A SECOND CHANCE, ROCK STAR ROMANCE WITH A PLUS-SIZE HEROINE...
Birdie Wilder and Liam Miller haven’t spoken in ten years—but that’s all about to change.
Tall and chubby sixteen-year-old Birdie Wilder thought she and her best friend Liam Miller were always meant to be more than friends. But after he harshly dashes her dreams of any romantic relationship between them, their friendship ends, and they find themselves at odds.
Ten years later, Birdie is a famous rock star traveling the world and proving that plus-size women can rock with the best of them; size never equals talent, and her adoring fans love her… maybe a little too much. When a stalker begins to threaten her safety, the label hires her a personal bodyguard. A bodyguard who just happens to be the subject of her hit songs, and the face of her teenage rejection, Liam Miller.
Recently recovered from a horrible accident in the line of duty, Liam Miller is Birdie Wilder’s new bodyguard. Practically forced to take the job by his friend and roommate Ben, who also happens to be a friend of Birdie’s, Liam tries to make the best of his new predicament. Though he’s spent the last ten years avoiding Birdie, it’s time to face the music.
Now reunited, the once teenage best friends must overcome their differences and repair everything that’s broken, while dealing with the increasing threat of Birdie’s stalker—which is only complicated further by their growing sexual tension.
Will Birdie and Liam be able to mend their hearts and move forward?
Or will the past be too much to handle?
This is a standalone novel with a HEA. Mentions of fatphobia, body image, kidnapping, and stalkers.
Let me start by saying overall I really enjoyed I Like You Like That, it was fun, steamy, and went by very fast. However, I have to knock it down a full star because of some things.
Let's start with what I did like. 1. The whole book is about a badass plus-size musician who has recently come into some issues involving a stalker. Her label hires a bodyguard for her and she is surprised to find it is her ex-best friend/crush whom she ended things with on very bad terms. 2. I loved the forced proximity and friends to enemies to lovers trope throughout the book that led to some fun times.
What I didn’t like about the book 1. Before the MC and FMC meet/reunite in the book, the MC has an off-page tryst with another woman. That’s already icky, but the fact that after the two MCs reunite and he becomes her bodyguard, said MC gets stressed and says he needs some relief. He then proceeds to briefly think about the OW before switching to the FMC instead. YUCK. It’s a personal preference but I don’t want to read a romance book with an MC who thinks about or gets with anyone other than the FMC. 2. I don’t hate third-act breakups, however, this one was so unnecessary. It was in the last 10% when everything in the plot has come to a boil and finished and then he just says he can’t handle things 🤦♀️. It felt like an afterthought, like a way to extend the book another 25 pages and it made zero sense.
Im sad I didn’t like this as much as I thought i would. That 10/10 book cover made me more excited about it than i shouldve been.
I mean its a popstar x bodyguard trope, one of my favourites. + it being friends to enemies to lovers and it having top tier plus size rep made it sound even better but somehow i was bordeline bored the entire time :/
Its a pretty fast paced book so the boredom wasn’t that constant but the plot just didn’t hit the spot, the reasons why they stopped being friends were ridiculous, specially on his side. The stalker plotline was awful, ive read mafia vampire 5sos fanfics on wattpad with better stalker storylines, specially the twist, like come on? Creativity flew out the window for that part.
Of course there were good things, like the whole music, concerts and tour aspects of the book were fun and I loved how they portrayed birdys characters, we need more cute plus size representation in books, specially one where the whole book doesn’t center around them being bigger or them trying to loose weight and/or developing an ED (it seems to be the most popular trope for plus size female leads these past 5 years 😬)
I forgot to mention but i disliked liam, he was just inexplicably a big wuss, i felt his character was underdeveloped, actually i felt like most characters were. I mean he got his story and past, but most of his actions, words and thoughts just didn’t make sense. Same with wren and ben, they were just…there. I wanted to pull my hair out every-time they were mentioned and I don’t know why.
I see lots of potential with this author, and even though this is a meh read for me i will keep my eyes open for any new releases, maybe the next one will hit the spot, maybe not, who knows?
So, this book was fine, but not great. I really dig the themes of friendship, and I was definitely here for the messy romance between Liam and Birdie, but I really struggled with Birdies inner voice even though as a plus size gal myself, I GET the internal fatphobia and body image issues, but I don’t want to read about it in my romance novels featuring plus size main characters. The stalking plot point I felt was just thrown in there for tension and a reason for Liam and Birdie to make up and didn’t make much sense for the plot in my opinion, but it was great to see Birdie get her man!
KU Raed 340ish Pages Friends to Enemies to Friends to Lovers Childhood Friends Bodyguard x Celebrity Found Family Curvy FMC
Birdie and Liam were best friends as teens but when Birdie confessed her feeling Liam told her he could never like her like that... Blowing up Birdies entire world as she took the words as he could never love a curvy girl... ...for Liam this it was self preservation.Birdie was his best friend, his rock when his home life wasn't good and he never wanted to lose her. He swore never to act on his feelings so as not to lose her yet he did anyway. Now as adults, Birdie is a famous singer with a deranged stalker and with Liam as her bodyguard they are forced to do front their last while also dealing with an I known threat.
It was really cool to read some more of the back list from Kayla Grosse. I discovered her with her Cowboy Romance, so this was definitely down a different track! But there was still a sassy, lovely heroine and a protective, fierce hero.
It was a very solid, bodyguard Romance. I'm not always a big fan of famous people romances but I feel like Birdie was so down to earth for being a star, so there was none of the entitled, bitchy starlit trope we often get.
I really felt the angst from what broke Liam and Birdie's friendship up as teens. The miscommunication was heartbreaking yet understandable for both of their life experiences. Sometimes there is just no way to say what you mean, especially when you are young and overwhelmed. It is also realistic to see that miscommunication to lead to a kind of animosity. I have had it happen in my own life.
Because of meddling friends, and a creepy stalker, Birdie and Liam are forced back into each other's lives. With time on the road for her tour and constant proximity, there is only so long they can go before all their secrets and regrets blow up in their face. They still have a stalker to defeat, but seeing them work through their childhood struggles was very cathartic.
This was of course, very steamy and Kayla Grosse does not disappoint in their bedroom scenes. Can confirm, they are very hot.
I listened to the audio book of this title and Greyson Owen & Angelina Rocca did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. Angelina in particular had this breathy, sexy voice that gave me chills at times. Highly recommend you consume the story that way.
4 stars 3 on the spice scale

*Thank you to Must Love Audio and the author for an ARC of this title.*
let me start by saying i don’t think i enjoyed how the whole best friends-to-strangers-to-lovers thing was set up. having only one flashback narrating how it all went down before the actual narrative, and then one or two scattered in the middle of the book wasn’t nearly enough for me to be connected to their past friendship. and it also didn’t show me why i should care that it’s gone. you couldn’t feel the weight (or *i* couldn’t, at least) of a lost friendship, just weird animosity that wasn’t balanced with romantic chemistry. the reason for their friendship ending was also fairly stupid, or maybe it’s just that i didn’t like her high school crush to have been unrequited. or perhaps it was the way it was executed. whatever; it pissed me off. he didn’t seem to like her at all, which might be because we don’t have a solid friendship base to go from.
and then, the book felt divided between being a romcom and a romance thriller, the result being that it gets lost in the middle, and doesn’t achieve any of the two. the author should’ve committed to one or the other, preferably the romance. the stalker shit felt cheap, shoehorned in and messily done and resolved. we also don’t avoid the third act breakup—but already having a big third act climax (girl, she gets kidnapped), we really didn’t need it.
i wished that stalker plot were gone and the narrative leaned in more into the rockstar life. i also wished the book had dedicated more time narrating their high school friendship so i could feel ANYTHING for these two people
it’s been a while since i wrote a review that’s not 3 words but the cover made me excited and then let me down horrendously
I was so freaking excited for the book and the premise and the tropes were so good but DNFing because of my pet peeve. Not safe enough for me.
I loved the heroine but hero was whole another game. I was ok with him in the beginning then started getting irritated and then active dislike.
After he was appointed as heroine’s bodyguard the same day he decides to go and have a one morning stand with a stranger he meets at the gym. I was SO NOT OK with that move. I couldn’t decide if i should stop there but decided to swallow it like a bitter pill and go ahead because i wanted to give it a chance and that scenes thankfully wasn’t detailed. BUT then while guarding the heroine’s room hero started remembering the morning scene with ‘Bendy Cindy’ and how she rode him and twist of her hips etc🤢. That was the last straw for me.
✧˚ ༘ ⋆。✩°。⋆⸜ 🎧 music, fame, and former best friends? get ready to love i like you like that.
i actually really liked this book! i was kinda scared to not like it because not gonna lie... the first 30-50% of the book i was leaning towards 3/5 stars. i was like "ok. this is kinda okay. im annoyed at this hero constantly." and stuff like that, you know? but that second half tho??? CHEF KISS. i was on the edge of my seat, i was swooning so hard, i was smiling from ear to ear! and it quickly earn one more star. im still going to leave one star off because of the first part which was kinda slow-ish and i was also annoyed that the hero was constantly getting flirted on but not the heroine? every stranger woman on scene was giving him smiles and flirty grins while the heroine WHO WAS A SUPER FAMOUS ROCKSTAR didn't have this. i was like what???? make him jealous NOW.
but you know what? i got over it because when i reached the second half i was like eating this up. every single page! i do want to say to the miscommunication trope haters, you're not gonna like this. the main issue is miscommunication lmao there's this secret the hero has been keeping and thats why their friendship broke apart during their teens. i like that when they reunite, she asks him point blank why he said those things back then and he quickly reveals the secret! so yeah it's clear the grow and they needed that time to do it alone, not with each other. they needed to live their lives and fate would make them find each other again years later. even though they found the love of their lives at fifteen, it was sort of right person, wrong time kind of thing. WHICH I KNOW MANY OF YOU ADORE.
♡ bodyguard trope ♡ yes, indeed. i love that she's the famous one. she's so famous and rich and she has everything. while he's her childhood best friend who let her down and broke her heart years ago. now he has been hired as her new bodyguard because she has a stalker who is threatening her through anon letters and calls, so he has to be there for her constantly even sometimes sleeping on the same room!
♡ steamy af ♡ THIS BOOK IS HOT HOT. if you're thinking on reading this but you want something with steamy moments and you aren't sure if this has it, i'm here to tell you that it does. a lot of them! they have the hots for each other and constantly horny whenever they are near one another lmao. good times, good times.
i will def have an eye out for any future books from kayla grosse. the setting was great, the plot was entertaining, the found family part was GREAT (i love their best friends and the crew around birdie, like the band, her manager, etc). overall, this book was a fun time!
Bodyguard romance with estranged best friends to lovers and a plus size heroine AND she's also a rock star?!!!! I never one clicked so fast
And I love how feral and horny Birdie and Liam are for each other 😌🔥🔥
Content warning: fatphobia (challenged), gun violence, kidnapping and confinement, explicit sex scenes, mentions of panic and anxiety attacks, mention of PTSD, stalking
He closes the distance between our mouths and kisses me silly. The kind of kiss that romance novelists write about. The kind of kiss that little girls dream of when they watch Disney movies."
*4.5 stars*
This was a fun, cute, body positive romance novel! Birdie Wilder is now a world wide famous plus sized rock star, and Liam is her former high school best friend turned bodyguard (through a bit of innocent manipulating by his best friend). The two of them stopped talking after Liam rejected Birdie's advances in high school, and she feels that she has mostly moved on. But with Liam in close proximity and responsible for her safety, old feelings are brought to the surface. I loved how confident Birdie is in herself! This story is full of angst as Birdie and Liam work through what drove them apart in high school, and the current day situation they find themselves in. Such a cute book!
I had things that kind bothered me. I could understand her "hatred" for him, after having her heart broken at 16 and the distance, but the reason he also stopped talking to her and didn't even wanted to her her name was bullshit, just like the reason they "broke up" near the end act. Bullshit on his part. BUT, this book has a great, strong, sexy, fat protagonist, who is proud of her body, proud of herself, and I am greatful that this book exist.
I often struggle with books with fat heroines, because sometimes it's so OBVIOUS that the writer doesn't know what she is writing about. That she never struggle with her weight a single day in her life. But that wasn't the case with this book.
this was an absolute fumble. i was so excited to read a story with not only a bodyguard trope but a plus size mfc. i tried to power through but the writing was tragic. it was a mix of wattpad and penelope douglas. there was no nuance and it did too much telling instead of showing. the dialogue made me want to rip my eyeballs out.
i was confused most of the time bc they were supposed to be 26-28 years old but they were acting like children. i hate when characters don’t act their age. 80% of the time birdie was like “omg THE liam miller is kissing ME right now! i must be dreaming!!” like ok bestie please dial it back.
omg and then he called her a bitch in a rude and condescending way and she was like “wow, you really think so,” *seductively bites lip and puts her hair behind her ear* “no one’s ever called me that to my face” like jaw on floor. there is quite literally no way i would even remotely give a man that called me a bitch for no reason the time of day.
90% of the time liam was like “i am an asshole” like ok… this isn’t a bakery you’re not gonna get a cookie. just because you say you’re an asshole doesn’t absolve you from being an asshole. he was only saying it to avoid the consequences of what he says and does.
you know it’s true when they say the boy has to be more in love with the girl for the relationship to work and it sucks. i hate the way liam was like “i was head over heels for her in a platonic way. sure she is my best friend and makes me happy and i tell her everything and feel so comfortable with her and think she’s gorgeous and smart and love her voice, but i don’t have feelings for her. and it’s not cuz she’s fat.” like really?? it felt like that was the ONLY reason you didn’t like her back. and i know they said it’s cuz his dad but like cmon.
and all of the weird stalker drama is gonna happen and THEN you’re gonna do a third act breakup?? there is a special place in hell for all third act breakups i truly hate them.
truly truly disappointed. i think my superiority complex is growing by the day. i might have to take all these books i read with great plots and poor execution and rewrite them. 2.8

3.5 stars! I Like You Like That got a new audiobook and I had a fun time with this audio ALC! This author always writes plus size rep for her characters, and this one is a rockstar and bodyguard romance!
Birdie and Liam were best friends as teens, she always thought they were destined to be more until he broke her heart and dashed any of those romantic dreams when he found out she was looking for more. Their friendship ended and now it’s 10 years later and she’s a famous rockstar traveling the world! When a stalker comes into her life her team hires her a bodyguard and she gets the surprise of her life when Liam shows up as her new bodyguard!
This one was cute and fun! We get flashbacks of when they were younger as well as present day with them working closely together. They of course have a lot to work through from the miscommunication of their past and that friendship that ended and needs mending. If you like a bodyguard romance, this has all those protective hero vibes, also delivers on some angst, and it was fun seeing her as a rockstar!
I received an audio ALC, I definitely recommend checking it out on audio as well. The audiobook is narrated by Angelina Rocca and Grayson Owens, I loved Angelina’s performance on this one!
CW: mentions of fatphobia, body image, kidnapping, and stalkers
This was an okay read, though I really expected to love this one. While I enjoyed the main character, I felt the writing made the characters lack depth. I wanted more and some more development, but I never got it. With that being said, I enjoyed it enough to finish it, but I won't be shouting it from the rooftops.
I am always on the hunt for books with a plus size main character, even better if it is a romance, and so when I saw this come out I was quick to pick it up. Birdie is a rock star touring the world and she has also managed to pick up a dangerous stalker in her rise to fame. In comes her new body guard Liam, who also happens to be her high school best friend who she confessed her feelings to at 15 and when he denied her they lost their friendship. Ten years and a lot of personal events have happened, can these two work out their issues and learn to work together...and possibly more? This had a handful of things I enjoy like second chance romance, body guard, plus size main character however it also had an Alpha Male and those are not my thing so it was a little hard to read around that. Overall though it was a fun book with good steamy scenes, well developed characters and interesting plot.
“You never know where your life will lead. Open your heart. Open your mind. Be willing to listen and forgive. If you close yourself off forever, you may miss out on something wonderful.”
Can you say heartwarming and beautiful. This book feels like teenage love and obsession. The emotions in the book just climbed off the page.
“You’re my person, Birdie. You’re my best friend, the love of my life, my forever. I want to travel the world with you and protect you from obsessed fans and paparazzi. I want to hold you when you cry and cheer you on. I want to be the first one that hears your new songs and the person you see when you open your eyes every morning. I want to be your everything, Birdie, and I want the world to know it too.”
our mmc’s kind of an asshat who needs to learn to apologize with TEARS and our fmc needs to learn how to not forgive him, SIS on your two feet !!
anyway the pacing was really off, it was just scene after scene and none of it really flowed.
and our little thriller aspect was so predictable that it seemed I was missing a plot twist somewhere. In the end, it was like, really, that’s it? where’s the drama?
Thanks to Kayla, Dreamscape, and NetGalley for providing me with an audio copy of the novel, I Like You Like That.
4.25/5 ⭐️ 1/5 🌶️
We open in the first 2 chapters on present day for our FMC, Birdie, and MMC, Liam. Then we flash back to their teenage selves and how they became friends and why their friendship fell out.
Birdie is now a famous musician. Liam is an ex-cop turned private security (bodyguard). Brodie needs a bodyguard because of a stalker. Their initial interactions are tumultuous at best. Eventually they really talk about what happened. They realized that for 10 years they could’ve stayed friends or become more!
We get doses of the steamy scenes Kayla is known for, although this is one of her more tame novels.
For the audiobook there are veteran narrators Angelina Rocca voicing Birdie and Greyson Owens voicing Liam. I adore Angelina’s voice and think it was the perfect fit for Birdie, given she has this sexy raspiness to her voice. Birdie is described as having a similar voice. Kayla loves her some Greyson Owens, as he narrates a lot of her audiobooks. He does a wonderful job portraying Liam. They both portray the array of emotions well.
three stars! ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ this was a pretty cute read! i am always down to read about plus size babes gettin the love they deserve, and i especially loved the fact that birdie was a rockstar in this novel! also appreciated the fact that her weight wasn’t really a plot point in the book; like she wasn’t trying to be happy with it or lose weight. she was simply confident and comfortable in her own skin and i loooove seeing rep like that!! unfortunately, i didn’t really connect with the characters as much as i had hoped. i was honestly kind of indifferent about them + their story?? like it was cute but just didn’t really hit the mark with me. i also thought the writing was a bit too… juvenile?? that might not be the right word but the writing style just didn’t vibe with me, sadly. the book definitely had it’s moments, though, especially when birdie and liam finally got together! overall, a pretty light and sweet read! <3
This novel follows Birdie Wilder, a 26-year-old plus-size rockstar touring while a stalker trails her travels. Ten years ago, at 16, she fell for her popular best friend, Liam Miller, and finally had the courage to tell him. Heartbroken by his response, she channeled all her energy into her music and distanced herself. Now, in need of a bodyguard to continue touring, what happens when her ex-best friend shows up to take the position?
This book was a fun read, and the audiobook was brilliant. Grayson Owens and Angelina Rocca really brought these characters to life, and their voices fit so well. I loved Liam and Birdie together. In the past, Birdie struggled with teenage love, rejection, and maintaining distance, but now her first love is standing right in front of her again after ten years. I love how Birdie, a plus-size character often judged in the public eye, seems more confident now than she was as a teenager. When Liam called her “Birdie Girl,” I was melting. His protective and caring side, even after all this time, was beautiful. What a fun story. I’m excited to explore more of Kayla’s work in the future!

It was cute! Very emotional though, being a big girl myself and taking that leap and being shut down, oh it had me in all the feels! But it was a good story, had a very emotional and scary twist, and even though one decision was heartbreaking I saw where it was coming from. Wrong but I get it. Very spicy as well, yes y’all big gurls need love too!
Oh and if you can get audible on it- yes! Birdie’s voice OMG if she has any other or decides to sing that voice is just super sexy…..
A second chance, rock star romance with a plus size heroine. This was such a sweet story. Birdie and Liam were heartfelt, and I loved both characters. I devoured it because I was so invested in their story. The spice was so good and well done. I absolutely loved the body positivity! The narrators were amazing and really did an excellent job! Highly recommend!
