They’re baaacckk!

When a simple ‘find & fetch’ case throws private investigator Twig Starfig and newly-minted wizard, Quinn Broomsparkle, into the middle of an EBI murder investigation, it’s just another day in the Elder Realm.

If murder were Twig’s only problem, he’d be the luckiest half-dragon in the land. Murder he can handle. Fulfilling his promise to his scheming, power-hungry father to run for a seat on Lighthelm’s city council? Meh, he’d rather face a demon with a toothache.

On top of their case going sideways, and Twig running for a council seat he really doesn’t want, Twig and Quinn are forced to face some unpleasant realities about their budding romance, while still learning how to handle the wizard-familiar bond they now share. Throw in a red fury with abysmal taste in boyfriends, a ghost pirate-parrot who drinks too much, a murderer who will stop at nothing to get what they want, a host of new friends and enemies, and you’ve got a situation where no one is safe and everyone is Fairy Game.

MEGHAN MASLOW is truly a rare breed. No, not a unicorn (although that would be sooo cool). She’s a—gasp!—extroverted writer.

She believes that life is meant to be lived. Preferably with lots of people around. Every day is an adventure, or should be. She’s spent a large portion of her life working and living in various countries in Africa. She’s multitalented, having perfected the art of eavesdropping in bars around the world while chugging local brews, and gabbing with anyone who isn’t quick enough to elude her grasp. She believes kindness is contagious, and learning to laugh at yourself is one of life’s greatest gifts (and challenges). She advocates for social justice, believes storytelling can be transformative, and surprisingly isn’t a misanthrope. She loves travel, reading, world music, Moscow Mules, awkward dancing, dreadlocks, her family, and um… writing.

This is a difficult review. Not because of the book, but because of me. It was hard work, as I fell into a mini slump when I started reading it and could only enjoy the ending without any negative background moods.
A mini slump, because I kept reading, but every page, no matter what book, felt incredibly tough, and writing reviews wasn't really fun.
So I read this book for days and had to take a break after almost every chapter. And even though I enjoyed the book in the end, getting rid of the slump, there's still a hint of annoyance left, and that has nothing to do with the book.
I think I would have enjoyed the book more at a different time. Even if it is a little less good than the first one. I think the plot is a little too chaotic, even if that suits this chaotic group of characters. Maybe the author wanted too much, but I'm a little unsure.
In any case, all sorts of strange things happen and we meet new interesting characters, and the relationship between Twig and Quinn takes on a new depth, even if it is laced with some drama.
I really like how everything turned out in the end and how much more interesting everything became.
The interactions and the fun that all of this brings are definitely outstanding. I also particularly liked the family developments with Twig and that we get to learn more about his father.
Not to forget Bill, my little star of the series—I love this demon.

Bill wrung his hands together. “I want what you and Quinn have. Until you two, I never had real family or friends. I shouldn’t hope for more, but I do. Demons aren’t supposed to love or be loved.” 🫠🫠🫠

“You realize that means we should contact my father, right?”
“Any boner I had just disappeared. I think my balls crawled up inside my body, too. I may never get them back.” Quinn elbowed me.
🤣😂🤣

“Twig, I’m leaving you in good hands. Answer the agent’s questions to the best of your ability.”
Translation: Don’t be overly helpful, but don’t look like you’re obstructing the case.
“And be respectful.”
Translation: Let him think you’re an idiot so he doesn’t probe too deeply.
“Remember, son, you’re a Starfig.”
Translation: Don’t fuck this up, idiot.
Ah, my dad gives me all the warm fuzzies. Quinn’s spine straightened against my chest. He was becoming fluent in Starfigese and I could tell he was pissed off on my behalf. I hugged him closer, let him know to remain quiet.
“Sure, Dad. Thanks for stopping by.”
Translation: Fuck off.
See, I could do it, too.

***A bazillion utterly bewizarded and bedragoned stars for the audiobook***

***4 befairied stars for the story***

Greg B. is a wizard par excellence himself, I swear. He once again sold me a story beyond my limited go-to genres and made me enjoy the hell out of it.

Oh, and I want a Cookie myself! Umm, the furball kind, not the tasty ones, although I wouldn't mind those, either. ;-)

This took me waaaaaaaaaayyy to long to finish and I have no excuse, other than I think I might be in a slump.

The story was quite fun at times and the menagerie that Twig and Quinn managed to gather around them (seriously, they need a castle if their clan continues to grow like this... *sidenote: I hear the residence of Nyx is available;-) was entertaining and inventive.
One thing’s for certain Meghan Maslow is not lacking in the imagination department.

One of my main issues with this one draws back to book 1 though, and Quinn’s indentured servitude and the evil, EVIL Unicorn known as Brandsome.
Why he is still breathing with all of his limbs attached, has me scratching my head.
description
Especially considering Twig and his dragon’s tendencies to see red every time Quinn is in danger or stubs his toe.
I understand that Twig can’t just kill everybody willy-nilly ("Do no harm... First." Afterall) but it bothers me GREATLY that there were no consequences for the rape and torture of Quinn for 3 years.
Because, let’s be honest, that’s what it was.

And this brings me to THE scene in this book. The scene where Quinn is pushing the boundaries BIG TIME!
Twig has said (more than once) that he is not ready to bottom, that he does not feel safe like that and that he doesn’t want it, but when they follow a vampire into a sex-club (where Quinn was often taken when he was with Brandsome = abused *ugh*) the owner sprays them with some sort of powder (Viagra and ecstasy in one lovely combo /s) Quinn’s inner ‘Dom’ shows up and he basically tells Twig to spread ‘em, and then "goes to town"
It was… Disturbing, to put it mildly, and what bothered me even more is in the next chapter they have this convo:
“Hey, breathe, Twig. It’s all right.”
Was it? I didn’t think so. “The magic . . .”
Quinn rolled to my side, sat up. “Pushed us along, but didn’t change what we wanted.”
“I-I didn’t want that.” Did I? I mean, I did. But no, I didn’t. It was all so confusing.
Quinn’s eyes widened, his cheeks going pale. “Then I-I forced myself on you.”
“What? No, no you didn’t.”

description
I was not... All-together comfortable reading the previous scene and then this; it was murky waters at best, considering they were under the influence and not of sound mind at the time.
What makes it even IFFIER for me is the imbalance in their relationship, since Quinn wields an immense amount of power over Twig. And I DO understand their reasoning for not mating, but their relationship reads unequal at times.

Another issue I have with this story is Twig’s parents (SHOCKER for those of you who know me😉) and their weird behavior and Twig’s acceptance of said behavior.

We get to meet Twig’s mother here and that meeting and the subsequent excuses and forgiveness going ‘round was all-together lackluster -IMO.
As I understand it, Twig’s childhood was LITTERED with neglect, bullying and fights and to listen to his mother now, saying it was for his own good, had me doing a doubletake!

Next we have Twig’s father. And his OBVIOUS disdain for Twig, Bill and Quinn had me wondering why Twig would continue to allow him into their home as well as fall in line every time Auric commands something.
I know he provided the residencies for Quinn and Bill, but every time he visits he calls Quinn a whore to their FUCKING faces and he calls for putting Bill down again and again. And Twig... Twig just lets it happen.
I am CONFUSED about the lack of backbone, considering the rest of the characterization of Twig, and his unwillingness to stand up to his horrible father (it finally happens, but it took waaaaaaaaaayyy to long!)
description
Scratch that, I just have a lot of opinions on this matter.

All in all I DO enjoy the universe and the imagination going on here though. I enjoy all of the WONDERFUL crazy creatures that show up and I like their clan, and how it’s slowly growing.
But sometimes, I feel, that things are mentioned and then left behind, like the 6-headed dog that Twig should have taken home -IMO.
It seems, once in a while, that Maslow’s imagination has taken off without her, she then reins it in again, but doesn’t completely finish that train of thought.
Another example is 'Cookie' the furball-thingy. I’m having a tough time imagining how she/he looks and where their noises come from since they’re all fur.

In the end I AM curious about the next one, since there is unfinished business here (not a cliffy, but the whole story arc is not resolved yet and there are more things to come -S.O.B.).
I will give it a go, since this one DID have great moments and fun characters and a universe that was quite interesting.

Overall a highly entertaining sequel!

This continues to impress with a large contingency of fantastical beings, implementing this time around dark elves, crooked dwarves, an imp, a vamp, and a goblin, not to mention gargoyles, more dragons and demon goodness, hellhounds, griffins, and garden gnomes galore!

What failed for me just a tad was that this was on the side of too long, mostly encompassing Twig and Quinn’s intense but new, relationship. Both these guys have a shit ton of issues regarding their pasts, regarding their need for independence and control, and when you toss in wizard/familiar dynamics with a potential mate bond messing with their magical mojo, their relationship is anything but easy. Hence, they debated, they argued, they avoided talking at times, they went caveman on each other. It was repetitive with circular arguments going round and round making my head spin and decreasing my enjoyment a bit…. BUT!!!

All in all, the story arc, the set up for the next sequel was impressive, delivering a well thought out mystery steeped heavily in fantasy. There were also some enlightening answers about Twig’s background, and seeing Twig and Quinn grow their own special brand of family (which was absolutely the best part) plus having some nice smexy obviously didn’t hurt things at all. Most importantly, I was entertained, especially with the last 3rd of the story which was crazy intense, leaving me worn out and affected in all the best ways. The dangling new threads left by Maslow only reassuringly solidified that more is to come for this unique series!

I ❤️ this series.

It's action packed fun and lighthearted. In other words, exactly what I need right now.

Twig, Quinn and their rapidly growing pack have wormed their way into my heart precisely because of that inclusion. Whether you're a half-dragon, half-fairy, a human wizard, a red fury demon, an alcoholic pirate parrot or whatever the heck Cookie Wookie and her pride are, you can find a home in this "band of misfits".

I'm not sure I loved this one as much as the first but it definitely had its moments. From the investigation to Quinn and Twig trying to navigate their budding relationship including the potential repercussions of a mating bond to all the high council shenanigans to the touching moment between Twig and his mother there were several high points and a couple of stellar sexy times scenes too!

Lastly, I cannot imagine experiencing this series without Greg Boudreaux at the helm. He's the best and I can't wait to see what's up next for Twig and the gang.

2020 ebook review
A complimentary ebook was provided in exchange for an honest review.

The below is certainly true, but I want to elaborate on book 2. Sometimes sequels aren't as good as the original. That's just the way it goes. And then there are sequels that are equal to the first or even surpass it. With Be Fairy Game, Meghan really showed how much she cares for her craft and characters. She wasn't going to give us some fluff read with no depth or substance. Rest assured, for those of you who enjoy series, where the same characters continue and grow in their relationship as an established couple, this is that series. Yes it's a fantasy comedy, with hilarious LOL moments, but it's got serious parts too. And whoa! Is there a lot going on. I forgot how much happened in this series which makes being able to read so much easier.

Copied from book 1 ebook review
I don't know about everyone else, but me, there are just some books I want to experience EVERYTHING. I first listened to this story and my enjoyment was beyond words. When the chance to actually read the written words on page came my way, I had to jump on the chance. Again, there are just some books I want to absorb in every way and I could SAVOR the written words. Take my time, practically molest the characters, lol. In audio it's harder to go back and re-listen to a passage as opposed to just flipping a page. When something is funny, or complicated, I want to read it several times to get the full impact.

These are characters and stories I will read over and over and never get tired of. Seriously, if you don't know this series, this needs to move to #1 on your to do list.

Highly, HIGHLY recommend. Oh, and I couldn't help but hear Greg's voice for the characters. 😁😏💋

Meghan Maslow is a SUPER talented author who I wish the best of success.

All the stars!!

This series is my happy place. And so are cute kittens so this is the best way I can express how I feel. :)

I love Twig, Quinn, Bill and now Cookie!!! Cookie is a new character and we don't know what she is, beyond a cute little furball with healing abilities. She is too sweet!

I listed to the audio and once again Greg Boudreaux did an amazing job. Amazing isn't a good enough word. There are no words good enough to describe how well Greg does with this series. ALL THE STARS for the audio, and the story. I am just in love with this series and DEMAND everyone get it. NOW! :D

There is so much going on in this installment, attempted assassination, treasure hunting, suspect tailing, family problems, battles, political elections, demons, and of course dragons and wizarding. ;D

Twig and Quinn are hired to find a special object and this starts a series of events that are too funny. Add in Twigs father, Bill and his boyfriend, and now the adorable Cookie, and you have a crowded story with so much entertainment I didn't want to stop.

And nope, I am not saying more. You will just have to get the book - cough - AUDIO - and experience this for yourself. So much fun! And I know what the next book is going to be about! And I'll tell you - Quinn has been summoned by the wizard (or was it magic?) council. Remember, Quinn was made a slave to what's his name unicorn in book 1 to pay his debts because Quinn didn't become a full fledged wizard. And he didn't become a full fledged wizard because he couldn't find his familiar, which turns out to be Twig, the Dragon. :D Now that Quinn has found his familiar and is a full blown wizard, those jerks from the council want him to appear before them. Blah! :D

I can only imagine what those people are going to say to Quinn and I am so excited to hear what Quinn and Twigs response will be. I am like an evil villain rubbing my hands in glee I am so excited for book 3.

I just love, love, love, love this series and this book. The author manages to perfectly blend the romance, humor, action and the sexy times into one awesome whole. The character's living in this book quickly become good friends and are perfectly imperfect. Story wise, the author did an excellent job of maintaining the suspense and mystery throughout the entire book. I cannot wait till book three is finished and I get to spend some more quality time visiting this world and its people once again!

Twig Starfig and Quinn Broomsparkle are back for another adventure. This time the half dragon/half fairy investigator and his wizard mate become deeply entangled in a murder-mystery when a new case throws them in the middle of a power grab for a mythical hammer.

Shit’s getting a bit crazy and dangerous in the Elder Realm for Twig, Quinn, and their demon friend Bill, what with their investigation going sideways and Twig’s father constantly popping in to nag Twig about running for a seat on the Lighthelm town council.

On top of all of this, Twig and Quinn still haven’t officially completed their mate bond, both struggling with the potential impacts it might have on their autonomy and their relationship in general.

The stakes are high and are getting higher every day, but Twig and Quinn make one hell of a team, and with their friends, new and old, they might just be able to solve the mystery and save the day, all while growing closer and more in love than ever.

I enjoyed this story a great deal; possibly even more than the first book.

Maslow has blended so many genres I love here and she does it with a skilled and imaginative hand. This series continues to deliver some excellent world building, lots of fantastical and kooky characters, a whodunit mystery that’ll keep you intrigued and guessing, a tasty dash of romance and passion, and plenty of fun and frivolity to keep the overall mood light and playful.

This one took me longer to read than usual, but I’ve decided that was more to do with my mood and social schedule than any kind of disinterest in the story itself. Once again, I enjoyed the journey Twig and Quinn went on. I particularly loved the secondary characters (Cookie was adorable and damn handy in a dire situation) and I’m now super psyched to see what comes next, not only for Twig and Quinn, but (especially) for Bill .

Exhilarating!

I'm having so much fun reading this series, numerous adventures, so many intriguing plots, the comedy is so good, I laughed many times, it's all around the story, even when you're not expecting it, I just adore an easy reading to have fun, so well written, so rich characters, every one of them, I'm absolutely in love with the main characters, the love between them are so sweet and hot, I love their chemistry, how they interact and grow through the story, how they care is really adorable, the sex scenes are just perfection! The story was very interesting and unexpected, I enjoyed deeply! Congratulations to Meghan Maslow!!!

I have this book on Audible too, another spectacular performance from Greg Boudreaux, what a beautiful voice, astounding acting, I appreciate so much to hear fully committed narrator, his ability to make different voices is really impressive!

One of the best narrators, congratulations!!!

This wasn't quite as much fun as the first one, though it certainly had its highlights, namely Cookie, who I kept picturing as a tribble. A tribble with some very plot-convenient abilities.

The mystery was a bit convoluted as Twig and Quinn try to hunt down an infamous troll hammer that keeps eluding them, and Twig's also having to manage the election campaign his scheming dad wrapped him into. Since I probably won't remember much of it in a few weeks:

I'm not really jiving with this whole wizard/familiar thing between Quinn and Twig. Twig made a big deal over it in the last book because Quinn bonded with him without full disclosure, and now it's just a thing between them. I feel like he got over it a little too quickly. The few times Quinn has to "pull rank" in this one were not pleasant to read about, even if a couple of those times were necessary, and he's a bit of a hypocrite each time he does it. I would've preferred more apologizing over it at the least. *shrug*

So this was a little uncomfortable at times and not quite as carefree as the first one to make up for the power imbalances that peeked out now and again. Especially when everyone kept pushing Twig aside to hit him over the head with the Very Important Lesson of learning to rely on others. I was starting to think he'd get sidelined for the entire book, but thankfully that wasn't the case.

There's a reason I've rated this book pre-release!! Read on for the explanation ... trust me, it'll make COMPLETE sense!!

*****

WHAT KIND OF A FUCKING ASSHOLE GIVES A BOOK ONE [1] STAR BEFORE THE BOOK HAS EVEN RELEASED?!!? I'll note that I am HIGHLY doubtful that this person received an ARC or is a reviewer!!!!! With that being the case, it's my natural inclination to conclude this person is JUST an asshole douchebag!!!

I gave this book 5 stars to counter the 1 star this person gave this UNRELEASED book!! Once the book releases and there are more GENUINE ratings, I'll clear my 5-star rating until I READ the book (unless of course I feel very compelled to leave my rating as is, because it turned out being as amazing as it sounds) :-D!!

I really enjoyed book 1, and #2 follows very much in its steps, although the tone is a little bit more serious. Not so serious that we don’t get a lot of banter and fun, though.

Maybe Ms Maslow’s humour isn’t for everyone, but I do like my puns and word jokes, and there’s plenty of that! I’m also still fond of the way preconceived ideas of fantastical beasts and beings are constantly challenged. Bill (the nerdy demon) is my top favourite. You just got to love that guy!

Trig and Quinn’s relationship was very much at the beginning at the end of book 1. There’s a lot to resolve, most importantly the ‘power issues’ between them.
The balance of power between them is tricky, with Quinn at the upper hand as the wizard who can order Trig as his familiar to do his bidding. Something Trig isn’t totally comfortable with.

It’s inevitable that this has an effect on what’s happening in the bedroom, where Trig is the one usually in charge. The scene where he, influenced by a sexual drug, gives up his dominance to Quinn left me a little uncomfortable, particularly considering Quinn’s past as a sex slave.

The issues here are huge and really deserve to be explored in depth, but unfortunately the author decides to give more emphasis to the highly adventurous plot. As much as I enjoyed that, I really wanted to see the two guys ‘battling’ this out in more detail.
The problem remains unresolved by the end of the book, with the uncertainty what will happen to them, individually and as a couple, if they decide to 'officially' mate dangling up in the air.

So, there's only one thing to do - head for book 3 to see how this ends.

I've decided to wait for the audiobook to form my final opinion about this sequel. I found it a bit disjointed, like pieces of ideas were flung together. But since I read it in fits and starts, and the bulk of it in my "sick bed" yesterday, I think that may have colored my impressions. So! Waiting on the audio before I write my final review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

In this second book in the Starfig Investigations series, we continue the story of Twig and Quinn. This book takes place a few months after the end of By Fairy Means or Foul and we find the lovers in a pretty good place. Well, not literally, as their latest case has gone off the rails. As per usual. This series definitely needs to be read in order, but I wholly suggest you do read it, as it just keeps getting better.

What I particularly enjoyed about this book was the emotional and relationship development going on. Twig and Quinn are in love, but that doesn’t mean everything is perfect. Both men need to grow and learn, and I love that they do. Twig, especially, needs to reconcile his own feelings and emotions with that of his dragon. And his dragon is incredibly dominant. I loved the way he opened up and admitted his feelings, and also the way he finally accepted his made clan, of which he is the alpha.

Another hit in this paranormal romance and mystery series

This book got even more crazy than the first one, and that's going some!

I liked very much seeing the found family aspect of the first book expand even more in this one and it was very interesting to get a look at Twig's dragon mother. I liked her a lot!

Poor Bill goes through the mill in this book two and I wanted to hug him so much. We also see the clan expanded with the introduction of a tribe of garden gnomes and a mysterious furball creature which reminded me very much of the Star Trek tribbles!

Twig's dad also has some interesting appearances and I'm dying to know what's going on with him and his fellow High Councillor!

Overall this was another fab read.

An excellent sequel of Twig Starfig and Quinn Broomsparkle with their clan. I love that the Starfig-Broomsparkle clan keeps growing with fantastic characters, like Cookie the furball, and the garden gnomes. I'm sure the next books will bring out more fun creatures as well.

In this book, Twig's amazing mother appears (she kicks every other dragons' ass!), also apparently Twig's father might have his own lover (gasp!), and with the introduction of an EBI (or Elder Bureau of Investigations) agent, I think Maslow will have an on-going arc that spans multiple books (in this case, a "mysterious" organization that plans to murder Twig's father).

One thing that doesn't make me happy is the continuation about the "will they or will they not finish the mate bond" - due to Twig's uneasiness of being dominated by his wizard. I hope that this 'issue' is settled on book #3. I just want the series to focus on the fantasy-adventure aspect (and romance too, but not about the "who's dominate whom" hierarchy)

I wish I can say more about the plot, but my eyes already set to read the next book instead. And it seems that it will be written from Quinn's perspective for a change. So yay!

This book confused me so much. I've never simultanously hated & loved a book more in my life. Starting off, a lot of my complaints from the 1st in this series have been fixed in this book. The humor in the 1st book was very corny & cliche. Parts of this book, however, are witty & are formed through clever dialogue & ridiculous circumstances. Another big improvement are the actions scene. When the action picks up, it is sooo good & I am invested. Now, a very big issue for me with this 1 is the dialogue. It's soooo repetitive. I'm pretty sure at least 68% of the dialogue in this book is literally the same but worded differently. Like how many times does the main character need to mention that he's a fairy/dragon hybrid before I understand that he's a fairy/dragon hybrid? Wait... so he's a fairy/dragon hybrid? Yes he is a fairy/dragon hybrid. LIKE I GET IT! HE IS A FAIRY/DRAGON HYBRID😂 and the long drawn out declarations of love that happen every couple of pages are worse. The main character keeps bringing up that his love and his friends are now family and he needs to protect them. He has this conversation with them at least once a chapter & rather than sweet it came off as just whiny to me. There is just so much of this book that spends time reiterating things that have already been reiterated several times and at times it wore me down. That being said, i am actually low key invested in these characters and would like to find out what happens to them. Also the main characters mother seems like a bad bitch & I'm hoping to see a lot more of her. We stan strong female characters.

3.5*

I adored the first book, This one took me quote a bit to get through. There were some really good parts/scenes/new characters, but then there were some parts that were dragged out and I didn't quite care about them. Which then would lead me to put the book down and walkaway for awhile.

That being said, I enjoyed the outcome and am excited for the future of this unlikely trio of a clan. (Plus a ghost bird)

Reread/relisten. Same as before. Loved getting Bill in the mix with Twig and Quinn now on to the third!

4 stars

I enjoyed this one more than book one. Bill is such a great secondary character, hope we get more of him next book too or even better he gets his own book! Haha

Twig and Quinn are a good pairing, yes they have their issues, but they always come back together and I love that.

Can’t wait for book 3!
