Thomas Thiemeyer studeerde kunst en geologie in Keulen. In 1989 kwam zijn eerste jeugdboek uit bij Ravensburger uitgeverij waar hij als grafisch adviseur werkte. Als freelance artiest werkte hij samen met verschillende diensten om jeugdboeken, boekomslagen of toneelstukken te illustreren. Boeken schrijven deed hij ook nog altijd.
In 2007 werd het boek Magma uitgebracht.
Het verhaal.
Uit de Marianentrog komen signalen naar de oppervlakte en dit met regelmatige tussenpozen. Door die regelmatigheid kunnen ze geen natuurlijke oorsprong hebben. Geologe Ella en wetenschapper Konrad Martin dalen af naar het diepste deel van de trog en ontdekken een grote stenen kogel. Een kogel harder dan diamant en niet te meten.
Als plotseling signalen komen vanuit andere delen van de wereld moeten Ella en Konrad de wereld afreizen. Op alle plaatsen stuiten ze op stenen kogels. Kogels die allemaal samen signalen uitzenden die ervoor zorgen dat de wereld getroffen wordt door aardbevingen en vulkaanuitbarstingen.
Ella, die haar eigen problemen heeft, en Konrad, die iets lijkt te verbergen, zullen moeten samenwerken om de wereld te redden van verwoesting.
Mijn gedacht
Bij het woord Eco-thriller denkt men natuurlijk direct aan klimaatsverandering of vervuiling. Verwoesting door de natuur. In Magma komt dit wel ter sprake maar het treed nooit echt op de voorgrond. De zoektocht naar de oorsprong van de kogels is en blijft het center van het verhaal. Het is dus wel eco maar die komt er maar in mindere mate in voor.
De uitwerking van het verhaal mist voor mij wat zijn effect. Geen gewaarwording na het lezen om het ecologisch beter te doen. Ik heb er zelf geen ervaring in maar ik vermoed dat er meer in zat in dit verhaal.
De personages die aan bod komen konden geen connectie maken met mezelf. Ik bleef het verhaal wat afstandelijk volgen. Hun onderlinge dynamiek zit wel goed in elkaar. Hoe ze met elkaar omgaan en de mysteries samen te lijf gaan. Maar niemand sprong eruit waarmee je de zo belangrijke band mee kunt aangaan om het verhaal mee te beleven.
Het slot
Het slot bevat geen grote verassingen meer. Wat voorzien was had ik al geraden enkele tientallen pagina’s vooraleer ze effectief beschreven werden.
Conclusie
Niet het beste eco-verhaal dat ik al gelezen heb. Geen slecht verhaal maar de verschillende rampen mochten meer aan bod gekomen zijn. Dit ging het verhaal spannender en vlotter maken. Geen slecht boek, versta me niet verkeerd, maar er zat een pak meer in dan dat er nu uitgekomen is.

Signals come to the surface from the Mariana Trench at regular intervals. Due to this regularity, they cannot have a natural origin. Geologist Ella and scientist Konrad Martin descend to the deepest part of the trench and discover a large stone ball. A bullet harder than diamond and unmeasurable.
When signals suddenly come from other parts of the world, Ella and Konrad have to travel the world. In every place they encounter stone bullets. Bullets that all together send out signals that cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to hit the world.
Ella, who has her own problems, and Konrad, who seems to be hiding something, will have to work together to save the world from destruction.
My thought
When you hear the words Eco-thriller, you immediately think of climate change or pollution. Destruction by nature. In Magma this is mentioned but it never really comes to the foreground. The search for the origin of the bullets is and remains the center of the story. It is therefore eco, but it occurs only to a lesser extent.
The elaboration of the story is somewhat lacking for me. No sensation after reading to do better ecologically. I have no experience with it myself, but I suspect there was more to it in this story.
The characters that are discussed could not connect with myself. I kept aloof from the story. Their mutual dynamics are well put together. How they interact and tackle the mysteries together. But no one stood out with whom you can enter into the all-important bond to experience the story.
The end
The end no longer contains any big surprises. I had already guessed what was foreseen several dozen pages before they were actually described.
Conclusion
Not the best eco-story I've read. Not a bad story but the various disasters could have been discussed more. This made the story more exciting and smooth. Not a bad book, don't get me wrong, but there was a lot more in it than has come out now.

Style and Language
Ella Jordan is a seismologist and wants nothing more than a family of her own and a quiet office job as professor at a university. The first is still not in sight, and her job at the university is cut of right at the start. Her country needs her knowledge and she has no other choice but to follow the call.
Thomas Thiemeyer brings Ella´s story through an invisible storyteller to the reader. His language is simple and easy to understand. The author has a great way to bring even the driest science alive. His combination of action, science, friction and that hint of Sci-Fi elements make Magma a very unique thriller. Step by step develops the author a tension which unfolds from chapter to chapter even more. The change of scene does the rest to keep the reader stuck to the book.
Characters
A whole variety of different characters comes in this thriller together and evil is not right away as that to recognize for the reader. The usual picture of the dry scientist is here as much given as the scientist who is a lesbian and cold as ice or the one who is a hidden freak. Political ambitions come across with the simple ambitions of science and the main figure has to fight the fact that great power can be as life threatening as Mother Nature itself.
It is quite interesting to follow the development of Ella, to see how she reacts when she finds herself in an absolutely deadly situation and how she handles the truth when she discovers the hidden talents of one of her colleagues.
Result
Magma is a remarkable thriller which contains some figures that are not trivial.

Wow, what a disappointment!!!
Really, when I started reading this book it finally looked like a really good thriller. It still did after some kind of hang around page 100. After all, I was interested in the story, it looked promising. Even though the writing style was kind of...you know...not good. Anyway, I wanted to read more of it, find out what was behind all of this...
But the further I got, the more I felt disappointed. After page 350 I was like...WTF, you gotta be kidding me! Seriously, the moment Thomas Thiemeyer came up with some SF crap (read: aliens) I was fed up! Really. In the end, it was the easiest solution of all times. And the result with the globes? You gotta be kidding me! I read over 500 pages to get this crap?! Seriously???
Honestly, I don't have anything against SF and fantasy, even though it is usually not my cup of tea but when I read a book which is called "Magma" I just expect something else. In the end I am seriously asking myself why this damn book was called "Magma" after all since there practically was no magma at all! WTF?!
Really, I am still disappointed and not sure if I wanna read more books from TT. Especially since they are called thrillers and I am asking myself: why?!

Magma es una novela de ciencia ficción para jóvenes adultos del autor alemán Thomas Thiemeyer. Fue publicada por primera vez en alemán en 2009 y traducida al español en 2010.
La historia sigue a la doctora Ella Jordan, una sismóloga que descubre extrañas señales en la Fosa de las Marianas. Junto con un equipo de investigadores, Ella viaja al fondo del océano para investigar, donde descubre una misteriosa esfera de piedra. La esfera tiene propiedades extraordinarias, y su descubrimiento desencadena una serie de terremotos y erupciones volcánicas que amenazan con destruir el mundo.
Por alguna razón, me fue bastante complicado leer este libro, creo que en la época había ya demasiados libros copiando la fórmula del artefacto que destruirá el mundo y el "héroe accidental" que logra impedirlo.

Ich bin ein großer Thomas-Thiemeyer-Fan, aber dieses Buch hat mich ein wenig enttäuscht. Zu viele (auch unnötige Schauplätze: Was soll die Reise nach Sibiren? Das Tunguska-Ereignis hätte man auch so erwähnen können.), zu viele Personen und die erfundene Welt in dem (Achtung Spoiler!!) parallelen Zeitstrang ist mir einfach zu platt; mit höher emtwickelten Affen a la Planet der Affen und fliegenden Segelschiffen a la Steampunk. An sich mag ich Genre-Vermischungen sehr, aber das hier ist mir zu sehr durcheinandergequirlt und nicht raffiniert genug. Auch für das Lektorat gibt es einen Punkt Abzug (Ich weiß, dafür kann der Autor nichts, aber es geht hier ja schließlich auch um das ganze Buch als solches). Zu viele Fehler und Wortwiederholungen. Bei Selfpublishern und Büchern von kleineren Verlagen sehe ich da noch drüber hinweg, aber bei einem großen Publikumsverlag und dann noch als Hardcover muss das besser gehen! Trotzdem freue ich mich auf Thiemeyers nächste Bücher, u.a. "Valhalla". Bin schon gespannt.

Überall auf der Welt werden geheimnisvolle Kugeln gefunden, die aus einem fast unzerstörbaren Material bestehen und einen sehr wirksamen Verteidigungsmechanismus besitzen, der sie vor unbefugtem Öffnen schützt.
Die Kugeln sind offensichtlich für diverse Erdbeben und Vulkanausbrüche verantwortlich.
Ein Exemplar wurde in ein geheimes Untersuchungslabor tief in den Alpen gebracht und dort vor einer Gruppe hochkarätiger Wissenschaftler über Jahre allen möglichen Prüfungen und Analysen unterzogen.
Auch die Seismologin Ella Jordan wird schließlich in die Untersuchung der seltsamen Kugeln verwickelt und arbeitet hierbei mit einem merkwürdigen Menschen zusammen, dessen Vergangenheit sehr seltsam ist und dessen Fachkenntnisse dubios scheinen. Trotzdem scheint er allen anderen immer eine Spur voraus zu sein.
Schließlich findet Ella heraus, welchen Zweck die Kugeln haben - und daß die Menschen ihre Vernunft unter Beweis stellen müssen, wenn sie nicht vernichtet werden wollen...

Ich mag solche Wissenschaftsthriller ja ganz gerne, ist jedenfalls immer gut Unterhaltung :)

Und auch wenn der Sci-Fi-Anteil wohl nicht für jeden etwas war, ich fand ihn sehr spannend und gut eingebracht.

Mit "Magma" durfte ich vor rund 10 Jahren die erste Kostprobe von Thomas Thiemeyers packenden Thrillern genießen und bin beim erneuten Lesen immer noch begeistert von diesem Roman, in dem sich eine weit vielschichtigere SciFi/Endzeit-Story versteckt, als der Titel zunächst vermuten lässt. Hier liegt meiner Meinung nach durchaus Potenzial für eine Roland-Emmerich-Verfilmung! ;)
Ich bin bei der Bewertung etwas hin und her gerissen, da mir das Ende jedes Mal ein wenig das Herz bricht (obwohl oder vielleicht gerade weil es so gut passt)... Aber aufgrund der fesselnden Schreibweise und der guten Idee bleibe ich tatsächlich bei 5 Sternen.

This book reads like a movie. It is as promised: an ecothriller. But.... with a little sci-fi twist.

I read the Dutch version.
Een van de fijnste boeken die ik ooit gelezen heb. De auteur is geoloog en heeft op heel geloofwaardige wijze een prachtig dilemma neergezet. De karakters zijn eveneens geloofwaardig, hun keuzes reëel en de emoties terecht. Een scifi die nu eens niet direct met ufo's te maken heeft en een prachtige plot heeft. Een pageturner van de eerste orde die gewoon uit moet in één dag. Ik hoop nog veel van deze auteur te kunnen lezen.

Ella Jordan es una destacada sismóloga, conocida por su libro y sus arriesgadas vivencias. Cuando comienza a dar clases en la universidad, solicitan su ayuda para una investigación en la Fosa de las Marianas. Desde ahí, serán numerosos descubrimientos los que realice, se plantearán nuevos enigmas y misterios.
"Magma" enlaza geología y astronomía en un mismo argumento, una novela que te engancha desde el primer capítulo, y que mantiene la intriga hasta la última página.

Für mich hatte dieser Wissenschaftsthriller alles, was ich liebe und bei einem spannenden Buch brauche. Mein Auge blieb nicht trocken, ich war emotional dabei und tief bewegt.

Okay. So Magma was - in a way - completely different from the other books I read so far. I needed a little longer to read it, but that is mostly due to lack of time. Nonetheless I liked it. Especially the cross-references to other books. It's like he's writing in his own little universe :D
