Such a delightful concept, helping picture book readers to learn the answer to that question. And Lloyd Moss's writing is musical too. I love the creativity in how the type is set, such as the curving shapes for:
Music plays when people marry, music when your birthday's here. Just before it's January, on the last day of the year.
So many of the composers cited in the book are favorites of mine, too. (Let's hear it for "The Pearlfishers" by Bizet! Not just "Carmen.")
Hard to read this book without bursting into song and dance. But then why NOT play and sing and frolic along with this genial intro to music everywhere???
I don't know what it is about author Lloyd Moss' writing, but my daughter adores these books. I enjoy the lyrical cadence of reading them aloud, and the fact that they expose my daughter to music (especially music she either won't ever hear in our house, or would hear rarely), even without actual music. Each time I read Moss' books, I like them more and more.
I think this book would be a great discussion tool with children when talking about music! The book's rhyme rolls right along, and the illustrations are really fun. A concept book, talking about all kinds of music and how it can make you feel. I thought this one was really fun.
Haiku Review: Music is the place where fun beats and rhythms meet; will you join me there?
Nicely written in verse and has a lot of different aspects of music covered. Maybe too many for a 4 yr old... I'm going to check out Our Marching Band next since that's more of my musical background, but this is like an introduction to Music Appreciation for preschoolers.
Illustrations made with simple shapes enhance the rhyming text about all the things music means to people. "Music is a magic potion. Happy music makes me smile. Music's like a mighty ocean, full of motion all the while." Suitable for preschool and up.
