Maris Wicks lives in Somerville, Massachusetts. She has harnessed the power of her various biological systems to draw comics for Adhouse Books, Tugboat Press, and Spongebob Comics, and has written stories for Image and DC Comics. Wicks is the illustrator of New York Times bestselling Primates, with Jim Ottaviani. Her solo graphic novels include Human Body Theater and Science Comics: Coral Reefs. She is quite fond of being in the water, whether it's swimming in ponds or scuba diving in the Atlantic Ocean.
This is for Coral Reefs only: As with all the books in the science comics series, the science in this graphic novel is excellent. The illustrations are brightly colored and vividly depict coral reefs - the wide variety of them and the life that lives on them and sustains them. There is a fish called a goby acting as the narrator. There is also lots of info about climate change, pollution, and other things that are harming coral reefs. Back matter includes glossary, extra info, bibliography, and additional resources. Give this to your science teachers and your students who love the ocean!
Read the coral reefs book and loved how the information was broken down. It's a great nonfiction read for elementary-aged kids who are into graphic books/comics (Dogman series, Brobots).
