As the sheet was pulled away, Harlow started to get a picture of her victim. Looking down at her alabaster skin, flowing blonde hair and striking cheekbones, it was not hard to see why she was known as the sweetheart of this town. But as Harlow’s eyes scanned down to the purple bruising around her neck, it was clear that someone wanted her dead.

When the body of sixteen-year-old Mazie Winters is discovered on the site of an abandoned farm, the small and tight-knit community of New Paltz in upstate New York is rocked to its core and Detective Harlow Durant is called in immediately to investigate.

Harlow’s partner Lucas Park is already working at Ackert Farm on a cold case, identifying human remains found in a cellar. Looking out at the desolate farmland, Harlow can’t help but think that dumping Mazie’s body on the site of an active crime scene is a warning: leave the remains in the past or more innocent lives will be lost.

Searching old farm records and interviewing previous owners, Harlow discovers that no one ever stayed long: the ground appeared to be cursed and owners soon moved on. The only shred of evidence is of teens heading into the vast network of woods to hear the supposed cries of women, presumed to be the ghosts of the past. But were those screams real?

As Harlow pieces together a picture of Mazie: a loving daughter of the local pastor who spent her weekends singing in the church choir, she is called to an abandoned outhouse hidden in the woods. Forcing open the door, she is shocked to find the remains of two women. But the case soon becomes personal as Lucas recognizes the necklace found on one of the bodies.

Could the remains be linked to the tragic disappearance of Lucas’s mother decades before? And when another teenager vanishes, Harlow senses history repeating itself. With a killer at large, Harlow knows that time is running out to catch the killer and bring justice to Lucas’s family. But how far will the killer go to cover up their darkest crime?

Their Final Cry (Detective Harlow Durant Book 3) by Dea Poirier

Their Final Cry is a gripping mystery. This is the third book in the Detective Harlow Durant series and is intense. I read it as a stand-alone and enjoyed it immensely.

Synopsis:
Harlow Durant and her partner Lucas Park team up to solve the murder of 16-year-old Mazie Winters. Throughout her life, Mazie has been loved by the small farming community of New Paltz, New York, where she lived. Can Harlow and Lucas solve this case before someone else is murdered?

I was totally wrapped up in the emotional aspects of the main protagonists, Harlow and Lucas. The drama of a small town murder is earth shattering, but Their Final Cry also digs into the background of the two main characters. The result is shocking and kept me deeply invested in the story. This is my first book by Dea Poirier and I am hooked on the author. I highly recommend this novel for psychological thriller enthusiasts.

Their Final Cry by Dea Poirier is available October 17th.

Detective Harlow Durant and her partner Lucas Park are going to be working on different cases, but somehow they eventually just might connect. For Harlow, the body of 16-year-old Mazie Winters has been discovered, and it doesn’t take long before even more bodies are found. For Lucas, he is working on a case involving bodies that were found in a cellar, a case that had turned cold years ago.

Since the bodies were found at an abandoned farm, Harlow tries to find the farms’s owners. One thing she finds almost immediately is that the farm had more than one owner, and this was in rapid succession. More than that, there have been rumors that something had been going on at that farm, and now Harlow is determined to find answers.

This case reaches deep for both Harlow and Lucas. Harlow cannot help but remember her disturbing past and Lucas also is reminded of a great loss that he has never found closure for. Both Harlow and Lucas work vigorously to put the pieces of these difficult cases together, and time appears to be running out.

This excellent third book in the Detective Harlow Durant series is both mysterious and fast-paced. As Harlow’s past disturbs her more and more as the series progresses, we just get to know more about what she experienced as a child. This book also gives insight into Lucas’s tragic past as well. Even so, this book would work well as a standalone and is one that should not be missed. Dea Poirier has whet my appetite for the fourth book in the series, especially after the intriguing cliffhanger ending.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The perfect police procedural....possibly.
It's not often that I burn through the pages at the rate that I did with this book. I could see the last page coming up in a couple of hours and couldn't turn them quickly enough, but neither did I want it to end. By far, it's the best in the series and let's not forget, the bar was set high in the previous two books.
Police procedurals often get dull with boring station politics, too many higher ranking officers and convoluted side issues, but not this one. There's not a wasted word from beginning to end. Every page reveals an intelligent and plausible investigation by (thankfully, for once in this genre) two competent detectives that are actually likable with the strongest characterisation.
For me, the real meat on the bones of this story was the crime. It was cruel, horrific even, but without violence. Odd, but sadly, it's happened for real before. That, I suppose, is possibly why I found the plot so compelling. It's not an overly twisty story but when the twists are delivered, they're in the magnitude measured as bomb shells.
The ending, although perfect for setting up a fourth in the series, it did leave me thinking a further few pages would have been good. Don't take that as it was disappointing finale, far from it. It was simply a cliffhanger.
If this is your genre I recommend you bump this series to the top of your TBR list, today.

Rounded up from 4.5

This is the third in the Detective Harlow Durant series but can easily be read as a standalone.

After a long break, Harlow is called back by her boss to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in the same place skeletal remains are found. Yet more bodies come to light, this time Harlow's partner Lucas recognises the necklace one of the bodies is wearing. Could he finally get the answers he's been looking for about his mother's disappearance?

Another teenage girl goes missing, and it's a race against time to find the killer before they strike again.

I think this series is getting better and better!

Their Final Cry was packed with murder, mystery, twists and turns with plenty of high stakes for the detectives to deal with.

I still love the character of Harlow. She's smart, brave, yet still has a bit of a tough time letting go of her lone wolf tendencies. It's a shame that matter how much she tries, she can't quite put her past behind her, especially as nobody will let her forget she's the daughter of a notorious serial killer.

Her partner Lucas gets more of a starring role in this story and my heart honestly broke for him over his mother and grandmother's disappearance.

I don't want to say too much more in case I give away any spoilers, but I'm honestly still reeling from the ending of this book. I can't wait to see what the author will follow this up with!

If you're looking for a well written, well plotted crime thriller, I would highly recommend Their Final Cry to you.

Their Final Cry is the third book in the Detective Harlow Durant series. Like the previous books it deals with some pretty nasty crimes and it also reveals more of Harlow's turbulent childhood with her evil father and abusive mother. This time we also get a glimpse into the past of Harlow's partner, Lucas. The mystery surrounding his mother and grandmother's disappearance being thrown up.
I really enjoyed this latest instalment. There are a few things that I think you have to suspend belief with. I'm not sure that someone with a past such as Harlow's would be able to investigate crimes such as these, even if she were legally allowed, from a mental health point of view, it's far from ideal. Then there's Lucas' involvement in the current investigation, I'm sure that there's no way that he could possibly be involved and I think that with his closeness to Harlow, even that would be unlikely. It doesn't matter though, as their part in all of this is what really drives the story, both in this book and the overall story that we keep being given glimpses of.
I'm sure that there's more to come for Harlow, we certainly have plenty of questions about her story and it's clear that her father has still got a role to play. I'm looking forward to seeing how all of that unfolds.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and given voluntarily

A suspenseful, dark and intriguing plot is what you will get reading Their Final Cry.
As the cases start to stack up, Harlow and Lucas have their work cut out for them piecing together the past to the present. Because….how can they be connected after all these years?????
Harlow and Lucas both have their own personal demons they are trying to come to terms with. It will certainly test their relationship.
Their Final Cry is a gripping and unputdownable read that I could not stop reading.
A fast paced series I highly recommend.
You are left with a cliffhanger which makes me want the next book in the series to come now!

Book 3 in the Harlow Durant series.

Like the previous books in the series this follows the pattern of a current case interspersed with flashbacks from Harlow's past.

When a young girl's body is found dumped in front of an abandoned farmhouse Harlow and Lucas must decide if it's linked to a cold case they've been investigating. But how could it when the crimes happened decades apart.

This is another great page turner that kept me enthralled til that shocking ending. I cannot wait for the next one.

This is a great crime thriller.
Harlow is taking some time out but receives a phone call asking her to come back as her partner Lucas needs her.
Harlow knows Lucas can cope but is intrigued by the case.
Together they investigate a cold case and a recent murder at an old farmhouse.
Once they start asking questions, they seem to end up with more strands to the investigation.
They making a shocking discovery out in the woods which has repercussions for Lucas.
Harlow is struggling to push thoughts of her father aside and with some flashback chapters it’s clear to see why.
This is a great crime thriller that I really enjoyed.
I can’t wait for the next book after that ending….

Holy Cliff Hanger…

I can’t believe that’s how it ended. WHAT?!?!?

I need more…LUCAS. Oh no. I’m going to be very stressed out until the next book.

This was very fast paced with a lot going on. And I understand leaving threads open through series but man. That ending was not conducive to my peace of mind. 😳

Detective Harlow Durant needs to get it together and figure all this out…ASAP.

It would have been a 5 if I wasn’t left a shell of a woman at the end.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Their Final Cry, the third novel to feature New York State Detective Harlow Durant.

Harlow is called back from a sabbatical to the town of New Paltz, when the body of teenager Mazie Winters is found at a deserted farm. Her partner, Lucas Parks, is already there investigating the cold case of bodies found in the farm’s root cellar. The case gets close to home when more bodies are found in a hidden cabin and Lucas recognises the necklace one of them is wearing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Their Final Cry, which is a pulse pounding read, full of action and emotion. The investigation plays a role in the novel, but is more the glue that holds everything together than the main focal point. To that extent I found the conclusion to it rather anticlimactic and flat, but what happens before and after that is anything but.

The novel is mainly told from Harlow’s first person point of view and alternates between her present and 19 years ago when she discovers that her father is a serial killer. This dysfunctional childhood (her mother was abusive and her father mostly kind) explains her current personality, distrustful and distant. She has overcome this to a certain extent with Lucas, but is unable to emotionally support him when he needs it. They have some cracking rows in this novel and I loved every minute of the raw emotion as it seems so visceral and real. Who knew Lucas had it in him?

The investigation has a high body count and a lot of delving into old paperwork. It held my interest with developments at every turn, often raising more questions than answers. If the excitement of the case weren’t enough, it seems like there is a serial cop killer on the loose, so there is heightened danger there too. I assume that this will be developed more in future novels as it is background noise in this one. And if all that isn’t enough the novel ends in a cliffhanger. I don’t think the author will be able to write fast enough to satisfy my curiosity about that. Bring it on.

Their Final Cry is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Harlow Durant is taking some much-needed time for herself. But when she gets a call that her partner, Lucas Park, needs her, she heads back to New York, to the small upstate town of New Paltz, where Mazie Winters has been murdered and her body deposited on a seemingly unrelated crime scene. But as Harlow and Lucas begin to dig into Mazie’s murder, they start to question whether her death and the cold case Lucas has been working on are related after all. Their investigation opens old wounds for Lucas, whose mother disappeared years earlier and who was never found.

I liked The Girls in the Fire, second in this series. Their Final Cry is even better! The story unfolds mostly through Harlow’s eyes, going between present day and her childhood nineteen years earlier. We see more of what she went through growing up that informs her current mindset and attitudes. We also learn a bit about Lucas’s earlier experiences.

When the case dredges up old hurts for Lucas, Harlow has a choice. Does she shut down, or does she find a way to support the best partner she’s ever had? The struggle is real, and Harlow and Lucas’s relationship is tested.

The threat of a potential cop killer carries over from The Girls in the Fire. Is a serial killer targeting cops, and is Harlow next on his list? Or Lucas? And what’s the story with the journalist who tracks Harlow down and demands that she talk to him for the book he’s allegedly writing about her parents?

Tension is high on all fronts, and Poirier pulled me along with the story. This is a compelling read that’s hard to put down once you get started, and the ending left me hungry for the fourth in the series. I recommend Their Final Cry and the Harlow Durant series for anyone who enjoys a good thriller and likes staying up past their bedtime to see what happens next.

This is the third book of Detective Harlow Durant series and I have to say that I wasn't disappointed.

A body of a sixteen-year-old girl was found in an abandoned farmhouse and Harlow and her partner Lucas believe that this case is connected to another case, about the bodies found in a cellar in another farmhouse. The case becomes personal when Lucas' mother and grandmother's remains were found in the cellar. Harlow then remembers about how her father killed the women back in Washington.

This was a fast-paced thriller. The author did a good job of drawing the reader itno the story, making the reader feel like they are a part of the story. There were twists and turns which is a plus sign for a thriller book. Not only that, I do like how both Harlow and Lucas are dealing with their own personal demons--Harlow is the daughter of a well-known serial killer and Lucas is dealing with the disappearance of his mother. What makes this thriller more special is that there's always a cliff hanger in the end, which makes the reader want to know what's going to happen in the next book that makes the reader wait for the next book to come!

Overall, if you like a really a good thriller with a cliff hanger in the end, then this book is one for you--worth five stars!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

Detective Harlow Durant is having a break when she is called back to deal with a cold case that has gone live. Skeletal remains have been found but then a fresh body is dumped on the site. Is there a connection between the old and new crimes?
Their Final Cry is the third book to feature Harlow Durant (I have previously reviewed the second book in the series The Girls in the Fire). She has serious issues centred around her serial killer father and there are flashback chapters showing her past.
The personal side to the main detectives' lives is crucial to the plot but also fascinating to read. Harlow and Lucas really come to life and have a great rapport with each other. They are both flawed and have vulnerabilities which meakes them easy to like and empathise with. We are more alligned with Harlow as the plot is deivered through her first person perspective.
The murder mystery is quite atmospheric with characters mentioning haunting voices in the woods. There is some forensic evidence but it is not particularly graphic. The descriptions of Harlow's father's killing were more visceral as they include her emotive reaction. I felt that the tension was maintained well through the book and the pace was quite rapid. However the plot strands are not wrapped up, leaving a huge cliffhanger and no sign of a sequel...
Their Final Cry is a dramatic and intense detective thriller.

Review

I love, love, love this series. Harow's background story is chilling, thrilling and creepy. She has the kind of past you don't want to share with anyone, but still some people are able to dig the filthy story up and stalk you for their own gains.

But Harlow is not easily perturbed. It does not stop her from doing her job. She is happy with her partner Lucas, because they are a great team. What she lacks in people skills, he can provide them effortlessly.

The crime case is very close to home for her partner. Making a tragic event from the past suddenly becoming very real again. What went on all those years ago???

They are trying to solve an ice cold case that seems to reach out it's icy fingers again to torment the community in the present. But that is not the only thing the team has to focus on.

I know the previous book ended with an enormous bang. This time the author serves us a huge cliffhanger. I deliberately kept this book hoping to be able to read the next part straight after, but up till now there is not 4th one yet. I sincerely hope it will be there soon. 5 stars for this one.

Thank you

This is a book in the Detective Harlow Durant series. It’s my first read in the series and I couldn’t put it down. The story was left on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Detective Harlow Durant is called while on her sabbatical in Washington state and asked to come back to work. The body of a 16 year old has been found at an abandoned farm in New Palz, NY.

Lucas Park is Harlow’s partner and had already been investigating a cold case at the Ackert Farm after remains were discovered by a construction crew working in the area. Now it looks like a serial killer has been in the area for years and the community is on edge.

When another teen goes missing, the race is on to find the person responsible. The case hits close to home for Lucas, whose mother and grandmother went missing years earlier. Could this case have a connection?

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Queen of the cliffhanger!!

Dea keeps you gripped with this story, the crimes that Harlow and Lucas are trying to solve, snippets of both their pasts, a serial killer stalking Harlow and targeting law enforcement who treat her wrong, while once agin, leaving you with a cliff hanger that has you in desparate anticipation that the next book is not too far away.

If you like a story all wrapped up in a nice bow at the end, then this is not the series for you, but if you love a series where each new books gives you greater insights into the main characters - the child of a serial killer and a son suffering abandonment issues after the disappearence of his mum and grandmothe; a good mystery solved in each book and the ongoing action that has you on the edge of your seat then this series is for you!!

Lucky for me, I got my hands on the ARC!!

The Ackert farm used to be a prized orchard. Now the bitter soil only produces corpses.
Harlow’s self reflection trip is cut short with a plea to return to upstate New York and help her partner, Lucas, solve the cold cases. And the new disappearances.
This case churns up much history and angst for the partners, but can they ever fully shake free of their pasts?
The character development is progressing with Harlow. Poirier allows readers to experience more of her past. The same with Lucas. Lucas is a loose cannon and rather dramatic, but Harlow remains somewhat collected.
The author left me with a cliffhanger, which is us just cruel, so the next Installment hopefully will be imminent.
My noggin was noodling in New York as I read.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the advance copy.

This is Book 3 in the Detective Harlow Durant Series. I fell in love with this series after reading the first book, Find Me in the Dark. Their Final Cry explores a determined serial killer who may have been around for decades, Detective Harlow Durant’s memories popping up of her own past childhood of living with her father who is known as rhe “Seattle Sleeper,” and dealing with her partner Lucas’s own quest to solve his mother and grandmother’s disappearance.
Dea Poirier’s writing was excellent as always! I devoured this book just like I did the last two in this series!

Their Final Cry can be read as a stand-alone, but I HIGHLY suggest reading the first two books in the series: Find Me in the Dark and The Girls in the Fire.

This was the first book I’ve read in the series, and realize these would best be read in order. The end is a massive cliffhanger, and the way the book started I’d assume the previous books were as well. I liked that there are lots of separate plot lines going on, many crimes being solved concurrently, as well as lots of flashbacks. It makes the book fly by. My only complaint is that oftentimes the author tells rather than shows you - for example, explaining why Lucas’s question was a bad one, versus letting us figure it out on our own. Others may not notice this at all! If you like busy story’s with lots of plot lines, with a diverse set of characters, this book may be for you. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.

Harlow has the most interesting background. She is a detective, and her father is an infamous serial killer. In this book we get to know about her past a bit more. No wonder she is traumatized. So is her partner at work, and we find out more about him and his past as well. It is not a pretty read.

Well-written, great suspense tangled with terrible history makes this an excellent read! I love Harlow as a character, and it is hard, yet understandable to see how she suffers due to her past. She has her heart in the right place, and she is a great detective because she has a great feel for justice, and she wants to, no needs to deliver!

Highly recommended book, series, author! 4,5 stars.

Another solid addition to the Detective Harlow Durant series. The cases pile up in this one and Harlow and Lucas have to figure out how the past connects to the present. Is there a link with the bodies to the case of Lucas’s missing mom and grandmother. Love the relationship with Harlow and Lucas and how is he slowly getting her to show emotion. In each book we see a bit more of Harlow’s backstory and how this contributes to the person she is today. So many loose ends here which I’m sure will continue in future books … that ending! Need that next book stat!!

I have enjoyed this series immensely. I couldn't read it fast enough.

But it seemed like there were still unanswered questions and I would love there to be one more book. The characters are well defined with flaws and endearing traits.

I would recommend this series to all crime, serial killers enthusiasts. It's a great read.

I love Det. Harlow & Lucas!

I love this series, I knew I would. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, the storyline is amazing. I did notice some typo’s in the book, idk if that’s just a Kindle problem or they’re in the prints.

Prepare to be left on a huge cliffhanger and begging for more! I hope there’s one more book in this series!
