Something dangerous is lurking in room 119 of a Barcelona hotel. Something vicious. Something evil. Something that wants revenge.
Arriving in the city for a short break, Penny and Steve are looking forward to a week of sun, sea and sand. Those plans are ruined, however, when Steve thinks he recognizes a woman at the hotel bar. Ten years ago, he dated a girl named Annabelle, but the relationship ended badly. The woman at the bar looks a little like Annabelle, not enough for him to be certain that it's her, but enough for him to worry.
Soon, Steve finds himself drawn into a nightmare. He's starting to see the strange woman everywhere, and now he's worried that he's being followed. Has Annabelle returned to his life? If so, has she turned up in Barcelona by accident or by design? And how is her apparent appearance connected to the strange noises and flickering lights that can be heard every night, coming from room 119?
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Love can become an overriding obsession, it can also morph into hatred. If it does, stop, think, and carefully reflect on what is important in your life. A spurned lover attempts to win back her man and will use all means at her disposal, even "murder". Unfortunately, the spurned lover is dead but that doesn't stop her. This was a really spooky supernatural thriller and one I can recommend most highly.
Steve and Penny are a British couple who arrive in Barcelona for a short holiday ahead of their wedding. Hoping for some cultural experiences, good food and sunshine they settle in to their hotel, in room 120. However, on the first night Steve notices a woman at the bar who reminds him very much of his ex-girlfriend Annabelle. He can't be sure though and when he discovers that the mystery woman is in room 119 his curiosity turns to obsession and this threatens the peace of the holiday. After reading The Purchase I decided to go all in on this author and invested in several more of her works. After reading this one I am now very worried that I may have made a mistake. The basic concept here is a good one. We have a ghost story which is centred on the ex-girlfriend from hell (literally) who has found a post-mortem method to cause misery to Steve. This is a sound premise, but unfortunately Steve and Penny are deeply unlikeable, poorly drawn characters. The story was too long and there wasn't really any sense of suspense.. The ending to the main story was unsatisfactory, but the epilogue quite nice and more along the lines of what I was hoping for.
A Barcelona hotel, something evil and vicious lurking in room 119.
Penny and Steve visit Barcelona for a few days looking to relax before they get married. But the plans to relax and take in the sights are ruined when Steve’s past comes back to haunt him. 10 years ago Steve left Annabelle and she just couldn’t let the past stay in the past. A story of toxic love and realisation, but that realisation may have come just a little too late.
The concept of this book is excellent, I love the different point of views within the book and getting to see how each character truly saw the events that transpired through their own eyes, all very different takes on the same story. Not your basic ghost story, Amy provides just that little bit more. It was a very good book and I was excited to see how it turned out in the end.
Only side note would be the editor missed a few spelling mistakes and that could have been avoided but it doesn’t take away from the great story that Amy created.
A story of a mad, vindictive woman who turns into a mad, vindictive ghost, which then haunts a hotel and possesses some of its inhabitants. I didn't think it was hugely scary, but it was definitely an entertaining combination of haunting and mystery. The characters were flawed to the point of being pretty annoying, which is perhaps why the book was less scary than it would have been if we had characters to relate to. But the dark atmosphere and some bloody bits kept the story going nicely enough. 3.5 stars.
A wonderfully written novel by a truly inspiring author. A Haunting story of love, desire, possession and murder brilliantly described and in my opinion makes the book well & truly thought provoking. I am in awe at Amy Cross's ability at creating these interesting characters, ideas & plots which along with her descriptive power makes the novel worthy of its induction into the category marked 'well worth the read'
Amy Cross I enjoy all you stories. You are constantly good and always leave
Me with plenty to think about. I did happen to notice several errors in spellings, double words and such
I have noticed this in all your books, and I always smile because that showed me it was your story. Say hello to mercy Willow and her other two personality for me,thank you for sharing your books and stories and incredible gift with us Sincerely, christinedunne and Serena bunne
There are quite a few typos that I could ignore, but some of them bothered me, especially when it was 'his/her' or 'he/she' typos. However, I will read more from this author, and I hope that other books are edited at least. The author clearly has a really good imagination, and the story was interesting. It should have been at least 150 pages shorter, as the last part was a bit exhausting to read.
Great story line, well done. Is it possible. Who knows, I have seen things that I have seen . but my dog TOBY didn't seem to notice any thing , that is a TRUE statement, dutch
I love Amy Cross books. This is one of the best I've read so far. I really enjoyed the way the book is split into 3 parts of the three main characters. One from his perspective, one from hers and one from the ghost. Very very good read.
A lovely story with solid atmosphere and a good creep factor. I love the author's work. Always reliable on delivering well crafted characters and rounded off plotlines.
I like Amy Cross for passing the time. I've found in her books an occasional gem. This one isn't, but it is not terrible. It is ok for a couple of nice evenings.
The characters seem a bit stereotypical ("stop pranking me", when it is clearly not a prank). There are a few plot holes...
