Sally Morgan is recognised as one of Australia's best known Aboriginal artists and writers. She is one of a number of successful urban Aboriginal artists.
Sally was born in Perth in 1951, the eldest of five children. As a child she found school difficult because of questions from other students about her appearance and family background. She understood from her mother that she and her family were from India. However, when Sally was fifteen she learnt that she and her sister were in fact of Aboriginal descent, from the Palku people of the Pilbara.
This experience of her hidden origins, and subsequent quest for identity, was the stimulus for her first book My Place published in 1987. It tells the story of her self discovery through reconnection with her Aboriginal culture and community. The book was an immediate success and has since sold over half a million copies in Australia. It has also been published in the United States, Europe and Asia.
Her second book Wanamurraganya was published in 1989. It is the biography of her grandfather, Jack McPhee. She has also written five books for children.
As well as writing, Sally Morgan has established an international reputation as an artist. She has works in numerous private and public collections in Australia and the United States, including the Australian National Gallery and the Dobell Foundation collection. Her work is particularly popular in the United States. Her work as an artist is excellently described and illustrated in the book Art of Sally Morgan.
She has received many awards, including from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission. As a part of the celebration in 1993 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, her print Outback was selected by international art historians as one of 30 paintings and sculptures for reproduction on a stamp representing an article of the Declaration.
My Place remains her most influential work, not only because of its very wide popularity but also because it provided a new model for other writers, particularly those of indigenous background.
She is currently Director of the Centre for Indigenous History and Arts at The University of Western Australia.
A lovely Disney Animated Classics retelling of Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas. It originally started as a three-page poem that Burton wrote whilst he was employed at Walt Disney Feature Animation. It quickly became a classic, blending Halloween and Christmas together. This book is illustrated with original concept art, sketches, and paintings from when the movie was in production. I am a huge fan of stop-motion animation, so naturally love the finished movie so much, and it’s nice to see the behind-the-scenes artwork whilst reading this beloved classic. There are some extra details written about the production of the film at the end of the book as well for those interested.
This animated classics series is really starting form into a great collection, the latest timely release ready for christmas will appeal to fans both young and old.
What I really appreciate about these books are the simplistic storytelling for the children whilst the various sketches and concept art will appeal to the adults.
The idea that Jack Skellington has been inspired to bring Christmas to Halloween Town only for a darker twist on the festivities is such cool concept.
A film that is so visually creative really lends itself to this format and makes a welcomed addition to the collection.
Loved it of course but it would’ve been good to have more of the artwork and maybe a bit more detail in the writing/ more speech just to add a bit more to it!
This was a fun edition. It reads along as if you were watching the movie. The paintings, story sketches, and concept art that are included were fantastic. This is an oversized hardcover.
This book was so cute, and knowing the story by heart, I could see all the scenes happening! I loved the quick lil story and loved that they put in the exact lines from the movie sometimes. Made me want to re-watch this movie again and again! Also the art in this book is absolutely stunning, love all the concepts for the different characters and scenes! Definitely would recommend to any nightmare before christmas fan!
The story is very short and lacks a lot of the details from the movie but the concept pictures / illustrations are so pretty! I especially loved the one with scribbled instructions on how to build Sally‘s doll.
Loved the concept art and sketches as always in this series. The pictures of the animation puppets were a great addition as well and I especially liked the drawing of Sally and the notes on her dress. 4 stars because the story is missing some details and they could’ve matched the images better with the text, for example the kiss at the ending
My favourite movie of all time is in a book, I've read the original by Tim Burton and now I have got my hands on this gorgeous thing! The cover is to die for 😍.
We all know the story: Jack Skellington the Pumpkin King wants more in life, he wants excitement and adventure. He discovers Christmastown and wants Christmas to be a part of their life in Halloweentown.
This book is full of kidnapping, excitement, designing, terror and of course love 🖤.
Besides the stunning leather binding, this entire collection just doesn't do it for me. I guess I just prefer reading stories in entirety regardless of whether I am familiar with the tale, not random chunks with mismatched artwork.
This book retells the story of The Nightmare Before Christmas, alongside art from the film and its development. At times it was more of a summary than retelling and a longer, more detailed story would have been more enjoyable to read. However, the artwork in this book was easily the best thing about it. From concept art to paintings, to pictures of some of the puppets used in the film, it was all incredibly stunning and a great insight into its production. At the end, there was a little information on just a few of the artists who contributed to the film and whose work is in this book, which was a nice if unfortunately short addition.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favourite films, and even though this was a little less detailed than I would have liked, it was still a lovely book filled with art that definitely made it worth reading. For fans of the film, I would certainly recommend this book.
Rating - 4/5 ★★★★

Beautiful book with gorgeous illustrations from the original concept art. Tells the story of Jack and Sally and could see each word as though it was the film. At the end it interestingly has information about those that worked on the film and what other things they have worked on since. The cover of this book is absolutely beautiful and is a lovely keepsake of my favourite film!
