The Kane Saga #2

Return of the Dragons

Rate this book
The truth is revealed, but will history repeat itself? For dragons will rise again. And Elijah is the key.

Having grown up in Rheanydd, all Elijah wanted to focus on was entering the annual Hollom horse race. A year later, he’s one of Princess Sienna’s Elite bodyguards in Adelith, where he learns more about his hazy past every day.

King Roderick’s solution to Eli being revealed as the missing crown heir is to marry Eli to Princess Sienna and combine their two bloodlines. But when a body is found with a blood-splattered message and the queen reveals a secret about Eli’s magic, a wedding is the last thing on everyone’s mind.

Eli starts to doubt the Dragon Elders’ motives when their answers only come in the form of cryptic messages. Yet he can’t help but feel a connection between the dragons and himself. So, he agrees to fulfil their task to get the relics before The Master’s Agents of Cyran.

But the agreement between the dragons and his father is due to end soon, setting the dragons free from their human forms and able to rebuild their race. Unless The Master gains control of them.

Can Eli and the dragons work together to stop The Master from getting the relics, or will he gain control over the dragons to rebuild the world and become a god?

I received a copy of this book from StoryOrigin in exchange for an honest review.

When we last left Elijah, he had survived the attempt on his life, claimed his heritage - sort of - and proposed to Sienna. This book picks back up not long after those events. Unfortunately, Elijah is struggling with the transition from being an elite palace guard to being the crown prince and the fiance of the princess. Not making things any easier is the fact that Ivan is still around. Though he is being kept around as a stand-in to protect Elijah, Ivan seems to have given in to the illusions of grandeur and is trying to actually take Elijah's place - even going so far as to attack and poison Elijah in his own room.

Thankfully, the attack doesn't work, but it does reveal that there are still enemies around. In addition, the Master seems to be stepping up his own plans. When Elijah finally gets the full story about what happened and why the Master is so fixated upon him, it is decided that Elijah will leave the castle to gain possession of two artifacts that were given to the elves by the dragons for protection. Of course, we all know that it wouldn't be a very good story if things went swimmingly, so, of course, there's some trouble on the journey.

Though we learned in the previous book who Elijah really is, there's still a lot of mystery surrounding him and his magical abilities. The author did a wonderful - if not slightly annoying at times - job of slowly revealing more of that mystery, both to Elijah and to the readers, not the least of which was the bombshell as to the Master's true identity and his connections to Elijah's companions.

As with the first book, there was lots of action in this book, though it is handled well and there interspersed with enough "down time" that it doesn't feel harried. In addition, we meet several new characters; some of them we get to know fairly well, while others remain mysterious. I can say that I was glad to finally leave the castle, because I was beginning to hope that Ivan would just die already. I'm also not sure what to think about Lilliana. Yes, she was helpful in the first book, and perhaps in this book, but there still so much unknown about her. I did enjoy learning more about Maegar in this book, but I'm with Elijah with regard to his frustration at not being given information that he should definitely know.

I was a little more frustrated by the ending of this book, as it was definitely more of a cliffhanger than in the first book. However, the scene we got in the epilogue was *chef's kiss* and I absolutely will be reading the next book.

I received a copy of this book from Story Origin in exchange for an honest review.
Overview.

This book is the second part of the Kane Saga. It continues where the first book left off.

Story

Elijah, the prince who was believed to be dead, has returned and is now betrothed to Princess Sienna.
The dragons, hidden in human form, are making themselves known.
But Elijah has to go on a quest and leave his beloved behind. The dragons tell him that two things are needed to defeat the Master. One is a staff and the other a time.
He sets off with his trusty friend, Salah, a grumpy dragon called Maelor and a feisty elf.
Needless to say, all does not go according to plan.
The plot is interesting and gripping. But sadly, it does not resolve the problems but leaves you hanging in the air, waiting for the next book. I don't like series that do this. It's a serial, not a series. Although in all fairness, the author calls it a Saga, not a series.

Characters.

I enjoyed the characters in this book. They are all different, with their own characteristics. Maelor is always grumpy. Salah is always loyal.
They are all well-drawn.

Writing.

Sadly, like the first book, this is riddled with errors. I found a number on every page. Grammar, wrongly used words, typos, syntax. Also, I understand that the author is from Somerset, England, yet at least once she uses the American, 'gotten'. While not wrong in an American book, it struck a harsh chord here.
There were other things not strictly wrong, but that gave me a strange picture. Like 'Eli dropped his eyes to the ground.'
Too many superfluous words, mainly prepositions, too. (He he looked down at the ground. Down is superfluous. He's not likely to look up at it. This is an example only. Not necessarily in the book.)
Punctuation also left a lot to be desired, too. Often there were commas where there should have been a full stop, and missing commas when someone was named. And there were a few places where I had to go back and read a sentence or paragraph more than once to make sense of it
This is such a pity, because the story is good, but because of my experience with the writing in the first two books, I am wondering if I can manage to read the next one.

I received Return of the Dragons (Kane Saga #2) by R.S. Williams through StoryOrigin and DEFINITELY RECOMMEND. After having discovered he is the missing crown heir Eli goes on the hunt for missing relics before the Agents of Cyran can, along with the agreement between the dragons and his father due to end soon, setting the dragons free from their human forms and able to rebuild their race. Unless The Master gains control of them. Can Eli and the dragons work together to stop The Master getting the relics or will he gain control over the dragons and learn how to use his powers? I'm ready for the next book!

I am excited to see what happens next for Elijah and his companions. In book one, we learned some information that led our characters on a chase to find lost artifacts. Now, with the end of book two, the stakes are higher and the questions keep coming. Let's go to book three!

This is the book if you’re looking for a fantasy with assassins, betrayal, compacts, dragons, elves, friends, prophecy, quests, relics, and romance.
Clean enough for teens with plenty of action.

I read all three books within a few days and can’t wait for the next one.

Received as a review from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Return of the Dragon is not only a great leap forward in this already smart fantasy series but it perfectly interweaves Elijah's complex past that's slowly unfolding around with a present that's as difficult. His marriage to Princess Sieanna brings him headlong into those whom sharing a distaste of Eli's new status. The introduction of the Dragon Elders and what they demand of Eli elevates the story to levels of brilliance with its harrowing, poignant struggle. Highly recommended.

Elijah adventure continues after finding out who he really is and what he can do and trying to not get killed by the master gets pretty intense at times. He and his companions have to find the relics and keep them out of the master's hand. They will have overcome lots of trials and obstacles on their journey. Finding out who are friends and who are foes. Having the relics then losing one sets them all on a different course where the adventure continues. Outstanding 2nd book in the series. A real page turner. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

I loved the first book, and was so excited to get my hands on this one! I was absolutely not disappointed. Book two is bigger and better with more magic, more action, more romance and DRAGONS! If you love classic epic fantasy like Lord of the Rings you'll absolutely love this series. I'm waiting impatiently for book three now!
