Miasto tułaczy

Rate this book

Knew this would be great! 4 stars ⭐️

“Even demons can smile and act like angels.”

Sia lives in a city that floats. It has no connection to any other place, there is no sky - just light grey for day and dark grey for night. No one is able to leave and no one can come in. They’ve been cursed by Baba Yaga, but no one really knows why.
All they know is there are three map pieces, and once found and reconnected the city will be rejoined with the world.

Sia is the only member of her family without magical powers. She works in the Guild as an admin clerk, while all the map makers with their magic get on with the important jobs.

While exploring she finds a secret area, and one piece of the map. But why would be guild have a piece of the map and hide it? And where are the other two pieces?

Wonderful world building, with lots of secrets and gripping surprises. I’m a big fan of Lisa Ludekke and I will continue to read her books!

Another wonderfully imaginative and compelling fantasy from the mind of Lisa Lueddecke – I devoured it in a couple of hours.

Siya is a wry and memorable protagonist, and the concept of a city dislocated from the rest of the world was unsettling and magical at once. Also appreciated the respectful and gentle love interest.

I'd especially recommend this to fans of Strange the Dreamer and Lirael.

A magical retelling of Baba Yaga with vampires, a moving labyrinth of a city, and a sweet, gentle romance. This gave me vibes of Lirael and Howl's Moving Castle (two of my faves!).

A mimo to… no właśnie 🤣❤️ przekonajcie się sami!
Plus mega slavic vibes! 🍂🍁👏🏻

A really fun, fast paced and wholesome read. There was romance in there, but it wasn't so much of a focus point that it got in the way of my enjoyment.
Towards the end I found myself getting a bit impatient with it.
For when you want a nice little underdog adventure story.

A really good fantasy YA read! I’d never heard of this book before I picked it up at the library, drawn in by the cover, description, and the fact that it was a standalone fantasy, and a relatively short one at that, coming in at just under 300 pages. I was intrigued, and honestly the intrigue paid off.

Siya is a young, non-magical, teenager, growing up in a city that has been cursed to wander, by Baba Yaga. Her everyday life feels tedious, as she works as a trainee clerk, at the magical guild, taking notes. She dreams of an adventure, and seeing the sky, the proper one filled with stars, not the greyish-brown filled moving nothingness that surrounds the city. However, when adventure does start to happen, it might be more than she bargained for…

I genuinely loved the main characters, Siya and Feodor, and the themes of the book. It was short and snappy, but I felt like the world was still really well developed, as was the magic, and the story still felt satisfying.

What really intrigued me to the story is the whole main character not having magic but still going on an adventure to defeat the bad guys and get rid of the curse to bring back the wandering city back to their country.

The whole moving city of Shard reminded of the Mortal Engines but also a little bit of the Howl’s house in Howl’s Moving Castle, moving to avoid danger.

Not only did Siya not have magic, she also was brave and smart enough to figure out something was not quite right with the Guild, the people who have magic and are map enchanters (can use magic by mapping out spells and using incantations to produce magic), and find out the truth of what really happened with Baba Yaga, what’s going on with the Queen, and the missing map pieces, all alongside Feodor, the son of the leader of the Guild members but who isn’t as pompous and stuck up as she thought he would be.

"Miasto tułaczy" to lekkie fantasy młodzieżowe delikatnie połączone z baśnią.

Polecam, jeśli szukasz czegoś prostego i niewymagającego 😊

never thought that i would say this but i enjoyed a fantasy book! I absolutely loved it. the whole storyline, characters, plottwist! Omg!!
the romance between Siya en Feodor was very minimal but you just knew there was chemistry and that was just perfect for me. And the ending! omg! i’m blushing, screaming, giggling, kicking my feet.

This book was everything that a novel for the 11-14 set should be! Magic and intrigue, a reasonable (and as it turns out, necessary!) distrust of adults, young people on a quest/mission of their own, a dash of feels but by no means the whole story, and at a brisk pace that kept the plot moving and my interest with each passing page.

In a world where magic by way of maps exists, the city that Siya lives in has literally been blown off the map - a curse was put in place a generation ago so no one from the rest of the country can enter the city, and likewise no one within the borders can leave it. Those who are members of the elite Map Makers' Guild claim they are dedicated to finding the missing map pieces and reconnecting with the rest of the world, and it sure seems that way to Siya, who works as a clerk for the Guild even though she disappointingly has no magic of her own. But instead of being celebrated for helping find one of the lost pieces, Siya is suddenly being hunted by powerful forces. Forming an unlikely alliance with Feodor, a popular and promising young Guild member whose father happens to be in charge of it, the two team up to solve this mystery and locate the reclusive Baba Yaga to try to save them all.

This was a perfect read for me in January because it was cozy without being saccharine-sweet. I have said FOREVER that YA tends to forget about the younger end of the age group while middle grade is a misnomer that really only goes up to middle and upper elementary school. My middle school readers get lost, and I'm deeply bummed that this book was only ever published in the UK and not also the US so I could share it with my students and suggest it for our township-wide Battle of the Books. My critiques are minuscule and few: for one, Feodor being described in the blurbs as Siya's arch-rival or enemy makes no sense to me - they don't even really know each other, and, in fact, there is another young guild member who is far more worthy of that title. Secondly, there were more than a few characters whose names were similar and started with the letter F, which since I was reading fairly quickly got a bit confusing to me at times. But like I said, super minor and at the end of the day, I thought this was a great little fantasy that went a long way.

"Even demons can smile and act like angels."

The City of Lost Dreamers sees a city that has been cursed to be struck off the map, always wondering, by Baba Yaga. Everyone is searching for the lost map that will guide the city back to the rest of the world, and when non-magical Siya accidentally finds it, she quickly uncovers the dark parts of the city. Because there may be a reason why it was cursed in the first place.

I really enjoy Lueddecke's writing, so it was no great surprise to me that I also really enjoyed this book. It had so much charm, the characters were really interesting and fun to read about, and I was really invested in the plot about a cursed city. It is very well-written and atmospheric; we very quickly get a sense of how the magic works and the society in this fantasy world.

As I already said, the plot was very intriguing. We have a lot of moving parts, so you had to pay attention to follow along. But it is so worth it to see how Lueddecke brings it all together.

But where Lueddecke really shines is in her characters. Siya is such an absolute sweetheart, being non-magical in a very powerful magical family. Sure, she gets jealous of everyone else, but she is also very happy with being who she is. She was such an admirable character; I really wanted to be her friend. And her relationship with Feodor was so good. There were so many situations where I was sure that we would go down my dreaded miscommunication-trope to create drama, but not them. They communicated so well, it was quite heartening to see. All in all, they were some really admirable characters!

I was so close to giving it 5 stars, but the ending sort of spoiled it a bit for me. Firstly, it felt very rushed. It is already a very short book, so it could have really benefited from being longer in my opinion. Secondly, the ending took a very heavy turn, but the character reactions felt too light. To be very honest, it almost bordered on the ridiculous. The ending really took me out of the story, which was a shame because I had enjoyed so much of it.

Still, apart from the ending, it was a very good book, and I would still recommend it. A very enjoyable YA fantasy, and I am excited to see what Lueddecke comes out with next.

This book was nothing like what I expected, beyond a really quick, fun read. I did absolutely gulp this down, which was great for an end-of-year attempt to get my "books read" total up! This isn't to say I didn't really enjoy this book, it's just that the blurb didn't seem to set up the book I read very well.

I was expecting a rambling quest to find the pieces of the map, with an enemies-to-lovers romance smouldering away. Instead, what I got was two people uncovering the secrets of the guild that runs their city, finding out it's not as glorious and good as the guild have made out. The pieces of the map aren't really all that hard for them to find because they've been hidden by people holding secrets - so uncovering the secrets brings them to the map.

Also it's not enemies-to-lovers. Feodor is not her worst enemy at all (that goes to a different boy in the book.) Instead she's more resentful of the concept of him, full of magic and going to get a powerful position one day because of it. But she doesn't hate him, because they haven't really interacted, and once they do, they immediately act as friends and then become closer.

To be honest, I prefer that dynamic to enemies-to-lovers, so that was no loss at all for me. I just wish the blurb was a bit more representative of the book. This is a time when my expectations not being met was actually a good thing, because the expectations included elements I'm not a big fan of, but often it goes the other way.

For a book about a magic system that works with maps, I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a map included. Given the city is trapped away from the rest of the world, I didn't expect there to be a world map, but a city map would have been nice and helped to work out where they were when traipsing around the city.
