Burning Cove #7

The Bride Wore White

Rate this book
A psychic desperate to escape her destiny—and a killer—finds her future in the coastal town of Burning Cove in New York Times bestselling author Amanda Quick’s latest novel.

Being Madame Ariadne, Psychic Dream Consultant, wasn’t Prudence Ryland’s ideal gig, but it paid well which was reason enough to do the work—until she realizes that her latest client intends to kill her. But Prudence, a master at reinvention, finds a new job and home as far away as possible and is finally able to relax—which turns out to be a big mistake. Letting her guard down means being kidnapped and drugged and waking up in a bloodstained wedding dress in the honeymoon suite next to a dead man. With the press outside the hotel, waiting with their cameras and police sirens in the distance, it’s obvious she’s being framed for the man’s murder. Prudence knows who is responsible, but will anyone believe her?

It doesn’t seem likely that rumored crime boss Luther Pell or his associate, Jack Wingate, believe her seemingly outrageous claims of being a target of a ruthless vendetta. In fact, Prudence is convinced that the mysterious Mr. Wingate believes her to be a fraud at best, and at worst: a murderer. And Jack Wingate does seem to be someone intimately familiar with violence, if going by his scarred face and grim expression. So no one is more shocked than Prudence when Jack says he’ll help her. Of course, his ideas for helping her involve using her as the bait for a killer, but Prudence feels oddly safe with Jack protecting her. But who will protect Prudence from her growing fascination with this enigma of a man?

While this is #7 in a book series it can be read as a stand-alone. I have read #3, 4, 5 & 6 – so far #5 was the best.

I am not a fan of the whole paranormal theme and that’s what #7 is all about (as was #6).

In San Francisco a ‘Psychic Dream Consultant’, Prudence Ryland aka Madame Ariadne, becomes concerned when she gets a vibe that the client in front of her is going to kill her. No sooner has she had this vibe the man passes out in her reading room and later dies in hospital.

Prudence/Madame is so unnerved she gives up her Dream Consultant work and gets a job at a library as a researcher. Not long into this job she is abducted from the library and wakes up in a hotel room dressed in a wedding dress covered in blood beside a dead man. Clearly something is amiss in her life.

She manages to escape before the police arrive and contacts Luther Pell in Burning Cove to investigate what the heck is going on and make sure she is not blamed for the death of the man in the hotel room.

Upon arriving in Burning Cove Luther puts her in the hands of Jack Wingate to be her protector and investigate how Prudence/Madame happened to end up in a hotel room with a dead man.

Luther and Prudence/Madame turn out to be a perfect match while they work together using psychic powers to figure out the whole mess.

3-stars for Prudence and Luther, but I hope the next book (if there is one) will have nothing to do with the paranormal or dreams, etc. That’s not how the series started.

Another amazing book from The Burning Cove series by Amanda Quick ( Jayne Ann Krentz)!!! This mystery/suspense/thriller romance is what Jayne Ann Krentz is best known for! With Hitchcock like vibes which plays to the mystery and spooky atmospheric undertones that keep you guessing with a large list of suspects and twists and turns around every corner. I did figure out about half way through who the killer was but as always Krentz had a surprise that made me say No shit!😂She is a gifted writer and I should have seen it coming. I loved both Jack Wingate and Prudence Ryland (Madame Ariadne) both are exceptional smart and their chemistry full of push and pull with neither giving in to the other one. After Jack was burned on his face from another case he retreated to A house he bought called House of Shadows to write his book on Crime deduction but when Luther Pell needs him to help Prudence after she wakes to find herself dressed in a wedding gown covered in blood next to Gilbert Dover heir to the Dover fortune she high tails it out of their. Both main characters and side characters are intriguing and the storyline very well paced. I have loved every book from this series but I have to say this is my new favorite! I love the whole paranormal edge to this romance. Theirs not much steam or lovemaking if that's what your looking for. But if you love a great who done it and some awesome writing that doesn't need to use sex to sell its for you!! I love this writer and have read almost every book she's written and her Amanda Quick pen name books always promise to be entertaining with great mysteries and thrills!! Until next time Luv's💕💋

While each novel in the Burning Cove series features one couple and a suspenseful storyline, I recommend reading the series in the order of its release. Characters, locations and references will all be enhanced by doing so.

The tale begins when we meet Prudence Ryland, a Psychic Dream Consultant known to the world as Madame Ariadne. When she realizes her current client intends to kill her, she picks up roots and reinvents herself. Everything goes swimmingly until she wakes up in a hotel room next to a dead man. She flees and reaches out to Luther Pell for help. That assistance comes in the form of Jack Wingate.

From the moment Prudence and Jack met, I loved the back-and-forth barbs and sizzling chemistry. She believes in the paranormal and Jack is grounded in facts. It’s decided she will renew her role as Madame Ariadne to draw whomever is trying to frame Prudence. The tale that unfolds was suspenseful with a clever whodunit and a delicious side of romance.

I am enchanted by Burning Cove and the characters Quick brings to life. Followers of the Arcane Society series will savor references to the series. Prudence is quite intelligent, just like Jack, whose intuition and dreams appear to be in the same realm as Prudence’s gifts. His narrative and ambitions were extraordinary, and seeing these two collaborate and become closer was a pleasure.

The romance felt like a slow-burn as respect came first despite the chemistry. I rooted for them and loved the behinds the scenes matchmaking from other characters.

I devoured their story in two sittings and regret nothing. Except for the fact that I’ll have to wait for the next story in the Burning Cove series. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

The final couple in the Burning Cove series… just as wonderful as the others. Prudence and Jack were delightful, and the last mystery of the series was perfectly fitting.

It’s quick and easy but also miles away from where we started with this series. The heavy reliance on paranormal and dream powers is not really working for me. Burning Cove is still a fantastic setting but even the glamour and mystery is wearing thin. The actual murder/mystery had stronger threads than a couple of the previous books, plotting from A to B to C clear and concise. But the romance was just sort of there and not given any believable growth or depth. A little bit of flash here and there, characters, past and present, I’m already forgetting, and some mediocre danger rounded it all out. Just okay.

very biased review

Amanda Quick aka Jayne Ann Krentz did it again. Another wonderful historical mystery romance set in Burning Cove, with our favorite mystery man Pell and investigator, Raina Kirk. Pell really is a great matchmaker and man of secrets.

This book introduces us to new characters, with a psychic twist. We meet Prudence, a dream reader who has escaped death, not once, but twice and runs to Pell for help in finding out who is framing her for the murder a well-known son of a socialite and business leader. Pell brings in Jake, a man with scars, both physical and mental. From the beginning, we see fireworks. The chemistry is palpable between the characters, and the character development is wonderful. The book is nonstop action with a list of suspects that leave you guessing until the very end who is the mastermind behind all the subterfuge. Loved it.

Prudence Ryland makes her living interpreting dreams for her clients, but pressure from a rich, determined client has her making plans to leave town and pursue other avenues of employment. However, a bad session with a client has her packing up sooner than she planned and moving to Southern California under a different identity. Thing go from bad to worse when she’s drugged and kidnapped, waking up in the hotel room of a dead man, wearing a wedding dress drenched in his blood. Who could be behind this obvious ploy to set her up to take the fall for a murder she didn’t commit? She manages to escape unnoticed but knows she must seek help before her situation escalates further.

Prudence reaches out to Luther Pell, a man with a reputation for fixing problems, for help. Luther and his associate Jack Wingate take on her case and arrange for Prudence to stay with Jack as his personal “psychic dream consultant” and splash it all over the gossip channels to lure the killer out. Jack Wingate believes most in the psychic business to be frauds and con artists, but something about Prudence intrigues him. Jack rubs Prudence the wrong way and so their pairing has some fun verbal sparring, with sparks of attraction flying between them.

The story is set in the fictional town of Burning Cove, California, a beautiful coastal retreat for the rich and famous back in the days of glamorous, old Hollywood. It’s a magical time period to be immersed in and Ms. Quick captures it beautifully.

The Bride Wore White
was an entertaining historical mystery containing a bit of a paranormal aspect and a dash of romance. Action, thrills, and a bit of danger kept me turning the pages to see how it all worked out! This is the seventh installment in the Burning Cove mystery series, but it’s not necessary to read the previous books to enjoy this one. Each has its own mystery and couple it focuses on.

3.5 stars, rounded up for old time's sake.
The paranormal seems to have completely taken over this series. I'm not really complaining, as I like the author's take on people with psychic abilities. However, I sometimes wish she would do a story w/o that theme. Ahem...

In this one our heroine, Prudence Ryland, the sometimes Madame Ariadne, runs into big trouble in the very first chapter. The client who came to Madame Ariadne for a consultation about his dreams had murder on his agenda. Prudence wins that fight, but later circumstances have her fleeing San Francisco for southern California. Another attempt to frame her for murder sends her to Burning Cove to seek help from Luther Pell. Pell assigns Jack Whitaker as her consultant (aka investigator) and the story is off and running.
The mystery is interesting, with a number of possible baddies, and a twist or two. The banter between Prudence and Jack is entertaining, and the romance is believable. There was nothing really new here for those of us who are longtime readers of this author's books. But I was entertained and had a good time.
This series has been building for a while so it would be unwieldy for the author to work in all the previous characters. She does feature Luther Pell and Raina Kirk, who have appeared in almost all of the earlier books, and name checks the hero and heroine of the previous book (When She Dreams). I did expect to meet up with the owners of the Burning Cove Hotel when Jack and prudence were staying there, but that didn't happen. Oh well, minor quibble.

Nostalgic backdrop reminiscent of Old Hollywood golden age detective movies with a zing of the paranormal make for a dazzling 1930’s Era backdrop to the latest Burning Cove romantic suspense. Snappy banter, sizzling attraction, and a twisting mystery captivated from cover to cover.

The Bride Wore White is the seventh entry in the Burning Cove series of moderately connected standalones. I say moderately because there are recurring characters, but no strong series plot threads running through so they could be read standalone or out of order. Personally, I liked getting them in order to understand the backstory of the few recurring side characters.

Prudence Ryland can’t catch a break. Her beloved grandmother passed leaving her the family dream psychic consulting business on her own, her marriage was a failure, her last client tried to murder her, and now someone’s framing her for yet another murder. She’s in over her head so she goes to Luther Pell in Burning Cove to help her get to the bottom of this murder frame up. He assigns Jack Wingate, a criminology consultant, to handle her case. The pair are like oil and water and bristle from the get-go with snarky banter that somewhere along the way smooths out to some fun snappy exchanges.
But, the case brings out the darker secrets in a powerful, wealthy San Francisco business family with Prudence caught at the center of it all.

Yet again, I got caught up easily and fairly flew through the pages as I followed Prudence and Jack to the surprise finish. The Burning Cove setting and Jack’s creepy Hollywood horror house were great for the atmosphere. Wow, talk about dark revenge taking center stage!

Like with most of this series, the romance pair have a sizzling attraction and some good back and forth as they work out the case and have some danger moments. They were a fun pair because they had a playful acrimonious thing going that worked for them. Usually, that gets on my nerves, but I liked it in this case and I liked that Luther and Raina were part of this one.

Another Burning Cove installment was devoured quickly and now I must wait once again. The series will have a wider range of appeal since it blends historical, paranormal, and romantic suspense. Definitely recommend.

I rec’d an eARC via NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.

The Bride Wore White
4 Stars

After awakening attired in a wedding dress and lying next to a dead man, Prudence Ryland (formerly a dream reader known as Madame Ariadne) knows full well that she needs help if she is to learn who is trying to frame her for murder. Jack Wingate, the man chosen by Luther Pell to assist Prudence, is skeptical of both her story and her psychic abilities, but the case intrigues him. Despite Jack's plan to use Prudence as bait, she feels safe with this scarred and enigmatic man. Can Jack and Pru put aside their initial hostility to catch a malicious killer?

Series note: The heroine is a friend of the heroine in book #6. That said, the plot is unrelated, and the book can be read as a standalone.

Krentz/Quick seems to be stuck on the dream reading motif, but unlike her other books with this theme, it seems to work here perhaps because it plays a very minor role in the story, and there are few descriptive passages focusing on dream analysis.

In terms of the romance, Jack and Prudence's interactions are some of the best in the series. Their love-hate relationship progresses in a believable fashion, and their snarky banter is very engaging.

The murder mystery is well-developed with a couple of good twists. Nevertheless, certain aspects of the resolution are anti-climactic, and the villains never pose any real threat, which reduces the tension and suspense.

In sum, this is a fun read and Burning Cove is a quirky and atmospheric setting. It will be interesting to see whether and how Quick continues with the series.

I received this ARC from Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an honest review. I’ve been a huge fan of Amanda Quick’s writing since the beginning and love her wonderful characters and the world that they live in whether it is Burning Cove or somewhere else. I couldn’t wait to read this ARC because I knew that I would once again be absorb into Burning Cove and its characters which are so full of life, adventure and suspense when it come to their romances. The book opens with Madame Ariadna, Psychic Dream Consultant A.K.A., Prudence Ryland knowing that she is about to be murdered. She doesn’t really have any place to go but she manages to escape by casing him to have heart failure and calling the ambulance. She decides that it is time to re-imagine herself and she works at the college's library. She starting to get comfortable working there and she lets her guard down and then she is kidnapped one night and wakes up with a dead and bloody body, Gilbert Dover. She sneaks out of the hotel room and calls Luther Pell to investigate what happened to Gilbert. He puts Jack Wingate on the cases to investigate the crime. Prudence isn’t thrilled with Jack, but decides to have faith in Luther. So, now the adventure, romance and twists really begin. Pick up Quick’s “The Bride wore White” and find out what happens to Prudence and Jack, will they solve the case, fall in love or go their separate ways. I highly recommend this book and any others by Quick!

I gave this one 3 stars . Very unusual for me to rate a Krenz book that low— if the characters ever quit arguing about interpreting dreams ( in my opinion, one of the most boring of the paranormal fields) and the story actually gets moving, I might go back And add another star…

UPDATE:
I’m revisiting Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz’s 1930’s Burning Cove (Hollywood Glamour Nouveau) Historical Romance Suspense Thriller series, currently at 7 bks (so this is the last, for now). I previously read these but now I am listening by audiobook. TBWW delves into new mysteries ultimately resolved in the Burning Cove community. TBWW can be read as a Standalone title but I like this entire series. There is definitely a Nouveau riche/1930’s Hollywood undertone which I find fun & unique. Krentz novels are dialogue driven and move fairly fast with a light tone. I enjoy Krentz’s sense of humor so that’s a plus for me. Several (3?) of the books in this series have the same paranormal sense that other recent Krentz/Castle/Quick books have. Some readers will like this, others not so much. I find Krentz books light, easy de-stressing reads with very little angst (Yay!).

ORIGINAL POST:
THE BRIDE WORE WHITE is bk#7 in Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz’s 1930’s Historical Suspense ongoing series set in a small “Glamor” town an hour+ north (100miles) of Hollywood, CA. The Burning Cove series include a bit of a mystery, a touch of something Psychic and a romance with a HEA. I am enjoying this series.

MY RATING GUIDE: 4 Stars. I truly enjoyed this book. :D. I liked the 1930’s setting, the complex and imperfect characters, and the story/mystery kept my attention to the very end. I read a library copy but plan on purchasing an audiobook when they become available. I’m sure to enjoy this one again.
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I LIKED THIS A LOT; 5= I Loved it, his was great! (I seldom give 5 Stars).

The coastal town of Burning Cove, 1930’s ~
When Prudence Ryland realizes her consecutive careers - first as a dream psychic and then as a para librarian - have both exposed her to mad killers, she knows someone or certain people have fixated on her for unknown reasons. She flees for a second time, landing in the coastal town of Burning Cove, CA, 100miles north of Hollywood.

Jack Wingate is an Investigative Consultant and a friend of Burning Cove’s rumored crime boss Luther Pell. Five months ago Jack was on a consulting job that ended badly (in a terrible accident) which scarred the left side of his face, his shoulder and chest. Jack has been experiencing nightmares and hearing unusual musical chords in the months afterward. As Jack contemplates these changes in his life a strange woman, Prudence, comes to Burning Cove requesting Pell’s assistance in a matter of murder. Prudence believes someone is trying to kill her. Luther Pell assigns Jack to help her.

Comments ~
1) THE BRIDE WORE WHITE is bk 7 in Krentz’s 1930’s Burning Cove Thriller series. TBWW has its own MCs (with slight secondary character overlaps from previous books), its own mystery, and it’s own HEA and No Cliffhangers. TBWW could be read as a Standalone title or out of order, if desired. I prefer to read all Krentz/Quick book series in order, beginning with bk 1.
2) Quick’s male characters are not “Pretty Boys.” Rather, they are determined, bold, driven, loyal men who often face difficult challenges and/or are imperfect, but through sheer focus and intellect accomplish much. These men live by a certain code of honor and they never break it. They are not intimidated by complex women, rather they appreciate them. The women MCs tend to be independent, spirited, complicated, intelligent, resilient, loyal and opinionated and they prefer men who are strong enough to accept them as they are. This pattern continues in THE BRIDE WORE WHITE and I found myself identifying with both the main characters and respecting them as individuals.
3) Amanda Quick/Jayne Anne Krentz/Jayne Castle is one of my favorite authors. Dialogue drives her stories - with quips, humor and spirited connections between the main characters, along with mystery elements and a much earned HEA. Quick novels are perfect when I’m looking for a Pick Me Up read - something light, positive, easy, perhaps ending with a bit of justice.
4) Angst-filled moments and misunderstandings are minimal (which I appreciate).
5) I love the book cover art of TBWW. It’s lovely!

I recommend THE BRIDE WORE WHITE to readers of/who appreciate:
1) Jayne Ann Krentz/AQ/Jayne Castle novels
2) Romance Suspense
3) Historical Romance Suspense
4) Adventure/Cozy Mysteries
5) Light Proximity/Danger trope fiction
6) Intelligent, trustworthy, capable male characters working alongside smart, independent, intrepid women
7) Slightly Paranormal/Psychic novels, with “intuitive”characters (Not shifters, changelings, dark, fae, urban, occult or witchy).

READER CAUTION ~
PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used infrequently.
VIOLENCE - PG. Murders occur but are not described in a dark manner.
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Intimacy occurs (twice?) but the scenes could easily be skipped, if desired.

While I enjoyed this and the surprise ending, it wasn't my favorite book. Maybe this is my fault for jumping into the series at book 7, but thought since the characters in each book are different I could read as a standalone. I love all the psychic aspects and love bringing a romance together with a seer and a skeptic! The dialogue throughout the book just didn't hit the right notes for me and I think a lot of it moved really quickly and I was left wanting more from certain scenes. I think lovers of this series will enjoy this one.

Honestly, my least favorite of the series. There was too much discussion on the paranormal and not as much adventure or mystery. It didn’t even feel like a historical novel because there was nothing that set it in that time. Just an obsession with being psychic.

Very exciting first chapter.

Madame Ariadne touched the rim of a crystal bowl and knew that Thomas Tapson was going to murder her. When they both touched the bowl she knew he was a serial killer. During the reading she noticed his Gold Signet Ring with the emblem of a key on top. Another ring like it will turn up later in the story. She is able psychically overcome him to the point he drops his knife, spasms and passes out. He’s alive but unconscious… she calls an ambulance and moves up her plans to leave the business and San Francisco. Especially when she sees in the morning’s paper that he died in the hospital.

Some months later she is working as a Research Librarian at the Adelina Beach College Department of Parapsychology where she is drugged and kidnapped. And wakes up in a Hotel in an expensive white wedding gown too big for her, covered in blood next to the dead body of Gilbert Dover, heir to a wealthy family corporation based in San Francisco.

She gets away from that trap and goes to Burning Cove where she asks Luther Pell for help. Luther insists that Jack Wingate is the man to see this investigation through and so begins our romance and a convoluted tale of revenge centered around the Dover Family of San Francisco.

Maud was raped when she was 15 and Harley was the result. He shares a distinctive birthmark with the other Dover men. No one knows who he is but Maud.

Rollins also wears a Gold Signet Ring. He’s the one who sent his old boarding school pal to kill Madame Ariadne. Clara wanted her to marry the cruel Gilbert to make psychic grandchildren and hopes of getting control over Gilbert’s vices. Rollins killed his old buddy Tapson in the hospital.

Rollins and Ella killed his brother Gilbert and set up Pru for reasons I won’t go into here.

Harley drove a hallucinating Clara out to Jack’s home, the House of Shadows, and firebombed it to the ground. Pru managed to save Jack’s manuscript that was on her bedside table, but that was all.

A delirious Clara ran off a cliff, Jack and Pru rescued her, took her to the hospital where Ella smothered her with a pillow. She was officially ruled natural causes because of her head wound.

Skipping to the chase…

Harley poisoned himself.

Maud poisoned Rollins, then shot herself.

Ella kidnapped Pru at gun point and directed her to drive to the House of Shadows. Ella was a psychic hypnotist and there was a great psychic battle between the two before Pru prevailed. Jack and Luther showed up in time to get Ella into a hospital and custody. Clara Dover had run Ella’s father out of business and he committed suicide. Her family was destroyed and she set in motion to destroy all of them once she became an adult.

I listened to the latest in the author’s historical romance series set in Burning Cove in the 1930s. I enjoyed the narration, and with a few minor issues liked the story as well.

Prudence has the “family talent,” the ability to read dreams. But her talent goes even further in that she can attempt to change the client’s dreams. As the book opens, Prudence knows her client is trying to kill her. After taking care of the man, leaving him for an ambulance, she’s ready to leave San Francisco and start a new life somewhere near Los Angeles. But when she gets to Los Angeles she discovers that her client died, and she’s been billed as the “nightmare psychic.”

Four months later, Prudence wakes up dressed as a bride holding a knife, and next to her is a dead man with multiple stab wombs. She recognizes the man. He’s the heir to a large fortune. Prudence figures out she’s in a hotel and realizes she needs to escape. While she escapes, she’s now been searched for as a madwoman – although unidentified woman. She needs help and reaches out for Luther Pell in Burning Cove. (she’s apparently living in a different small town).

When Prudence meets with Luther (a continuing rather shadowy figure from previous books) Jack Wingate is there when him. Luther tells Prudence Jack will serve as her bodyguard until they solve Prudence’s problems.

Prudence takes an almost instant dislike to Jack, and it has nothing to do with his badly scarred face. Jack, in turn, knows Prudence is going to be a problem. I liked the interactions between Prudence and Jack; their exchanges are smart and funny.

The mystery itself is fairly complicated, with a whole web of potential villains. I cared less for many of the sections told from the various villain’s POV. If there had been a bit more of Jack and Prudence, and a bit less of the various villains, I would have liked this much more. In the end, I was definitely happy with Jack and Prudence, and could imagine an entire series set around the two of them, and where they end up.

A psychic framed for murder plus a skeptic consultant who takes her case equals an entertaining adventure in The Bride Wore White . Amanda Quick returns to Burning Cove for another round of romance, 1930s glamour, murder, and a splash of the paranormal.

Prudence Ryland left dream reading behind in San Francisco after a client almost killed her. As a librarian in Southern California she’s working toward earning enough money to open a bookstore when she’s kidnapped only to awaken in a bloodstained wedding gown next to a dead man. Who wants to frame her and why? Prudence turns to Burning Cove’s most notorious resident, Luther Pell, for assistance. Luther in turn assigns her case to Jack Wingate, a man with a quick mind and a strong disbelief in the paranormal. Sparks fly between Jack and Prudence from the start and they have entertaining energy. Both are haunted by ghosts of their pasts and it was sweet to see two lonely hearts find their perfect match. In short, I liked them together and that made the pages of this book fly by.

If you’re at all familiar with Amanda Quick’s Burning Cove series (and you don’t have to be to enjoy this book) then you’ll recognize the formula. The protagonists’ search for answers leads them to multiple suspects and a puzzle with some twists and reveals. Though it’s formulaic, I enjoy Quick’s writing and characters, so I was happily along for the ride. Overall I only had two issues with the story. The first is that I wished more time and attention had been put on the romance versus the mystery and the paranormal elements. The second is that the ending was predictable and yet at the same time didn’t feel wholly earned. Still, even with these issues I enjoyed reading The Bride Wore White . Quick’s writing sucked me in for a fast-paced, entertaining ride with a hero and heroine who were fun to spend time with.

This latest in the Burning Cove series stars dream reader Prudence Ryland and consultant Jack Wingate. The story begins with Prudence facing down a murderer who has come for a reading. She uses her psychic talent to make him pass out. It confirms to her that she really needs to change careers.

Her next job is in an academic library filled with male chauvinists. When she's kidnapped and wakes finding herself wearing a bloody wedding gown and next to a corpse, she's sure that someone is trying to frame her for murder. After all, one of her former clients tried to bully her into marrying the man who is now a corpse.

She flees to Burning Cove where Lucas Pell pairs her up with investigator Jack Wingate who is writing a book about criminal profiling. Although Prudence recognizes that Jack has the psychic gift of intuition, Jack is convinced that psychic gifts are not real and thinks Prudence is a fraud. However, he does agree to look into her case and try to find out who is trying to kill her or frame her for murder.

Sparks fly between Jack and Prudence as the danger to Prudence increases. And Jack is more than willing to use her as bait to bring the criminals out into the open.

The story was fast-paced and filled with 1930s historical detail. I loved the growing relationship between Prudence and Jack that began with a lot of verbal sparring. Fans of paranormal mysteries and great banter will enjoy this latest episode in the series.

Prudence Ryland is a third generation dream reader. When she realizes that her current client has come to kill her she revs up her talents and causes him to collapse she quickly leaves San Francisco and moves to Burning Cove. There she sets up a meeting with Luther Pell to ask for help in finding out why she was targeted. Luther introduced her to Jack Wingate a recluse investigator who isn’t sure he believes in psychic talents even if he may have a talent of his own.

Another terrific addition to this fun series. Amanda Quick didn't disappoint me when she added that mention of the old cocktail "the sidecar." It is in every one of these stories and I always look for it 😉

Quite predictable and the title is a spoiler. Still, reading it was enjoyable.
