepreneur, the reader gets a deep dive of the origins of Warren’s early life and influences, his key learnings, the origins of his partnership with Charlie Munger, and every step thereafter that has led The Oracle of Omaha to be revered as one of the investment world’s most prolific minds. This book is a must read for any fans interested in the past, present, and future of Berkshire Hathaway.
As a reader, I appreciated Todd’s approach to telling the story of Buffett. He cue’s the audience in on key insights and details that previous written histories may have missed – and shares comments that he feels help to explain more about the person (both in the spotlight and in everyday life) that Buffett is today.
The material is relatable – and you quickly realize that most of the commentary Todd provides is grounded in first-hand knowledge from his opportunities to connect with and learn from Buffett on-on-one. The supporting details he shares come from direct interviews with those in Berkshire Hathaway’s orbit, from meticulously cited research papers, and, of course, from the published articles and analytics available to all shareholders.
Upon reflection, I consider this book to be one of the most approachable guides to the life learnings and wisdom of Warren Buffett that I have found yet. I recommend that any interested casual fan or scholar pre-order a copy for their own collection.
Mr. Finkely does an excellent job on the biography about Warren Buffett. It not only goes into where he started from but also how he became a wealthy man and at the same time kept his integrity and his values. I have admired and followed Warren Buffett for years and am amazed how open he is to teaching people how they can invest in the stock market too. I liked how the book showed Mr. Buffett seek people who he admired and surrounded himself with people who cared and admired him, not for his wealth but what he represents. I like that he takes responsibility when he screws up and he tries to learn from his mistake. I also admire him for try to give to other and living humbly.
This book is very easy to read and follow, it does repeat itself slightly but you will learn a lot about Warren Buffett and what he thinks is important in living a excellent life.
I want to thank Columbia University Press, Columbia Business School Publishing and NetGalley for this book about a unique individual who I admire a lot.
Warren Buffett, by Dr. Todd Finkle, is a highly readable and informative account of the life, character, investment philosophy, and business acumen of one of the most eminent entrepreneurs in history. Finkle’s keen insights on Buffett’s life, and his impact on the business world, are derived from his extensive research of secondary documents along with his first-hand familiarity with Omaha and the Buffett family. The book blends a deep knowledge of finance and entrepreneurship theory with the practical experience, wisdom and values that formed the foundation for Buffett’s success as an investor, entrepreneur, and leader of Berkshire Hathaway. Particularly enlightening are the descriptions of potential behavioral biases in making investment decisions and Buffett’s willingness to admit and learn from his mistakes. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in finance, entrepreneurship, or just simply, inspiring business leaders. Paul Buller, PhD
This book is a good read if you are interested in other's professional life. Warren Buffett is a significant figure in business and investment arena and this book is write in a special way. The book is a good mix of personal author's experience with Buffett as well as some information from other sources. I have really enjoyed reading and learned a lot for my professional and personal development.
"Warren Buffett: Investor and Entrepreneur" is a wonderful examination of the life, philosophy, and investment methods of Warren Buffett, and the disciplines of investing/finance and entrepreneurship as a whole. Author Todd Finkle uses Buffett’s words and examples to offer practical advice on everything from day-to-day living and virtue to how to be an investor rather than a speculator. Finkle shows the process by which Buffett became an entrepreneur from his youth through adulthood. From working in Buffett’s grandfather’s grocery store to selling tip sheets at the local racetrack, to investing in the stock market before his twelfth birthday, to becoming a millionaire in his mid-twenties, Finkle shows that Buffett was always a hustler. Finkle shows Buffett the entrepreneurial superhero who, when he was still in college, travelled across several states just to knock on GEICO’s door and inquire about their business model. However, there is also Buffett the endearing math nerd, and Buffett the avid reader. Finkle presents a portrait of Buffett that is surprisingly relatable, a man who in his early years was so inspired by Dale Carnegie, the author of "How to Win Friends and Influence People," that he keeps a certificate from Carnegie’s class on his office wall to this day. Readers also get a glimpse into the world of Charlie Munger, Buffett’s wise and wisecracking business partner, and into the corporate history of Berkshire Hathaway, from its humble pre-Buffett beginnings as a New England-based textile manufacturer to its present status as one of the world’s largest holding companies. Investors will learn about Buffett’s quantitative and qualitative (scuttlebutt) value investment strategy, and his method of valuing a company through a modified DCF analysis. Experienced investors will find something to challenge their thinking (e.g. “Diversification is overrated”!), while beginning investors will find the book an accessible introduction to the world of finance. In fact, professors of both finance and ethics, as well as entrepreneurship, should consider using Finkle’s book as a teaching tool. Warren Buffett serves as a useful and relatable tool to instruct the reader on money matters and on other aspects of life. "Warren Buffett: Investor and Entrepreneur" is a definite buy!
Many thanks to Netgalley, Columbia University Press and Finkle for this inspiring copy.
Warren Buffett undoubtedly is one of the well-known, the most respective and inspiring entrepreneurs. There are various of books about Warren Buffett and this is the one I would recommend.
The author Todd A. Finkle has presented Warren Buffett's life in a comprehensive way. Finkle is Buffett's family friend, therefore the perspective of this book will be on Buffett's early life and his business ventures. It composes Buffett's early life, his secret formula, the history of his company Berkshire Hathaway and his life advice.
I admire Buffett, before being the CEO & Chair of Berkshire Hathaway which was founded in 1964, he demonstrated his entrepreneurial hunger when he was 11 year-old. He had his first stock back then in 1942. The book also shared his investment ideas, his lifelong mentor, his investment methodology and for sure investment knowledge behind.
When I read this book, I have been understanding more about the financial world and the key to success based on Warren Buffett's entrepreneurial hunger. Being humble, gentle and generous is the beginning to success. He also advised, "if you keep track of your mistakes, it is possible to identify blind spots and correct for them."
If you can only read an inspirational investment book, "Warren Buffett - Investor and Entrepreneur" by Todd A. Finkle is the one I would recommend. Such a fascinating read!
New and interested in investing? Curious to know about the one of the most successful investor and entrepreneur Warren Buffett? Want to know the investing strategies Buffett followed? Look no further than Todd A. Finkle's 'Warren Buffet'. This book is a treasure chest of knowledge and it has all the more value and intimacy because Finkle is Buffett's family friend. Buffett's childhood and growth inspires the reader.
The biography is arranged in a chronological manner is also well separated into categories to detail the different phases of Buffett's investing journey - lessons from mentor Graham, friendship and partnership with Charlie Munger, Berkshire Hathaway etc., There is something for everyone in the book. If one doesn't want to be bothered with the numbers, they can still takeaway tips and points on various aspects like what one should look for in a partner, how one should view a company etc.,
The book in a nutshell is about investing ideologies (like scuttlebutt approach, value investing), influences on Buffett and an analysis on Buffett's successes and failures. Highly recommended for anyone interested in investing and Warren Buffett.
I just reviewed Warren Buffett by Todd A. Finkle. #WarrenBuffett #NetGalley
I am a 72-year-old man from a small railroad town in Montana. I have always looked at life from a blue-collar perspective even though I have earned a master’s degree and advanced in my public service and teaching professions. I was introduced to mutual fund investing in 1980 as part of a financial planning program with a pragmatic theme of ‘pay yourself first’. My wife of 50 years and I are avid readers, and she has been my partner in all decision-making regarding our plan. We both read this book. I was very interested in Todd Finkle’s book on Warren Buffett because I was tangentially aware of Buffett’s success and his penchant for what I see as a blue-collar approach to investing. Todd brought alive a kinship with Buffett in some of his early life experiences. Many of the book’s ‘keys to success’ were interesting reiterations from mentors in my life. Buffett’s investment advice to retail investors is invaluable. Todd Finkle has captured the ‘Oracle of Omaha’ in a unique way that benefits anyone who is interested in Buffet and his success, whether from an autobiographical or financial perspective. The book is a great read! Add it to your reading list as part of the ‘read all the time’ investment advice in the book.
This book creatively captures the life, mind, and philosophy of perhaps the most influential and successful investor in modern-day history. As a reader, one cannot help but feel inspired to grasp the same motivational seed within themselves as Warren Buffett found and utilized throughout his entire life.
Learning about the perspective and background of Charlie Munger perfectly complements the larger picture of how Berkshire Hathaway has succeeded since it’s origin and provides an often unseen other side of the story. This additional perspective truly adds a unique element to this story that provides the reader a greater perspective that is not seen in other pieces about Buffet.
This book provides a complete, in-depth perspective on Warren Buffett based off the multiple first hand interactions that Todd Finkle has had over the last decade; and it truly provides the reader with a different investing philosophy by final page. I could not recommend this book more to someone looking to build a strong investing foundation based off simple reasoning, all while learning about Buffett at the same time.
We knew this book would be educational, but we had no idea it would be so entertaining. What a great read! Dr. Todd Finkle has managed to provide invaluable insights into one of the most unique and successful entrepreneurs in the history of the world. Just when you think everything has already been written about one of the world’s wealthiest men, Dr. Finkle has uncovered fascinating new perspectives about the legend known as the “Oracle of Omaha.” Warren Buffett has shown us that success is so much more than just the accumulation of wealth and Dr. Finkle has brilliantly given us the roadmap to those life lessons. We certainly would recommend this book to anyone interested in finance, but we also highly recommend it to anyone who is in pursuit of a better life. It’s a must-read and we could not put it down!!
Excellent book and one of my top book picks of the year. I wish this book had been around years ago as it is not only educational and enlightening but has helped me become a more savvy investor.
This book is fascinating look at Warren Buffet and provides insight into one of the most successful entrepreneurs and investors of our time. Finkle takes the reader through Buffet’s life from a young man to the present, through failures and successes, and leaves the reader feeling as though they know the man or wish they did. Buffet is a fascinating character whose wisdom and knowledge are shared throughout the book. The book is a primer on leadership, entrepreneurship, and decision making.
This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend. Previously, I feel I made an absolutely right choice to take Dr. Finkle's classes and now I have chances to read his books. The other book that I read and would also highly recommend is "Lessons Learned From Leading Entrepreneurs". I am a technical person and these books have significantly changed my thoughts in a much more flexible and positive way when I approach many matters in life. For sure, I will wait for more books written by Dr. Finkle.
An excellent read on the world's greatest investor and entrepreneur. This book provides a unique perspective on Buffett as a person, his strategies and decision making around investments, and building Berkshire Hathaway. Thoughtfully organized and well written by the author as he takes the readers through Buffett's successes and learnings along his life journey through entrepreneurship and business.
I have been an admirer of Buffett for many years and looked forward to reading Finkles' book on him and his life. The author has obviously studied his subject well as he provides much detail which provides a real insight into the man. For anyone interested in investing, this is your go to book. Otherwise this is a great book about a great man. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance copy of Warren Buffett. Highly recommended.
The author draws from his experiences and interactions with the Buffett family while living in their neighborhood and attending the same school. The book goes deep into what the author calls "Buffett's Secret Sauce" in blending investing and entrepreneurship into a legendary career. A must read for anyone interested in the Oracle of Omaha.
Dr Todd Finkle has produced a book giving useful insight into the “Oracle of Omaha’s” amazing success both as an investor and businessman but also as a citizen, family man and philanthropist. This biography includes Buffett’s history, approach to investing, mistakes along the way and lessons learned.
Warren Buffett: Investor and Entrepreneur is a fascinating read of the many facets of his life from childhood to the present. Anyone who is interested in learning about Buffett’s life, financial theories and philosophy should definitely read this book. I highly recommend it.
Any person with an inkling of business sense knows the name Warren Buffett. And just about every detail of his life has been incorporated into numerous books and almost daily news articles. However, Todd Finkle’s book gives us three key insights lacking in most other Buffett biographies. This gives readers almost first-hand access into the brains behind the Berkshire Hathaway empire. The first key in this book is learning about the importance of Buffett’s right-hand man, Charlie Munger. Though they were both Omaha boys, Buffett and Munger’s paths didn’t cross until well into adulthood, and their friendship began when they realized how much they liked laughing at their own jokes. This is crucial in understanding the great sense of humor and breeziness that Munger (and Buffett, too) bring to Berkshire Hathaway. Above all, Munger taught Buffett that it makes more sense to buy great companies at a good price, undoing many decades of Buffett’s original method of buying declining companies at a great price. Munger also ensures that Berkshire Hathaway’s investors understand behavioral finance, thus avoiding many mental fallacies that beleaguer the average investor. The second key is what I call the holy grail of this book – Finkle shows us how exactly Berkshire Hathaway invests. No, Buffett and Munger don’t use calculus or advanced algorithms for their financial analysis. They simply use the discounted cash flow method, which should be taught in any finance class above the introductory level. We see two case studies in which the discounted cash flow method can be used to invest in two major companies, and the methodology is very accessible even to the non-business majors. The third key is that Finkle brings a personal touch by sharing his stories about interacting with Buffett directly. Though he grew up in Omaha and went to school with one of the Buffett kids, Finkle never mentioned he was a direct family friend (as another reviewer incorrectly pointed out). Finkle received no favors and had to compete with dozens of professors across the USA for a chance to bring his students to spend time with Buffett. Finkle managed to do this in two separate occasions, and we get a glimpse into the lessons Buffett gave to Finkle’s students. This book should inspire anyone with passion to become an entrepreneur and to view investing as an entrepreneur’s duty. A must-read in this 2023 bear market, which is a goldmine for investing in great companies at a steep discount.
This is simply an awesome book. It not only broadens your knowledge in the investment field but also helps you perceive the world from a new perspective—the perspective of Warren Buffett. Wealth is rarely a reward for pure hard work, but rather a natural byproduct of knowledge, wisdom, and courage. Working hard is important; what's more important is the right direction. This book explains in detail what the right direction is, in terms of making investments, building up personal reputation, and navigating difficult periods in life. It is a highly valuable book for young readers.
For more experienced readers and financial professionals, this book provides in-depth explanations of investment philosophies in an intriguing way. It offers vivid cases that help readers understand the nuances of Buffett's decision-making process. The book even carefully examines the mistakes Buffett has made, allowing you to stand on the giant's shoulders when making future decisions.
It is an inspiring book for all. Dr. Finkle analyzes Buffett from an innovative angle—the angle of entrepreneurship. The book reveals how Buffett built his business from scratch, earned the trust of investors and business partners, and successfully guided a mega business through economic turmoil. Through Buffett's attitude toward investment, business, friends, and life, we begin to understand why, despite his extreme success, Buffett remains interesting and humble. Through the lens of Dr. Finkle, we learn why Buffett donated billions of dollars to charity and dedicated significant time and effort to coaching young people. As illustrated by Buffett, making a contribution to society and mankind is much more interesting than showing off one's wealth.
I am very thankful to have the opportunity to read this book. Highly recommend it!!

By viewing Buffett as an entrepreneur, this book offers readers a fresh take on one of the world’s best-known financial titans.
I decided to read this book as more of an introduction into Warren Buffett's life and mindset, before jumping into the Roger Lowenstein and Alice Schroeder biographies. This book provided that introduction well, but there was also a lot of repetition throughout that often made me feel I was rereading the wrong page.
The book is divided into 4 sections: Part I: Early Life Part II: Buffett's Secret Sauce Part III: The History of Berkshire Hathaway Part IV: Warren Buffett: The Person
I enjoyed the chapters more focused on Buffett personally and his mindset. I would have preferred the chapter on Buffett's Mistakes to have given more detail on how those investment mistakes could have been avoided if at all possible, rather than a simple descriptions of the mistakes he had made.
Overall I would recommend this book to someone new to Buffett and his style of investing.
I received my copy of this book from NetGalley in return of an honest review.
"Despite past statements about the unseemliness of buying back shares to boost the price of stock, this is precisely what Buffett has done in recent years. And it has indeed helped. In 2020 and 2021, Berkshire bought back $24.7 billion and $27 billion worth of its stock."
The above excerpt from the book reveals an embarrassing lack of understanding of Berkshire, Buffett, and capital allocation. If it were a one-off that would be one thing, but it was one of many.
This book would have received a 1-star rating if it were not for a handful of "new" Buffett anecdotes. "New" in the sense that I have not previously encountered them in the many other books on Buffett.
Todd A. Finkle’s Warren Buffett: Investor and Entrepreneur offers a fresh look at Buffett—not just as a legendary investor, but as a savvy entrepreneur. Finkle highlights how Buffett’s early ventures and long-term thinking helped shape Berkshire Hathaway into a business empire. The book also explores his partnership with Charlie Munger and the values that drive his success.
Overall, I found the book to be a compelling and accessible biography that reframes Warren Buffett as not just an investor, but a masterful entrepreneur. Ideal for readers interested in business, investing, or personal development.
This book is not just for investors and financial advisors, it is for everyone to read. Dr. Finkle has written an easy to read book that transforms Warren Buffet’s philosophy into life lessons for all of us to emulate and imitate.
Finkle’s close association with the Buffet family and similar Midwest upbringing allows him to describe and analyze Mr. Buffet in terms that other authors have not been fortunate enough to elucidate.
Don’t hesitate on this publication, purchase it and devour it, you will be a better person even if you adopt only one of Mr. Buffet’s recommendations.
Many books have been written about Warren Buffett, one of most accomplished investors of our time. Most are exclusively focused on his investment tactics. In this well-researched, comprehensive biography, Prof. Todd Finkle - a native of Omaha himself - tells a detailed account of the life, family, friendships, values, investment style and decisions (biggest accomplishments and failures) of the "Oracle of Omaha".
This book is a must read for those who want to have a more holistic view of both the man and the entrepreneur.
