I don’t know if I laughed more than I cried or vice versa
Eli’s and Bridget’s lightening up on the tension so that they can work on getting back to being friends is so refreshing. Especially, since they’d been together from such a young age. They talked smack with each other just as if they were back in high school… plus, lots of shoulder-nudging and winking and eye rolls.
Without getting into too much detail, there was a variety of serious topics, just like in the previous books of this series.
Physical trauma (my mother was in a similarly horrendous car accident years ago), total loss of control due to injuries (body, time, work, living arrangements), toxic parents, if/when/how to come out, emotional trauma from the accident in the form of nightmares, mention of domestic violence, etc.
The one that affected me the most was Bridget’s low self-esteem (addressed here and previously). I counted at least ten instances just in the first half of the book when she beats herself up: complete opposite of special, broken, wallow in her self-pity, cried over everything, couldn’t keep her stuff together, shame (3 times), hated being vulnerable, she shouldn’t need anyone’s comfort and support, weakling, because nothing good ever lasted for her, wuss, I’m so “messed” up…
Setting healthy boundaries so everyone feels safe is still a strong theme, perhaps even much more so in this book than in the previous ones. Examples are:
Bridget’s emotional environment in the hospital, how Eli asks permission to help her physically, the post-hospital living arrangements, professional relationship morphing into personal, both Eli’s and Bridget’s communication about being ex-girlfriends-back-to-best-friends since childhood with their new partners, visits from co-workers.
Bridget has a wonderful support system – people who actually *protect* her.
This time off from her hectic work life may be exactly what Bridget needed in order think about what she wants from life. Only then, can she begin coming to terms about having a healthy relationship in her small town.
If I ever need a wingman...I'd want Eli.
I still have #’s 2 & 4 to read and also to continue with the ‘Agent Morgan Stone’ & ‘Tales of the Undead and Depraved’ series.
