Forced by the contents of her Grammy’s will, Niamh Emer moves to the last place on earth taking the family horse racing business with her. Alone in Last Chance, Nebraska during a drought was not how she planned to spend the rest of her life.
Sent by the university, Professor Rory Cormac moves to Western Nebraska to start an extension farm. He is confident the research on sugar beets and other crops will help to revitalize agriculture in the region.
When he discovers his new neighbor races horses, his life speeds up in a way he never imagined.

I really enjoyed the story of Niamh and Rory. Loved the characters strong, independent women and Handsome Gentlemen. And not forget the grumpy, mean neighbor. His story is something else to tell! A real page turner, had me reading all day to get to the ending! Just disappointed that it didn’t clear up the grumpy neighbor, Corky’s story!
Really? Her Grammy wanted her to sell the home she lived in and move to the other, desolate side of the state, away from everything and everyone she knew. She didn't have a choice. If she didn't move the family race horse breeding business, she'd lose it all. Then she met a man, Rory. She could not have dreamed of a better friend, companion and love of her life. Niamh and Rory will grow their farms together, but when all seems to be going so well, along comes a grumpy guy who will try his best to defame them both. Will it be too much for them? Will the love they share be strong enough?
Rory is a professor who ends up going to Last Chance Nebraska to start a research farm. He's trying to find out if sugar beets can be grown there even with the ongoing drought. Eventually, he meets his neighbor, Niamh and the two become very close friends and they help each other out on their farms . Unfortunately, their neighbor, Corky, is a cranky person who doesn't like them and tries to cause problems. This is a very well written and interesting story that I loved reading.
I really appreciate the fast movement in this story, simple and good reading with great information on location and farming in times past! Focusing on Raising horses and agriculture improvements made it blend well with the times!
R. L. Ashly has created a heroine who in addition to being pretty is smart, adventurous (not always willingly), fun and brave. And who wouldn’t love a man who’d drive a chariot. It was good to visit Last Chance again. I really enjoyed this story.
