Trapped by their pasts, is there hope for a future?
When Secret Service operative Andrew Darlington is brought in to support a US Marshal case involving counterfeiters in rural Indiana, he thinks it's simply the next rung on his climb to the top of his career. But liars can only climb so high--and Andrew is keeping a dangerous secret he doesn't ever want to get out. When he clashes with the criminal family that took over the town of Landkreis and killed the Marshal he was sent to assist, his past life is in danger of being exposed.
Widow Lightning Lu Thorne has only one goal: escape the clutches of the Thorne family with her son. Her decision to be an informant and testify against the Thornes looked like the perfect answer. Until the Marshal ended up dead. Now the tether keeping her tied to her felonious family is tightening, and a forced marriage to someone else in the Thornes' clutches threatens to kill any hope of escape.
Andrew and Lu find themselves on the same team--unwillingly. They each believe the other to be the enemy to their future plans. And even if they could learn to work together, the secrets they hold could shatter all hopes and dreams. Despite the encouragement of the local preacher, they're not even sure God can be trusted--much less other humans. Can either of them escape their past--and the family that is willing to kill their own when they smell betrayal?
On the heels of her smashing debut, this second entry in Crystal Caudill's historical series maintains the excitement that readers of Michelle Griep, Liz Tolsma, and Elizabeth Camden will love.

Secret Service Agent Andrew Darlington is undercover building a case against the Thorne family.
Counterfeit Hope is filled will well written characters and an engaging story line. Recommended for fans of Historical Romance, in particular those that enjoy Westerns.
Love the author's note following the ending of the novel to flesh out some of the historical details.
My gratitude to publisher Kregel for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
This is a wonderful addition to Caudill’s series. I enjoyed it so much. The plot was very well done and the characters well fleshed out. I love when a book pulls me in quickly. As usual, the author’s spiritual themes are powerful. Hard to put down, this book will resonate after the last page is turned.
My thanks to Kregel Publications for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.
Be prepared – this book grips your heart and won’t let go. Caudill pens a captivating story of redemption and second chances in the midst of a fast-paced plot rife with danger. This is the kind of book that stays with you long after the final page and leaves you with a satisfied sigh and an enduring sense of hope.
With a unique premise and astonishing twists, Crystal Caudill’s Counterfeit Hope is an impressive sequel expertly penned that will leave readers eager for the next book from this fresh voice!
“No matter what you have been through , God has been right by your side, grieving every sin committed to you and by you. Sometimes the sound of His love is drowned out by the evil in this world, but it does not mean He is not speaking words of love and hope to you. It just means you have to listen harder to hear it.” Lu Thorne, a widow, and member of a counterfeiting ring, has had a heard life and has a false hope that she will never escape the evil clutches of the gang. Andrew Darlington, a Secret Service agent, was a member of the Thorne family a lifetime ago. Now he is trying to infiltrate the family in order to arrest them. This story is full of the degradation and evil that sin can bring but a light of hope shines that shows God in His mercy can lift people out of despair. The story somewhat parallels Hosea and Gomer from the Bible, calling on Andrew to love the seemingly unlovable. The hope is realized in the salvation of Lu and the good things God can accomplish in spite of evil men. There was the tension of danger throughout the book. But there were bright spots of humor and the gentle wooing and romance rounded out the story. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel on behalf of the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
A really good read! The story is exciting and the redemptive arc of Lu was stellar. My only struggle with the story was level of evilness of the villains. It was crucial to the storyline but there were certain elements that made it hard to read for me and lowered my overall enjoyment of the story some. I am looking forward to book 3 in this series which luckily releases soon!
Crystal Caudill's debut novel captivated me from word one, and her follow-up offering did exactly the same. Even if all it offered was a swoony romance and riveting historical suspense, that would be enough to keep readers glued to the pages. And yet... Full of emotional depth, complicated family dynamics, and tender redemption, Counterfeit Hope does more than entertain - it wraps the reader in grace. A fantastic sophomore novel from a fresh voice in the genre!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. Opinions expressed are my own. Note:
While the book conveys a strong, beautiful message without the use of explicit or gratuitous content, the novel was a harder read, for me. Counterfeit Hope deals with some very heavy issues, which I do unpack in the content notes of the review. This review contains spoilers.
Scripture Connection
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Rom. 8:24-25
The author includes Rom. 8:24-25, in the King James Version, as the novel’s epigraph. I think the KJV works well with the historical setting and the verse is perfect for a book called Counterfeit Hope.
Spiritual Themes
Hope, as the title suggests, is at the center of the novel, thematically. And, as in the Romans verse, part of that hope pertains to trusting God with the future: not only in this world, but also in the life to come.
Forgiveness is also a huge theme, as one character grapples with what Jesus’ forgiveness looks like. I also really appreciate that the author explicitly states that a person cannot be the answer to another person’s problems. Only Jesus can do that!
I highlighted several passages about forgiveness, Jesus’ dealing with sin (both what we’ve done and the ways we’ve been hurt by others’ sin), and about Him being the only One to fill us. There was some excellent, well-articulated faith content, and it is apparent that the author tells a very dark story so that His light can shine through all the more. I can see the author’s heart flowing through her words, both in the book and on her website, as I think it is beautiful that she wants her readers to know Jesus.
What I Liked
The author begins the novel with a letter to the reader, and there were two things I liked about that. First, she’s very transparent in terms of content/trigger warnings, and I’m glad to see that at the start of the novel. Second, she invites readers to reach out to her (including her email address!), to learn more about the hope that Jesus offers. That is so beautiful! I’m really grateful that Caudill chose to do that.
Caudill does such a great job with characterization, in terms of subverting readers’ initial expectations/reactions. I did not like Lu at the beginning of the book, but she really gained my sympathy as the story went on. Another character I initially felt a little sympathy towards changed my mind (in a bad way) by the end of the story. Also on the topic of characters, I enjoyed seeing Theresa and Broderick make return appearances in this book.
The novel is a marriage of convenience, which isn’t my favorite. With that said, I really appreciated that there wasn’t an overemphasis on the characters’ physical relationship (or lack thereof). It was there, to an extent, especially because of Lu’s history, but that wasn’t the main point of tension in the story.
Lastly, this is the kind of book I would describe as “important.” Although the subject matter made it harder for me to “enjoy” the book, I’m certainly glad that the book has been published. In crafting the character of Lu, Caudill demonstrates the awful reality that, for so many, prostitution is not at all a choice. She also paints Lu as a very human character: certainly not perfect, but someone who is really trying her best to survive an impossible life—and give her son a brighter future. The book is also hugely important because it proclaims the truth of Jesus, and it does that in a beautiful way.

Recommendation Status
Although quite different from the first book in the series, Counterfeit Hope continues the series with another Gilded Era investigation of a counterfeit ring. Unlike book one, the historical fiction is more a blend with suspense, rather than mystery, this time around.
Counterfeit Hope is not an easy read, but it does raise some very important points and questions, with a compelling narrative, and I’m willing to recommend it, on those grounds. However, due to the harsh thematic content, I highly recommend reader discretion.
Oh wow Crystal Caudill has done it again! She captivated me with her debut novel and I impatiently and nervously awaited for this second installment of the Hidden Hearts series. Why nervously? Because you never know what direction an author will head after their debut novel. I have to say that she more than met my expectations. I really loved Counterfeit Hope. It had all the elements that I look for when I am reading a Christian Fiction story.
Let's start with the characters... we immediately meet who has been through a lot. She just wants to break free from her past and the toxic environment that she has been a prisoner of and make sure that her young son is not involved in any sinister things the family is involved in. You really feel for her throughout the whole story and just want her to finally have a chance in life. I really loved that despite what she has been through and how people see her, the pastor and his wife love on her like Jesus would. I think this is so important because it is the way the church is supposed to be towards others. Love and teach who God is in the midst of their circumstances.
The Thornes wow... you always have to have a character that you immediately despise but with this book you get an entire family. They are just pure evil. What Ma Frances puts them through and how she treats them will make you cringe and wonder how God can also love people like them. As sinful humans it's hard for us to comprehend, but that is the thinking that kept running through my mind every time they came into the story.
I was so glad to have a story about Andrew after meeting him in the previous book. His story was a bit surprising and I know it will surprise you where he comes from. God works in mysterious ways and He sure does work within Andrew's heart as he meets Lu and gets deeper and deeper into the case he is working.
If you are looking for a book in which the storyline is embraced with the Gospel then this is it. Don't get me wrong it is not preachy at all but you can tell it is present. I am grateful that the author doesn't shy away from making sure this is present in her stories and I pray that she never does.
Overall I absolutely loved the story. It was great seeing characters from the previous book present in this one. It always makes my bookish heart happy when I see repeat characters in a series. Although this could be a stand alone book, why would you want to skip on the first one?! I definitely recommend you grab both!
I received a copy of this book for review. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This second book in author Crystal Caudill’s Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series had a very different feel than Book One. While both books involve Secret Service operatives and counterfeiting, Counterfeit Hope had a more heavy ambience since it dealt with a sinister and criminal family. However, this emphasized even more the beautiful theme of redemption and God’s grace. It was wonderful to watch Lu Thorne’s character and personal growth slowly unfurl like a spring blossom. The change and improvement in Andrew Darlington was very noticeable not only in this book but especially compared to his appearance in Counterfeit Love. This author has a wonderful gift for storytelling and makes you want to keep reading chapter after chapter. Looking forward to Josiah’s story in the next book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of a giveaway. I was not required to write a review and the opinions expressed here are all my own.
Loved this second book in the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series! Crystal Caudill weaves an amazing, heartfelt story of second chances, redemption, and faith in this fast paced, suspense filled, slow burn romance. There’re some pretty dastardly villains and the premise was so intriguing, I was pulled in right from the first. It’s a clever twist on the age old story of a woman trying to escape her past in order to provide a better life for her son.
Andrew is a no nonsense, serious Secret Service operative who’s been called in to bring justice to a small Indiana town plagued by a crime family of murderers and counterfeiters. Before the US Marshal was murdered, he was working with an informant. Unfortunately, Walt didn’t leave any information behind. Going undercover, Andrew and his partner Josiah try to find the informant and worm their way into the family to bring them down. He doesn’t anticipate his ties to the Thorne family or the woman who will eventually capture his heart.
Widowed Lu Thorne desperately wants to escape from the Thorne family and provide a better life for her son. She was willing to be an informant until the Marshal she was working with was killed. Now the Thornes are even more suspicious and she must bide her time until she can flee. But when Andrew and his partner come to town, they become new obstacles in her plan. As she and Andrew become unwitting partners, both have to decide if they can trust one another. It’s a dangerous dance that might prove deadly as they try to suss out who’s trustworthy and bring down the Thornes.
This story begins with a trigger warning, mainly because of Lu’s tragic past where she was forced to do things against her will. Lu really grows throughout story, and her new found faith helps her see herself the way God sees her. I loved the slow burn romance. What starts out as a forced relationship, really blossoms into a strong bond. Andrew is a bit of a grump and it was fun seeing him discombobulated by Lu. Ma Thorne is downright evil. While she loves her family in her own twisted way, she has a sick, cruel way of controlling them. Her children are not much better with the leering Clint who’s always out to get Lu.
The author does a fantastic job contrasting how others deal with tragedy and evil. Will they become bitter and spiteful or accept the consequences of their actions and the actions of others with grace? I loved how the author incorporated hope into the story. The suspense was intense and I couldn’t wait to see how everything would play out. The intensity is expertly balanced with humor, romance, and a darling little five year old boy who loves his puppy and Jack and the Beanstalk.
It’s a well written, powerful story that will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. Unputdownable! While it’s the second book in the series, it could definitely be read as a standalone. I was happy to recognize previous characters from the first book and the author does a great job introducing them to new readers. Highly recommend to Christian historical romance & romantic suspense fans. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. 4 1/2 stars
Historical? CHECK Great characters? CHECK Full of faith? CHECK
We meet Lu who has been through a life of hardship being sold from one person to another. It makes one want to wring the necks of all the people who have treated her so terribly. Her sole focus is her son, Oscar, who is also under the thumb of the family, and escaping with him.
Then along comes Doc Andrew and Josiah (aka Pretty Boy). They're in town to take down the Thornes. Their initial contact with Lu is humorous and sets the tone for most of their interactions.
To say that the Thornes are the epitome of scum of the earth and filled with evil is putting it mildly. What Ma Frances does time and time again to her family members will make you cringe. What the whole family does to each other and those in the town makes the readers cry for justice. Thank goodness the lawmen are in town, but they have their work cut out for them.
Lu has so much to learn after all she's been through. Thankfully the pastor and his wife have slowly loved on her over time. She's doing her best to understand God in the midst of all of her bad choices and the life forced upon her. And Andrew struggles to see her through the eyes of the Lord when he knows her to only be a pickpocket and a woman who sidles up to men when given the chance.
Readers, let me tell you, this story is so filled with faith and the Gospel, that I was constantly smiling in my heart. The author doesn't shy away from it at all. In fact, she uses faith at every chance given. It's not done in a way that's over the top or doesn't fit, but it comes up at all of the right times!! I loved it!
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
Every bit as great as the first book in the series. Caudill is fantastic at pacing stories so the reader is constantly thinking, “I’ll just read one more chapter” and before she knows it, she’s finished the entire book. I love the way that characters from book one were incorporated into the plot of this book in a way that felt natural-not a quick cameo appearance, but a significant role in developing the plot. I am really looking forward to the next book, which is to be released later this year!
What a unique tale of love and redemption. Andrew and Lu are from two different worlds and yet are connected by the notorious Thorne family, best described as hillbilly mafia. There is so much to like about this well-written novel. Caudill has a way with words that draws you in. Full of unexpected twists, the story is one to keep readers engaged.
What I enjoyed most about this story is the powerful message of hope and the tenacious love that grows between Andrew and Lu. As the story unfolds, Lu undergoes a transformation of the heart and soul, while Andrew learns the value of choosing to love unconditionally.
A gripping tale of Secret Service intrigue set during the late 1880's.
Thank you to Kregel Publications for providing an ARC of this novel. I was not required to write a review. All views are my own.
I loved this follow-up to Counterfeit Love! I was uncertain about the hero going in because he wasn't exactly lovable in the first book... but the author did a great job of convincing me he was hero-worthy! The heroine's backstory was sad but I enjoyed how the author brought her through that and allowed her faith journey to be prominent. I listened to the audiobook because the narrator is a favorite of mine. She did a wonderful job as always. I can't wait for book 3!
Counterfeit Hope is the second book in the series. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, but the stories are loosely connected with their characters.
I would not normally choose to read a story with abuse in it. I appreciate the author making it known right at the beginning. I loved the first story and decided to read this one anyway. I am glad I did. Abuse is wrong and hard to read about, but this story is not as heavy as it could have been.
I liked Lu immediately and found myself rooting for her throughout the story. She has to endure more than her fair share of suffering, but she always seems to bounce back. She is bound and determined that her son, Oscar, will have a proper upbringing and get away from the Thorne family. Unfortunately, they thwart her at every opportunity.
We briefly met Andrew in the first book. It was fascinating getting his story in this one! He is a complex character, facing difficult circumstances, yet he finds a way to do his job while protecting those around him.
I enjoyed this story and have already started the third one, Counterfeit Faith. I can't wait to see where it takes me.
Counterfeit Hope has so many elements that I love, including intriguing characters, a historical setting, and an unexpected romance! I was immediately drawn into Lu Thorne's story, but it wasn't always easy to read. Tragic circumstances forced her into a life of crime, but she now had one goal: to escape to a better life for her young son and herself. Would a marriage of convenience to a Secret Service operative be the first step to achieving this? Is Andrew Darlington's secret past something that she can use to her advantage?
Author Crystal Caudill takes us back to America's Gilded Age and the Secret Service's continued efforts to find the counterfeit rings that were rampant in the 1880s. She paints a vivid picture of good, evil, and the power of sin but also shows that hope and redemption are available to all. Sadly, there are those who refuse to seek forgiveness! I was totally engrossed with this thought-provoking story and I recommend Counterfeit Hope to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.
I received a copy from the author and Kregel Publications. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
Part two of the series, this book carries forward with Darlington's story and what a history he's got hidden! This is a story of redemption and hope for both Lu and Andrew. Some of Lu's story in this book reminds me of Addie's story in Remember Me by Tracie Peterson.
You will see Broderick and Theresa again from book #1--and Theresa remains my favorite person. LOL.
I highlighted a few passages I will come back and add later.
I absolutely loved this book!! It was such an exciting read and I didn’t want to put it down! The suspense was amazing and I loved the storyline. I definitely recommend this book!
A wonderful "marriage of inconvenience" novel. Two characters are thrown together, who don't want to be, but in the end it might be the best thing for them. A retelling of sorts of Hosea and Gomer. This story portrays a beautiful redemption for two very broken people. It asks, how far would one mother go to keep her family together? Counterfeit Hope is a whirlwind blend of romance, danger, mystery, and faith. I loved how characters from book one are included, but in a way that book two still stands on its own. One thing I enjoyed is how tactfully the author handled the "marriage" part of the story. I love that she didn't shy away from the hard things, but still made them palatable to sensitive readers. I highly recommend it for mature readers. (Some themes may be unsuitable for younger readers due to the nature of Lu’s circumstances and past life.)
“Peace and fear cannot reside together. You either have one or the other. Never both at the same time.
This book. It may sound cliché but it was so filled with hope. We meet strong, well developed characters, and I loved both cranky Andrew and the charming Lu. There was so much more to both of them than what you could see on the surface. It had the worst kinds of villains, and they were truly scary in their disregard for anyone else. I adored Oscar, the puppies, and Lu’s friends and the people she was forming real, healthy relationships with. The love story was magnificent…both between Andrew & Lu and between God and his people, but it wasn’t always pretty. If I’m allowed to pick favorites, this is mine so far in the series. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to write a positive review.
Crystal Caudill can write. She is a historical fiction boss, and this is only her second book. Her plot line is intriguing and keeps you reading into the late night hours. Her characters are all over the place in a good way. Some are dangerous and keep you guessing. Some are sincere, sweet, warm and inviting. And yet others make you second guess what you think of them throughout the entire book. Caudill doesn’t stop there. She adds plot twists at the perfect spots. She has sparks of romance sprinkled throughout, again at just the right moments. And her faith thread? Oh my goodness it was good. Probably my favorite out of my recent reads. I’m telling you – Caudill can write. And while this seems like a book that might be going in fifty different directions, I promise you it isn’t. Caudill brings every single aspect together flawlessly.
Andrew is such a wonderful hero. He’s got everything you want – faith, loyalty to the right people, strength, patience, and more. There were so many times I was on the edge of my seat wondering how he would handle situations, and he handled them with such grace and ease. He sacrificed himself in order to make the world a better place. SWOON. And the way he was with Lu? Oh boy. Patience doesn’t even begin to describe it. But in true Hosea fashion, he was willing to follow the Lord’s lead. Let me tell you – that in itself makes him swoony.
And then there’s Lu. Her character surprised me so many times during this story, all in good ways. She was so much more then people gave her credit for. The things she had to deal with, I can’t even imagine it. (Also – please make sure you read the very first page before diving into this book. Caudill gives some trigger warnings for those with reading sensitivities) And Caudill never makes it “come alive” on the pages so to speak. She handles each situation poetically, and only gives enough so the reader knows what is going on.
Caudill has really outdone herself with this novel. It surpassed my expectations, and then some. Her faith thread has touched me in ways I never imagined, and Lu’s story is going to stay with me for a very long time. I highly recommend not only this novel, but Counterfeit Love as well. Carve out some reading time, because you are going to need it. And get those sticky flags ready, because you are going to note a LOT of great quotes!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
With danger lurking around every corner, I couldn’t even take a moment to breathe while waiting to see if Lu and her son would make it out of the Thorne family clutches alive. The suspense was deliciously drawn out especially in the last half of the story. But wait, not only was there suspense, but a romance pushing its way into the story. It was also drawn out in a very sweet way making me want to savor every page. But wait, there’s more! An inspirational redemptive thread, no make that thick yarn, was woven in here as well.
I received this book complimentary as a member of the author’s launch team. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are honest and my own.
New to this author, I just finished her Counterfeit series and unexpectedly liked it more than I thought I would! The first book, Counterfeit Love was good and the second book, Counterfeit Hope, was even better with lots of drama and suspense that had me on the edge of my seat at times! I also liked that the lives of the three Secret Service agents intertwine within the three books. Also, her books are filled with faith in Christ and the Gospel message which is always an encouragement to me. The last book was my least favorite, feeling like it dragged on a little and lacked the suspense of the first two books, (probably just me) but that's not to take away from Crystal Caudill's ability as a great writer and storyteller, incorporating so well the Christian message of Faith, Hope and Love in each of her stories. Well done! Will definitely read any of her future books.
Love love and love this story! We all have those times when all hope seems lost, that there is no possible way out of the situation that we find ourselves in. But God is the God of miracles, hope, love, and second chances. We just have to trust Him in the middle of the mess.
3.5 stars for me. I really enjoyed this book. I think CF readers who enjoyed Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers would enjoy this. I thought Lu and Andrew’s story was told really well. It was also great to see characters from the previous book play a part in this one.
"This was the last time. After tonight, she and Oscar would be free from the den of thieves they called family."
And then the bottom dropped out, yet again, for Lu Thorne . .. . the U. S. Marshall that she had counted on to be an escape hatch was dead, and so was his deal. Now her life and the life of her young son was clearly in mortal danger; if the Thornes ever found out that she had agreed to become a confidential informant against them, the consequences would be painfully swift.
When undercover Secret Service agent Andrew Darlington and his partner encounter a flirtatious bar maid upon arriving in Landkreis, Indiana, Andrew knows exactly what she's up to, and remains unaffected . . . sort of. But his fellow agent's wallet isn't so lucky. The little thief has skills, he'll grant her that, but it's her last name that scares him to death. What in heaven's name has he gotten himself into?
The initial introduction in the town saloon is only the beginning of Andrew's encounters with the lovely young widow Thorne, perhaps she might be of some assistance? Never would he have imagined how God was going to accomplish that feat. . . his reputation for sporting "sour, dour faces" was about to undergo a rather dramatic transformation, Andrew Darlington was going to become charming. . . . . a young woman's life depended on it. However, the final cost? . . . . was in God's hands and in God's hands only. Lu Thorne desperately needed hope . . . here and now, and for all eternity.
A celebration of redemption story! A powerful faith story! An appropriately passionate love story! There's nothing counterfeit about the hope that abounds from the pages of this book. Readers will find it quite satisfying to observe crotchety Andrew Darlington squirm beneath the power of affection, albeit mixed with a nearly lethal dose of action and adventure.
"For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. " Romans 8:24-25
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
✅ Historical Romantic Suspense ✅ 1884 in rural Indiana - Gilded Age ✅ Amazing character development. ✅ BEAUTIFUL redemptive arc.
This book blew me away! I’ve read enough Christian Fiction to realize that not all authors put a lot of faith into their characters or stories. While the story can still be great, reading a Christian Fiction and not finding much of Christ in it is disheartening. That is NOT the case with this book - God’s love and grace are woven throughout the story in a real, genuine, and not preachy way. I stayed up way too late a few nights in a row to finish reading this book and found myself a bit teary-eyed on more than one occasion.
After reading the first novel, I wasn’t excited to discover that Andrew Darlington is our main male character. 😂 I am not a fan of his in the first novel but Miss Caudill managed to convert me! Crystal Caudill is an obvious master storyteller and character writer. The development of this character in particular didn’t feel rushed or fake - it was real, it was gritty, it was a struggle, and it was beautiful to read. There were some tough topics written about in this story but they were handled with the utmost grace. Evil is evil - sin is sin. Only God is good. I finished this book feeling bolstered in my faith and left wanting to be an even better person. This book deserves more than 5 stars! Everyone should read this book - you’ll be thankful you did!
If you enjoy books filled with danger, adventure, nail biting scenes, and romance you’ll get it all in Counterfeit Hope! Not to mention you’ll be rooting for the underdog up to the very end!
Remember that infuriating and unlikable Secret Service agent, from Counterfeit Love, Andrew Darlington? Yeah him! I hate to tell you, but you’ll be in love with him by the end of this story. Andrew is the picture-perfect knight in shining armor as he faces his past and rescues a damsel who has been in distress since childhood. His tender and protective side will throw you for a loop at first, but it fits him well!
Lu Thorne has been bought, sold, used, and abused. She’s smart, cunning, and has learned to do what she must to survive and ensure the safety of her son. Lu has lived her life without hope or love until she meets Andrew and God.
Going against odds that only God can surmount, Andrew and Lu fight for truth, justice, and love!
Reasons I enjoyed this story: Christian fiction, suspenseful, adventurous, dark, emotional, hopeful, inspiring, tense, medium-paced
Plot- or character-driven? A mix Strong character development? Yes Loveable characters? It's complicated Diverse cast of characters? Yes Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
The audiobook is fantastic—5-star performance!
This story moves at a medium pace for the majority of the plot, with moments of fast-paced excitement that are timed perfectly to keep things lively and entertaining.
Throughout much of the novel, I felt for Lu. She was forced into a life that she detested, and her only desires were to do what was right, take care of her son, and get him away from the evil that surrounds them daily. Lu doesn't know who, or even how, to trust. Everyone in her life who should have loved and protected her has only used her for their own gain and abused her, either physically or emotionally. She is an incredibly strong woman with a deep resolve to break away and provide a better life for her child.
Andrew is so harsh and overwhelmingly bitter in the beginning. I am glad I warmed up to him as he realizes all isn't as it appears. It took him long enough to acknowledge that the brokenness around him wasn't all of someone's own doing, and that grace needed to be extended. I also acknowledge the amount of stress he is under as he not only has to live as an undercover agent but also keep a secret from everyone, not only to protect his colleagues but his own livelihood.
There are parts of the story, believe it or not, that reminded me of people I know in my life today. It is sad and a little scary to have Ma Thorne resonate as a real-life character. But I know people like her, who control, or attempt to control, every aspect of the lives of those they love, not understanding what it means to actually love their children. I saw a broken woman who needed a gracious Father to reach her soul, yet a stubborn, hard heart that probably won't ever be softened enough to acknowledge that need. I don't know if there can ever be a Thorne redemption in the subsequent books, but if possible, that would be an amazing story arc for this family.
I am so deeply vested in this series and cannot wait to begin the next book, "Counterfeit Faith." What kind of happy ending will "Pretty-Boy Joe" get?! And how tough will his road be to reach his HEA?
Related to the warnings, possible spoilersAt the beginning of this book, Crystal Caudill lists her own set of warnings. The FMC is a former prostitute that was sold into that life. Then, bought by a crime family who does not love her, she is forced to continue living a life she hates just to survive. This book is about the early years of the U.S. Secret Service, so there is a little "old-time western" violence. Nothing graphic, nor overly descriptive is shared.
