The Amish Bookstore #1

The Bookseller's Promise

Rate this book
In the first novel of Beth Wiseman's new Amish Bookstore series, a rare, old book may hold answers to a present-day romance.
Yvonne Wilson arrives in Montgomery, Indiana, determined to purchase a rare book on behalf of a client willing to pay her an absurd amount of money for her efforts. Engaged to be married in a few months, Yvonne is thrown off guard when she finds herself attracted to the handsome bookstore owner, Jake Lantz—and now she's asking herself unexpected questions about her future.
Jake Lantz made a promise to his grandfather to never sell the book Yvonne wants to buy, and it's a promise he plans to keep. Jake begins to read the book with Eva, one of his employees, and Eva sees this time together as a way to get Jake to see her in a new light. Eva's loved him for years but senses Yvonne's attraction to Jake right away—and she wonders how Jake feels about Yvonne, an attractive English woman determined to stay in Montgomery until she convinces Jake to sell the rare book.
As Yvonne's, Jake's, and Eva's individual paths merge into something more than they could have imagined, each must face decisions they never anticipated. Will Jake ultimately break his promise to his grandfather? Will Yvonne leave the quaint life she's been living in Amish Country to go back to her fiancé? And will Eva be able to get Jake to see her as more than a friend? The answers just might be buried within the pages of a rare book.

This is an Amish Romance, and this is the first book in the Amish Bookstore series. This book follows three main people in this book (two Amish character and one English). I really loved that this was not the normal Amish Romance, and I love that one English character played on important part of this book. I love that there was an English character that was one of the main characters. The romance in this book was super cute and fun. I also loved the mystery around a book in this book which made the storyline in this book so great. Overall, I found this book fun and cute with a deep meaning put into it. Great Read. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Zondervan) or author (Beth Wiseman) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

What a great beginning to An Amish Bookstore Series that leaves you wanting to go back now. In my opinion this is Ms Wiseman at her best as I became immersed in the old bookstore and a rare book that seemed fascinating to be able to read. I loved that the Amish main characters seemed playful and fun even with the English main character. You even get a few visits to the bookstore by my favorite characters from a previous series. Lizzie and Esther are beloved and their antics crack me up especially when they get involved in others love life. I enjoyed this book tremendously as the tug and pull relationships were spot on and Yvonne’s Faith journey made me cry. I highly recommend even if you aren’t an Amish Fiction lover as this isn’t typical and predictable. It runs a gamut of unexpected situations that keeps you reading way to late.
I received a complimentary copy from the author/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

What a hopeful and uplifting novel! This was my first time to read an Amish romance and first time to read anything written by Beth Wiseman. This book kept my attention. No, it grabbed my attention and after a while would not let go. This is the kind of book I like most to read.

This book had some strange surprises in it. I'm thinking of the walk Jake took with Yvonne to a place he'd been to years earlier. Also, someone's solution for the lovelorn!

These characters worked well together and the book, that special book, was almost a character as well. The story, even with some unusual sub plots, held together well. I never knew I would love reading an Amish romance novel so much. Of course it helped that books were involved. I love to read books and love to read about books.

While reading this I remembered that months ago I bought a Beth Wiseman book, but when it arrived in the mail I realized it was the second book in a series so I never read it. Reading this book, The Bookseller's Promise, made me go back to the online bookstore and order the other two books in that other series, Amish Secrets, so soon I can read them all.

A big thank you goes to Netgalley and Zondervan for allowing me to read and review this ebook version of the book for you. This was my first time to go back to Netgalley in years, and I'm so glad I decided to try this again.

Yvonne Wilson is a book broker, and she is trying to get Jake Lantz to sell her a rare volume. Jake made a promise to his grandfather that he would never sell the book. Yvonne travels to Montgomery, Indiana to convince Jake to sell her the book. Yvonne does not know how anyone can resist $100,000. Yvonne is engaged to marry Trevor in a few months, but she finds herself attracted to the handsome Amish bookseller. She can tell, though, that his employee, Eva is in love with him. Yvonne’s visit along with the rare book is about to change all of their lives. The Bookseller’s Promise by Beth Wiseman is a heartwarming Amish tale. It is the beginning of The Amish Bookstore Novels. This novel is well-written with realistic, developed characters. The story is told from three points-of-view: Eva, Jake, and Yvonne (the Englischer). I like that we get to see things from each of their perspectives, but it does lead to some repetition. I liked this unique Amish novel. It is not your standard Amish romance. Family and faith play a big role in the story. It is important to pray and rely on God. He is there for us in the tough times and the good. Yvonne was raised by her aunt and uncle who are unbelievers. Yvonne does not believe in heaven which surprises Jake and Eva. I liked following Yvonne as she spent time in Montgomery and got to know people. Yvonne is in for a surprising journey. The romance was sweet and amusing at times. It is a clean story with the only PDA being a few kisses. It was interesting learning about the special book that Yvonne’s client desires. I enjoyed the epilogue which paves the way for The Story of Love. I cannot wait to read the next chapter in these characters lives. The Bookseller’s Promise is a touching story with a treasured tome, wedding worries, an unexpected trip, a clamorous client, a bouncy buggy ride, an astounding accident, an extraordinary revelation, and a gracious God.

I received a complimentary ARC of The Bookseller’s Promise by Beth Wiseman from Zondervan through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my ownI enjoyed this story very much about an Amish man who owns a bookstore. Jake inherited the bookstore from his grandfather many years ago. He runs the bookstore with the help of Eva who began working with him when she was 15 years old. She is now 19 and has grown into a beautiful woman. Jake likes her very much but his friend John has told him that he wants to marry Eva when he is financially able. John has finally made his move and has asked Eva out on a date. Jake is devastated and is unsure what to do. In addition to Jake’s dilemma with Eva, he has received a letter from a woman who wants to buy a book that his grandfather gave him many years ago. This book is a very rare, autographed copy and Yvonne has offered him a great deal of money if he will sell it to her for her client. Jake wrote back and told her know that the book was not for sale. Yvonne has decided to come to the store from Texas and talk Jake into selling. While she is there the three become good friends. If you are a fan of Amish fiction I highly recommend this book and I am very excited to have found a new author and series to get into.

When I saw a book about an Amish bookseller, I HAD to get it. Halfway through this one, I ordered the next. It better get here quickly.

Seriously... the layers of this book give it richness and depth that I didn't expect. The Amish life may be a simple one, but it is not simplistic, nor are its people. This book shows a depth to their faith I've not always seen in Amish fiction, so that was a refreshing thing.

If it weren't for two things, this would have been a five-star read all the way. Really, only one knocked off the star, actually. I did find Eva's mother's discussion about grief a bit repetitive as well as... kind of textbook psychological. Nothing terrible. I thought she explained and used it well enough. But it did feel... inserted.

But my real disappointment came with the repeated assurances that faith and trying to be a good person would ensure heaven. The "and" did it for me. If even once I'd gotten the impression somehow that the "trying to be a good person" came as a result of the faith rather than something to be done in addition, I would probably have let it go. However, it wasn't just once--multiple references. I know it's a part of Amish faith, but it didn't only come from Amish people, so... there it is.

Still loved the book. Still hope to read the rest. Can't wait to see what Wiseman does later in the series. Who knows, maybe that faith element will grow into Biblical maturity. :)

This book has three narrators--Eva, Jake, and Yvonne. Yvonne is a book buyer that comes to town to buy a book that isn't for sale. Eva and Jake work at the bookstore. The story has a bit of a love triangle going, but it ended the way I wanted it to. I was afraid the author would go a different way. The book Yvonne is looking for is a big part of the story. It impacts each of the characters in different ways.

Many elements to this timeless Amish read that hit close to the heart. One is a book, one is death and life, and the other is love. All of these are interwoven between an Amish bookseller, his assistant, and an Englisher who buys expensive books for collectors.

Yvonne Wilson is a vibrant young woman. She is engaged and she is about to embark on the greatest deal of her life. A book that her buyer is willing to buy for over $100,000.00 The book belongs to Jake Lantz who has been selling books for a long time. The book is one that his grandfather had given to him with a promise. Never to sell it. It is a promise that Jake is bound by. His assistant Eva who happens to be in love with Jake, finds this book as a way to connect to Jake in a more personal way.

The sparks fly with Yvonne and Jake - they are both committed to their own promise. Yvonne with her client and Jake to his grandfather. Yvonne even though she is engaged, finds herself attracted to Jake in a way that leads her to find out more about the book and the promise that he made.

However, when tragedy strikes, all 3 of them develop a strong bond of faith that is centered on the very book that holds the promise.

I enjoyed this book in many ways. However, for me it touched on theology that is very heavy. I appreciated the author's encouragement for readers to seek God in this area. To walk with Him in our questions, suffering and everyday life. I can't wait for the others in the series.

A special thank you to Zondervan Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

I loved this book. I loved the connections between the various characters in the book and some unexpected scenes that happened. Yes, this was a very engaging book and it is hard to put this one down. Have to keep reading to see what's next, because you can't be too certain!

I enjoyed the Christian themes throughout and the character growth. The characters were well-developed and the non-Amish character, Yvonne was an important part of the story. Their exchanges were very believable and the storyline was new and fresh. I would have to say, this book is a winner. Can't wait for the next in the series!

This is the first in a new series by Beth Wiseman, titled Amish Bookstore. I enjoyed this book so much as there were so many things that happen during the book that keeps your undivided attention from the beginning to the end.

Bookstore owner, Jake Lantz, his employee, Eva who is attracted to Jake, and book buyer, Yvonne Wilson are the main characters in this book. Yvonne comes to Montgomery, Indiana to purchase a book for an unbelievable price that Jake owns. He had promised his grandfather that he would never sell the book. Just what is in this book that makes it so powerful and worth so much money? You will have to read this book to find out.

It is a book you will not want to put down until you have finished it to see how the relationships develop and what the power is that this book holds.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one in this series.

The Bookseller’s Promise is an impressive beginning to the Amish Bookstore series. This heart-warming story, centered around a mysterious rare book, drew me in from the beginning and kept me interested to the final page. The two storylines, one featuring book broker Yvonne Wilson and the other featuring Amish bookseller Jake Lantz and his employee Eva Graber, intertwine beautifully. It was fun to reconnect with matchmaking sisters Lizzie and Esther from a previous series. Lizzie’s antics made me laugh out loud! With a compelling cast of characters, an intriguing plot, sweet romance, and a strong faith element, this book is bound to please lovers of Amish fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series by this talented storyteller.

Jake owns and runs a bookstore with the help of his employee, Eva. Both are Amish. Yvonne is “English” and a rare book finder. She has been hired to locate a very rare and old book, one that Jake indeed owns. And though she has offered a ridiculous amount of money for it, he won’t sell. His grandfather had extracted a promise from Jake that he would never sell it. Jake hasn’t read it, either, so he doesn’t understand its importance; he only knows he can’t break a promise. This is the crux of the story. These three main characters work well together, and all are equally important to the story. Each has his and her own storyline, and all are quite interesting. There is a bit of mystery about the book, about its origin and significance. This is a very well crafted and written story, another great offering by a talented author.

Well, I enjoyed the story. It had more surprises than I am used to in this genre. It also had a lot more theology then I expected. I usually find generic belief in God without much specific theology ironed out, with little to no mention of Jesus. Jesus is mentioned in theis book, but I feel like the message is Jesus plus live a good life.

There's a big emphasis on the main character's belief in God and whether or not there's an afterlife... There's mention that reconciliation with God is achieved through Jesus (no mention of why we need to be made right with God). But it's unclear on how. There's also a lot of "live a good life" and a bit of an "all dogs go to heaven" vibe. They briefly mention the existence of hell, but there's no clear indication on who goes there and why, aymore than a very clear directive on who goes to heaven and why. Of course, the only book that can truly settle those sorts of questions is the Bible itself and perhaps that's beyond the scope of an Amish romance novel... but I just feel either 1) the path to salvation presented is is just inherently different from my own belief or 2) the opportunity to present the clear gospel message is missed.

Acts 16:31 says believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. In a nutshell, the gospel is as follows: We were made by God, but rebelled against Him. This is sin. Sin results in death and eternal separation from God. You must believe that Jesus is the prefect Son of God whose death paid the price for your sin. Any who put their trust in Jesus and call on Him for forgiveness are saved from the results of sin. Jesus's death and resurrection make those who call on Him for forgiveness right with God so that they will spend eternity with God, reconciled to Him. Those who reject this truth spend eternity in hell, separated forever from God. Living a "good" life (a life that reflects the teachings of the Bible) is a result of that salvation, not a requirement for (thanks be to God for that!).

A new series from Beth Wiseman and the story involves a bookstore . . . what could be better? How about a little mystery and romance? Well that's in there too.

Jake Lantz inherited the bookstore from his grandfather along with a mysterious old book. Jake's grandfather gave it all to him with the only stipulation being that he not ever sell the book. Jake made the promise and fully intends to keep it.

It just so happens that Yvonne Wilson from Texas is looking for that exact book and tracks it down to Jake's bookstore. On a whim she decides to make the trip to Indiana to try to convince Jake to sell it. That trip will change all of their lives.

Throughout the story I loved the subtle reminder that no matter the circumstances God works everything out for His people. It's often in the bleakest of times that He makes His plan known.

I enjoyed the faith journey of Yvonne and the budding romance of longtime friends Jake and Eva and I look forward to reading more about these delightful people in coming books in the series.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

The Bookseller's Promise is a very heartwarming story written by Beth Wiseman. This story is filled with old and new friendships, loss, forgiveness, and faith. The mystery surrounding an old book brings a stranger to town to try to purchase the book for a client. Not even one hundred fifty thousand dollars can encourage the owner to sell. He had made a promise to his grandfather before he passed not to. What makes this book so valuable is anyone's guess. When the bookstore owner refuses the young English woman she devises a plan to change his mind. While unexpected the English woman made friends with the owner and his co-worker and what happens next will leave you stunned and heartbroken. The characters are absolutely likeable and add a lot of interest to the story. The author has done a fantastic job with this story.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Yvonne travels to Amish country to try to convince a bookseller to sell a book to her for her client. He steadfastly refuses due to a promise he made his grandfather. He doesn't understand why the book was so important to him but he intends to keep his word.

This was not my favorite Wiseman book. I had a couple issues with it. Jake made me a little crazy. He was kind of back and forth. I didn't believe his "affection change" because there didn't seem to be anything before to give a hint of it. It seemed more a response to someone else showing an interest in Eva.

It also was a little weird that part of this book was a reading of the book in question. It kind of makes sense since it was about that book but it affected the flow.

There were some surprises in the book. I wasn't expecting it to deal with loss and grief. Lizzie provided some comic relief. I would be interested to see what happens next for Abraham or John.

Thank you to Zondervan for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Once again, Beth Wiseman has written a novel that speaks to the heart and soul. It is the first in a new series entitled, "Amish Bookstore". Although labeled as Amish Fiction, this book will appeal to all readers who wish to be completely immersed in tale of richly and realistically described characters. These individuals grab you and pull you into their lives , enabling you to truly experience every trial and challenge with which they cope. I felt as though all of these characters became my best friends, sometimes making me giggle and other times shed a tear. Beth manages to bring the world of The Amish together with that of the Englischers in an imaginative yet realistic manner. The plot is full of twists and turns, involving mystery as well as romance. This novel is one not to be missed!! The master storyteller has done it once again! A five star book!

An unrequited romance and a rare book . . .

That phrase is a perfectly fitting description of The Bookseller's Promise. But if you think that description sums up the whole story, I'm here to tell you that it's not even close.

Yvonne Wilson is on a mission to acquire an extremely rare book, and she finds out that an Amish bookstore actually has the book. However, when Yvonne contacts Jake Lantz, the bookstore owner, she is shocked when he informs her that the book is not for sale. Because Yvonne is not one to give up, especially where a large payout is involved, she decides to travel to Indiana so that she can speak directly to Jake and get him to change his mind.

Jake owns the bookstore that had been his grandfather's, and Eva Graber has worked with him ever since she was fifteen years old. While Eva would like Jake to see her as more than just his employee, he seems a tad bit slow in the romance department and doesn't quite get the message. And that is where a story about an unrequited romance and a rare book begins. It's also the beginning of how Yvonne, Jake and Eva's paths cross and merge together, which create a beautiful story.

While I loved Jake and Eva right from the start, I struggled with feeling the same way about Yvonne. However, as I got to know the three of them better, I completely changed my mind about Yvonne. Then when a curve ball was thrown into the story, the three characters took over my heart completely.

The Bookseller's Promise is a true gem of a story. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop. I wanted Jake and Eva to find each other, but I really wanted to know what was in that special book. Author Beth Wiseman flawlessly blended the themes of romance, intrigue, and faith throughout the story, and she did so in a way where the themes perfectly complement each other and do not overshadowed one another. It was a perfect combination as is, but it became even more perfect with some unexpected events that added so much more depth to the story and made me say, "Wow! I did not see that coming!" I highly recommend you read it for yourself and when you do, you'll understand why.

I enjoy Beth Wiseman's books. When I saw this one was coming out, AND it had a bookish theme, I immediately requested it!

The Bookseller's Promise has a slow start and is description-driven (which if you have been reading my reviews for a while, you know I am not fond of). The story follows Eva, Yvonne, and Jake, told in third person from their perspectives.

I enjoyed the premise of the book. I loved the setting and admired Jake for wanting to keep his promise. This is a quick read with an unexpected plot twist in the middle. The end of the story seems to be setting the stage for the second book.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves Amish romances. Fans of Kathleen Fuller, Wanda Brunstetter, and Amy Clipston will enjoy this one.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Yvonne wants to buy a book from an Amish man for her client. The man won't sell so she goes to see him and learns more about herself. She is planning her wedding and tries to get the Amish man to see that he is in love with his Amish worker. There are discussion questions at the end and the first one was do you think most people would keep their promise to their grandfather not to sell the book or would most take the 150,000 offered. A hard choice.

The narrator really should have looked up the pronunciation of just a few basic German words before taking on this project- at least these 2 which were continually used throughout:
Danke- not “donkey”
Ne- not “knee”
“Donkey for the book” 😆

"The Bookseller's Promise" by Beth Wiseman, is a clean novel written with spiritual principles. It is refreshing to read a book without violence or sexual content. The story starts a bit slow, but has a huge shocking plot twist that changes the entire storyline and leaves readers wanting to quickly know more. It is a beautiful novel that focuses on God's unwavering love.

Jake Lantz, owns an extremely valuable book that he inherited from his grandfather. Yvonne Wilson is determined to buy the book from Jake, but he refuses her generous monetary offers. The rare book has sentimental meaning to Jake. It represents a deep connection to his grandfather and his ancestors. Yvonne makes a trip all the way from Texas to Indiana to personally change Jake's mind. Will Jake sell the book? How will the situation be used to glorify God?

"The Bookseller's Promise" will be published April 19th.

Thank you NetGalley and Zondervan Fiction, for the honor of reviewing this touching story.

I don’t know much about the Amish, but the Amish characters in this book seemed a little too English to me. The writing also felt a little juvenile.
