This is a good book, although trying to describe 120 years of English/French conflict and making sense of it (if there was any!) in less than 200pp has got to be a real literary challenge. The sections on aspect of medieval warfare (weapons, armour, food, etc.) are very useful, but for the rest, detail seems to be sacrificed for scope. But then the book is no doubt only intended as a brief history in order to make it digestible. The huge challenges of waging war in those days comes through loud and clear, and the reader is left asking 'what did it really achieve'? The incredible waste of lives, suffering of the innocent, and the enormous financial cost to both countries are just astounding.
