I love fantasy, adventure, and magic. More than that, I adore my readers.
My books are written to entertain -- fantasy adventures filled with compelling characters, spectacular magic, thrilling action, constant intrigue, and a sense of discovery. I equate them to the "Marvel Movie" version of fiction, intended to be a fun escape.
I would love to have you join me and my quirky characters for one outrageous adventure after another. With over a million published words, my author journey has just begun.
Best wishes, Jeff

This was a brilliant little Wizardoms jape that explored more of the backstory of one of the most entertaining characters in the full series. Jerrell Landish accomplishes one task but accidentally finds himself in the debt of another powerful figure and has to achieve the impossible to survive. The writing is pithy and pacy, the action scenes plentiful and immersive and the dialogue full of wit and charm. Freed a little from the overarching plot of a big series, this allowed us to get our hands on a Landish caper with less ties to a grander work (except for certain people having to still be alive by the end!). I wish more authors would take characters from their series and write side stories and explore aspects of their hinted-at pasts.
“Avoid indulgence? The mere idea of it rubbed Jerrell the wrong way…”
Thief for Hire is a masterfully written novel exploring the earlier exploits of everyone’s favorite thief, Jerrell Landish. He is a handsome, conniving, intelligent, creative, simply hilarious, and most important of all, Lucky thief. If something requires stealing then Landish is definitely the only smart choice for the job (he has even been know to steal the small clothes off of unsuspecting acquaintances). However, his many daring and seemingly impossible hires tend to often get him on the wrong side of wizards and ungifted alike wherever he is found. These lead to some extremely ingenious and beyond hilarious situations that he must use his cunning and wit to plan, fight, and sometimes charm his way out of!
In this story we find Jerrell on the wrong side of a drunken night of pleasure with a beautiful stranger, all his gold has been stolen and he now owes the inkeeper 5 gold to cover the damages of a fight caused by a game of dice. After having spent the better part of the last year drinking, gambling, and many pleasure filled nights he now finds himself broke and searching for a “job” to earn himself enough money to pay his debts and build up his coin. Along the way he creates several disguises, thwarts a plethora of sticky situations, causes and creates an abundance of embarrassing situations, has so many female exploits (so many…) and starts to develop into the wonderful Jace found in the Fate and the Fall of the Wizardom series.
Jerrell, of course, is my favorite character. Although he is often a lot to handle and can appear to be a bit pigheaded, he really is a kind guy (don’t spread that around…we wouldn’t want to ruin his reputation) and he is absolutely hilarious. I have yet to find a character that makes me laugh like he does. His character is so well written and fleshed out sometimes I wonder if Kohanek has based him off an entirely real person.
Honestly this is the case for all of Kohanek’s characters, main and side characters alike. Somehow he manages to give each character their own distinct personality and characteristics and they all seem to come alive before your very eyes and explode off the page. I’ve never read another author who could create characters like him.
All in all, this is a fabulously fun story that I can’t wait to continue in the next two installments. I just love this crazy resourceful and hilarious thief and can’t wait to read what mischief he gets himself into (and out of) next! If you like heroes that don’t always act like heroes, that get themselves into more trouble than seems possible, and then somehow seems to always get themselves out of it, usually in some kind of unbelievable and simply hilarious way, then you just have to read Thief for Hire! You won’t be disappointed!
I really, really need to get around to reading the 'main tales' that make up Jeffrey Kohanek's worlds. They have been on my to read list for what seems forever and I just... never quite get around to them. And then I read a short or (what I assume to be) a side story like this and it reminds me that I need to bump them up the list.
Thief for Hire is one of those reads that is both great fun and a great story. Following Jerrell, scoundrel and con-artist as he decides to take on some of his biggest challenges yet; the wizards. But not just any wizards, no. Jerrell has his sights set on some of the most powerful wizards around and it can only be so long before his luck well and truly runs out.
Jerrell is sly, witty and clever. He is also arrogant, cocky and completely self-serving. He makes for a fantastic lead character to read about. You never know quite what he's thought of next, but I absolutely guarantee it will make you laugh.
Quick-paced, hilarious and genuinely great fun, this was one of those books that once again made me wonder why I haven't read more of Kohanek's work. It's a very real question and one I simply don't have a good answer for.
I simply adore Jerrell! What's not to love???? He's the most cocky, impetuous thief I've read about. Hmmm, maybe not really impetuous, although he is very impulsive at times and very opportunistic! He can turn almost every situation to his advantage using only his sharp wit and scheming brain. He's arrogant and so confident in his skills and let me tell you, he REALLY is skilled in his, shall we call it craft? But at the same time he's so charming, when he turns on the charm, few can resist him. It makes for exceptional reading! And he's a sucker for a pretty face which is why he's in the predicament he's in! But true to style, he's so.... resourceful, so daring! He seems to burn every bridge behind him, but then again, he DID dare to steal and humiliate powerful wizards. I really enjoyed the humor, very tongue in cheek, take this scene for instance, Mond asks Jerrell what does he first notice on a woman and Jerrell, with a deadpan face, says "the eyes". Yeah, right! What I can say with conviction, if you read this book, you, like me, will be rooting for Jerrell, booing the wizards, who all incidentally try to dishonour their promise to Jerrell. As I said at the beginning, how can one not fall in love with Jerrell and this wonderful fast paced and extremely entertaining tale!
Jerrell is quite the thief and creative survivor. I enjoyed his adventures dealing with magical artifacts and wizards. This was a quick, lighthearted tale for me and I mostly enjoyed the read aside from a few passages.
I look forward to the next in this trilogy and to perhaps move onto other books by the author in his fantasy world.
Jerrell Landish is one of my very favorite rogues ever, so a book full of his escapades really went down well. He is such a charming and witty rogue, his sarcasm is awesome and he is quite fearless trusting that his luck will never run out. As long as he has his throwing knives and his lock picks Landish can get out of any pickle he gets himself into and I think he believes that practice makes perfect as he manages to get himself into one pickle after another. This time round he gets himself involved with the high wizards, the most powerful and dangerous people in the wizardoms, as he cheekily robs them and takes them for a ride, fooling them one too many times. This is the first season of Landish’s escapades and such a fun book to read I could not stop reading and find myself looking forward to the next season with yet more fun adventures with this charismatic and irreverent rogue!
What It's About: Con artist Jerrell finds himself facing off against his most dangerous foe ever--the wizardly ruling class. He has lived by his wits for a long time, but will that be enough to face their magical power?
What I Thought: I was surprised by how much fun I had reading this one. Jerrell is a delightful character, quick-witted and pleasantly rogueish. The plot is fast-paced. And the humor lands almost without exception. A straightforwardly fun read.
Who I'd Recommend It To: If you enjoyed The LIes of Locke Lamora, or if Kaz was your favorite character in Six of Crows, but you'd like a little more humor, check this out!
Wizardom Legends: Thief for Hire by Jeffrey L. Kohanek . Jerrell Landish is a skilled thief and con artist who is very clever, inventive and skilled. When he hires out his services he soon discovers that the schemes of ambitious wizards involve risks any sane person would avoid. Jerrell is just crazy enough to manipulate the ruling wizard class against one another... until he finds himself a victim of one of their plots. Can he get out of this alive and if so how does he do it? I enjoyed reading and want to read more from this writer. This book is available on Amazon
He seemed less like a cunning trickster and more like a giant butt, who treated everyone like crap and thought it was clever. Just lying all the time and punching people isn’t being an amazing master of plots.
I found this book interesting. Since this was before Narene, it's nice to know Jerrell is still his sarcastic self even in the early days. I enjoy his cunning way of thinking & his mischievous ways. His antics always make me laugh. My favorite part was when he acquired the horse at the end, hilarious. I loved this story and getting ready to dive into the next one. One of my favorite characters & one of my favorite author as well.
What a book, filled with thief’s, con artists and more in this small town. There’s no stopping until you find out what happens next. Don’t miss out once it’s released.
Jerrell Landish’s journey to become the Greatest Thief in the Eight Wizardoms begins!
Throughout the Fate of Wizardoms Jerrell tells many stories of his previous life. It was fun to read the exciting tales in fuller detail and gain a deeper understanding of Jerrell’s character. Jerrell defies all odds with wit, complex schemes and incredible boldness. Great start to this new series. Looking forward to the next books.
Wonderful world-building with an engrossing storyline populated with characters you either love or hate this is one of those books that once you start reading you have to keep turning the pages just to see what happens next. With a clever talented thief wizards magic humor and a lot of sarcasm, you won't be able to put this down, well worth a look, Baz.
The lead character had no purpose. He was doing a lot of things, but I didn't know why he was doing what he was doing, other than for money. There are other ways to make money that doesn't involve putting your life in danger so everything he did felt meaningless. The subplots were entertaining but they were unrelated to each other.
So glad the author decided to revisit Jerrell and fill his backstory out ! . Great read on its own , but as a feeder into the series it’s a brilliant and funny read well recommend ! .
Clever and extremely lucky, Gerall Landish stumbles from one crazy plot to another. His superpower is outfitting power hungry wizards with evil intent.
This is a very entertaining break from the world saving epic sagas. The main character Jerrell Landish is a very likable rogue that’s an imaginative thief. There’s enough magic, swords and wizards to keep you entertained in this genre but not so dark and gloomy. Good read.
I enjoyed this tale a lot. Action, adventure, romantic encounters... Where will Jerrell's exploits lead him? I have yet to know, but happily look forward to the next book in this series.
- in which Jerrell begins the story broke, tricks a few wizards, is tricked by a few wizards, “swims” underwater for an excessively long time, and emerges at the end of his adventures only slightly less broke. - tie-ins to other wizardoms: watch GaLang Reagor fight a gladiator match; cute exchange between Jerrell and a twelve-year-old Princess Irrika (Lord Horus’s daughter).
An accomplished swordsman, liar, con artist, thief and all around rogue, Jerrell is so much fun! This is the tale of how he becomes a legendary thief mostly by making sure that everyone he tricks knows his name. I love a good heist story and this book delivers. The book begins with Jerrell losing all of the money he earned in the short story The Legend of Shadowmar, so he needs to return to his former profession. He decides to try a big sting and offers to help a wizard defeat his rival. There are several daring escapes, exciting fights, betrayals, a few parties, and a variety of schemes. It’s a great read! I’m looking forward to the next book.
