Phoebe was raised by her adoptive father, Eric--a powerful vampire of the Nightlord breed. Who better to raise a soulless infant than an undead monster?
He did his best to raise her right. He saw to her education, picked a culture for her to grow up in, taught her to use her powers, and took her on tours through a thousand alternate histories-and alternate futures! She's learned to shoot, to fight, to cast spells, and to take anything a hostile universe can throw at her.
But there comes a time when every child has to step out of the nest, spread her wings, and fly.
Garon Whited was supposedly born in 1970, but the original birth certificate is suspiciously unavailable and other records do not agree. After spending some years in college playing role-playing games, he finally settled down into a steady job working with computers—and still plays role-playing games. He finally joined a radicalized group of jellyfish-herding nomads. Having fought zombie dolphins, quasi-corporeal wine and spirits, as well as brain-sucking mole rats, he is uniquely qualified to write fantastic fiction. His subsequent attempts at professional salsa repairman and ley line salesman met with similar success. An affinity for science fiction and fantasy has condemned him to write whenever he has a chance, despite therapy involving shocks and rubber hoses. He claims he lives on this planet, but impartial observers have expressed some doubt. He currently lives in Texarkana.

Okay,.. so I do not want to say this but I feel it needs to be said.
Phoebe is an idiot!
Not just slightly stupid but absurdly and unbelievably so. There are so many points in the story where it gets unbelievably moronic and contrived that I feel hard pressed not to give a dumpster rating for the whole book. Being a fan of this series it really is painful listening to this book. Just to much contrived stupidity to progress a plot which I found mindboggling. Not as in it was hard to parse but in the sense that it was not rational or believable at all.
I have 2h20m left of the audiobook as I type this review and the only reason I will keep listening, is to not miss out on any parts that may be pertinent to future books in the Nightlord series.
Sigh,.. I was just so glad upon finding this book while scrolling through the latest releases on audible, now though all I feel is disappointment.
Phoebe's epic story! (Hopefully the first of many)
No spoilers! At last we get to see Eric from an "outside his own head" perspective. Phoebe is a young adult who is trying to live her life while battling crime, teaching a very bad reverend some humanity, manners to a werewolf and missing her father dearly. Oh don't forget our favourite dog, Guss! Not everything goes as planned, but she does understand Eric and her childhood better through her own experiences. Enjoy Phoebe's epic tale! And if you don't know who her father is.. you should probably read the Nightlord series 🥰 Garon thank you for another great adventure. With gratitude and appreciation Channa.
I enjoyed this a lot. I did find some of Phoebe's decision-making frustrating but I also think I get what the author was getting at; she is a young woman, striking out on her own after having lived in the shadow of her father who repeatedly told her to just strive to do better than him.
I'm not sure how successful that was to explain why she wouldn't kill her story boss in the first chapter but I do understand how you can have blinders on in life and just not see the forest for the trees. She wanted to punish and maybe redeem him rather than just kill him like murderhobo father.
Regardless, I enjoyed the ride and look forward to future installments of her story.
So when "the priest" is one of the main causes of her best friend parent's death, Rusty, the priest, deserved to be punished. But when the priest killed her dog, the priest deserved to die.
There is so many things wrong in this book when it comes to Phebbe's logic. Her motivation is based on personal point of view. If it paints her the good guy, it is the right thing. If it kind the skewed from her belief , her action is to do the obvious is questionable. Her character needs to grow up.
Cool to be part of the same universe as Nightlord, without the super overpowered main character. It was a fun filled adventure, and I can't wait to hear more from Phoebe. The book had A LOT more impact being paired with Penumbra, when you realize that her dad is never coming back. I read these two books back to back and it really made me appreciate From His Shadow much more. I think it has the potential to be a great subset of books with Phoebe and Dusty as the main protagonist.

First off, i’m very happy they released a book version, as i thought this was just gonna be an audiobook exclusive! I also enjoyed the change of pace where Phoebe is not all powerful or immortal, so has to solve things differently! Thanks for another great book, can’t wait for the next one!
