4.5⭐️ w t a f? Omg, so we know not everybody is going to survive this now and I have a feeling I am going to cry like a baby with the final volume. Ugh. I’m not ready 😭
Everyone will slowly die. This actually has a great farewell to one character and some excellent fight scenes. Next volume is the final and I assume this is going to be depressing.
Thank you, Yuji Kaku, for sucker-punching me in the gut, kicking me while I was down, and pouring salt and lemon juice into my wounds. It's fine, it's totally fine, my heart isn't destroyed or anything, I'm good. Just gonna go crawl in the fetal position and sob uncontrollably...
Great volume overall. Made me a bit emotional. Don't care about the newer characters very much, but the original cast is wonderful. The Aza brothers stuff was my favorite section, and I also enjoyed a lot of the stuff with Gabimaru and his wife, and the stuff with Gantetsusai (his character development is so great). Excited to finish the manga so I can look up stuff about the series without worrying about spoilers 😜 I foresee the fandom blowing up once the anime comes out.
My mental link from the story is severed due to a long wait for this volume. That's why I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have if I had read it consistently.
We have now only one Volume left... This Volume broke me! I can't believe what I read! The way Jikka fights is mesmerized and I knew he was strong, but damn! He could predict every single way he could die if he missed a step and fought only in sync.
Shija was a mentally unstable character who loved Gabimaru and wanted to kill him at the same time. They burned themselves in the face to look like Yui when they learnt that Gabimaru married her, they were obsessed with Gabimaru throughout their life, believed Gabimaru was above all and even killed others that were against Gabimaru. Their fighting style, their character design and their personality reminded me of a snake. They were great in battle and they knew more nimpo techniques than Gabimaru. Their death was something I expected would happen, but I felt sad seeing Shija finally (sort of) confessing to Gabimaru. At least they died by the hand they wanted to.
Chobei died sacrificing himself in order to save the others and his dearest little brother and begged his parents for forgiveness but he doesn't have regrets because he knew he was a good big brother! Oh, his death hurted so much!
Also, that thing Yuzuriha learnt: that only two Yang and one Yin will survive, which means only two males and one female will survive...
Also finding out that the Grandmaster was dead for 700 YEARS and no one realized and that Rien was his wife was absolutely mind blowing!

Gabimura refuses to stop fighting to return to his life and a chance at normalcy
Ads sacrifices himself to stop the arborification of the island and defeat Zhu Jin who was a giant flower monster because that’s what big brothers do- the flashback to him as a little boy, smiling, knowing his job in life was to be a good big brother to Toma was so sweet.
They finally get on to a boat that hasn’t be destroyed by the flower monsters (we find out dragon blade cut a ship in half to get his nickname) and Gabimura confirms this is their final stand.
Got the last book here as I sit by the fire - left fuckin go
Bodies are dropping as we get close to the end! The death of love, foresight leads to a giants demise, we finally learn who's really behind all this, Shugen continues to show his undying spirit, sacrifices are made, and we get a ominous prediction. Onto the finale!
the plot and pacing is incredible, the goodbyes ache like nothing else, and the buildup to the ending in this penultimate volume was cleanly done. i’m ready for the finale!
Rien jumped up to a top tier villain. I'm so hyped for the last volume. I've been reading one of these every night, but I don't think I can wait for tomorrow. I'll be back in like 40 minutes with my Vol 13 review. 😂
I only want to talk about Chobe. I k ew it was going to happen and it happened so beautifully. I wish he was still the guy who only cared about himself and his brother because then he would still be alive. But no. He had to go do the heroic thing and miraculously take down the flower in its final push. This was my favourite chapter because it was the Aza have been my favourite part of this story since they came together. Chobe, you were a great brother. The entire time he always put his brother first. He was my favourite character but for all his great character and personality, what he was first and foremost, was a big brother. He lived it till the end. The flashback was glorious and the imagery of him falling into his parents arms? I could just hear the sweet-sad music they’re gonna play in the anime.
I am very critical when I feel that a story has been betrayed just to bring someone back or to have someone win a fight when it seemed like they wouldn’t, but sometimes it gets to the point where I’m willing to accept any old nonsense to bring someone back. Toma isn’t on the boat, he’s on the magic island still, surely there is something there. They’ve talked about the Tao and soul, could there be resurrection for Chobe who survived so many times and joined with the flowers? Please let there be. We got Yuzuriha back so let us get Chobe back.
The rest of the story was fighting to get on a boat. Shugen fought Rein offscreen and lost. Rien the grandmasters wife all along and turned back to a woman just so we could see her breasts in the final fight- I just role my eyes at the inexplicable nudity now. Shugen drank the elixir offscreen and didn’t fight Gentatsusai. Mei turned into a butterfly to clean up the oceans. Is she dead? Her hugging Sagiri and Gabimaru was adorable. Shija and Gabimaru’s fight ended with her declaration of undying love. She was obsessed with fighting him and just being near him. Why was that scene of her painting the scar on her face almost sweet? You were crazy Shija. Crazy till the end. But I loved you for that.
Gentatsusai has left the fight with Shugen to Gabimaru. Shugen can change his Tao form and that’s very damn strong and probably won’t be explained. Unless the explanation is that his intense observation of the people he loves and his imitation of the allows him to manipulate Tao to such an extent that his Tao changes. In such a way that Shija was so obsessed with Gabimaru that she knew what he was thinking. There’s Shugen and Rein left. Are they both the final boss? Is Shugen going to change? Can they forgive him? Is it really 1 woman 2 men? Please let Nurugai and Shion live. Shion has done so much for this team, he deserves it. I’m not a fan of the whole, oh just you wait till the MC shows up, that’s who the real fight is for. I know Gentatsusai has grown old and tiered of senseless violence and monster fighting, but this is a fight for survival and he would at least have tried to fight too. They all should. Let’s not leave it to one person even if they are the MC because this is an ensemble performance.
I’m so conflicted about Shugen still. I loved what Gentatsusai said about the ridiculousness of the samurai because he was right. Shugen follows orders that led him to kill Fuchi. Fuchi who he had such a beautiful relationship with. Fuchi was the best. But then Shugen is someone who loves very strongly. His ties to his strange clan are everything. He is doing all this to protect that. It’s very misguided and has led to devistation. Don’t know how to feel still.
I read this on Viz Media’s site and so I saw the second popularity poll. I’m so glad Tenza is still in top 10 despite dying so long ago. He saved Shugen this chapter. My boy is still a great hero even in death.

This volume was perfect, so much happened and all of it was flawless. Asaemon Jikka is absolute badass in this volume, and while it was played for laughs previously, I think he might be one of the strongest fighters on the island. The character arc of Aza Chobe comes to a close, and I was so satisfied with the sacrifice, he made to help his fellow convicts and Asaemon, a far cry from who we saw in volume one. Seeing him come to terms with the life he lived, and acknowledging he did nothing but wrong except for being a good big brother to Toma was devastating to read. And for as much of a villain as he was in the previous volumes, Asaemon Shigen being able to switch his Tao throughout his fight with Rein was crazy to witness. We finally learn of the grand plan of Rein, in which bringing the plants to the mainland of Woguo and making Tan of all humans there to revive the Grand Master, and that Rein has died, too, and an illusory Rein has been crafted. And the reveal of only having 3 survivors making it off the island based off the I Ching ritual, with 2 men and 1 woman surviving, I can only guess as to who it will be. Mei’s transformation at the end was insane, and was so unexpected to see, and her helping everyone get to the ship to escape was another chapter that left me distraught after finishing. And the fight between Tamiya and Shugen was just perfect, so much emotion behind both sides clashing. I am ecstatic going into the final volume, and I have no idea what’s to come next.
