Not what I usually read but it was a fun book, excited to read the finished draft and criticise it. Definitely recommend to read it if you like reading about sapphic teenage witches and cats. And if you don’t like reading about sapphic teenage witches then I’m sorry for your bad taste in book….. and if you don’t like cats then you are not worthy of love and oxygen.

A 13 year old lesbian discovers she’s a witch, slowly falls in love with her best friend whose dad is totally an accountant (promise!), and whose coven randomly blasts into her house consisting of a short witch with anger-management issues and her sweet, nature witch girlfriend; this wasn’t exactly what Amelia thought would happen when her grandmother died.

(There might also be a magic library, foul-mouthed cat, and a gargoyle named Jerry).

This was really sweet! The characters were loveable, the conflict was tense and I’m intrigued to see where the rest of the series goes.

(This is not a romance, strong focus on sense of self, magic and friendship!)

special thanks to the pepperback press and augusta owens for the arc in exchange of an honest review!

everything changes when amelia's grand mother dies : the girl is now a witch in the hummingbird coven! with sam (her "bestfriend"🙄) and her new cat percy, amelia will discover a wonderful magical world... which can also be dangerous. 🪄⏱🔮⛓🐦

a very good debut novel, i wish younger me could have read this story!! it is so rare in fantasy to have young teenagers who act like their age (when most of the time it is about 15yo girls who save the world with magic powers). here, it is realistic : amelia wasn't very confident about her powers or being a witch in general, and the romance was just about attraction (no $mut or anything physical which was perfect, since i don't think a lot of thirteen years old girls experience more anyway!)

so while the writing wasn't excellent, it was a cute & nice fantasy that i enjoyed reading. i cared deeply for sam even though i wish her family issues weren't so relatable lol.

"sam was used to constantly feeling like she was always in someone’s way, a burden or hindrance".

"amelia frowned. “you have your dad. you love him, don’t you?” sam paused, staring up at the ceiling and thinking. “only because he’s my dad. because I’m supposed to.”"

(this is my favorite kind of character🤐)

now, i just don't think this story was for me- maybe a few years ago, i would have loved it. but now... it felt a little too childish, and that's the reason why i can only give it three stars.
also, i expected more development from the worldbuilding (but that's not necessairely a bad point since it means that it has a lot of potential for the next book with all the different types of magical creatures) and i really want to know what happens to all these cute and very stubborn little witches!

Also alles im grünen Bereich! 😃

Thank you to BookSirens, and the publishers for providing me an e-arc. All opinions are my own.

This was such a solid read! It had witches, secret societies, the chosen one trope, sapphic romance brewing and entertainment throughout.

I found my interest being peaked pretty much all the way through the story.

I loved learning about Amelia's power and would have appreciated learning more about the mechanisms of that. I also really wanted more from Percy because I feel like there was always so much more hinted to about him but never properly explored.

My main problems with this was the over use of descriptors. For example, Harry constantly being described as "the blonde". It just felt like there wasn't anything else that was interesting enough to be used to describe their characteristics, or as if the author thought we'd need constant reminding, which wasn't the case as the cast was small and easy to remember. It was ever so slightly off putting. Enough for it to effect my reading, in any case.
I knew this wasn't going to be a romance - that's not what I was going into this for - but I was expecting more sapphicness than we got, so I did find that a little disappointing.
I also found that the relationship between the teens and the adults didn't feel very believable... especially with Amelia, and her mum, Stephanie. It just felt like an odd dynamic, one that I can't quite put my finger on but just felt off.

Nevertheless this was a much faster read than I expected it to be, but I think that had to do with how fun and entertaining it was, so much so that I found myself whizzing through it. I did also use the awkward text-to-speech for a few hours worth whilst I was at work on a Saturday morning, which helped, and didn't affect my enjoyment negatively at all.

All in all, a good read.

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<

the premise of this book was so cute, teenage lesbian witches. however, as the story progressed it felt a little flat.
although this is the first in what i think may be a series, the first book was barely an intorduction to the world of the supernatural, specifically witchcraft. i wished that we spent more time with amelia on building some skills that she learned in her own time, instead, the whole book was spent with her being frustrated with her lack of knowledge.

ok anyways, it was an alright read so I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it if you really wanted too. it was a quick read with some witchy vibes and a cat that was just kinda there.

Thanks to the Pepperback Press and Augusta Owens for sending me an arc!

3.5 stars :)

Ok, so I actually really enjoyed this book and I think 13 year old me would have loved it. While I had some trouble getting into the writing style and the development of the plot was a bit slow in my opinion, it was easy to follow and got more exciting later on.

What I absolutely loved was the portrayal and description of the girls because their behaviour and their feelings were described in a way that felt realistic and appropriate for 13 year olds. I especially liked Sam and how you could see that she tried to remain strong, eventhough she was scared. Harriet is a type of character that I absolutely adore and I enjoyed her development, mostly that you can see that it's still Harriet but like a better version of herself. The last chapters were my personal favourites and the ending was somewhat sad, yet very sweet.

I wish that we had gotten to know more about the magic there and while it's great and more realistic that you could feel Amelia's confusion because she has absolutely no experience, it would have been interesting to know a tiny bit more about the overall magic system. I'm also kind of sad that we didn't get to read that much about Sofia towards the end.

Concluding, The Hummingbird Coven was an easy read and it was really nice to just lay down with it with a cozy blanket and a cup of tea after a long day. <3

I was very happy to find a ya fantasy book that didn’t have the biggest focus on the romance. It was like reading a sapphic version of Harry Potter but kinda better. And also I felt like it was a lot like the series teen wolf but also that i liked this one better since the main characters were younger and that a lot of the focus was on exploring who you are and who you can be. It’s actually very good written and I really enjoyed this book, so overall for me it was a five star read and I’m really happy that I found this book.

This book was a delight to read. It has so many things to love. The beginnings of an interesting magic world, friendship, found family. Can't wait to continue this journey and see what these characters get up to.

I really wanted to love this book. The summary was really appealing and the themes suggested on Book Siren piqued my interest. Unfortunately one of the themes was nowhere to be seen (lesbian fiction when there’s no sign of any lesbians except a couple of brief moments that are so subtle most would miss them?!) I get the impression from the style of writing and the storyline that the author hasn’t yet honed their craft. There were tells that I have found quite common in fanfiction writing such as using “the blonde” instead of a characters name. This did settle down later on in the story.

The storyline itself had some interesting moments but I struggled to find it captivating at times.

The characters were interesting and I feel we learnt a bit about each person, though the dialogue didn’t quite feel like it was unique enough to each person and didn’t quite fit the character of a 13 year old. This was especially true of Amelia, though her mother also felt a little bit flat too.

I feel the story did improve in the second half as the characters became more well rounded and interesting, and the storyline became a little more exciting. I especially liked Sam and Sofia. The world building was really good and I definitely felt a sense of place from start to finish.

The Hummingbird Coven

I received an ARC from BookSirens to review!

I loved this book and was sucked in by the first chapter! The characters are all so life-like in their personalities and relationships with each other, I really felt for them. I also loved learning more about the magic in this world and found the premise pretty unique! Overall, the only thing I found a little off was that the younger girls read a lot older than they're labeled.

I absolutely recommend this book!

The Hummingbird Coven is a Y/A fantasy book. It has witches, a cat witch its own personality and so much more. It's not something I normally read but it is written amazingly and kept me glued to every page.(Most of) the characters were individualy loveable and great. I would absolutely recommend reading it if you liked the Harry Potter books.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! I liked the characters and the story, and the writing style was enjoyable and appropriate for the intended age group. I liked the way the author introduced the idea of magic and how the magic system worked in this book, and I thought the pacing was pretty good.

Though I liked the characters I think they could’ve been developed a bit more. At times the characters lacked depth which meant that some scenes weren’t as emotional or impactful as they would’ve been if the reader cared about the characters a bit more. Also, though the pacing was quite good, there were parts where it felt like the plot dragged a bit. I thought the plot could’ve been distributed a bit more evenly as some scenes, especially the more dramatic scenes towards the end of the book, felt a bit rushed at times. There were also a few spelling errors in the eARC version of the book I read.

I liked the book and felt it was very appropriate for the intended age group. I thought it could’ve been improved by adding more depth to some of the characters and adjusting the pacing slightly to give more time to important scenes, especially the climactic chapters towards the end of the book.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I definitely enjoyed this book as much as the 12-year-old in me did. This book felt like something that I wanted so badly to read when I was a closeted pre-teen lesbian.

I discovered this from the author's Tiktok and immediately tried to squeeze the book in between my schedule.

I'm leaving a 3-star review, however, because I think the book could be better. Sometimes, it felt a bit sluggish and the plot just dragged on. And I was kind of given the idea that it would be an enemies to lovers type situation (best friends to enemies to lovers, iykwim), but it was not at all the case. I actually appreciate that it did not focus on the romance aspect, but I was hoping to see more of that. There was also a lack of explanation about Amelia's magic and magic in general, but given the urgency of the main plot, I understand why it was that way.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book a lot. Hopefully, if there is a sequel, we get to see more about Amelia and Sam and a more in-depth explanation on magic.

This book made me like fantasy again.

The magic system in this book is awesome! I've never read anything similar. The way witches get their powers and how the covens work was so interesting. I feel like there is also a way for the magic system to grow.

The best thing about this book are the characters and their dynamics. The bond between Amelia and Sam is so strong; they are each others forever people. I can't wait to see their relationship develope!

As much as I loved the characters, I have to say that the pacing of the book wasn't the best. The beginning of the book was quite slow and the enging felt a little rushed. I know that's the case for a lot of fantasy books because they have to introduce the magic system and build the world.

I would say that if you like strong willed characters and a beautiful friendships you should read this book. It was fun, adventurous and interesting.

/ This was my first arc! Thank you Pepperback Press for sending this my way!

**I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.**

I really really liked this book. I love fantasy books and this one did not disappoint.

To be honest, I first I thought the book wasn't going to be my cup of tea and that it was going to be boring, but I'm very happy to say that this was not the case.

The book is dynamic in a way that allows you to be part of the story, it felt almost like watching a movie. I loved it.

I also love, LOVE, the romance subplot between the protagonist and her bestfriend because I'm a sucker for queer romance, and even more for queer romance in a book where that's not the main focus.

I think 13 year old me would have been obsessed with this book, and I think I could see parts of myself in Amelia.

I would definitely recommend you to read this is fantasy, friendship, some bits of romance, adventure, and self-discovery are your type of book!!

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
An FF middle school book that no librarian could possibly object to. A cozy (for the most part) about a 13y.o. new witch and her best friend with a Sapphic subtext and an interesting story.
I wish I had this book to read to my daughter when we used to read books together it would have been perfect in many ways.
The book is aimed at the middle school audience but has enough to keep adult readers interested I for one am looking forward to #2.
A good book written in an interesting style that really deserves a place in middle school libraries and reading lists. Expect good things from this author in the future

Caught site of this author on Instagram and decided to check her out. This book follows a 13 year old girl who suddenly discovers she belongs to a long line of witches when two other girls, part of her coven, materialize in her hometown. She refuses to accompany them without her non-magical best friend which they insist is impossible. But when it turns out her friend's family may be part of this world and hunting for the young witches, the show-down is on. As with most first installments in a series, this one focuses on world and relationship building, leaving the plot seem a little rushed at times. But the characters are engaging and the premise is intriguing. I will certainly be checking out more of Augusta Owens's work and recommending it for those who love coming-of-age fantasies.

When her grandmother dies, 13 year old Amelia inherits her cat and a wooden chest filled with magical items. As Amelia and her best friend Samantha (Sam) try to make sense of this, two young witches appear informing Amelia that she is the third member of their coven and she must return with them to Spain for training. But Amelia won't leave without Sam.

While the description of this ARC was Sapphic YA, it reads more like a Middle Grade best friends (with a hint of something more possible in the future) book. It's a decent effort, with some copyediting needs. Not sure if other 13 year olds would like the book, but it just feels a bit young for YA.

When I first read the description for this book, I was excited because the premise seemed intriguing. But once I started reading it, I realized that the book was a little too YA for me. But, don’t get me wrong, this was a good book, there were a couple spelling errors, but it didn’t take away from the whole story. This story was pretty fast paced and has a good ending. I would recommend this to someone who likes the found family trope as well as witches. The world this author built was great, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next whether it’s in this world, or another one. Sometimes all you really need is a bunch of little sapphic witches getting into trouble.

Going in I didn't know that this book was meant for a younger audience, I still enjoyed the book well enough. The characters are compelling and relatable and the plot is interesting. I ended up falling a little bit in love with Amelia and her coven, especially Harriet, who seems to be the most complex character in the story and i hope we get to learn more about her in the sequel.
This book is perfect for fans of Mark Stay.

This was such a fun read, and I loved everything about it. The vibes? Perfect, so witchy and just UGH. The characters are all amazing, and I loved every single one of them. The TENSION in between Sam and Amelia is *chefs kiss*. I flew by it in only a few hours, and though (to me) the first two chapters didn’t seem that promising, with writing that resembled fan fiction, it improved quickly until by the fourth chapter I was in love. Basically, a quick-paced read with immaculate vibes and cute teenage lesbians who’s love for each other is obvious to anyone but them, GO BUY IT.

The story started off a bit slow and didn’t immediately catch my interest, but it did pick up as it went along. I really liked that each character felt distinct and had their own personality—that definitely stood out to me. There were a few spelling mistakes here and there, which threw me off a bit while reading. Overall, the plot stayed very focused on one main storyline, which made it feel a little predictable at times, but considering the author started writing this at 13, I think that’s really impressive.
