When Iran's top anchorwoman, Raji, collides with a Jewish American agent, Myk, it unlocks an unknown labyrinth to a linked history. An explosion in a parking garage in Beirut leaves two-year-old Raji motherless and under the thumb of her infamous bomb-maker father. Raised in Iran, a country where the laws and culture are already stacked against her, she refuses to conform. When Raji's son, Yasser, is murdered by a bullet that is meant for Myk at a crowded plaza in San Francisco, the tragedy creates a vortex that pulls Raji and Myk together in pursuit of the same enemy. Myk must stop a faceless state from unleashing a deadly virus in the United States while powerful men try to prevent him from discovering the truth behind a decades-old mystery that saw a dozen US agents massacred at an isolated lake in the Swiss Alps. As Myk races across the globe to Italy, France, and Iran in search of clues to expose his enemy, Raji risks it all and stuns the world.
TOM FITZGERALD led a Huckleberry Finn childhood on the St. Lawrence River before undertaking formal studies in physics, mathematics, law, industrial management, and English. He has served as a door-to-door salesman of home-study courses, a vocational counselor for adults and children with developmental disabilities, a stockbroker, the assistant to the president of a large health-care corporation, a lobbyist, a technical writer, and a corporate manager. In the latter two capacities, his employers have included AT&T Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, NEC, IBM/Lotus Development, and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.
Tom served as a Navy UDT/SEAL during the Vietnam era, and has swum several long distances, including across the eastern end of Lake Ontario, a distance greater than the English Channel. He is the author of three works of fiction: Chocolate Charlie (Warner Books, 1974), A Matter of Scents (Pyramid Books, 1974) and Chocolate Charlie Comes Home (Warner Books, 1978), as well as several works of nonfiction.
Political intrigue mixed with a budding romance , this story is a thriller with a lot of heart. Ragi is an Iranian woman, daughter of a terrorist, and wife of an influential but cold husband. She is a newscaster who is widely known and well regarded in her nation. Yet she harbors troubling memories of her childhood along with a marriage long gone sour. She is a force to be reckoned with who is deeply disturbed by the subservient role of women in the ayatollah’s Iran and longs for personal freedom. Her best friend is a Texas cowgirl and oil millionaire living in Paris, who embodies for Raji an alternate way to live and love. Enter Myk, a tough Israeli, working for the USA. Slowly, the two build a friendship and develop trust in each other, despite their differences in upbringing and religion. Their mission is to prevent a germ warfare attack with potential destructive ability that far surpasses COVID 19. The plot is interesting and creative. The characters are well conceived. Yet the story fell short of excellent, perhaps because I found the dialogue a bit stilted and the events a bit too convenient. . People who enjoy reading political thrillers, will find a their villains easily within the Insignificant Girl. It’s an interesting ride in mostly unique territory. I wish to thank #netgalley and publisher #mascotbooks for a free copy in exchange for an honest review b
The Insignificant Girl is a fast-paced and compelling read! The characters have depth, chemistry, and are believable. We need more people in the USA like Raji and Ali to bravely stand up and speak truth against our government-controlled media.
