Professor El-Haddad's life is nothing but he's in debt up to his eyeballs, bored to tears at his job, and hasn't dated in years. Not to mention rent is due on his minuscule pod in West West Palm Beach. But none of that seems to matter after an impossible discovery plunges him into an underworld full of thugs, drugs, and digital bugs, cyberpukes and synthesists, anarchists, androids, and assassins. His quest for answers will take him to the edge of civilization and sanity itself in this unapologetic harassment of the novel as art form. Science fiction meets southern gothic in this debut novel that will keep you guessing from the first page to the last!
21Nothing does a phenomenal job of presenting a future plagued by current myriad problems exacerbated by time and ineffectual action, while tempering the mood with bits of absurdity which regularly had me audibly laughing. There is a palpable sense of ruin as the book travels through decaying remainders of society crumbling into the encroaching swamp. As a reader we are not left to stagnate however, as we are shown the rich and expansive setting of 21Nothing through the point of view of multiple diverse characters. Entertaining and thought provoking, well worth a second read.
