What a wonderful book. Not as I expected. It was not a heavy read but brief and to the point. There is no blame, no guilt attached to the reader instead the author Heather allows you to acknowledge your strengths referring to the ability of messers as having laser focus. Heather tells us to put on our clear vision shield and reassess those areas we walk by that need our attention. The author refers to the use of freely available work sheets in her website. The reader is inspired to use technology such as scanning letters that we usually stack up for attention later. The author has cleverly highlighted her deep understanding of the busy parent and how a neater home can be easily achievable with ten steps. I shall recommend this book to friends that may appreciate it as I do.
Heather E. Carson’s NEAT offers a refreshingly simple yet powerful approach to decluttering your home—and your life. The book breaks down the process into 10 actionable steps that are less about perfection and more about progress. Carson emphasizes that clutter isn't just physical—it's emotional, mental, and energetic—and getting rid of it can lead to profound life changes.
Her method encourages readers to ditch overwhelm by starting small, using categories like “The Power of One Thing” and “Tidy Ten” to stay consistent without burnout. Carson’s tone is warm, motivating, and practical, making decluttering feel achievable for anyone, even those who’ve struggled for years.
Verdict: A quick, motivating read that’s ideal for anyone looking for structure, encouragement, and results in their decluttering journey.
This book is well organized and useful. I've read a lot on removing clutter and ways to get motivated and have a cleaner home with more time and space so you can have time to do the things you love or that are most important to you. After reading this book I am encouraged that I'm doing a few things right! Now I have a clearer vision to build on my meager success so far. This has been very helpful to see my way clearer and make better progress. The book is easy to read and very encouraging. Habit stacking is one of the tactics mentioned that is new to me. I actually had just successfully done it with a task I need to do daily before I read the book. Now that I'm aware of it and understand it better, I'll use it more often. Thank you to the author!
Do not let the book size fool you, it is packaged full of information.
What I like about this book, it is condensed down for a quick read with a lot of information inside. You can download free templates without having to provide an email address at the author's website. The book and templates make it a complete package so you can start right away. This book would make a great educational tool to teach children how to be neat. The scan the room tip, is something I have incorporated into my tidy up routine. The book is positive and the author explains things really well.
This was amazing. Who'd have thought that a book about cleaning and tidying would make you look at your childhood and how it's affecting you as a child? The signal-to-noise ratio is incredible here. I found almost every word helpful. That's both in terms of content and formulation. The author is a great writer. In the end, this short book has a spot on summary of the main ideas. The only question is why is this so short? I wish longer books were structured as well as this.
Positive ideas and good process the stacking of habits is a great start. Also found the double time for kitchen work efforts was spot on to allow for time to clean up and put away, very helpful reinforcement.
The Simplicity side of the process is not as simple as it is made out to be. Yes building the habits is good but some day and some moods just do not work well, sometime the mess maker comes out and you deal with it the next day.
Very conversational and lighthearted so pressure free! No guilt tripping over here!
Broken down into literally very simple steps that are very easy to implement, meaning I’ve actually been able to stick to them for weeks. If you’ve tried so many different tricks, hacks, routines & habits for keeping tidy and finding the motivation and not much has worked or stuck, try this book!
A quick read so perfect for in between your usual material.
This book is very appealing as it helps us see the psychology of why it’s hard to be neat, but that most people can actually work their way through it & become NEAT with a bit of persistent effort. Many good practical hints are included on how to become and stay NEAT. Nice Approach.
Learning to be neat can be difficult. Even if you don't consider yourself a messy person, there are some strategies in this book that can show you areas where one likely needs to improve that will certainly carry over into other aspects of your life, such as visualizing the issue, asking for help, and letting go of perfectionism.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a clutter bug as I call myself, I needed help in understanding the simple things to incorporate into my life to help make life more manageable. This book gives tips, examples and explanations for the steps to help you get your work to a ''done'' state.
I agree with every step of this book and recommend everyone read it, weather you are Neat or not. I am already doing 90 percent of all suggestions and still enjoyed the book. I want my husband to read it so he can understand why it is that I do what I do . maybe, hopefully some day, he can be Neat too!
A quick read. Heather Carson boils housekeeping down to the basics. Quick and to the point, it was easy to make notes that are easy to follow without getting stuck in minutia.
Keep this thing in this specific room/space, even though I have no idea how your house or family function!😃 This was just ok, nothing groundbreaking or special. I did like that it was a quick read and there were no long tangents.
I found this book helpful. It gave me ideas of where to put my mess. It was very easy to follow and easy to read the Ideas that were given in each chapter. I really enjoyed reading this !
The Introduction told me this book would be different than the other decluttering books I've read. The comparison between neat and mess maker hit home for me. Definitely recommend.
I personally just wanted to review what I’ve learned from previous teachers on the subject, refreshing my knowledge and looking into a different perspective. I got everything I wanted out of reading this book
An extremely basic guide to cleaning and staying near with a couple of interesting ideas. Really nothing that you wouldn't find online though or on a BuzzFeed list.
Full of practical advice and actionable steps. I am glad I came across it and now have a plan on how to proceed with reducing stress because of the mess, and changing my life as such
I've read similar books with similar steps of success, but I really like that Heather compares them to super heroes and makes it sound so much more fun. Especially to a mom of little boys.
A nice little book, gentle reminders on keeping it clean. :) Just two minutes of tidying and wiping (ha!) can make a big difference in keeping surfaces from becoming unsightly.
