Rate this book
Companion to the National Geographic television series , this book reveals the remarkable intelligence, family loyalty, unique personalities, and fascinating behaviors of elephants.

As big as a bus, weighing up to 11 tons, elephants have fascinated us for centuries, but only recently have scientists been able to observe their innermost workings as individuals, families, and herds. This enlightening book—companion to the highly anticipated televisions series from National Geographic—takes us to the few places in the world where elephants roam. Filled with glorious photography and groundbreaking narratives of current science, these pages capture the life and behavior of these iconic creatures as never before seen.

We also meet the researchers and conservationists dedicating their time and risking their lives to understand and protect the world's two species, African and Asian, as they share new insights into elephant culture.

Combining authoritative, cutting-edge knowledge with world-class photography, Secrets of the Elephants reveals behavior never before witnessed—and sounds a clarion call to honor and protect these magnificent animals.

For animal lovers, and especially for those wanting to extend the fascination of the Nat Geo Channel's companion series and enter even more deeply into the lives of these charismatic creatures, Secrets of the Elephants will thrill, inform, and delight.

In short, woodlands with forest elephants are actually better at fighting climate change. Protecting just one species--these extraordinary elephants--could therefore have the side effect of saving thousands of others.

I love elephants so much. They're just the coolest animal there is.

What’s your favorite animal?🐘
I’ve always been fascinated by elephants and was so excited to receive Secret of the Elephants!!
I loved this book and was thrilled to find out this was based on the TV series by National Geographic! I found the series Secret of the Elephants on Disney+ but I think it’s on Hulu and YouTube TV too.
If you’ve ever been interested in elephants you will absolutely love this book and television series. The intelligence of this magnificent animal is mind blowing, and they are more like humans than we realize. I highly recommend this book and series!
Thank you @tlcbooktours and @natgeo for this beautiful book!

Weighting up to 11 tons, Elephant have fascinated humans. Recently, however, scientists have studied them further. In this book, they discuss their findings, including how individuals, herds, and families behave. Filled with beautiful imagery and unique, informative text, readers will be enchanted and drawn into the world of elephants. The layout is well-done and easy to take in. A must-read for readers interested in elephants, non-fiction, and National Geographic books. A must-have for library collections.

Because I love elephants so much and feel sometimes part of their lovely family secrets, this book did now show me anything particularly new but put what I did know into beautiful words. My hope is that the more people learn about these amazing creatures, might just save them from extinction and the sheer torture and terror they endure in captivity for circuses, logging, temple worship parades and festivals. They are so wonderful in their living, mourning of family members intelligence and empathy. Nat Geo has a TV series for those who either read it or prefer to just watch. Enjoy

I only read the introduction and the many photo captions but I still learned a lot. The book is primarily photographs and all of them are large, beautiful, and impressive.

There are 4 chapters, each of which describe the particular kind of elephant featured within along with interesting facts about their location, habitat, estimated population, and their characteristics. The chapters focus on Savanna, Forest, Desert, and Asian elephants.

I hope National Geographic never stops doing this "Secrets of..." series of documentaries with book companions. "Secrets of the Elephants" is an excellent book. It provides an overview of each elephant species and a collection of absolutely stunning photos. I liked the pages featuring people doing work with elephant conservation as well. I learned a lot, but it's a short, quick read. I'm so excited to jump into the documentary now and then get into the whales after that!

Beautiful photographs and enlightening prose reveal much about this remarkable, highly intelligent, sentient species. Humans should be ashamed of ourselves for the genocide we inflicted upon them these past 50 years. We owe it to the elephants, and to future generations, to do all we can to protect them. Please consider a gift to the Elephant Crisis Fund, sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Network.

I bought this companion book after watching the Nat Geo TV special.

It is well-written and researched by Claudia Geib. The photographs are beautiful and what you would expect from National Geographic.
